Bomber to tulip. $20 for the single.
Vintage 2012, Batch number 1115.
Bottled 07/31/12, Sampled 26DEC12.
[A] A still pour. Without a head but an incomplete off-white ring encircles the glass. The body is dark brown, becoming ruby when backlit. Clarity is above average. No lacing.
[S] Impressive. With layered complexity. The lactic quality and tart cherries combine to make the first impression. Then the vinous character sets in. I would have guessed that Madame Rose was aged in Merlot barrels, but it's not hard to believe that Michigan's cherries would add the bold, dark fruity qualities that I'm experiencing.
[T] Punchy, dark, red fruits. Sweetness, then sourness. The drying, fuzzy tannic qualities bring it all together. Mildly acidic. The maltiness is somewhat lacking for a typical Oud Bruin but the lactic notes compensate more than adequately.
[M] Semi-assertive with just enough 'bite' to keep my interest high - yet plenty accessible for the preferred wine drinker. The body is medium-full and comes off of the tongue cleanly.
[O] Madame Rose is a fantastic beer and I would gladly purchase another bottle.

I have had the pleasure to have the 2010 release on multiple occasions. This review is of the 2012 release bottled in July.
A-nice fluffy head and plenty of carbonation throughout the experience. Reddish-brown in color, slightly hazy.
N-ripe tart cherry and tannins in the initial nose, secondary was vanilla and sweet breast malt.
T-sweet tart candies lead with a cherry chaser, solid brown ale back bone reminiscent of Rodenbach, but with more Grand Cru tendencies.
M-lots of carbonation and sharp bite on the tongue. Nice background of funk and horse blanket action. I now see there might be a high point for this guy about 6 months down the road.
O-there are some real similarities between this and Supplication. It doesn't age as well, but hit hard up front in the some way. Good stuff.

Another Blind BIF #4 invitational from AleWatcher. Thanks, Jeff! Poured into a snifter.
Smell of a sour, that pours with a reddish hue, a spritzy head that drops quickly. More legs than lacing.
Aroma of funky, cherry, lactic feet. Wood? Hint of vinegar.
Flavor of lactic sourness, tart cherries, cherry pits, no malt or hops. A little acetic as well. Finish is long, sour, with that "vomit burp" feel in the back of the throat. Sounds nasty, but apt.
Mouthfeel is dry, light, slightly puckering sourness with a tug at the cheeks.
Very nice wild, cherry ale. Not very complex or aggressive.

Chalk this up as my favorite Goose Island brew. I love a good Oud Bruin and it delivered even though I had chalked it up before trying as not having this much flavor.
Pour is a rusty brown with a tiny head of white bubbles
Smell of slightly acidic sweet cherry brown sour ale.
Oak, cherry and belgian ale in flavor with a nice sour tinge on the tongue. A bit of vinegar poking its head in with vanilla oak and green grape flavor. I read somewhere that the barrels once contained Cabernet Sauvignon which was a little surprising only because there is no purple coloring and sourness in barrel aged beers usually lends itself to a pinot noir / Granny smith apple flavor. Im sure some age on this will add additional complexity but it definitely tastes great now.
Just right mouthfeel for the style - not light or thick and a light carbonation which is standard as well.
Home run by Goose Island. I will be trying to find more of these.

22oz bottle from 2010.
Pours dark amber with a quarter inch head of off-white. Whisps on the surface for the duration with a few dots of lacing throughout the glass.
Aromatics are bracingly tart with cherries, sour apples, and a hint of balsamic. Wet hay and dusty boards follow through. Vineous and fruity.
Medium bodied with a sharp mouthfeel. A bit prickly.
Sour grapes, tart cherries, cider vinegar, and a malt backbone start the palate. Red wine and oakey tannins follow through.
Finishes with a lingering tart, fruity, vineous character and a juicy but drying goodbye.

