Reddish amber color, spotty lacing, thin veil across the surface. Bright clarity and color.

Soft apple butter aroma, mellow with a light natural fruit tartness.

Tart cranberry, clean natural fruity flavor, mellow maltiness. Apple butter on multigrain bread. Not acidic, mellow in terms of funky/wild characteristic. Light and easy drinking, entry level but full of tart cranberry flavors. Thumbs up.

"American wild amber ale" on tap at Clybourn. Served in a tulip.

A: Burgundy body with a nice red-tinged white head.

S: Strawberry and cranberry notes in the aroma, along with some mild caramel maltiness. Sweet and lightly vinegary

T: Prominent acetic and lactic notes form a mild strawberry-like tartness. Caramel, strawberry and tart cranberries, light roasted grain, sweet fig. Tart but not dry. Lots of residual sugar here.

M: Light-bodied, moderate carbonation.

O: I generally like "wild" amber ales, but this one was a bit too sweet and acetic. Could be cleaned up a bit.

From 01/21/13 notes. had on tap at the Clybourn brewpub; was excited to see a wild ale on tap I've never heard of.

a - Pours a hazy deep reddish garnet color with one inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident. Pretty looking beer, like the color a lot.

s - Smells of lightly sour cranberries, sweet dark fruits, apple cider, fruity malts, some light oak. Sweet and sour, but mostly sweet, cranberries...a little like hard cranberry juice.

t - Tastes of sweet cranberry juice, sweet dark fruits, apple cider, fruity malts, lightly soured dark fruits, oak, earthy notes. Again, like sweet cranberry juice. Less sourness than the nose.

m - Light body and moderate carbonation. Easy drinking beer, could definitely have a few of them.

o - Overall a really nice beer, though not too sour or wild ale...reminds me more of a fruit beer. Basically like a hard cranberry juice, it is tasty and easy to drink, and something I'd have again.

Served in a tulip glass at the Clybourn brewpub.

My "hold me closer" joke fell flat at the bar, but, then again, it wasn't all that funny. Anyway, this stuff pours a clear sunrise amber-garnet topped by a finger of dusty ecru foam. The nose comprises lightly-tart cranberry dipped in maple syrup, with a glass of apple cider on the side. The taste brings in more of the same, though now the cider seems as though it was made with green apples (I dunno, they can do that, right?), the spices inherent therein are now slightly muddled, and there is a hint of rubber created in the background throughout. Somehow that last bit doesn't altogether ruin things. Fair enough. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a decidedly interesting beer, one that teeters on awesome sour, but sadly one that never fully realizes that promise. Still, it ain't all that bad, and it's definitely an exciting bit for the taste buds.

A: amber chestnut colored beer with a moderate sized off cream colored head, moderate retention and poor lacing.

S: cranberry and cherry aromas, touch of apple cider and light notes of acetic character, big nutty toasted malt character.

T: sour cherry, apple cider, hint of vinegar and the same big toasted malt character from the aroma.

M: medium light bodied, a moderate amount of carbonation, finishes dry with a moderate amount of drinkability.

Overall a unique beer, like an accidentally soured amber ale. Combination of sour cherry and cranberries, vinegar, toasted nutty malt and a lingering off flavor I can't place.

"American Wild Amber Ale." Served on-draught at Goose Island Clybourn in Chicago over St. Patrick's day weekend. Reviewed from notes. 4.80% ABV confirmed. Served into a 12 oz tulip.

A: Pours a half finger head of khaki colour. Lovely cream. Solid thickness. Good (~3+ minute) retention. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Body colour is a dark red. Nontransparent. Semitranslucent.

Sm: Cherry, fruitskin, amber malts, cranberries, cranberry skin, crisp apple, and crystal malts. An evocative aroma of average strength. Lightly tart.

T: Clean tart cranberry. Great execution of the fruit, with just a touch of light sourness. Good clean maltiness beneath the surface notes. No yeast character or alcohol comes through. Damn that cranberry is good. A bit too sugary, though. Balance is very good, but it's not horribly complex or subtle. Really pleasant and enjoyable overall. I'm digging this beer.

Mf: Smooth, wet, and perfectly carbonated. Good thickness. Clean. Complements the flavour profile well. Well executed.

Dr: Drinkable. I quite like it. A damn well executed cranberry beer. Don't expect a huge sour profile. It's just a sold tart amber ale.
