Pours black, maybe two fingers of head with a fairly aggressive pour. Recedes to leave very little lacing.

This doesn't have the lush berry scent of Bramble, instead there's a muted scent of original BCBS with a slight tartness.

Taste is dark chocolate interwoven with tart cherries. Bourbon notes compliment well. Finish with big ripe tart cherries. It is really a very sweet beer on all fronts, sweet chocolate malts, sweet cherries and bourbon boozy sweetness.

Not as full as BCBS. Finishes a bit sticky sweet, moderate to low carbonation.

No doubt this is a great beer. Glad to have the chance to try it. The highlight of this beer is the wave of cherry flavor over the palate on the finish.

Poured from a bomber into a Goblet. This was bottled on 11/12/12 so is about 6 months "old" as of this date.

Appearance: Pours a jet-black and leaves a half finger of dark brown/tan head which fades quickly to just a brown rim around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Delicious bourbon, chocolate, figs, light coffee, cherry - awesome smelling BA stout right here. The smells are quite pronounced and are very pleasant.

Taste: Bourbon, chocolate covered cherries, plums, figs, raisins. The cherry comes out very nicely and really adds to this beer. Exceptionally balanced and also quite sweet (in a good way). Tremendous.

Mouth-feel: Lightly carbonated and full bodied - this body is perfectly in line with the flavors that are presented in this beer. The alcohol is expertly hidden and this is very smooth, especially considering the amount of flavor.

Overall: I was hugely impressed with this beer. The cherries really balance this one out and add to the complexity of the flavors. I could drink a lot of this, considering how smooth and delicious it is, but that would be dangerous because of all the hidden alcohol! This beer has all the best characteristics of a barrel-aged stout and none of the worst. Highly recommended.

Poured from a bomber into a half-pint chalice.

A: Opaque black color with a vanishing sheet of beige bubbles. No lacing remains on the glass.

S: A gentle combination of ale yeast and chocolate opposes assertive and dark cherry liqueur. Despite the spirituous effect, pure alcohol is restrained.

T: Begins sweet, with intense cherry flavor early that appears a bit artificial. The arrival of wood has a moderating influence on the fruit, lending authenticity. Flavors become chocolatey--pudding-like--in the middle. Late acidity is potent in the finish that holds little bitterness. No alcohol is detected.

M: Thick viscosity, very acidic on the palate at times, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: Despite the fruit addition, this beer should not disappoint any who appreciate the anticipated powerful sensory qualities of Goose Island's classic Bourbon County Brand Stout. It achieves redemption of a sort, after the terrible Bramble Rye variant of 2011, with cherry qualities that aren't so much reined in as they are simply more appropriate to the application. It shows some milk stout qualities as well, coming across as soft and chocolatey when acidity was not raging across the palate.

A- Pitch black syrupy body with a thin tan head that fades away quickly.

S- Sweet caramel, vanilla, cherries, sweet bread, grainy rye bread.

T- Sweet vanilla and caramel up front, lots of bourbon similar to the standard BCBS. The middle is where the cherries show up. Tastes like black cherries rolled in sugar, which adds a whole new element to the beer. The finish is very sweet, but tons of malts come through along with some earthy rye.

M- Just enough carbonation, very thick and a definite sipper.

O- Very impressive offering. The cherry is more subtle than I thought it would be, but adds a great element to this beer.

S-Bottle pour from Craft Ale House-PA
A-very dark, good lacing and small tan head remained thru whole glass
S-some sweet fruit on nose, not too sweet, mixed with regular stout backbone
T-Wow. I actually sad WOW outloud (rare). Was not sure I'd like it as almost all "fruit" added beers are not for me. Even cold this was very good and complex with several layers. A later taste when warmed up gave slight sweetness of bourbon (oak, vanilla) and a semi sweet fresh real cherry taste. Very creamy as it swirls around and gives off taste explosions one by one. The finish that lingers is like a very good country cherry pie. The tartness and semi-sweetness is there. Closing my eyes I could almost taste the pie shell flavor mixed with the slight tartness of the cherries. Very complex.
M-very smooth, creamy, so much going on!
O-Ok, I have found a beer with a fruit added that has made me a fan. Very rare already, but this is a special occassion type beer and you need to have it for...with...or AS dessert. Paired with some dark chocolate this would be a long and enjoyable sipper. Kudos to Goose and I hope they bring it back in a year or so as a special brew! I've never given a 5 but this is a rare beer that approaches that perfect 5 level.

