thanks to smurfbeer for sharing!

poured into a snifter

appearance: jet black, doesnt pour as syrupy as the other variants tho, thin wine-red head with some carb bubbles.

aroma: big cherry nose, soft chocolatey bourbon notes highlighted by some cocoa scents

palate: wow, 13.7% is hidden so well, this beer is so smooth probably only rare is smoother, drinks so easily, man this is a dangerous beer!

taste: fantastic black cherry flavors are a hit, tastes like im eating real door county cherries. a perfect blend of natural cherry flavor with bourbon, cocoa, vanilla highlights.

overall: i loved this, my second favorite variant behind vanilla and ahead of rare. its so unique, and it perfects the cherry stout combo that so many others couldnt master. tihs was a real treat, thankful i got to try it finally!

Bottled 11/12/12

Beer is jet black with a small tan head. Head is gone quickly, minimal lacing.

Nose contains bourbon, rye, roast malt, chocolate. Vanilla, oak. I don't get the cherry in the nose, but it is a very nice, heavy scent. A notable sweetness.

Taste is great. Roast malt, oak, bourbon, vanilla. cherry and rye. The cherry is clearly present yet restrained: this is not a fruity beer. Cherry contains a very slight tartness. Beer is quite sweet, much more so than the regular version. Between the barrel and the cherry, the base beer gets a little covered, but the taste is excellent.

Full bodied, moderate to low carbonation, very slick and smooth. SIlky.

Overall, really good. The sweetness is close to too much, but I have a bit of a sweet tooth. Nice beer for sure! Really glad I got the chance to try it, but I would search high and low for another bottle.

22oz, Bottled 11/12/13
5oz mini snifter

A: Pours dark brown black. Collar of dark tan. Bits of tan lacing. Looks similar to other versions of BCBS to me. Syrup like darkness. Leaves a film on the glass of alcohol feet. Lower carbonation.

S: Like all BCBS, really pleasant nose here. Chocolate fudge. Dark fruit. Tart Cherries. Vanilla.

T: Tart cherry blast right up front. Then you are hit with a really fudge like dark chocolate flavor. The bourbon heat is hidden more in this due to that overwhelming sweetness. You get some alcohol burn down the back of the throat and more as it warms. It's a touch messy, but I like sweet beers to it's right up my alley.

M: Full bodied. Mouth coating.

Appearance: Thick and enticing, black as a night deep in the woods of Galicia under a starry night. Shiny and oily, with a solid two-finger head that lasts long enough but leaves no lacing.

Smell: Quite intoxicating, with sweetness galore, subtle cherry, sour tones, fig, wood and prune puree. Some spice from the rye-whiskey barrel but not as much as I expected. More like a cherry bomb shot made of flavored vodka, Red Bull and syrup. In a good way, though! Chocolate and brown sugar. High-quality balsamic vinegar. Good barrel aroma.

Taste: Excessively sweet, so the spicy rye at the end of the sip is welcome. Chocolate, tad of coffee. cocoa-splashed coffee beans. All good but maybe too outrageous. Definitely a sipper. Not a whole lot of whiskey or barrel.

Mouthfeel: Thick, dense, syrupy, intense. Low carbonation, full flavor, big body. Tangy-ass finish. Spicy and different. Dry, need water.

Overall: Drinkable as far as Bourbon County variations is concerned, but of course still a heavy, massive brew. Not my favorite of the Bourbon bunch, but still enjoyed it a great deal and would repeat.

This beer poured out as a typical black color with a light brown head. The retention is minimal. There is a slight lacing. The smell is medicinal, it smell like artificial cherry. It's hit or miss honestly. The taste is also medicinal, cough syrupy cherry flavors with a subtle rye flavor in there. The stout is good but the additional flavors are a bit off. The mouthfeel of the beer is smooth, silky and drinkable. Overall this beer is decent, but not as good as its counter parts. It might be worth trying but it's based on personal preference.