2012 vintage. $14.99 from my local Binny's
A - Mahogany brownish-red, with a small off-white head that fades quickly.
S - I was expecting a little more from the smell, but you do get a little bit of that cherry smell. Maybe a little vinegar too.
T - Pretty sour up front, which got me really excited! Slightly acidic tasting too. Then, the cherry kicks in and it finishes relatively sweet. Each sip made me want another...it was very tasty. I was hoping for a little more funk or that familiar "horse blanket" taste and smell from the brett, but I didn't really get that at all. Maybe with a little age?
M - The mouth feel was pretty typical for the style. Medium bodied and refreshing.
O - If you like American sour beers, you have to try this at least once!

2012 Vintage
Bottled 07/31/12 1354
A= Pours a deep blackish brown color with some hazy brown highlight.s The head is a thin brownish color that stays solid as a thin skin on top of the beer leaving some spotty lacing behind.
S= Smells like a very nice oud bruin. Solid acetic acid aroma with a little lactic acid in it. A little vinegar. There is alittle oakiness to it and the cherries come through ever so slightly in the nose.
T= The taste is great! Normally I find oud bruins to be too acetic but this is a nice balance of acetic and lactic acids. The cherries are very well integrated making a great complement to the tartness. The oak is almost gone in the acid berry flavor but shows up when I burp.
M= Super dry and looong.
O= This is a great brew. It actually has a nice lasting flavor where as while Juliet was great the flavor drops quick. This is a great oud bruin. Seek this beer out.

Review 1100! 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled 10/1/2010. Pours fairly crystal clear red-copper color with a nice 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with nice retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of huge cherry, oak, red grape, red wine vinegar, pepper, earth, wet hay, funk, clove, and yeast spiciness. Fantastic aromas with great strength, balance, and complexity. Taste of tart cherry, red grape, oak, hay, pepper, earth, clove, light vinegar, pear, funk, and light yeast spiciness. Good amount of fruity sourness on the finish; with lingering notes of cherry, grape, hay, earth, clove, light vinegar, pear, apple, and light pepper on the finish for a good bit. Incredible balance and complexity of flavors; with a great sourness/sweetness balance; zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly acidic, syrupy, and very crisp mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Belgian style wild ale! Huge complexity and balance of sweetness/sourness; very smooth and crisp to sip on even with some acidity. Highly enjoyable offering after 2 years of bottle aging. I will definitely consider getting more to cellar.

This was quite the pain in the ass to track down this year... 2012 vintage at cellar temp:
Pours an appropriately murky reddish brown body - a finger of off-white to brown head swells to form the first set of lace and eventually fades down to a thick stubborn collar that laces just as well.
Mild funky red fruits... overripe cherry and tart brown sugar notes, very smooth, no obvious sour presence, incredibly approachable in this respect.
Oh that's good stuff... a reserved sense of tart cherry flesh layered over sweet dark malts and semi-sweet dessert flavors. Some floral qualities, a variety of pleasantly sour fruits... very smooth stuff. Won't make you pucker but the variety of nuanced flavors and aromas will keep you interested.
Good shit.

Bottle into The Bruery tulip, another huge grazi to Jeff (Alewatcher) for the bottle of this enchanting tonic. He has piles and piles of them by now (thank yous from me, that is).
Pours a murky red-brown, with a one-finger bone-white head, fizzy, that fades fairly quickly into a thin ring. Nice lacing though.
Nose is very brett-forward. Sharp zing of barnyard, a bit of old cellar mustiness, with sour cherry coming through nicely. The brown ale base adds a very light breadiness underneath.
Taste is a bit mellower. Nice blend of sharp barnyard notes, mellow acidity, with the brown-ale base providing a nice, round base to take the edges off. Cherry is certainly there, and the wine barrel adding a bit of richness as well, though with both staying underneath the brett presence. The Brett is really well balanced - no lingering cat-piss bitterness, not too citrusy, not too aggressive. Really tasty.
Mouthfeel has a nice bite from the acidity, with a carbonation that's just a bit softer than expected, adding to the overall mellowness. Medium bodied, lingering acidic bite in the back and sides of the throat after the swallow.
Overall, a really tasty beer. Quite refined, easy-drinking but with a bit of complexity also. Another winner - thanks again, Jeff!