Had on tap and from a bomber.

On tap a few months ago:

A: Dark. Really dark. Legs along the side, slight head that dissipated quite quickly.

S: BCS with very prominent cherries. I love cherries. I love BCS. Thank you GI

T: Tart. Not overly tart. Perfect blend of flavors, and the sweetness I wanted from the cherries!

M: Sticky, chewy, coating. Yes.

Out a bomber last night:

A: Dark, but it was also in a dimly lit restaurant.

S: More subdued cherry scent, but it's calling me to bring the glass to my lips with no hesitation.

T: WOW. Better out the bottle. The cherry has blended nicely with BCS. Balanced. That's all I have to say.

M: Sticky, chewy, coating, even better than on tap.

So far, my favorite variety of BCS, Bramble coming in second, only because I have an affinity for cherries. I hope this comes back. Please.

Goose Island Cherry Rye Bourbon County Brand Stout

Poured into a tulip glass from a 22oz bottle.

Pours a nice viscous dark oily liquid with a thin ring of light tan foam that forms even with a vigorous pour. A nice swirl gets a nice quarter inch head going that stays for a little bit. (5.0)

Aroma is delicious. Amazing. Very nice bourbon notes. This is perfection in the nose. Starts off with some nice molasses and caramel sweetness mixed in with some slight vanilla. Underlain cherry sweetness is present in the nose. The whiskey is mixed in with this very well and is slightly spicier; probably because of the rye. As it warms the cherry really opens up. Smells like cherry pie with some caramel and bourbon drizzled upon it. Amazing. There is some nice tartness form the cherry as wells that in the nose makes the beer not be as sweet as some other bourbon stouts. The rye notes are so nice because they have the typical sweetness of caramel and vanilla but also have a nice spice and woody note to it. (5.0)

Flavor starts off with amazing cherry pie notes. Fruit cherry sweetness starts things off with some slight tartness that comes up after the sweetness. There is some nice caramel and molasses notes that mix in with the cherry tartness and balance each other very well. Every sip seems different with the whiskey sweetness and cherry tartness battling it out for dominance. The whiskey notes also bring in some slight spice to it and more of an earthy almost woody note that is slightly perceived on the back end. Very nice heat is perceived as the brew warms mixed in with the sweetness and there is a nice slightly tart cherry finish to the brew. As this brew warms it really turns into something wonderful. Nice sweet/tart cherry pie notes with some good molasses and whiskey sweetness, slight vanilla and even some fudge notes and then some nice rye spice. The brew is chewy full and rich but its not syrupy or overwhelming. Definitely keeps you coming back for more. (4.75) (5.0)

Overall, this brew is amazing. Flavors are well crafted and then blended perfectly together. The cherry tartness and sweetness could’ve been overwhelming but it’s nice and balances the possibly syrupy sweetness out. Such a well crafted brew. Cheers GI. (5.0)

A: Gorgeous. The tap reveals a really nice, creamy, long-lasting mocha head that is unlike the fizzy one from the BCBS bottles. Pitch black - looks huge.

S: A ton of vanilla and cherry sweetness. Big, hot bourbon caramel and graham cracker bread crumbs. Pretty hot, needs some mellowing time. Too much cherry - dominates and doesn't enhance, but still smells delicious - like cherry, chocolate, bourbon desert.

T: Very, very sweet and cherry forward. Rich milk chocolate. The nuances of the bourbon seemed to me lost, buried underneath the cherry and chocolate. Some fresh roasted coffee in there somewhere.

P: Incredibly smooth, soft carbonation. Big, rich full body that gets syrupy as it warms.

O: Very interesting and good beer. Very, very sweet and cherry dominate.

I got this beer at the Zeebra Extreme Beerfestival in Holland on may 4th 2013. Zeebra was held for the first time with lots of very very very great beers like this one. As a matter of fact all the BCBS beers were there....

This one was poured in a Zeebra glass, a small tasting glass. To be honet this beer was quit normal, i expected way more quality when i look at the others in this family.

