Notes:
Brewmasters Notes:
Inspired by the epic skyline of Chicago, Goose Island's brewers set out to craft Big John; a tall, bold slugger of a stout that stands out vividly against the little soft beers out there. Epic amounts of roasted malt and an addition of cacoa nibs give Big John a massive chocolate flavor and aroma. With a body as substantial and black as the building to which it pays homage, Big John is sure to inspire a sense of awe with each sip.

S: Rich, fudgy chocolate, dark, almost fruity chocolate, slightly perfumy, vanilla with some wood notes.

L: Thick, black as night. Syrupy looking. Tan head that dissipates.

T: Dark, bittersweet chocolate up front followed by rich, fudgy chocolate. Earthy bitterness with some maltiness coming through. Finishes slightly roasty, semi-dry.

M: Thick, full-bodied. Medium low carbonation. Slight alcohol warmth.

Great chocolate presence in this beer. Pretty heavy, touch to finish the entire bottle by myself.

Poured from 22oz bomber into Globe glass.

A. Pours a 1+ finger of dark tan colored head. Good retention. Moderate lacing. Color is all black.

S. Roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, molasses, some oak and vanilla. Good smelling Imperial Stout. Has a bit of alcohol smell, but not much.

T. Coffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate, oak, vanilla, molasses. Had a surprising amount of coffee bitterness for me. Pretty smooth to drink.

M. Full bodied. Medium/low carbonation. Lingering bitterness.

O. Very solid Imperial Stout. Didnt get a lot of chocolate to distinguish the cocoa nibs, but it was there. Very easy drinking for a beer this size. I could see this as a year round 4 pack from Goose Island.

22oz bottle at cellar temp poured into a snifter. bottled: 3/25/11 1832 (about 2 months old).

pours out a super dark, black as night black. absolutly no light coming through. one finger of a very dark brown colored head, one of the darkest ive seen, that unfortunatly fizzed away very quickly without leaving much of a trace, maybe a tiny ring of foam on the edges. no lace to speak of.

nice aromas of dark fruits, fig and raison like, maybe from the cocoa nibs. heavily roasted, burnt malts. some nice chocolate, but thats definatly not the main focus here. big fusil alcohols come in as it warms.

lots of burnt, heavily roasted malts, but my favorite part of the taste is the range of dark fruits that seem to meld to make some wonderful bitter, fruity dark chocolate flavors. a bit of heat towards the finish, but it seems to be a lot more subdued in the taste.

very velvety smooth with a really low carbonation which works well for the sticky mouthfeel that really coats the palate with burnt roast and fruity cocoa nibs after each sip. very full bodied.

overall: im glad i got my hands on a few of these bottles, but i think ill take a bourbon county any day over this. but, the cocoa nibs really do work some magic in this beer, and im interested to see what my other bottle will taste like in a year or 2.

Presentation: 650 ml / 1 pint 6 oz. bottle into a snifter (I obeyed the label). "BOTTLED: 03/25/11 1953" on bottom of the label. Thanks to Franz4 for nabbing one of these for me.

A- Mahogany / essentially black and opaque. Pours with just a quick fizzle of brown head, which recedes to a smattering of bubbles almost instantly.

S- Dark, roasted coffee, chocolate, and burn caramel / molasses sweetness.

T- Lots of sweet chocolate right off the bat, followed by earthy hops/roasted coffee. Feint hints of dark fruits, along with caramel sweetness. Solidly boozy kick on the finish.

M- Moderately low carbonation, with a nice full feel. Very nice.

O- Good. Tasty with a great feel...booze is pretty noticeable, but didn't really detract for me. Solid stuff.

Future outlook: Good stuff, really enjoyed. Might grab another one next year and hold onto it for even longer.

A- classic big stout look. pitch black the small mocha head quickly falls into a thin film cover.

