On-tap @ FoBAB.
A: pours a brownish red, great clarity, well retained white head
S: nose starts funky with mild Brett notes and lots of oak barrel, the lactic acid comes in waves paired with tart cherries. Lots of Oud Bruin goodness on this with the added dimension of a little funk. I like.
T: starts of with acidic tartness, notes of lemon zest and dark cherry take center stage, lots of oak on the end and some tannins as well. This is a very well balanced sour ale with the perfect balance of sour to sweet.
MF: medium body, high carbonation, spritzy mouthfeel, pairs perfectly with the swift tartness
O: this is a great take on the Oud Bruin style, lots of character, plenty of uniqueness, well done GI

on tap at the Clybourn Brewpub in Chicago. pours a drab sienna color wth a bit of rouge mixed in and a healthy haze. no head, no lacings.
aroma is mildly sour with fruity undertones and notes of vinous sourness, grape and cherry. a faint yeasty note keeps the aroma honest, while adding a bit of body to the mix. very well put together in the nose with just enough of a bite to make a statement.
taste is more of the same with a wonderful fresh quality and a very well proportioned profile. the balance between tartness and sweetness is spot on, leaving the palate wanting another sip. the fruit notes are subtle, acting more as an ancillary note next to the vinous sour character. a bit of vinegar-like sourness makes its way to the front after a bit of warming.
mouthfeel is great. medium bodied with a mild tartness and an excellent finish of residual fruit and sourness.
drinkability is excellent. exactly what a flanders oud briun should be. this is a near perfect concoction of fruit, sour and sweet notes that is not overly concentrated or overbearing, but just right in all areas. cheers!

22oz bottle, 2012 vintage
Hill Farmstead stemware - dark garnet hued brown body, minimal beige lace. Nice tart aromas, wood, tart cherries. I was a little surprised by this - I guess I didnt really realize what it was. An outstanding beer - tart (but not oppressive) cherries, brett, chocolate, dark fruity cabernet notes. I would like more of this.

650 mL poured into a snifter. Bottled 7/31/2012.
Appearance - Cloudy reddish brown. Not much of a head. Thin khaki collar.
Smell - Nice acidity. Oaky. Cherries. Very nice. Hint of malt behind it.
Taste - Cherry flavor blends well with the acidity. Oaky, kind if a dirty sourness but nice. Maltiness still comes through in the back.
Mouthfeel - Drinks well at first, but gets a little sluggish. Good sourness, medium carbonation.
Overall - Very tasty and pretty authentic Oud Bruin. Nice sourness and a well blended cherry flavor.

22 oz. bottle purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, 2012 vintage, poured into a FFFs Teku long-stemmed glass, drank 4/12/13 over two hours.
A: 4.25 - mud brown coloration, minimal clarity (can't see or read through), whitish one finger head quickly dissipates into subtle glass lacing, short alcohol legs
S: 4.5 - lots of tartness, tannins and Brett funk, lives up to expectations for a Flanders Red
T: 4.75 - as expected from the aroma...on the front of the tongue, there is a Brett funk and tartness that cuts through some of the more subtle flavors like cherry, burnt candy and even caramel; there is a pleasant sourness that lingers after a full sip
M: 4.25 - light-to-medium bodied, moderate alcohol and sticky consistency; very soft carbonation
O: 4.5 - a really nice American example of a Flanders Oud Bruin/Flemish red that borders on experimental with the addition of Wisconsin cherries; to be honest, I am just getting into sours now, but I really enjoyed this one, which excited my interest to further explore the style with other Belgian and American examples