No head and no carbonation. The cherry was under influence of the bourbon taste. Pity cause this beer could have been made much better. Glad to have it though because i love the Goose Island beers...

Appearance: Typical dark black with rich browns when held to direct light. Minimal dark tan head drops to a small collar. Stays pretty still.

Smell: Slight tart cherry under the standard Bourbon County sweetness and alcohol. Vanilla and oak. Some toffee and caramel. Cherry flesh. Roasted with alcohol heat. Warming brings out some more sweetness. A hint of cough syrup in n the back. A bit more cherry flesh as it swarms .

Taste: Ummmm...Bourbon County with some tart cherry flesh. Hints of chocolate and cocoa. Slightly roasted. Coffee. Warming pulls out some more tart cherry flesh. Syrupy sweet cherry juice coupled with the typical BCBS sweetness. Vanilla bean and oak. Toasted coconutish.

Mouthfeel: Slick with a moderate carbonation. Body runs a medium to high. Relatively clean.

Overall: Oh hai guys! I put some cherries in my Burrbin County. It's delicious!

Not a particularly memorable showing in the series. A bit of a muddled cherry mess with a bit too much bourbon influence. Finishes a little different than the base beer, but not enough to be truly interesting.

Consumed 5/4/13

Cheers to Bilco for sharing this. Consumed among goblinmunkey7, Bilco, and me.

Appearance: Looks black at initial glance, but it's really more of a dark brown with some serious red and purple highlights - some clarity around the edges - pours with a small, light brown head - fades to a few small wisps, leaves a few streaks of lacing

Smell: Certainly has all the characteristics of BCBS... but it's oddly, unexpectedly sweet - burnt, caramelized notes - loads of burnt sugar - very sweet, with some obvious cherry - tart, fleshy, sweet cherries - some vanilla, dark chocolate, baker's chocolate - some roasty coffee - wood, sugar, and some sweet alcohol

Taste: Chocolate, cherries, and booze - dark chocolate, baker's chocolate, and some sweeter, chocolate syrup - syrupy, sweet cherries - some tart notes, but it's mostly just sweet, fleshy cherries - some burnt notes, roasty coffee - some boozy whiskey, wood not sure if I can detect any rye - some sweet alcohol

Mouthfeel: Full body, somewhat syrupy, low carbonation

Overall: Interesting, but could be better, in my opinion

Granted, I just drank BCBS Rare about 4 hours ago, but I don't that that skews my opinion dramatically. BCBS is kind of sweet to begin with, but it gets quite lovely with a little age. The sweetness from the cherry just pushes the sweetness over the edge. I'm also not certain that I am a big fan of the rye barrels. The whiskey flavor is a bit much. This is definitely worth a try, but I might be trading out a bottle of this.

I've had this a couple times now and have enjoyed it more each time. My initial review probably would've had this beer around a 4.35. This review is from a bottle opened up by kapkenobi this past Wednesday night. Thanks, Paul!

Poured into a 12oz Voodoo snifter at ~50 degrees.

A: Pours like Bourbon County. Pitch black with a minimal, quickly receding, khaki head. Looks like a 15% stout should look. Also, after drinking this, the bottom of the glass looked discolored because of the residual thickness of the beer holding on in the glass. Awesome.

S: Black cherry, slight, slight tartness (NOT infection in any way), mellow whiskey, and dark fruits. Smell opened up even more as it warmed and all the things above just got more pronounced.

T: I didn't love this the first time I had it. I thought the rye and cherry didn't quite mesh in right, and I thought it was hot. All those problems are gone. The most recent bottle was blended perfectly, with lots of cherry flavor up front, then mellowing out in the finish and leaving the rye barrel and base maltiness of the stout behind. Really excellent.

M: Thick. All 15% stouts should have the mouthfeel of Bourbon County. GI knows what they're doing here.

O: Really a fantastic beer, and at this exact point in time, probably my favorite variant (I'd go this, coffee, rare, vanilla, bramble). This is just drinking fantastic right now, so if you were holding onto a bottle and weren't sure when to have it, I don't think this beer is going to improve greatly over where it is right now.

Quick review from written notes, served in a small tumbler glass.

Brownish black with light coming through around the edges. Slight wispy foam on the surface, fades fast to a glassy stillness.

Slight alcohol sharpness, and mild dried cherry in the aroma.