Shared a 650 mL bottle of this with NanaBird from Goose Island Clybourn for $25. Poured from the 2010 labeled bottle into a Goose Island Pint Glass and has BOTTLED: 10/01/2010 1457 on the side.
Aroma- Very sweet and malty from the beginning. Hints of BLACK cherry throughout the smell and good amount of sourness. This was a great example of the perfect aroma for Flanders Oud Bruin.
Appearance- Pours a 1 finger head that has good retention. Light reddish/brown color body and has good lacing.
Flavor- Very fruity, malty, and is tart. Not much sourness in the flavor, more tart than anything and sweet finish. Very strong cherries all the way through the drink.
Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, Medium Carbonation, and has a sweet and tart finish. Perfect!
Overall Impression- While getting the last bottle (a current trend I'm enjoying lately!), this was well worth the cost! Awesome sweet and tart Oud Bruin with tons of complexity. Easy drinking and enjoyed the hell out of this one. Hope to see this guy again (even though its so limited).

Bottle to Goblet
22oz
2010 Bottle
Thanks to Gurudel for sharing
App- A very dark copper color with some browns and some ambers intermixed. Its semi-translucent with some clarity as you bring it up for a sip. A few bubbles developed but didnt really stay. No cling or lace.
Smell- Right what I was expecting. Slight acitic and lactic acids, big cherry, mild funk and brett floral notes with a ton of cab and tannin notes.
Taste- A great suprisingly flavorful beer. The cherries were prominant but didnt overly dominate the flavors. Each additional ingredient added to the beer and didnt take away or outshine the others. A great bit of brown malty notes remained and the cab barrel added a certain earthy dampness. The Brett didnt punch you in the face either. Very layered and smooth.
Mouth- A nice medium body with a medium carbonation. A bit of Brett, funk, oak and cherry remained. A bit tart on the finish.
Drink- It took Vince a while to land this 3rd sister and it was well worth it. I hope the 2 sisters I have are as good as this one was.

A: A deep amber brown with a ruby hue and good clarity. Pours with a finger of rocky off-white head that quickly fades to just a ring of fine bubbles around the edge. This style should have an average to good head retention but tart sours have a tend to have a pour head retention due to the high acidity.
S: It's got a mouth watering smell that signals beckoning sour beer fan to enjoy a tasty treat. A noticeable acetic sour aroma with moderately-strong red currents. There is moderate dark stone fruit aromas of sour cherries and nectarines along with some malt character. There is a moderate oak aroma as well.
T: A great sweet tart balance in the front an a little bit of caramel and oak on the finish. The fruit is again red cherries and red currentsThe sourness is a little more restrained than the aroma would suggest but still dominates the flavor along with the fruit and oak flavors. The balance is moderately sour. The hops don't add much just a light bitterness the is obscured by the tartness. The finish is dry with an aftertaste the oak and fruity notes.
M: Very lively beer on the palate having a light bodied with high levels of carbonation.
O: A fairly good Flanders Brown is always and exceptional beer when I can get my hands on one. This one is somewhat above average for the style and Like that isn't too sweet, which is with the style just not my preference. This beer could definitely age well and i'd probably enjoy it even more in a year or two.

The pour was very nice with a rich medium brown color and a nice light tan head on top. Nearly opaque with some light reddish touches to the sides and bottom. Deep horse funk on the nose with apple vinegar and ripe sour apples dominating the aroma with some light oak notes as it warmed. The flavor was crisp tart and very full. Ripe apples and sour fruits just ripping through the mouth. Puckeringly good here with a great carbonation level and really solid body all around.