22oz bomber bottle with a recycled paper label of a nice drawing of cherries on a branch. Below that in a weird font is the name of the beer. Above the cherries is a bottled year. To the left is the Government warning and to the right is a picture of the proper glassware, a description of the beer, and a bottled on date. My bottle was bottled on 7/31/12. It has a little age on it. Poured into an Ommegang Tulip.
This rose of a beer wasn't red in color at all. It was more of a deep dark cola brown color with some faint burgundy highlights toward the bottom. The color was pleasant, but the head of foam was a disappointment. Up rose (no pun intended) a good 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch fizzy light beige head of foam. As fast as it came, it left just as fast. It only managed to leave behind a miniature string of rings. No spots or steaks. Just the string of rings.
This beer was just ripe with the rich scent of sour and tart bing cherries. It was a little musky with some barnyard funk behind the cherries. The aroma then finished up with some sour green grapes, cocoa, and oak. It was pleasantly sour. It wasn't so sour that your nose immediately turned away at first scent.
The taste was very cherry based. It didn't taste like you were drinking straight up cherry juice, but you could clearly tell that the cherries ran this beer. The acidic level in this beer was on the low side. Just like the beer's barnyard funk side. Besides the sour and tart cherries, there was a few green grapes, a drop of raspberry, and a subtle oaky-ness at the end. This beer didn't let the barnyard funk or the oak run this beer.
The mouthfeel was medium bodied with lively carbonation and with a dry cherry based aftertaste. The aftertaste will filled with sour and tart cherries, green grapes, and red raspberries. Like the taste, the beer's musty-ness, acidic level, and barnyard funk was on the low side. It will take one or two glasses of water to rid your mouth (if you want to) of this dry cherry aftertaste.
It's a very nice drinkable sour and tart cherry based beer. It was so sour and tart to keep your tastebuds entertained. It wasn't so sour that you made a sour pucker face every time you took a sip. A winner from Goose Island. I would drink this again if I was given another chance.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a tulip. Bottled on 7/31/12, consumed a few months later (didn't get to post this review until now)
A- Pours a muddy brown, hazy body with a small 1" fizzy head that reduces quickly and leaves no lacing.
S- Smells literally like freshly baked bread, burnt toast, tart dark fruits, and candied sugar. Unique and interesting.
T- The first note I get is super tart apples/cherries. The tart fruit character pretty much overtakes the rest of the flavors, in the background is some grassyness and red wine. The aftertaste is almost smokey and bready.
M- Light, crisp, super refreshing. Medium-high carbonation.
I was pretty impressed with this beer. For the money, there are definitely other options out there, but try this one at least once. Could pass for a wild in my opinion.

Reddish brown. Small head. No lacing in a clean glass.
Smells like sour cherries. A little oak. Tastes like sour cherries, some oak, some lambic barnyard funk. Not so much funk.
Little complexity. Light refreshing balanced.
Would rather drink rodenbrach grand cru for the price

Bottle: Poured a hazy reddish color ale with a large bubbly head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of tart cherries notes with some oak notes clearly identifiable with some funky yeast strain notes also perceptible. Taste is quite tart with cherries and oak notes mixing together very well with a funky yeast notes finish. Body is about average with good spritzy carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Easily drinkable with good restraint on the acidic notes with loads of complexity.

I have had the pleasure to have the 2010 release on multiple occasions. This review is of the 2012 release bottled in July.
A-nice fluffy head and plenty of carbonation throughout the experience. Reddish-brown in color, slightly hazy.
N-ripe tart cherry and tannins in the initial nose, secondary was vanilla and sweet breast malt.
T-sweet tart candies lead with a cherry chaser, solid brown ale back bone reminiscent of Rodenbach, but with more Grand Cru tendencies.
M-lots of carbonation and sharp bite on the tongue. Nice background of funk and horse blanket action. I now see there might be a high point for this guy about 6 months down the road.
O-there are some real similarities between this and Supplication. It doesn't age as well, but hit hard up front in the some way. Good stuff.

2012 bottle
A- Pours a rusty rootbeer brown into my Excelsior tulip. A very thin strawberry tinged head whispers and bubbles, but fades away immediately. The dots of lacing that remain are sucked down by the surprisingly oily legs that drag them into the abyss. Nothing really special to look at, but not bad for a Flanders Oud Bruin.
S- Sweet, yet very tart cherries. Brown sugar, wet compost, horse blanket, old barn, and subtle hints of vanilla and cocoa hidden well underneath. Picking up some sour red grapes and musk.
T- Punched in the mouth with sour cherries strained thru a horse's blanket. Really no other way to describe it. Very faint hints of vanilla, cinnnamon, raisins, milk chocolate, brulee'd sugar and banana in the way back of the bus. It gets extremely funky as it warms up! Damn, I almost wished I had just drunk this straight from the cellar. Lots of spiced banana and black pepper on the finish.
M- Very complex, juicy, yet dry! Dry red wine, tart cherry, little touches of banana and spice. No carbonation at all. You can almost feel the bugs in your mouth! This shit is funkier than Bootsy Collins! Tons of barnyard and compost, but with such an amazing blend of fruit and spice. Truely awesome and awe inspiring.
O- Really sad that I only have one more bottle of this little piece of GI infection perfection! I gotta grab some fantastic goat and sheep cheese to pair with this one on the next go round. Absolutely stunning!