Typical Bourbon County Stout appearance. Rich, thick, black. Small tan head that fades rapidly. The aroma does indeed bring the beautiful scent of cherries, followed by the rich, roasted malt and chocolate of the regular version. The cherry really pops in the flavor. Simply fabulous. Not too sweet or syrupy. I could drink a bottle by myself. Not cloying in the least. Smooth on the palate with low carbonation. Gentle warming finish. Outstanding!

Pours black, very low amount of head to it, 1/16" of tan head, not much to go on as far as saying retention/lacing here, just not much to deal with.

Aroma was heavy on the booze, sweet rye, and cherries. A little more under the radar than I was expecting, this is far from the amount of cherry say, in a Bell's cherry stout.

Flavor is plenty sweet, helping to overcome the boozy aspect of these bourbon county labels, they've pretty much all been very boozy every time, every batch. Oak isn't as noticebale, but the sweetness of this one is up there, similar to the vanilla or bramble, but a very different way. The cherry offers up a mild tartness that counterbalances everything else well.

If you can't hang with big beers, you will want to avoid this. Cherry + booze makes the timid think cold medicine.

Carbonation was just right, low and smooth. Paired the second half of my drinking with a backwoods wild n mild cigar. Went together pretty well. Unfortunately, the experienced was compromised by one David Hurley of the El Dorado, after his bosses approved our bottle share, this guy came and said we were hurting his BMC sales by having too much of a good time with this. Their loss in the long run, but it didn't hurt the good times enjoyed while drinking this Goose Island beer (and the irony of hearing that one BMC owned product isn't allowed because it hurts sales of the best selling BMC owned product was kind of cool, in a sad way).

A: Deepest brown, seems a few shades lighter than regular BCBS. Very low carb as usual.

S: BCBS fudge, a lot of booze, cherries are in the background. Less 'sweet' whiskey vibe than regular BCBS, seems woodier.

T: Cherries are more present but still subtler than I'd like. Very boozy, it feels young.

M: Thick and luscious, classic BCBS here.

An awesome beer but probably my least favorite variant.

22oz bottle thanks to HopsHopenstein. Typical stout appearance and a very short head that eventually goes bye bye. Aroma is strong (rye?) whiskey with only the mildest hint of cherry and no hint of stout at all. The flavor was quite good, very robust cherry and chocolate followed by booze. This tasted like a chocolate covered cherry with a booze filled center. A little astringent on the end but for such a huge beer the alcohol was not a big problem. Nice beer but a seven ounce serving was more than enough for me. They really need to put these variants into 12oz bottles.

Had this at a tap takeover at Blues-bar in Mount Prospect. Served in a 12 oz snifter.

Color is dark as night, what else would you really expect! It pours with a very minimal head but it is there with some hazy brown bubbles.

The smell gives me very high hopes. I do not get a powerful booze smell but instead something resembling maraschino cherry juice.

The taste is out of this world. Perfectly balanced between the cherry, boozy bourbon flavor and chocolate.

Mouth-feel is equally as good, definitely a chewy beer.

Overall this is my favorite of he bourbon counties with a close second being the coffee. IF you like stouts and you have the opportunity GET THIS BEER and you will no be disappointed.

A very generous Christmas present from my cousin. I poured from a bomber into a snifter, jet black pou, ver thin tan head. Lots of. Ooze on the nose, hints of vanilla, chocolate and cherries. Taste like it smells, with the cherries becoming more prominant. ery rich and complex like the rest of the bcbs variants. I am I. The minority and actually liked bramble better. Cheery rye is really tasty and it deserves the hype it receives.

A - Classic bourbon county stout: espresso black with dark brown highlights. Creamy foam quickly settles into a thick halo and then hangs around with decent retention. Poor lace.

S - Thick molasses, vanilla, touch of booze, oatmeal raisin cookies, just a hint of balsamic, brown sugar, Dr Pepper soda. Surprisingly little cherry.

T - Massive chocolate covered cherry flavor. Bold sour cherries. Semi-sweet dark chocolate. Molasses, dark rye bread, medium roast cafe latte, super smooth booze, dark roasty malt. Incredible balance.