Creamy and viscous with some whiskey heat. Nice pie cherry flavor that lingers well into the aftertaste, and lends a slight tartness that isn't especially welcome. Fudgy chocolate base flavors, rich and roasty. Good in small doses, dunno if I'd seek it out again considering the whole rigamarole, but it was nice to try.

poured into a snifter

appearance: jet black, doesnt pour as syrupy as the other variants tho, thin wine-red head with some carb bubbles.

aroma: big cherry nose, soft chocolatey bourbon notes highlighted by some cocoa scents

palate: wow, 13.7% is hidden so well, this beer is so smooth probably only rare is smoother, drinks so easily, man this is a dangerous beer!

taste: fantastic black cherry flavors are a hit, tastes like im eating real door county cherries. a perfect blend of natural cherry flavor with bourbon, cocoa, vanilla highlights.

overall: i loved this, my second favorite variant behind vanilla and ahead of rare. its so unique, and it perfects the cherry stout combo that so many others couldnt master. tihs was a real treat, thankful i got to try it finally!

Bottled 11/12/12

Beer is jet black with a small tan head. Head is gone quickly, minimal lacing.

Nose contains bourbon, rye, roast malt, chocolate. Vanilla, oak. I don't get the cherry in the nose, but it is a very nice, heavy scent. A notable sweetness.

Taste is great. Roast malt, oak, bourbon, vanilla. cherry and rye. The cherry is clearly present yet restrained: this is not a fruity beer. Cherry contains a very slight tartness. Beer is quite sweet, much more so than the regular version. Between the barrel and the cherry, the base beer gets a little covered, but the taste is excellent.

Full bodied, moderate to low carbonation, very slick and smooth. SIlky.

Overall, really good. The sweetness is close to too much, but I have a bit of a sweet tooth. Nice beer for sure! Really glad I got the chance to try it, but I would search high and low for another bottle.

22oz, Bottled 11/12/13
5oz mini snifter

A: Pours dark brown black. Collar of dark tan. Bits of tan lacing. Looks similar to other versions of BCBS to me. Syrup like darkness. Leaves a film on the glass of alcohol feet. Lower carbonation.

S: Like all BCBS, really pleasant nose here. Chocolate fudge. Dark fruit. Tart Cherries. Vanilla.

T: Tart cherry blast right up front. Then you are hit with a really fudge like dark chocolate flavor. The bourbon heat is hidden more in this due to that overwhelming sweetness. You get some alcohol burn down the back of the throat and more as it warms. It's a touch messy, but I like sweet beers to it's right up my alley.

M: Full bodied. Mouth coating.

Appearance: Thick and enticing, black as a night deep in the woods of Galicia under a starry night. Shiny and oily, with a solid two-finger head that lasts long enough but leaves no lacing.

Smell: Quite intoxicating, with sweetness galore, subtle cherry, sour tones, fig, wood and prune puree. Some spice from the rye-whiskey barrel but not as much as I expected. More like a cherry bomb shot made of flavored vodka, Red Bull and syrup. In a good way, though! Chocolate and brown sugar. High-quality balsamic vinegar. Good barrel aroma.

Taste: Excessively sweet, so the spicy rye at the end of the sip is welcome. Chocolate, tad of coffee. cocoa-splashed coffee beans. All good but maybe too outrageous. Definitely a sipper. Not a whole lot of whiskey or barrel.

Mouthfeel: Thick, dense, syrupy, intense. Low carbonation, full flavor, big body. Tangy-ass finish. Spicy and different. Dry, need water.

Overall: Drinkable as far as Bourbon County variations is concerned, but of course still a heavy, massive brew. Not my favorite of the Bourbon bunch, but still enjoyed it a great deal and would repeat.

This beer poured out as a typical black color with a light brown head. The retention is minimal. There is a slight lacing. The smell is medicinal, it smell like artificial cherry. It's hit or miss honestly. The taste is also medicinal, cough syrupy cherry flavors with a subtle rye flavor in there. The stout is good but the additional flavors are a bit off. The mouthfeel of the beer is smooth, silky and drinkable. Overall this beer is decent, but not as good as its counter parts. It might be worth trying but it's based on personal preference.

