A fixture upon the Nouveau Craft. Cherries, some contained sourness, and well balanced. A masterpiece. Capone’s restaurant acquisition. Well saved for Oscar night -no wine shall compete with you tonight. Reddish tinge and cherry and yeast aroma. Lasting head and lace. Smooth mouthfeel. A sipper and full drinkability with dessert

The pour was very nice with a rich medium brown color and a nice light tan head on top. Nearly opaque with some light reddish touches to the sides and bottom. Deep horse funk on the nose with apple vinegar and ripe sour apples dominating the aroma with some light oak notes as it warmed. The flavor was crisp tart and very full. Ripe apples and sour fruits just ripping through the mouth. Puckeringly good here with a great carbonation level and really solid body all around.

Thanks to Jeff for sending me the set of three sour ladies from Goose Island.
A: Pours a slightly clouded dark amber/brown color with a finger of off-white head.
S: Nice cherry notes on the nose with a moderate level of acidity. It's tart, but not overly so. Mostly lactic acid with negligible acetic tones. Some mild oak character and almost no funk.
T: A solid amount of cherry flavor to the beer, though not all that tart. When looked at as an Oud Bruin, this makes sense. Fairly malty with a moderate oakiness and tartness, and perhaps a slight mustiness.
M: Medium in body with a fairly lively carbonation.
O: These first generations of sour beers from Goose Island have been pretty good, and I look forward to seeing them continue to improve.

Reviewed from notes. Pours a nice reddish-brown with a good white head with nice retention and a bit of lacing. The nose brings forward a good bit of oak along with some vibrant cherries and a bit of citrus. Good lactic presence throughout. The flavor is equally a nice with the fruit really coming through alongside a nice complementary oak character. Feel is slightly tannic with some sourness and a dry finish. Really drinkable. Solid hit from the Goose.

2012 bottling
Appearance: Pours a rusty color with garnet highlights; the modest head fades quickly to a ringlet leaving just a few dots here and there
Smell: Lactic cherry sour notes and a vinous, wine barrel character
Taste: Lactic cherry flavor, up front, with acetic sourness building in the middle along with oak notes; chalky and dry, after the swallow, though the lactic cherry quality lingers into the finish
Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: Very enjoyable to drink but really lacks some complexity - where is the funk and depth of flavor?
Thanks, BlueOkie, for the opportunity

Thanks to Pellinore1 for sending me this one!
Bottled on 10/1/10. 6.5% ABV per the label.
Pours a hazy cranberry brown color with a 1 inch puffy tan head that settles to a thin film. Thin streaks and dots of lace drip back down into the glass on the drink down. Smell is of sour cherries, funk, slight vinegar, and wood aromas. Taste is of sour cherries, funk, and lots of wood flavors. I am not really getting any wine in the smell or taste. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and bubbly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some nice earthy and sour smells and tastes.

Bottle: Poured a hazy reddish color ale with a large bubbly head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of tart cherries notes with some oak notes clearly identifiable with some funky yeast strain notes also perceptible. Taste is quite tart with cherries and oak notes mixing together very well with a funky yeast notes finish. Body is about average with good spritzy carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Easily drinkable with good restraint on the acidic notes with loads of complexity.

Served in a tumbler.
2012 vintage. Well, hadn't seen my man VDubb and his lady in some time, so I figured I'd bring over a bottle o' this to mark the occasion. It pours a dark faux-murky ruby-garnet topped by a finger or so of off-cream foam. Not all that much to look at, though, until it was held up to the light. The nose comprises dank/slightly tart cherry, light caramel/maple syrup (I couldn't untangle the two), and a touch of general earthiness. The taste holds notes of sweeter-than-usual cranberries, light tart cherry pit, light earthy greens, and a smattering of vague sweetness running beneath it all. Honestly, this aspect let me down a little, especially considering the pedigree of her sisters. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry, sticky finish. Overall, a pretty nice brew, but one that just didn't live up to expectations. There was hardly any appreciable tartness of any kind, the cherries came through somewhat muted (even transmogrified at times), and the whole thing came across as just too sweet for its own good (and, mind you, this is without coming across as sweet in any absolute sense whatsoever, only a relative one based on the style/expectations/whatnot). It's still generally enjoyable, but nothing to really celebrate too much.