M - Unbelievable combination of smoothness, fullness, and well balanced carbonation.

O - An outstanding beer. One of the best stouts I've had, let alone flavored stout. The cheery flavor is not overly sweet, perfectly balanced with the rest of the profile, and natural (i.e. doesn't tastes like the cough syrup that plagues most cherry flavored beers); fantastic.

Served on-tap at Local Option for Pi Day in a snifter:

A- very dark to near black with a very thin reddish mocha colored head that quickly dissapeared leaving a thin edge around the sides of the glass. Lacing was more in the form of legs, no stickiness at all.

S- The aroma is nice, a touch sweet with the cherry notes, there is a boozy bourbon chocolate presence and just a hint of Vanilla.

T- bourbon, cherry and booze-Awesome. slight aftertaste of chocolate and maybe some oakiness...

M- Silky smooth, no carbonation to speak of with no lingering aftertaste.

O- I finally understand the hype. This is a great beer, have a bottle to enjoy in the future and it will be interesting to see how it compares to tap. This is the first of the Variants that I have tried and it is a nice variant on the original. Am a sucker for Cherries and Raspberries so this is right in my wheelhouse. I think I still enjoy BCBS more but may revise after a side by side bottle tasting.

Thanks a lot Josh!

Pours viscous and pitch black with mahogany edges and a half finger beige head that quickly fades, settling into a thin ring.  Spotty lacing left behind.

Sweet boozy aroma with a nicely integrated barrel presence that's countered by dark fruit and sweet and roasted malt notes.  Subtle dry oak along with a strong boozy bourbon character.  Barrel presence is strong but doesn't overpower the malt backbone that has notes of silky, fudge-y chocolate cake and subtle roast along with sweet cherry juice and dark berries.  Smells very good.

Full bodied and viscous with a prominent barrel presence that's pretty much perfectly integrated into the base beer and the addition of cherries puts it on another level.  Strong whiskey/bourbon flavor with plenty of sweet alcohol that's countered by luscious, silky chocolate malt, fudge/cake sweetness and subtle roast.  Some dry, toasted oak, vanilla bean and coconut but the bourbon and cherries really stand out.  Dessert like with sweetness and pastry like flavors under the barrel.  Also, the addition of cherries is wonderful adding a vinous sweetness that compliments the other flavors without being cloyingly sweet or syrupy.  Slightly dry/tart dark fruit presence is most prominent in the finish providing a lingering complex flavor that is really delicious.  I usually really dislike cherry stouts or fruit forward dark beers but it works really well here.

I have no idea why I was fiending for this but I moved forward and grabbed it

A- cherry rye pours a cola jet black body with strong mocha head of foam. Ruby hues on the edges and darkness engulfs the glass. Slightly tan foam lingers on the edges of the glass

S- major oak bourbon, chocolate fudge, burnt sugar, and some tart cherries. Definite darkened fruit, marshmallow, and strong sweet malt is present. Very dark and strong elements all meshing together

T- sweet chocolate, vanilla, oak, and deliciously sweet cherries are in full effect. I mean this is some serious stuff! The specifics on the stout are delicious to begin with... Flavorful bourbon compacts in with the stout making a delicious flavor profile... But then it hits... The incredibly presenly tart Michigan cherries. These are not only real and they are fantastic! This is the biggest fruit presence I have ever tasted in a stout and that makes it perfect!

M- coated creamy layers of flavor coate the mouth.

O- so I've been told by a few people this is the best stout they have ever had and now i see why. This barrel aged brew is that good. So complex but so detailed in delivering what is said. Do what you can to get a cherry rye

Poured on tap at the Local Option in Chicago, served in a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

The beer pours a deep, jet black color barely any touches of cola brown when struck by the light, a thin, bubbly caramel colored head arises, no real retention and no lacing. The aroma is very pleasant, but very sweet and a bit distracting. Lots of chocolate cake, oaky bourbon, light char and sweet cherry glaze with some sweet vanilla hidden in there. The flavors are right in line with the nose, chocolate brownie with some earthier wood and oak, subtle bourbon, nicely integrated with just a kick of tart, tangy cherry that lingers with the alcohol on the finish. Some vanilla and brown sugar are noticeable as well which really highlights how sweet of a beer this is. The body is nice and rich, luscious at times that coats the mouth very well, and has the silkiest of smooth finishes.

