Dark black color. Medium head. Aroma is malty and choclately. Medium bodied porter. Malts are roasty with chocolate and dark fruits. Hops are slightly spicy. Touches of wood and smoke. A trace of bourbon flavor, it kind of subtle. Nice balanced. Very smooth. No alcohol bite. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Sampled at the 7th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival held at the Carlsbad Pizza Port. This porter was aged in bourbon barrels, hence the name. This beer had a deep, dark chocolate brown color and a modest bubbly beige head. Light amounts of lace left ghostly tracks inside the glass.
The smell was of coffee, burnt grains, some chocolate and a whiff of bourbon. The taste was sweet up front, with a light chocolatey flavor and an earthy maltiness. Then a smooth, sweetly alcoholic bourbon flavor that leached from the barrels played over the palate. Lastly, a dark coffee bean taste lent a bitterness to the finish. The feel was on the medium side of full, smooth and round.
This may well have been my favorite beer of all those sampled at the festival. The addition of the bourbon flavor really enhanced this beer and made it dangerously easy to drink. Most offerings from Rock Bottom that I've tried have fallen into the "decent but not great" category. Bourbon Barrel Porter was a serious step up.