Typical Bourbon County Stout appearance. Rich, thick, black. Small tan head that fades rapidly. The aroma does indeed bring the beautiful scent of cherries, followed by the rich, roasted malt and chocolate of the regular version. The cherry really pops in the flavor. Simply fabulous. Not too sweet or syrupy. I could drink a bottle by myself. Not cloying in the least. Smooth on the palate with low carbonation. Gentle warming finish. Outstanding!

Pours black, very low amount of head to it, 1/16" of tan head, not much to go on as far as saying retention/lacing here, just not much to deal with.

Aroma was heavy on the booze, sweet rye, and cherries. A little more under the radar than I was expecting, this is far from the amount of cherry say, in a Bell's cherry stout.

Flavor is plenty sweet, helping to overcome the boozy aspect of these bourbon county labels, they've pretty much all been very boozy every time, every batch. Oak isn't as noticebale, but the sweetness of this one is up there, similar to the vanilla or bramble, but a very different way. The cherry offers up a mild tartness that counterbalances everything else well.

If you can't hang with big beers, you will want to avoid this. Cherry + booze makes the timid think cold medicine.

Carbonation was just right, low and smooth. Paired the second half of my drinking with a backwoods wild n mild cigar. Went together pretty well. Unfortunately, the experienced was compromised by one David Hurley of the El Dorado, after his bosses approved our bottle share, this guy came and said we were hurting his BMC sales by having too much of a good time with this. Their loss in the long run, but it didn't hurt the good times enjoyed while drinking this Goose Island beer (and the irony of hearing that one BMC owned product isn't allowed because it hurts sales of the best selling BMC owned product was kind of cool, in a sad way).

A: Deepest brown, seems a few shades lighter than regular BCBS. Very low carb as usual.

S: BCBS fudge, a lot of booze, cherries are in the background. Less 'sweet' whiskey vibe than regular BCBS, seems woodier.

T: Cherries are more present but still subtler than I'd like. Very boozy, it feels young.

22oz bottle thanks to HopsHopenstein. Typical stout appearance and a very short head that eventually goes bye bye. Aroma is strong (rye?) whiskey with only the mildest hint of cherry and no hint of stout at all. The flavor was quite good, very robust cherry and chocolate followed by booze. This tasted like a chocolate covered cherry with a booze filled center. A little astringent on the end but for such a huge beer the alcohol was not a big problem. Nice beer but a seven ounce serving was more than enough for me. They really need to put these variants into 12oz bottles.

Had this at a tap takeover at Blues-bar in Mount Prospect. Served in a 12 oz snifter.

Color is dark as night, what else would you really expect! It pours with a very minimal head but it is there with some hazy brown bubbles.

The smell gives me very high hopes. I do not get a powerful booze smell but instead something resembling maraschino cherry juice.

The taste is out of this world. Perfectly balanced between the cherry, boozy bourbon flavor and chocolate.

Mouth-feel is equally as good, definitely a chewy beer.

Overall this is my favorite of he bourbon counties with a close second being the coffee. IF you like stouts and you have the opportunity GET THIS BEER and you will no be disappointed.

A very generous Christmas present from my cousin. I poured from a bomber into a snifter, jet black pou, ver thin tan head. Lots of. Ooze on the nose, hints of vanilla, chocolate and cherries. Taste like it smells, with the cherries becoming more prominant. ery rich and complex like the rest of the bcbs variants. I am I. The minority and actually liked bramble better. A - Classic bourbon county stout: espresso black with dark brown highlights. Creamy foam quickly settles into a thick halo and then hangs around with decent retention. Poor lace.

S - Thick molasses, vanilla, touch of booze, oatmeal raisin cookies, just a hint of balsamic, brown sugar, Dr Pepper soda. Surprisingly little cherry.

T - Massive chocolate covered cherry flavor. Bold sour cherries. Semi-sweet dark chocolate. Molasses, dark rye bread, medium roast cafe latte, super smooth booze, dark roasty malt. Incredible balance.

M - Unbelievable combination of smoothness, fullness, and well balanced carbonation.

O - An outstanding beer. One of the best stouts I've had, let alone flavored stout. The cheery flavor is not overly sweet, perfectly balanced with the rest of the profile, and natural (i.e. doesn't tastes like the cough syrup that plagues most cherry flavored beers); fantastic.
