Found this one deep in the cellar...22oz bottle (bottled on 4/10/08) poured into a Portsmouth 20th Anniversary glass.
A - Pours a bit muddy, medium brown in color, floating particulate, strong carbonation bubbles and a finger of creamy tan head with foamy lacing on the glass.
S - Sweet malt, grainy with nice caramel notes, mild molasses. Hops are practically non-existant, touch of roasted malt.
T - Malty base, roasty with a hint of coffee, caramel sweetness, touch of astringency, some earthy dirtlike flavors.
M - Medium body with a mid level carbonation that is very creamy. Warm, mild sweetness and roasted malts and a mild hop presence make for a super smooth beer. Easy drinking and quite sessionable.
O - Wasn't sure what to expect out of this one...a lower alcohol beer that has been sitting in my cellar for four years...could go either way. Happily, this still is a pretty solid beer. Not sure what it was like at release time, but it is aging pretty well. Whatever hops were there have largely disappeared and left this as a smooth malty beer that goes down easily. A bit sad that I missed this fresh, but happy that it still is a good, tasty beer.

hazelnut brown with just the slightest bit of a reddish tint to it around the edges. A very nice amount of carbonation was evident in the streams of bubbles that were chaining up from the bottom throughout the session.
mix of cereal grains and bready malts that gave it a very nice base to work off of. As it warmed up I detected some nice light grass like hop notes in there as well some of banana to be more specific that were coming through and giving it a little more balance. The aroma overall was pretty classic, maybe with a little tweak of hoppiness to it, but a good representation of the style in general. lots of malts, this was completely to be expected. Cereal grains, bready and earthy tones dominating, but then fading under increasing pressure from caramel like sugary notes that seemed to really bring out the best in this one. Deep flavor profile which surprised me to be honest. A nice long dry finish capped it off

Bottle: Poured a clear dark brown color ale with a large thick off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of lightly smoked malt with some residual sugar and some black chocolate notes. Taste is also a mix between some chocolate malt with light subtle traces of smoked and nuts with light residual sugar which provides a very nice balance. Body is a bit light with good carbonation. Good example of how to pack loads of while keeping the alcohol level to a reasonable amount.

Bottled in 2008 and tasted in August 2010.
A: mahogany brown in color with a one finger head which quickly fades but with good carbonation.
S: caramel with light rum smell.
T: spice, brown sugar, molasses.
M: begins with a bite and finishes with a lingering alcohol taste.
D: one or two bombers, definitely.

Paired with BBQ and some stupid sci-fi show my girlfriend likes. Sort of a I'll give you a beer if you watch my show trade.
Light brown color, almost a dark amber. Beige head recedes into a collar that corrals a thin skim. Leaves a lace squall it's wake.
A perfectly balanced beer in all aspects. Sweet cocoa and fruit aroma with a herbal hop floating amidst it all. Taste is impeccably balanced with a sweet caramel tinged toasted chocolate biscuit malt vs. a fruity kick with in the middle. Hops for flavor accentuation and balance. Great beer.

22 oz. bomber poured into pint glass.
A: Poured a clean, dark reddish-brown. One-inch head with lots of carbonation pitting. Dissipated fairly quickly but had decent lacing.
S: Roasted malty start with a mild hop bite. Dark fruits.
T: Roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate and caramel. Tiny bit of vanilla. Pretty good stuff.
M: Full-bodied. Super-smooth and silky.
D: Might be my first order next time I visit Goose Island's brewpub. Good stuff.

Thanks to MasterSki for this one. Shared with my wife with our supper, burgers & chicken wings.
Poured from a bomber.
Appearance: Pours a maple syrup colored body with a nice haze and a good sized head.
Smell: Reserved but i'm able to coax out some caramel & hops.
Mouthfeel: Nutty with some caramel and overlaid with roasted notes. An underlying hop bitterness nicely compliments the taste. A hint of chocolate in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Very smooth, tends to the malty side. My only gripe is for me i felt the carbonation was a little too high and hampered the mouthfeel. It was a little distracting.
Drinkability: Put aside the carbonation and everything about this brew is very easy to drink. I could see myself getting this again.
Overall: A tasty and solid offering that i quite enjoyed.

Poured from a twenty-two oz. that I've had for a bit less than a month. Bought two for 2.99 apiece from Binny's and had planned on saving this one for Thanksgiving, but totally forgot about it. Nice brown color, kind of like a dark cream soda. Head down from two fingers to one, seems to be staying at one. Even lacing. This is clearer than the one I drank before, I'll keep my eye out for a haze as I finish the bottle. Smelled malty and sweet like brown sugar, little vanilla as it sits. Roasted malt flavor, some dark sweetness. Not a whole lot of complexity but very pleasant to taste. I would characterize the mouthfeel as low-medium (rather than medium-low...), with some nice carbonation. Overall a good beer, but I'm not finding anything that would bump it over into the "exceptional brown ale" category.