Note's from Goose Island tasting event at Huntington Superstar:
Madame Rose – superstar tasting, pretty brown, almost flanders like. Thin head, little bit of carbonation. Smells very fladersy and cherry, tart. Pretty tart, but very good, has an almost vanilla caramel thing to it also, but very tart. Mouth is good carbonation, not to puckeringly sour overall very good.

edit 2012-03-14 popped a 2010 bottle into a goose island wine glass.
poured the classic reddish auburn flanders with a thin fizzy head. smells of rich cherry and some caramel. flavor is the same...mellow vanilla caramel cream with some cherries. mouth is very smooth. this is a fine fine beer. seems to have mellowed a lot since my first taste as it doesn't seem overly tart by any means and is very creamy in the flavor dept. my score would certainly be elevated on the mouth and the overall.

22oz bomber bottle with a recycled paper label of a nice drawing of cherries on a branch. Below that in a weird font is the name of the beer. Above the cherries is a bottled year. To the left is the Government warning and to the right is a picture of the proper glassware, a description of the beer, and a bottled on date. My bottle was bottled on 7/31/12. It has a little age on it. Poured into an Ommegang Tulip.
This rose of a beer wasn't red in color at all. It was more of a deep dark cola brown color with some faint burgundy highlights toward the bottom. The color was pleasant, but the head of foam was a disappointment. Up rose (no pun intended) a good 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch fizzy light beige head of foam. As fast as it came, it left just as fast. It only managed to leave behind a miniature string of rings. No spots or steaks. Just the string of rings.
This beer was just ripe with the rich scent of sour and tart bing cherries. It was a little musky with some barnyard funk behind the cherries. The aroma then finished up with some sour green grapes, cocoa, and oak. It was pleasantly sour. It wasn't so sour that your nose immediately turned away at first scent.
The taste was very cherry based. It didn't taste like you were drinking straight up cherry juice, but you could clearly tell that the cherries ran this beer. The acidic level in this beer was on the low side. Just like the beer's barnyard funk side. Besides the sour and tart cherries, there was a few green grapes, a drop of raspberry, and a subtle oaky-ness at the end. This beer didn't let the barnyard funk or the oak run this beer.
The mouthfeel was medium bodied with lively carbonation and with a dry cherry based aftertaste. The aftertaste will filled with sour and tart cherries, green grapes, and red raspberries. Like the taste, the beer's musty-ness, acidic level, and barnyard funk was on the low side. It will take one or two glasses of water to rid your mouth (if you want to) of this dry cherry aftertaste.
It's a very nice drinkable sour and tart cherry based beer. It was so sour and tart to keep your tastebuds entertained. It wasn't so sour that you made a sour pucker face every time you took a sip. A winner from Goose Island. I would drink this again if I was given another chance.

2010 vintage.
Appearance: Deep garnet. Relatively clear. Small collar of loose bubbles. Minor carbonation on the pour.
Smell: Tart cherry. Wood, distinctly oaky. Powdery Brett. Cherry flesh and skin. Some acetic edges. So much wood. Wet and vaguely sweet. Light earthy funkiness. Cherry juice and worn leather. Some juicy dark fruits, mainly berries. Slightly vinous.
Taste: Delightfully tart. Wet and juicy. Cherry flesh, skin, and juice. Loaded with oak. Powdery yeast influence adds some earthy elements. Touches of something floral. Rich backing berry flavors. Acetic tartness, almost citric at times. Warming pushes the oak up a touch. Cherry sweetness. Hints of leather. Mild malt backbone has some lighter malt sweetness. Slightly floral at times. Brett profile is pronounced, but not excessive. Nice job overall complexity. Tart.
Mouthfeel: Medium body and a moderate carbonation. A touch of lingering tart dryness on the finish. Wet prior to the finish.
Overall: The redheaded sister isn't bad looking either.
A nice blend of tart and.juicy fruit sweetness. Oak is a bit heavy in the long run, but it doesn't really hurt it.

