Review #300!!
I was lucky enough to get a bottle of this, even though Ohio laws didn't allow it to be sold in our state. So, I had to mail order and pay a slight premium. But I had to give this one a proper rating after tasting it a few times @ DLD 2010.
22oz bomber (love the red label) at slightly under cellar temp (around 52 degrees) into my Founders snifter. This black stout is completely opaque as expected. The head is a dark tan, almost brown, and is HUGE out of the bottle. Finally settles down to film and a ring. This beer looks great, a perfect looking stout and up there with the most picturesque beers I've ever had infront of me. My snifter is happy and so am I, now let's raise the glass!
Smell of coffee is the first thing that meets my olefactory. A nice rich roasted dark coffee that is fresh, not stale like so many other coffee stouts. Intelligensia makes some great beans and they seem to have been expertly added to this beer. There's also a healthy dose of bourbon and chocolate/vanilla. The only flaw is something that's built into the BCS base, and that's the "tootsie-roll" smell that instantly identifies this beer as a BCS variant. Not a fan of this - it's just an off smell to me. Other than that, this is close to perfect.
Woah! Great God!! This is a mighty fine beer!!! Tons of coffee that gives a great lingering taste (not too bitter as it coats my mouth after a sip). Bourbon presence is great, still a touch hot depending on where it hits in my mouth but not terribly noticable alcohol - a huge improvement from the regular BCS. Milk chocolate, rich and delicious. Not too much in the way of wood or vanilla, but this is afantastic beer and worthy of a "5" for taste.
Mouth is a touch thin. Good but thin IMO compared to the best feeling American Double/Imperial stouts.
Overall, this is a touch too hot to be called exceptionally drinkable. An elite beer but not the best in the world. I like KBS more because of it's chocolate and vanilla tastes - no "tootsie roll". The raspberry version @ DLD was better because it took the focus off that element as the sweet part of the beer. And, while this is great compared to the regulare BCS, wait until vanilla hits bottles.
A great beer to celebrate 300 ratings with! Here's to the next 300 and thanks to all the great traders I've been lucky to swap with! Cheers :)