A: Pours with a brilliant, 3 finger, white head, which holds on for some great longevity. The beer itself is colored with a reddish hued brown.
S: Very light and weak. Some burnt sugar smelling malt, and maybe just a touch of some spicier hops.
T: Nutty, malty. Some chocolate but pleasantly simple and nicely naughty. Filling and rich without being decadent.
M: Medium bodied and smooth, it could use some more sparkle and fizz.
D: Superb.

great head upon the pour (a little rocky, a little sudsy and a little creamy), and without rampant bubblies from below. very nice mahogany color, as well
very nutty aromas with some less rich caramel. airy, floral hop aromas. even a little molasses. good roasty character with a touch of chicory
tasty, too. nice depth of malt: some very decadent chocolately sumthin' all the way to a much flightier figgy sumthin'. fruit is by no means a predominant characteristic--stuff is cool and malty. sometimes i feel it's a little on the sweet side. some spice seems to make itself apparent but that could be a hop feature

I enjoyed this beer from the comfort of my own living room. From the bomber bottle to a standard pint glass.
Appearance: Pours a light brown/deep amber color with a billowy light brown head that stuck around for quite some time.
Smell: Caramel malt with a hint of chocolate and smoke.
Taste: The maltiness comes through in a great way. Caramel, chocolate and a little smoky.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and creamy smooth.
Drinkability: Very drinkable brew. Was looking forward to trying this and it was worth the wait. Will definitely seek this out again.

Pours dark copper with ruby highlights. When held to the light I get a look at a lot of suspended particles (probably yeast) which is a bit odd for the style. A thick, light tan head gradually dissipates to a stubborn lacing on the surface.
A very nice blend of malt notes hits the nose: caramel, light milk chocolate, flan.
Mouthfeel is right on for the style: light-to-medium bodied, but not too heavy on the carbonation.
The taste gives you a well-balanced example of how malt flavors can be just as complex as hops without being overpowering. There's plenty of flavor here (caramel, nougat, mild bitterness from the hops) but none of the flavors demand too much attention. Everything is in its proper place. Overall, a really nice brown ale that's well worth your time.

Poured into Sam Adams Sensory Glass
Pours 1 finger of light tan head. Fades to a thin layer but leaves some nice lace rings and splattered lace. Color is a dark chocolate brown on top with a clear copper brown on the bottom of the class.
Aroma: Rich malty chocolate with sweet caramel. I definitely get some nice earthy hops out of this one. This is a very malty beer.
Taste: Hmmm not a bad brown at all. I get a lot of roasted malts here. Chocolate and caramel being the dominate type. Earthy hops again are apparent. It is weird, but there are subtle fruits notes in the background of this beer.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy, a little high on the carbonation with a medium body. Ends with a roasted malt flavor aftertaste.
Overall, not a bad beer. I don't think this one is very special and should be part of their regular lineup and definitely at a lower price. GI bombers in general are a tad on the high side. But, it is drinkable and the bomber shouldn't be a problem.

22 oz bomber, with "Bottled On 03/23/09" label, poured into an imperial pint glass.
Appearance: Mostly clear medium brown mahogany color. Low off-white head quickly fades to a thin cap.
Smell: Moderate malt aroma. Specifically, a nutty, chocolate, roasted malt aroma that smells like it would be perfect for this cool evening. No hops or diacetyl.
Taste: Lots of malty sweetness. Roasted malts, toffee, chocolate, and hint of licorice. Has a sweet finish that feels a little weak. Low bitterness really complements the malt.
Mouthfeel: Somewhat light-bodied, which is fine for the style, but I like my brown ales a little more robust. Minimal carbonation.
Drinkability: Mild flavor, lots of sweet malts, and low bitterness lend themselves to making this beer suitable for drinking liberally. I should have bought more than one.

Sampled from a 22oz bottle in a standard pint glass. Purchased for me in Chicago by OnTheRoad.
A - Light brown with good clarity and a moderate beige head. Some lacing coats the glass as it empties.
S - Nutty and bready with a touch of coffee.
T - Nutty and roasted with a nice hop flavor. The label says it has Cascade and Tettnang. I brew with a lot of Cascade and it seems to be that flavor coming through. The flavors develop nicely as the glass warms.
M - Light and airy in your mouth with a moderate carbonation of very fine bubbles.
D - Mellow and smooth yet flavorful. This is one I'd like to have more of.