Thanks to the other Matt for sharing this beer the other day. Beer served in a snifter of some sort. Beer is brown with a haze, almost no head, no lacing, apparent low carbonation, beer is also quite hazy.
Aroma is nice, acetic, lactic, cherry tartness comes through as well, mild sweetness almost.
Beer is light in body but has depth of flavor and character. The cherries show up in the back half of hte mouth and finish the beer nicely, there is a minor brightness on the palate from the organic acids, I enjoy it a lot.

Not sure who shared this or if it was sent to me in a trade, maybe I should enter my reviews before they are so old I don’t remember when I had the beer.
The beer pours an amber color with a white head. The aroma has a lot of tart cherry notes, as well as some brown sugar and a little bit of oak.
The flavor is similar. The dominant two flavors are tart cherries and brown sugar. There is also some vinegar notes mixed in, similar to what you would get from a Flanders Red. There is a little bit of oak and a little bit of tartness from the fruit.
Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A: The beer is clear red in color and poured with a thin layer of lacing covering the surface. A light amount of carbonation is visible from the rising bubbles.
S: There are moderate aromas of sour cherries and oak in the nose.
T: A moderate amount of sourness stands out in the taste, which has some complexities and notes of cherries and oak.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a light to moderate amount of carbonation. The finish is quite dry.
O: The beer is very easy to drink for the style because the sourness isn’t too strong and is fairly well incorporated into the overall taste.

This poured out as a deep brown color with a fizzy tan head on top. The head fades not leaving any lacing or retention. The smell of the beer is tart with cherries and has a subtle sweetness as well as plenty of oak barrel on the nose. The taste of the beer is tart/sour there is a good amount of cherry in the mix. The flavors are a little medicinal at times but it could be much worse. The mouthfeel is thin, with a sharp carbonation. The beer is dry. Overall it's a pretty good Flanders, worth trying if the price is right.

Dark amber brown, fair clarity. Not much foam, a wispy skim across the surface and a ring around the edge. Visible carbonation, much less foam than expected.
Light acetic aroma, cherry flesh and pits, soft oak and vanilla derived from the wood. A premature earthy Brett funk that is still somewhat underdeveloped.
Juicy and sour cherries, distinctly fruity, savory. Dry oaky tannins in the finish, a distinct cherry pit dryness. Lingering natural cherry in the aftertaste. Ample carbonation, it becomes creamy after the initial sour/tangy bite. Light and spritzy, nice for a Wild Ale, less so as an Oud Bruin. Very juicy and quenching, the dryness encourages frequent sipping. Age it longer to develop more Brett character, blend old and young batches, this will be a winner. Rodenbach Grand Cru still has a corner on the market though.

A: Poured a hazy amberish-cherry color with a small dirty white cap which fades leaving a still boring beer with almost zero lacing and bubbles.
S:Nose is sweet cherry, like artifical cherry like I would get a cheap kids drink blended with fresh red cherries. Bugs are present leaving some funky notes on the nose with some old wood and vinous smells
T: Initial red cherry, cheap tasting like its kool-aid. Thankfully the taste fades rather quickly under the bugs and barrel influence. A little booze sting comes on at the end. The finish is somewhat dry, tart and sweet simultaneously
M: Medium bodied, I felt undercarbonated, still and a snoozer
O: Not bad but mot something I would go for again.