Verdict: A very enjoyable take on the Bourbon County line. I found the cherry to be a really nice subtle touch, but the overall sweet nature of this beer was a bit overpowering at times. It's definitely better fresh than Bramble was but there is a noticeable lack of Rye influence that I wish was there to help counter the sweetness. Still an enjoyable beer worth seeking out.

Review from notes. Thanks Paul!

A: Pours black with small bubbles forming at the top, but no real head or lacing to write of.

S: Bourbon upfront, some caramel and brown sugar followed by rich chocolate and cherries. Pretty rich and sweet, but very inviting.

T: The cherries are evident right away, slightly tart and still fresh. Underneath is the BCBS that I was expecting, nice chocolate, coffee, roast flavors mixed with some bourbon. The rye adds just a touch of spice, but the cherries really dominate here.

M: Full bodied with low carbonation, very smooth.

O: Very impressed, lives up its reputation. Another well done BCBS variant.

22 oz bottle, opened this at the Peg's tasting on 3/8/13.

A- Pours black, thin tan head, leaves little lacing.

S- Very rich, complex aroma. Has loads of the usual Bourbon County chocolate fudge, bourbon and vanilla flavors, also nice notes of coconut and oak. The cherry is mild and is at just the right level. Also some coffee and roasted grain.

T- Similar to the aroma, lots of chocolate fudge, coffee, bourbon, vanilla and oak. Cherry and a more complex fruity flavor. The barrel flavors and fruitiness are rich and complex and not overly sweet in the least. Really spot-on.

M- Full-bodied, chewy, thick feel, moderate alcohol warmth.

O- I was surprised by how good this was, I wasn't a fan of Bramble at all but the fruity and chocolate/roasty/BCBS flavors worked really nicely together and made a rich, complex dessert kind of beer. This is probably tied with Coffee for my favorite variant so far.

A- dark brown/black with a red hue. Thin brown head that dissipates quickly.

S- sweet bourbon with a hint of cherry

T- sweet cherry laced with bourbon and chocolate. Then the rye spiciness hits your palate and sticky cherry candy just sticks to the roof of your mouth.

M- low carbonation that feels like a liqueur

O- exactly what I hoped for. An epic blend of cherry and rye whiskey. This type of beer could have been a horrible experiment gone wrong but instead GI just killed it.

Phenomenal. I actually enjoy this more than the BC coffee. I purchased my bottle a couple months ago but the bottled on date is marked as 11/12/12. Smells like tart cherry. Subtle cherry taste (which please me, I'm not a fan of overwhelming cherry taste). The cherry flavor hangs out on your tongue for minutes after each sip. Pours a dark brown with little to no head.

Bottled on 11/12/12.

A: Pitch black pour. Big, dense, very dark brown head. Almost as black as the body momentarily. Head fades fairly quickly, with nary a spot of lacing to be found. Quite decent retention, however - the head is stirred back up easily with a little swirl.

S: Whoa. Strong rye whiskey with a mild cherry punch. As it typical with the BCBS series you can barely even smell the beer, it is almost all whiskey. Get just a little roasted malt character trying to peek through. Rye whiskey aroma is quite spicy (should be obvious but it's spicier than I expected).

T: Once again, rye whiskey up front but not overpowering. Heavy roasted malt character mixes in with chocolate and some char and a little cherry. There is a sudden and strong punch of fresh sweet cherries in the middle. As the cherries fade slowly away the spiciness of the rye really stands out as the slightly bitterer roasted malt continues its tirade. Quite sharp in general, high ABV is hard to hide - almost pure whiskey in the finish and the aftertaste. There is a nice cherry flavor lingering between sips too which is nice.