Picked this bomber up at Binny's for a nice discount- just $2.99. I will preface this by saying it takes a lot for me to be impressed by a brown ale. I don't have any particular aversion, just not a style I go out of my way for. I gave my beer tasting wine glass a fairly aggressive pour and got a really nice tan head on a reddish brown somewhat transparent body. The smell is nutty with some caramel, almost a burnt butter, nice and mellow. The taste was a surprise for a brown. Well rounded, not to sweet, nutty, not to much hop, just very mellow and easy to drink. I get a little lactose, which can kill a brown ale if overdone. The mouthfeel is nice and silky. All in all, if you come across one of these, pick one up. If you find them for $2.99 a piece buy more than one.

Got this bottle a few months ago at Sam's in Chicago. Says "bbe of 180 days from date on bottle - (unclear 1st digit) 04?/10/08". Regardless, pretty good beer. Poured with a small light tan head and no lace. Color is a clear reddish, amber-brown. Aroma is nutty malty & roasty. Flavor's about the same. Slightly sweet that is balanced with the tang of the carbonation. Body may be a tad thin, especially for the style. Nice finish. Session beer.

Naughty Goose has a dark brown color, and poured with about a one-finger head. Head retention was excellent.
The sweet, malty, nutty, chocolaty aroma is very inviting.
The roasted malt and the chocolate are the main flavors. The hops are a great choice: Cascades add their usual qualities, and Tettnang seems to add some sweetness. The chocolate flavor lingers, along with some nice caramel.
Although the beer seems to have a little more carbonation than I was expecting, it is still a great beer. I hope I can find some more.

Appearance - Pours a really nice brown with ruby/mahogany highlights if you hold it up to the light. 2 finger off white head that leaves perfect lacing all the way down the glass.
Smell - Malt, chocolate, dried fruits, maybe some caramel and roasted nuts. Really nice when poured directly into a glass standing flat rather then held at a 45.
Taste/Mouthfeel - Sweet malts, chocolate, and that roasted flavor are the main things, minimal bitterness and small amount of hops on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, creamy, and generally really nice.
Drinkability - Could easily drink a few of these. My bomber was gone pretty quick.
Definitely a brown I would turn to if I was in the mood for the style and certainly a couple steps above Goose's Nut Brown.

Poured from a Goose Island bomber. The beer is clear and brown with a reddish edge and thickish head. Malts lead the smell, sweet and a little bready, maybe a little fresh hops. The malt comes through big-time in the taste, a very sweet brown ale (as opposed to nutty). Roasted malt, caramel, some toasted or bready flavors, and again a hint of hops in the aftertaste. The light body makes this an easy drinking beer.

A - Very nice looking, strong colored beer. Dark brown with no hints of red.
S - Toffee, some chocolate. A little smokey, mild sweetness very hard to dectect. Nice malts.
T - Nice full flavor, toffee and some hints of chocolate. Almost smokey. Full bodied rich flavor. Smooth finish with very little aftertaste.
M - Not as heavy as I was expecting. Decently solid, the right amount of carbonation.
D - Easy to drink and full of flavor. Could do a couple of these without any trouble. Very nice beer

S: Nuts. Toffee. Sweet, lightly roasted malts.
T: Good amount of sweet malts, more toffee and some nuttiness. Light in flavor, but appropriate for the style.
M: Medium body with decent carbonation. While sweet, this one is not cloying and is surprisingly clean.

Poured into a duvel tulip.
One finger tan head, amber body, great head retention. Sweet malty nose, sweet malty taste, smoke, some dunkle like characters though, chocolate is buried in there. Light and watery mouthfeel, low carbonation. Not my favorite style, but a good example.

Perfect chestnut colored body sporting a two-fingered head not lacking in vitality.
Hints of toffee and pecans shrink behind a moderately roasted but otherwise unremarkable nose.
Everything is on display here; light nuttiness is followed by a sometimes chocolaty, sometimes fruity body with no shortage of roasted quality. The finish is delightful, owing bitterness to both roasted malt and elegant hops (Cascade must be bittering because this is Tettnang all the way). Toffee sits on my tongue long after everything has dissipated. This style doesn't get a whole lot better.
The beer IS overcarbonated or at least the carbonation is aggressive to the point where it inhibits my taste buds initially. Still, this is pretty close to a dream session beer for me. On its own, with food, whatever...this is long past due in bottles and a godsend for fans of the style.