(Served in a chalice)
7/31/2012 stamped on the bottle
A- This beer pours a deep walnut brown body with tiny strands of bubbles gliding up the surface. There is a light tan head of bubbles that fades away.
S- The red wine vinegar notes fade into that classic flanders red yeast and wet old wood hint but the aroma overall is pretty soft.
T- the tart cherries and wet wood flavor has a nice soft pucker in the finish wit some chalk and jammy note coming through as the beer opens.
M- The slight astringent bite adds some depth to the character and a gentle fizz supports the finish with no alcohol heat noticed.
O- This beer has just a bit of a bite to the astringency that grows odd with the chalky note. I do love this style but this one was a bit lack lust especially for the price. The cherry flavor was good but it didn't have a lot of other flavor in the mouth.

From 11/27/11 notes. Another big thanks to the Chicago Group for sending this one our way. Tried in the small tasting as Lolita, the last of the three sisters I haven't had. 2010 version, bottled on 10/01/10. Bottle 1500.
a - Pours a somewhat transparent amber color with one inch of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident.
s - Smells of tart cherries, brett, oak, sour raspberries and dark fruits, wine, spice, and Belgian yeast. Smells very tart, really loving the nose.
t - Tastes of sour cherries, tart raspberries and dark fruits, oak, brett, Belgian style yeast, light spice. The taste has a lot of cherries again, but it's not quite as tart as the nose was. A slight step down, though still good.
m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Crisp, pretty easy to drink.
o - Overall a very good flanders style beer. The nose is great and full of tart cherries and dark fruits. The taste still has a lot of cherries too, though not as sour as the nose. Easy to drink, and would definitely like to have again.

Thanks to lurchingbeast for sending me this bottle.
Pours a dark golden ruby color with burnt orange edges and a one finger off white head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind.
Funky barnyard aroma with lots of vinous fruit and prominent barrel, giving off strong notes of oak and vanilla. Lots of cherry and other dark fruits. Plenty of bugs and funk.
Medium body which is dry, very tart and puckering with lots of earthy funk, oak barrel and sweet fruit. Prominent tart dark cherry but still sweet with lactic funk. Subtle acetone presence at first that becomes a bit overpowering with a powerful, lingering vinegary/solvent finish. A bit harsh on the acidity but decent amount of sweetness and oak countering things. This had the potential to be a lot better but the acetic solvent character is just too strong for my liking.

Poured out a ruddy kind of appearance that you expect from a flanders oud bruin, equal parts amber and light brown. It would seem like a flanders red versus a flanders oud bruin would be a better beer to showcase the cherries, but nonetheless, here we are. Thin head, no lacing or retention really.
Aroma, fits the bill, minimal vinegar feel, the cherry is there, but at over 2 years old, this one is probably a little less on the fruit mouthfeel and higher on the sourness because of it.
I thought it was pretty good, but the brown malt made me keep wondering if this would be better suited for a red. I guess my natural preference is for a flanders red moreso than a brown, so that's probably all it is. The wood presence is there, but not heavy on the palate. For my money, I think this is far superior to Rodenbach. The wine barrel intrusion is minimal, but complimentary and tannic. That with the brett give kind of a chalky, grittyness that sticks to the teeth, pretty enjoyable at a little over the two year point. Not overly acidic, its kind of a more bretty then lactic sourness.
This is one of the more rare beer reviews from beerandraiderfan, as this review is being written immediately after consuming said beer this New Year's Eve, 2012. What can I say, everyone of drinking age isn't drinking anymore. In the end, its a pretty good and enjoyable beer. How many more will I continue to get a hold of? I dunno, there's one or two still in the cellar, it costs a little to get it shipped here, and its about the same price as Oude Tart, so prolly not much, but it doesn't mean this isn't a quality beverage here. . . man.

