Bottle thanks to Dave Tohtz. Served in a Russian River tulip.
A - Pretty much still. Turbid, murky, raisin brown body, with no foam, lace, etc. Looks a lot like Père Winkle or Sour Père Jacques did.
S - Wine and oak dominate, with a hint of acetone in the periphery. As the beer warms, some of the base beer's Belgian candi sugar and dark fruity flavors come through, as well as a vaguely savory note. Some oxidation as well.
T - The taste is again dominated by vinous flavors, with perhaps a touch of overt alcohol. Pear is understated, but presents more than it does in the aroma (which was not at all), making a brief cameo in the finish. Perhaps the beginnings of some lacto in here? Base beer is somewhere in there but gets its lunch money taken by the barrel-aging.
M - Smooth texture but thin in body. No carbonation as expected, and a dry and tannin-heavy finish. A bit of warming alcohol, but nothing untoward.
D - A very strange beer. It's not entirely unpleasant, and there's certainly a lot going on, but I would struggle greatly in drinking more than a few ounces of this. I wonder how long this was in barrels?