S- licorice, bitter chocolate, chicory root and tree bark earthiness

T/M- smooth and silky. Taste is predominately licorice and anise with the same earthiness experienced in the nose with a biting port like warming from the alcohol. At first this is a touch cloying as the licorice, plum and rasin flavors pound the palette. As the beer warms it really starts to shine. The cocoa flavors come to the fore and turn smooth, robust and bittersweet and help to round out the alcohol and dark fruit/licorice- or rather, the latter flavors now round out the former. Also becomes even more uber silky, velvety, exquisitely smooth.

O- with a year on it, this beer has really come of age. This is a monster stout that is just about in its prime right now. As the beer warms up it kicks into another gear and picks up tons of complexity

Bomber poured into a tulip

A- Pours pitch black with red reflections. A one finger of a brown head. Subtle alcohol legs.

S- Smells like coffee, chocolate, a ton of roasted malts. Caramel, roasted toffee. Touch of alcohol. Enticing stuff.

T- A bit of hop bitterness and some bitterness from the chocolate as well. A lot of chocolate in this beer. There is a massive roasted malt in this beer almost to the point of making coffee flavors. There is a little alcohol in this beer but it's passable. A sweet beer that has a dry roasted aftertaste.

M- A thick and syrupy beer. It is sweet and chocolatey. A great desert beer. Warming and drinkable.

O- I really enjoyed this beer. A nice chocolate forward stout that cant disappoint.

22oz bottle into a snifter. 12/7/12 bottling date opened on 6/1/13.

Pours a pitch black color with a VERY light head. almost no head whatsoever. On the nose we have an extremely strong dark chocolate smell, as expected. The taste follows suit, dark chocolate dominates the palate. Alcohol is not apparent but you know it's got a kick to it by the burn you get in your belly. The feel is exceptional for this kind of beer, it's not syrupy but rather creamy. so easy to down this one. dangerously easy. heavy body with low carbonation.

Overall an exceptional imp stout, bordering on world class. I'd buy another if it was readily available.

Enjoyed on this on tap at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL in a 12oz snifter.

A - Black, opaque, pinky of mocha head which dissipates slowly, small amount of lacing.

S - Chocolate, Bourbon, carmel, booze (not bourbon)

T - Sweet chocolate, bourbon, Vanilla, toffee, carmel. Finish has a sweet chocolate, hoppy (3/10) and touch of roastiness

M - Nice and frothy, full body, creamy, very nice carbonation, bourbon-chocolate that tingles the throat

O - Excellent. Mouth is outstanding. Love the chocolate bourbon. Booze has no heat. Balance among all flavors is very well done. While this might be the lowest in the Bourbon County series -that is no means a knock- it is very very good.

Aside from being extremely dark and a dark brown head, the beauty of this one comes in the pour. The viscosity is visible the second it hits the glass and takes on a syrupy texture.

Smell is chocolate, coffee, and a warm boozyness.

Once again, GI impresses with its stouts. The cocoa is sweet, smooth, and rich. It has the robust coffee and malt notes that are typical in GIs stouts. It finishes bittersweet.

The mouthfeel is superb. Extremely thick and smooth. It is hot, but it's an aspect that contributes rather than detracts from it.

Overall, it's another successful stout from GI. It's a sipper. Take your time and enjoy it.

Got this at Roof Bros in Paducah, KY

Not sure how this is retired when this was bottled 3/25/11...

Bottle 1821 pours a pitch black with 3 fingers of mocha colored head. Above average head retention & lacing

S: Dark fruit, vanilla, chocolate

T: Follows the nose, toffee & booze warmth up front, some plummy notes. Chocolate covered raisins , plums black cherry as this warms, some dryness too, plus leafy hops. Finishes with tons of caramel, woody dryness, plus a bit of dark chocolate

MF: Chewy, fairly firm carbonation, smooths & thins out as this warms

A very good take on the style

22 oz. Bomber poured into snifter... bottled 13 days prior to opening

A- Poured jet black and very thick, almost syrupy, with aabout a fingers worth of dark mocha brown head which faded away pretty quickly into a small ring around the top... OA very nice lookin beer

S- Lots of dark chocolate, roasted malts, booze and hops. The chocolate comes at ya right away

T- Very sweet up front right when it hits your palate and fades into bitter dark chocolate and tons of malt. Hops are there just enough to balance the sweetness. Lots of warm boozy flavors on the end with chocolate being the aftertaste

M- Very thick and chewy almost. Had trouble finishin this bomber and usually have no problem with most Imp. Stouts. Definitely coats the mouth long after you're finished

O- Overall thought it was a very good beer and think it would only get better with age lettin more cacao come through on the palate... will definitely be gettin a couple more to put away for a year or two to see if it improves.