Bottle shared by Tim at Kill the Cellar Day, thanks!
A: Dark orange with a fast fading white head. Nice color.
S: Strong cherry notes with a slight medicinal influence. There's a touch of vinegar. Sweet malts are apparent and there's a firm lactic profile. I detect a slight mustiness and a dash of leather.
T: Lightly tart with a little sweetness. Cherries remind me a little of cough syrup. Light acetic acidity with notes of vinegar. Malt is moderately sweet. Light oak notes are present in the cherry finish. The beer possesses a moderate lactic sourness.
M: Spritzy mouthfeel with a medium body.
Overall: The medicinal notes are somewhat distracting but this is still pretty good.

650ml brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap, bottled date 10/01/2010 #1549 served into an Gouden Carolus goblet in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado. Reviewed live. ABV on this year is 6.5% according to the label.
A: Pours a one finger head of light cream lacing, decent thickness, and good retention. Colour is a dark murky cherry. Nontransparent.
Sm: Some sourness and funkiness. Cherry fruit esters. Red wine. Quite strong, but also subtle. A delightful near-perfect aroma. Very inviting and intriguing.
T: A lightly sour cherry build with some light funkiness and bacteria/wild yeasty notes. Complex, yet delightfully subtle. Exquisitely balanced. It's a bit understated with its flavours, but nevertheless quite pleasant. It's extraordinarily well done for the style. Cherry re-injects itself in the finish, closing out the beer on a stronger, bolder note whilst still maintaining the easy drinking nature of the beer.
Mf: Smooth and wet, and not too thick or too thin. No cream emerges, but this is in keeping with the general focus of the beer. Complements the flavours very well, mainly by simple staying out of the way. Not unique or particularly impressive, but well executed.
Dr: Extremely drinkable. No alcohol comes through - not that I was worried it would. I'd definitely have this again. I doubt it would age well at all given the low ABV, but I wouldn't mind trying. A refined beer.
This is likely best enjoyed on its own, unpaired with food.
It drank just fine out of my Gouden Carolus goblet.

Pours a beige head. Leaves some rings. Color is a clear ruby amber.
Aroma: Cherries, medicinal funk, oak, crayons, cherry pie filling, and a light sweetness.
Taste: Tart cherries, then sweet vanilla and spice. Has a slight resemblance of Rodenbach Grand Cru. Cherry pie filling.
Mouthfeel: Tart, sweet, and smooth. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends clean.
Overall, this was a solid sour. One of the better sours from the night. Easy drinking with some tasty flavors. I like it.

Had this one during the 'We Want The Funk!' tasting that was graciously hosted by beermeX2! Big thanks goes out to beermeX2 for sharing this one with the group! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller flute. Poured yellow-orange with a minimal white head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, cherry, fruit, and slight sour. The flavor was of sweet malt, cherry, tart, and fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. Based on the aroma was I was expecting this one to be a little sour, but instead it was tart. This was a nice welcomed surprised as it worked quite well with the cherries in this one. While this brew wasn't very complex it was quite good with what it had as everything was in the right portions. Definitely worth trying.

The beer is hazy and light brown in color with a small, fizzy, white head. Pleasant aroma of cherries, funk, yeast, oak. Brett character comes through nicely in both the scent and flavor. Bold flavor and quite tasty, with prominent oak and sour cherries. Light bodied with moderately low carbonation. Overall, a solid beer. I thoroughly enjoyed this and would certainly have it again. Muddy amber with red highlights. The small head dissipates completely after a short time. Nice sweet and sour cherry aroma, fleshy and earthy with a backing of earthy brett funk. Thin, dry body. Pleasant lactic sourness, some vinous fruitiness. Tart cherry finish, quite mild but very enjoyable.

Bottle shared with friends at Bristol, poured into a GI glass...An ugly weird pour, especially for an oud bruin. A clear medium pink with a light tan head, but good retention and lacing...The aroma is light vinegar but that's it...The taste is more like the aroma, but in this sense super boring only displaying the vinegar, a little tart. The finish is nice as vanilla comes out of nowhere.
This isn't bad, a good tasting but plain oud, just nothing going on worthy of spending $29.