Enjoyed this bottle out of a Belgian tulip glass.
A: Pours a hazy brown hue with a two finger white head that quickly dissipates into a wispy lace leaving no trail down the glass.
S: Strong tart and sweet fruity aroma.
T: Extremely sour and tart brew – with a good cherry and fruity background. Finishes on the sour yeasty side.
M: Medium body and medium carbonation.
O: An excellent sour beer. Definitely an acquired taste and a sipping beer.

The beer is hazy and light brown in color with a small, fizzy, white head. Pleasant aroma of cherries, funk, yeast, oak. Brett character comes through nicely in both the scent and flavor. Bold flavor and quite tasty, with prominent oak and sour cherries. Light bodied with moderately low carbonation. Overall, a solid beer. I thoroughly enjoyed this and would certainly have it again. 2012 poured into a tulip-
Appearance- Murky brown with highlights of red on the edges of the glass. Minimal bone colored head that fizzed away very quickly
Smell- Pretty faint on the nose, but there are lactic tart notes, cherries, and a big vinous character present. Also a bit of brett funk.
Taste- Very similar to the nose, just amped up. Lots of tartness, with a big cherry and funk finish. Finishes very dry as well.
Mouthfeel- Light, with medium carbonation.
Overall- I really enjoyed this one. My first of the GI Vintage ales. I liked it a lot, it makes me wish I didn't pass up the bottles of Juliet when they were on the shelf! I'd definitely grab this one if Flanders Reds are your thing.

Bomber bottled on 7/31/12 poured into a Maudite glass.
Appearance - Mostly brown with a slight hint of red...possibly maroon; cannot see through it at all. Virtually no head retention, no lacing on side of glass.
Smell - Smells ever so slightly like oak...almost like a wine. A very nice funky, tart smell. Subtle but inviting sour cherry aroma.
Taste -A nice rush of sourness goes straight to the tongue. Tastes exactly like it smells except even better. Nice vinegar taste but not as much as a full on sour ale. The cherries come out very well but in a nice, subtly way. The combination of the brett yeast and the cherries go really well together and make me want to find more similar beers out there. Neither the sourness nor the cherries overpower this beer. The oak came out a little more after it had time to warm up more.
Mouthfeel - The first thing you notice is the fizzy acidic carbonation. Light to medium body. The carbonation compliments the taste very well and just shows that this brew is very well-balanced.
Overall-While I can see that some are disappointed that it is not more sour or that the cherries don’t come out stronger, I think the beer is fine the way it is…hope it becomes even better once it has had some time to age. I wish I had a whole case in my closet instead of only two more bottles. Priced slightly high but still worth trying.

Even though this one is available in my area now for about $20, I bought this for $30 at one of the alehouses in Chicago.
2010 Vintage. The only reason I popped this one is because I saw the recent one on the shelf in my area.
Served in a wine glass.
A: Poured a gold/amber color, with about a 1/2 finger head that literally stuck around throughout the session
S: Definitely vinegary and then some. A lot of love went into this. Bleached out sourness which was cool.
T: Fruit and vinegar.... straight up, with a bit of Belgian quality in the background. Great flavor and drinkability.
M: A good bit of carbonation and then some The lacing on the wine glass was substantial.
O: Wow, this was a fantastic beer by Goose Island. So glad to try it!

A - Pours a slightly murky deep violet/red color. Two finger light khaki head fizzles away very quickly. Some lacing and a swirl coats the coats the glass in a thin wet coating similar to alcohol legs.
S - Cherries, oak, and vinegar. Just a touch of dirty socks and vanilla on the end. Pretty simplistic but nice.
T - Bright cherry notes followed by warmer notes of oak, vanilla, and brown sugar. Finish is of lactic acid and residual sour cherries. Very tasty. Mouth feel is medium bodied and creamy with plenty of carbonation.
O - A very solid flanders oud bruin. Very subtle and simple with nice strong cherry notes and lactic acid working off of some really great barrels. I'd put this in the middle when it comes to three sisters though.
