Old Town Yard is a beer conceived of and brewed by Goose Island brewers Gavin and John. Inspired by travels and time spent brewing in Germany the brewers decided to craft their interpretation of the classic Helles style. The resulting beer is a bright golden lager with a delicate malt sweetness, grassy Noble hop character, and a crisp refreshing body.

Had at Binny's South Loop Tap Takeover into pint glass.
A - Pours a golden yellow, clear, white head.
S - Malts, light grass, slightly herbal, some spices in there as well.
T - Sweet malts, light spice, floral/herbal notes, light hops, and some citrus in there too. Very easy-drinking, no alcohol. Finish is clean, light citrus and lemon zest.
M - Light, good carbonation, clean finish.
O - A nice Helles that's easy-drinking and enjoyable during the hot summer months. Not something I'd go to all the time, but still decent nonetheless.

On tap at Goose Island Clybourn restaurant and pub. 16oz beer stein
A: It's a fizzy yellow beer. True to the Helles style. Crystal clear. Half finger tight small bubbled head. Stays for a while.
S: Noble hops, Czech style.
T: This tastes light and airy. Great summer session brew. Their version of BMC. You get those fresh light euro hops up front. Then those smoothing malts in the center.
M: Light bodied.

14 oz. "pint" at Rockwell's.
The glass is straw gold, completely transparent and pale, with racing streams of carbonation that never let up. Thin layer of white foam settles quickly and breaks across the surface.
Aroma is faint and simple, pilsner malt and light grassiness.
Flavor is similarly unfettered and pristine, clean crackery pils malt and some faint lemongrass bitterness from the noble hops. Very crisp and dry, with a very mild sweetness in the middle that quickly fades. Light bodied and airy, very drinkable. For a Munich Helles, this is spot on and of good quality. Not sure I like paying $7 for less than a pint though, even if the ingredients were all imported.

Served in a globe at SmallBar Fullerton.
Funny how I didn't have this earlier at Goose... Anyway, it pours a clear straw topped by a finger or two of white froth. The nose comprises white, light-ish lemon zest, and a touch of coriander. The taste holds notes of wheat, coriander, light grass, and a faint hint of mild smoke (I was told after this glass that the beer was brewed with a small amount of smoked malts...it explained so much...). The body is fairly light, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a pretty tasty brew, one that reminds us that even the basic Helles can be made to be exceptional without the hand of a German brewer.

On tap @ Jake Melnick's
A: Served in a pint glass with a thin bright white head that eventually dissipates to absolutely nothing. No lacing. Beer itself is an impeccably clear yellow in color.
S: Aroma is pretty good. Light grassy hops and a mild bit of sweet malts.
T: Lightly sweet, lightly bready pale malts. Some light noble hops on the finish. Very light flavor profile.
M: Light body with appropriate carbonation. Very mild bitterness.
O: When I first tasted this, the thing that came to mind was this was GI's take on an adjunct lager. While my first impressions may not be fair, it is exactly what it tasted like to me: low ABV, low malts, low hops, exceedingly clear. I will admit, this one is incredibly drinkable and was a nice complement to Melnick's wings, but at the same time, this one is very simplistic and there just isn't much there.

Had on tap at GI Wrigleyville. Served in a stein.
A: Pours a clear golden yellow with a thin white head. It recedes to a thin collar, but doesn't leave any lacing.
S: The smell is pretty standard for the style. Solid grassy hops up front with a nice pale malt and subtle sweetness on the finish.
T: The taste is much of the same. Crisp, grassy noble hops hit you up front and transitions nicely to a pale and bready malt finish that is slightly sweet.
M: Light body, medium carbonation. Crisp and refreshing with a clean finish.
O: A very balanced and solid helles lager. Worth giving a try.

On-tap at Goose Island Clybourn. Poured into a mug.
A- Pours a bright, clear golden yellow color. Capped with a finger of fluffy white head.
S- Clean aroma of grainy pale malt and leafy, slightly floral hops.
T- Lots of slightly sweet grain, hops are grassy and floral but the bitterness is nice and subtle, definitely a malt-forward lager.
M- Light-bodied, moderate carbonation, smooth crisp feel.
O- I was pretty impressed, this would be a perfect session beer, it's light and refreshing and would be perfect once the weather here warms up. It's a classic German-style Helles, definitely took me back to the beer gardens in Munich.