Bottle 3.25.11
First out of IL review; what an honor !

When I first saw the news on this beer being released I was really excited. I had good reason to, this is a great beer.

Pours a dark oilcan black with a healthy tan head.

Aroma of fresh cocoa nibs, (I have a package in my closet) roasted chocolate, roasted malts and sweet sugary malt.

Taste is extremely smooth with a very creamy body. The cocoa nibs kick your face in at first followed by a lot of sweetness and some hot boozy flavors. Yeah this is hot, but it is very good. One thing that goose Island does very well is make a massive variety of stouts. Clearly Goose Island was doing this right and BMC saw an opportunity to hop into the market of imperial stouts with higher margins. Enough about politics, on to the beer... There is a nice fresh vanilla flavor in here right now not even three weeks after bottling. Plenty of roasted malt flavors and a definite espresso roast presence. Absolutely no ashiness or bad aftertastes.

Of the cocoa nibbed beers that I have had, this is thicker than any of them. Similar in taste to Teddy Bear kisses which was great, this has a much thicker body and many more roasted / smoked flavors in it. Neither are overdone and this is another great job by GI. Light Carbonation which is about right for the style

A bottle split with onix1agr.

A- a steady pour yields a finger of latte colored head that settles quickly to leave just a ring around the glass and a small island of fizz in the middle. A good hard swirl brings back the cream on top but again its quickly vanishes. Black, black, black in color not a bit of light makes it through the body but there is the faintest of dark brown at the edges when held to the light.

S- dark roasted malts, chocolate, anise, coffee, brown sugar. Over ripe dark berries, and some molasses.

T- opens up with a sweet almost burnt malt hit that rolls into bakers chocolate and molasses. Coffee, touches of anise and dark fruit again. The balance is very impressive and each flavor while bold never over shadows the others.

M- full bodied but not too much. A bit of chew to it and a little syrupy. Nice light carb that does hold its own in this big brew. Small amount of heat from this very fresh bottle.

O- I'm all about this brew. Huge flavors that blend perfectly and make for a superb ride. Big enough to cure what ales you but easy enough to down a big ole glass. Well done GI hope you can keep it up with the new owners.

ah, viva la NY distribution...

a - opened the bottle and poured into a darkness tulipy snifter. poured a silky shiny black like night stalker and all the bcbs varieties...thin head showed and vanished leaving just the rim on the surface. slippery lacing and swirling the glass rebuilt the head for another few moments.

s - not dark chocolate, but milk chocolate. i was really excited to try this one fresh since i wanted to see how it was before any chocolate flavors vanished. bit of subtle coffee. nothing too much in any direction, good balance. the milk chocolate is a nice balancer to the nightstalker base. crisp smelling and i even get an almost pretzel type of a smell from it...like them chocolate covered pretzels.

t - yum. here's where the chocolate comes to life. much more roastiness in the flavor than the nose. a nice dark chocolate roastd coffee...like a godiva coffee.

m - good carbonation and nice body. a big step up from nightstalker's over sweetened vibe. cooling after taste and an almost chocolatey coating to the mouth. after a while the booziness really started to become noticeable.

o - overall, i'm rather impressed with this beer. i was not expecting the chocolate to add as much as it does. it is not overbearing like baker's chocolate or dark chocolate, but more of a silky hershey's milk chocolate. it really compliments the base beer and i'm happy to have a few more bottles of this to sit on. as i drank the beer the booziness came out and the chocolate seemed a bit in my face, but still a really big improvement on night stalker.