2012 bottling
Appearance: Pours a rusty color with garnet highlights; the modest head fades quickly to a ringlet leaving just a few dots here and there
Smell: Lactic cherry sour notes and a vinous, wine barrel character
Taste: Lactic cherry flavor, up front, with acetic sourness building in the middle along with oak notes; chalky and dry, after the swallow, though the lactic cherry quality lingers into the finish
Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: Very enjoyable to drink but really lacks some complexity - where is the funk and depth of flavor?
Thanks, BlueOkie, for the opportunity

A: Poured a hazy amberish-cherry color with a small dirty white cap which fades leaving a still boring beer with almost zero lacing and bubbles.
S:Nose is sweet cherry, like artifical cherry like I would get a cheap kids drink blended with fresh red cherries. Bugs are present leaving some funky notes on the nose with some old wood and vinous smells
T: Initial red cherry, cheap tasting like its kool-aid. Thankfully the taste fades rather quickly under the bugs and barrel influence. A little booze sting comes on at the end. The finish is somewhat dry, tart and sweet simultaneously
M: Medium bodied, I felt undercarbonated, still and a snoozer
O: Not bad but mot something I would go for again.

This poured out as a deep brown color with a fizzy tan head on top. The head fades not leaving any lacing or retention. The smell of the beer is tart with cherries and has a subtle sweetness as well as plenty of oak barrel on the nose. The taste of the beer is tart/sour there is a good amount of cherry in the mix. The flavors are a little medicinal at times but it could be much worse. The mouthfeel is thin, with a sharp carbonation. The beer is dry. Overall it's a pretty good Flanders, worth trying if the price is right.

A: A deep amber brown with a ruby hue and good clarity. Pours with a finger of rocky off-white head that quickly fades to just a ring of fine bubbles around the edge. This style should have an average to good head retention but tart sours have a tend to have a pour head retention due to the high acidity.
S: It's got a mouth watering smell that signals beckoning sour beer fan to enjoy a tasty treat. A noticeable acetic sour aroma with moderately-strong red currents. There is moderate dark stone fruit aromas of sour cherries and nectarines along with some malt character. There is a moderate oak aroma as well.
T: A great sweet tart balance in the front an a little bit of caramel and oak on the finish. The fruit is again red cherries and red currentsThe sourness is a little more restrained than the aroma would suggest but still dominates the flavor along with the fruit and oak flavors. The balance is moderately sour. The hops don't add much just a light bitterness the is obscured by the tartness. The finish is dry with an aftertaste the oak and fruity notes.
M: Very lively beer on the palate having a light bodied with high levels of carbonation.
O: A fairly good Flanders Brown is always and exceptional beer when I can get my hands on one. This one is somewhat above average for the style and Like that isn't too sweet, which is with the style just not my preference. This beer could definitely age well and i'd probably enjoy it even more in a year or two.

A: This poured an opaque dark mahogany with a bit of tan head.

T: It tasted like sweet and sour cherry and apple, with some vinegar and brown sugar. It had a clean and moderately sour aftertaste.
M: It was thin with moderate carbonation. Very light body.

Poured into the glass, Madame Rose was a little darker than I would have suspected. For a Flanders it was a fairly dark brown with a sour aroma. Little head was produced by this one, as would be expected for the style. In the initial taste, one can detect bitter cherry, dry tartness, grape skin, and tart cherry hints at the back of the throat towards the end. The sour notes linger in the aftertaste but are quickly brushed away in the aftertaste by the carbonation. I never really detected much of the barrel aging in this one. It seemed more like a Flanders with more intense cherry notes. It is a better than average interpretation of the style.

22 oz. bottle served in a GI Chalice. 2012 vintage, bottled on 7/31/2012/
A: Pours a slightly opaque brown color with sienna colored edges. A thin sandalwood colored head forms on the pour and recedes a to thin ring.
S: Tart cherry skins, some oak and a definite cab presence. Brett is present on the nose. Sweet cherry as well.
T: Oak, tart cherry skins with an underlying funk. Red wine grape, slightly acidic with a little bit of vinegar. The funk comes up much more on the finish with a slight hint of pale malt.
M: Medium to light bodied with a medium high carbonation level. Moderately dry finish.
O: Moderately funky with some nice cherry tartness to it. The barrel is nicely integrated and it leaves a nice array of grape and oak in the background.