M: Heavy, thick, viscous.

O: Well done beer. A very nice and unique take on the BCBS series. On paper it's somewhat similar to the bramble rye but in reality it's not even close. The cherries in this are fresh, sweet and tasty. The berry flavor in the bramble rye came out more artificial and medicinal - like cough syrup. Great beer, and I'm not even a huge fan of cherries - but I am a huge fan of rye whiskey. So I guess it balances out. If I had to mention any flaws, I would say that the cherry flavor is almost a little too sweet in this one - borderline cloying.

A huge thanks to Mike (GrumpyoldTroll), who sent me this one and refused to give me his address so I could reciprocate. I'll get you back buddy! 22oz. bomber into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a massive, motor oil pitch black. .25 finger dark mocha head that collapses quickly. Lacing is non-existent but the legs are super thick and and sticky. Decent.

Nose is surprisingly mellow. Notes of alcohol, chocolate, fudge, vanilla, and honey. Appetizing.

Opens sweet with a slightly plastic-y cherry. Alcohol seeps in quickly, bringing with it notes of chocolate, fudge, molasses, dark fruit and leather. Some more cherry notes in the middle sweetens this one a bit further. End is fudge, dark fruit and booze. Finishes hot and boozy with a linger, sweet, syrupy, chocolate aftertaste. I didn't know if this would work in the beginning but it grew and grew on me.

Full bodied with moderate to low carbonation. Smooth and rich in the mouth and goes down warm and boozy. Finishes messy with a long, lingering aftertaste. Spot on for the style. A real sipper.

Certainly not the best of the variants (easily the Coffee for me) but this is an interesting twist on the base beer. The cherry addition is subtle but definitely detectable and actually works decently with the bourbon imperial stout flavors present here. A bit sweeter than even the base beer so I could see how some might not like this diabetus-in-a-bottle. However, if you get your hands on it, its worth a try.

Opaque black body with a good 1/2" of tight dark tan head. Red pops from the edges when presented to a light.

Oh yeah, I can tell by the smell this is going to kill it. It smelled like a cherry tootsie pop paired with a glass of quality spicy rye. Chocolate, cherries, and whiskey can never be wrong.

It all melds perfectly in the flavor. The cherries are dark, paired with fudge, vanilla, toffee, and finished with the perfect amount of heat from the booze. Well done. Because of the heat and cherries it has a slight medicinal feel but it just seems right.

Mouthfeel is viscous, smooth, and chased with a slight burn in the finish. Low carbonation is spot on.

It's definitely one of the better beers I've had in my lifetime and is probably my favorite BCBS variant to date. It lives up to the hype in every way imaginable.

Not sure entirely how this worked out in my favor, but boy was I happy today when I popped into my regular shop and picked up a bottle of Cherry Rye off the cuff tonight speaking with the gang that works at the store. Score one for the home team! Not only is this way past the time that I thought I might be able to find this in a shop but I was offered it from behind the shelf which was great.

A: Pours oil thickness, just as expected from a Bourbon County variety. tiny lacing of bubbles around the edges.

S: Aroma of sweet caramelized sugar and bourbon along with additional cherry sweetness which got me more excited that i had this and was able to be picking it up in my scent glands.

T: Thick robust Bourbon county stout! no surprise there, this is exactly how I envisioned it and additionally very solidly rounded than I expected. The bourbon notes are muted a little bit when compared to the non Rye barrels that I have had before and there is additional Rye flavor spicing going on in the background. I can really enjoy this knowing that the rye is different from the other BCBS that I have had. Cherry flavors are slightly up a notch from what I expected. Deep black cherry flavors that are sweet and mix well with the rye barrels. Extremely enjoyable for me with my sweettooth. Next up will be the coffee variety.

M: Thick with minimal carbonation. Delicious

O: Overall I am impressed. I think this went beyond my expectations after hearing other say that they were slightly let down. This was definitely not the case with me. I would purchase more of these if I had the opportunity.