Got a few of these in a few different trades, this one was served in a Duval Tulip.

A: Dark as night, would call it black but it has a little brown to it, so maybe DARK brown would be a good description. Carbonation was present, but very limited. Small dark down bubbles came to the top, almost no head also. Lacing was decent also.

S: Lots of chocolate and lots of roast, in the back there was a little coffee, but it was limited. Also some spices came also, but they didn’t over power.

T: ROAST, it was a blend of coffee and chocolate. The chocolate was almost dark but has some mingling of milk. Also a little spice from what could be described as pepper. This is very complex and well rounded, only at the end is there alcohol flavor.

M: A little north of medium, not super thick, but still really well executed. Has a oily almost syrup like consistency, wouldn’t call this as thick as Ten-Fidy.

O: This is good, enjoy this. The nibs as a lot to this and make it pretty awesome, just sad well never see it again, and if we do it won’t be purchased because of the present situation of the brewery. Oh well, enjoy them if you got them.

Bottle date of 3/25/11

Poured into a Riedel Burgundy glass, served just under cellar temp.

Pours exactly how an Imperial Stout should, black and thick. Nice mocha colored head, resembles the froth of a properly pulled shot of espresso. Smells of rich chocolate, dark and milk. There is some booze here, but really is not a big deal at all. Coffee comes into play as well, not the beans but fresh ground espresso. If you have ever smelled fresh ground Black Cat from Intelligentsia, you will get the picture. Vanilla here as well.

On to the taste, full rich chocolate on the palate, big time vanilla, and that fresh coffee on the finish with some really nice hints of almond nuts. Not just a generic nutty flavor, but real almonds. I love the finish. Rich and complex. This stout impressed the hell out of me, and I'm really a stout lover. People complain about the booze in this beer, but to be honest, the booze added to this beer. It gave it multiple layers, added depth, and it wasn't hot at all. If you want a complex, flavorful stout seek this out. For aging, I only see this becoming nothing short of stellar. 1-2 years will be perfect. Stout lovers rejoice.

2012 vintage, bottled 12/7/2012 #1445. 22 oz bomber into a GI wine glass.

A - Pours a nice dark black body. Initial two fingers of light mocha foams fades into a thin cap with nice edging. Thick lacing with zero retention. A swirl has a layer of alcoholic legs above the foam.

S - Very different from the taste. Its certainly a cocoa presence, but with an almost cherry and nutty thing going on. Bitter and roasty chocolate malt. On the end is some rich chocolate fudge and vanilla. Very sweet.

T - Oh man! Where to begin!? This is one of the richest and most genuine chocolate flavors I've ever experience in a beer. I'm not talking "lolol, Hersheys bar in a beer" chocolate, I'm talking hardcore balls to the wall gourmet chocolate. Starts off lightly bitter, then comes a wave of dry cocoa powder...and it does taste "dry" somehow. Then the beer goes through a roller coaster of sweet, roasty, nutty, rich, grainy and chewy. Throw in a dash of vanilla and cherries and you have yourself one decadent and insanely chocolaty chocolate stout. It so rich and strong, but never too sweet or too much. Coffee or roasted malts? Nope...chocolate occupies everything here. So imagine dipping your tongue into cocoa powder fun dip style, and then taking a sip of a rich and silky stout. This is that experience.

M - Thick and syrupy with a medium to high level of carbonation. Zero alcohol presence.

O - Amazing, amazing, amazing beer. Seriously wowed by the chocolate profile it had. So god damned tasty!

I am glad I bought this beer! I was going back and forth on picking this one up. I kept thinking: I have way too much beer at home so I don't need more, I should spend money on my homebrewing instead of buying more beer, if I am going to buy beer, I think there is other stuff I want more. I had plenty of reasons not to pick this one up but something persuaded me to buy it. The other strange thing is that I drank it right away as I usually sit on big beers like this for months or years at a time. To repeat my first sentence of this review, I am glad I bought this beer! This beer was one of my favorite imperial stouts ever which is tough to say since I have had a lot of good ones. I guess now I have to go buy more Big John for cellaring purposes.