A: Pours a hazy brown hue with a two finger white head that quickly dissipates into a wispy lace leaving no trail down the glass.
S: Strong tart and sweet fruity aroma.

22oz bottle split and poured into a snifter. Bottled July 31 2012. #1424
A: Pours a very hazy brown ruby with a one finger off white head. Cant see too far into this brew. Head dissipates to a thin covering after a minute or so.
S: Amazingly tart right off the bat. Loads of Brett yeast with an assertion of cherry. Oak is certainly a highlight of the smell as well. Fully encompasses the realm of sour, very impressive.
T: As you would expect from the aroma this one is a sour and tart beer. Very nice how they crafted such a blend of Brett yeast, sweet malts and cherry. Good oak aging, has a nice wine character to it. Very enjoyable.
M: Light on the palate, good carbonation. Real crisp finish from the tartness. Booze is lost in the wonderful taste. Will make you pucker up the first sip. Pleasurable to sip.
Overall this is phenomenal. A must try for any sour fan. Was very fortunate to get a bottle of it and hopefully you can be too. WIll seek this out for the rest of my life.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer, the final beer of our substitute Extreme Beer Fest
Note: 2010 vintage
Consumed 2/9/13
Appearance: Lightly cloudy, medium amber with a a lot of red tones - pink with some brown - small, off-white head - minimal lacing, okay for the style
Smell: Damp and musty - sour, in a decidedly lactic way - a damp, dirty cellar - Brett funkiness - some hints of red wine and cherries, neither is particularly prominent - hints of some acetone, but it's minimal
Taste: Damp and musty, with cherries - lactic sourness and something that tastes like an old, wet sponge smells like - wood and red wine - cherry flesh and skin - yeasty weirdness - funky, tart - lightly acidic with some vinegar - some pale and amber malts, vaguely roasty
Mouthfeel: Medium body, smooth, adequate carbonation, with a damp, sour finish
Overall: Madame, you are weird
This is not as sour or cherry-forward as I anticipated. But it does fit the weirdness I would anticipate from an Oud Bruin. Damp, musty, and bizarre. I'm curious what a fresh bottle would be like. Fortunately, I have one.

2010 vintage.
Appearance: Deep garnet. Relatively clear. Small collar of loose bubbles. Minor carbonation on the pour.
Smell: Tart cherry. Wood, distinctly oaky. Powdery Brett. Cherry flesh and skin. Some acetic edges. So much wood. Wet and vaguely sweet. Light earthy funkiness. Cherry juice and worn leather. Some juicy dark fruits, mainly berries. Slightly vinous.
Taste: Delightfully tart. Wet and juicy. Cherry flesh, skin, and juice. Loaded with oak. Powdery yeast influence adds some earthy elements. Touches of something floral. Rich backing berry flavors. Acetic tartness, almost citric at times. Warming pushes the oak up a touch. Cherry sweetness. Hints of leather. Mild malt backbone has some lighter malt sweetness. Slightly floral at times. Brett profile is pronounced, but not excessive. Nice job overall complexity. Tart.
Mouthfeel: Medium body and a moderate carbonation. A touch of lingering tart dryness on the finish. Wet prior to the finish.
Overall: The redheaded sister isn't bad looking either.
A nice blend of tart and.juicy fruit sweetness. Oak is a bit heavy in the long run, but it doesn't really hurt it.

2012 Madame Rose (bottled 7/21/12) pours a murky, hazy opaque brown with hazelnut hues at the edges of the glass when held up to the light. Minimal head and no lace (as expected for the style).
Smell is a little tart cherry, vinous red wine character, some barnyard phenols, and sweet malt. Not really getting any oak, but still smells pretty damn good.
My first go around with an Oud Bruin is certainly a good one. Cherry and lactic acidic tartness are accompanied by funky brett and some sweet and bready malt character. Some oak character comes through mid-palette. Finishes with a sweet/sour taste that lingers in the mouth.
Medium bodied with lively carbonation keeps this beer refreshing and crisp. Dry finish.
As I stated above, I have no experience with this style, but it doesn't seem too much different to me than a Flanders red. A great mix of sour and sweet flavors with some red wine notes and oak character to top it off. And although this is a great beer, I probably wouldn't buy it again just based on the price. But a great beer that I thoroughly enjoyed.