A lot of Imperial Stouts (Russian or American) are very roasted or hoppy tasted when they are fresh and mask the dark fruits, liquorice, malts and chocolate that I love to taste in an Imperial Stout. With Big John, the flavors I love were present with a fairly fresh bottle (only a few months old). I didn't pick up much cocoa in the taste or smell like the marketing tells me that I should. But as I just said, all of the other flavors that I love were there and this beer was damn smooth as it went down pretty easy. It essentially tasted like a Bourbon County Stout without the bourbon. This was for sure one of the better imperial stouts I have ever had and I hope I can pick up another bottle to cellar.

Poured into a Darkness goblet on 4/16/11.

Pours a oil black with a huge mocha colored head that takes several minutes to dissipate leaving no lacing. I would like to have seen more lacing but the head color and the rest looks great.

Smells of roasted malts and chocolate. It still has some bourbon to it but its mostly covered up by the cocoa nibs. The smell is very sweet and enjoyable.

Taste is much of the same. I taste mostly cocoa nibs and the sweet malts. The bournbon barrel aging is still there but gets covered up at the moment. I think that the bourbon may come out more in a year after the chocolate has faded.

Mouthfeel is medium weight, and there is a significant resin that sticks to your mouth and leaves the taste of chocolate. I like this brew.

Overall this is another hit by GI. While its a little on the sweet side and I wish it started with some more bourbon flavor its a great beer. I hope I can get this for awhile longer because I would like to age some.

Rich, hefty, and thick chocolate laden stout.

Presentation: 22 oz brown capped bottle. Simple black and grey silver design with an angled geometrical pattern making a reference to SOM's John Hanckok tower in Chicago. Side notes with bottling date, (03/25/11 1658) and dedicated glassware. Notes Alc. by Vol. (11.5%) Served in a snifter.

A - Black pour with small dark brown-ruby edges, short brown frothy head. Average to small retention with almost non-existent lacing.

S - Chocolate sense over boozy malt, faint hint of coffee. Characteristic sweet roastness with the chocolate growing in intensity as it moves.

T - Outstanding roasted notes, nice lingering bitterness, coffee is a hint as well, and then the chocolate shines, softer at first and taking full control in the end embracing the bitter touch with a nice roasted malty support.

M - Full body, creamy and thick, lasting palate with little but adequate carbonation, and a warming finish.

O - Rich hefty sipper. It grows on the palate as it progresses with a distinct Goose Island stout sense.

Notes: Nice twist with the base of their rich stouts BCS style, without the barrel aging. Logically the bourbon notes are absent and instead a chewy chocolate sense grows and permeates the palate nicely as it progresses. Pity about the way that this released come in such a limited, and hype ridden vibe. I like it but still would stick to the standard BCS. Wondering about how that merger with the big macro will affect their production. On a personal level, and for a variety of reasons, I'm not too big a fan of the building that the brew makes reference to. But that is another story…

Pours jet black with a dark brown head. In the aroma, a mellow roast and some cocoa. In the taste, bitter chocolate and a nice roasted presence, strating sweet and ending dry with a small alcohol note in the end as well. A small bitter bite and medium to bigger bodied mouthfee, with a semi dry chocolate and hint of alcohol in the aftertaste. Nicely hidden alcohol and nice chocolaty roast.

Enjoyed this bomber bottle out of a Belgian tulip glass.

A: Pours a dark black hue with a thin dark brown ½-finger head that quickly dissipates and leaves a wispy lace and no trail.

S: Strong malty syrup aroma with a solid alcoholic and chocolate background.

T: Very alcoholic malty flavor with some chocolate and coffee overtones.

M: Very strong and boozy. Very thick body and minimal carbonation.

O: Awesome imperial stout. A nice sipping beer @ 11.5 % alcohol by volume.
