Pours a nice dark brownish red with minimal head. Slight aroma of cherries nothing intense. At first sip I am surprised as this was a " brown ale". It has a nice tangy cherry taste. Perhaps a little watery. Not too much fruit, not too much sour. Not a perfect brew... Seems like it is missing something just not sure what. overall tho Drinkability is excellent. Worth a try. I will have another please

2012 bottle
A- Pours a rusty rootbeer brown into my Excelsior tulip. A very thin strawberry tinged head whispers and bubbles, but fades away immediately. The dots of lacing that remain are sucked down by the surprisingly oily legs that drag them into the abyss. Nothing really special to look at, but not bad for a Flanders Oud Bruin.
S- Sweet, yet very tart cherries. Brown sugar, wet compost, horse blanket, old barn, and subtle hints of vanilla and cocoa hidden well underneath. Picking up some sour red grapes and musk.
T- Punched in the mouth with sour cherries strained thru a horse's blanket. Really no other way to describe it. Very faint hints of vanilla, cinnnamon, raisins, milk chocolate, brulee'd sugar and banana in the way back of the bus. It gets extremely funky as it warms up! Damn, I almost wished I had just drunk this straight from the cellar. Lots of spiced banana and black pepper on the finish.
M- Very complex, juicy, yet dry! Dry red wine, tart cherry, little touches of banana and spice. No carbonation at all. You can almost feel the bugs in your mouth! This shit is funkier than Bootsy Collins! Tons of barnyard and compost, but with such an amazing blend of fruit and spice. Truely awesome and awe inspiring.
O- Really sad that I only have one more bottle of this little piece of GI infection perfection! I gotta grab some fantastic goat and sheep cheese to pair with this one on the next go round. Absolutely stunning!

on tap at the Clybourn Brewpub in Chicago. pours a drab sienna color wth a bit of rouge mixed in and a healthy haze. no head, no lacings.
aroma is mildly sour with fruity undertones and notes of vinous sourness, grape and cherry. a faint yeasty note keeps the aroma honest, while adding a bit of body to the mix. very well put together in the nose with just enough of a bite to make a statement.
taste is more of the same with a wonderful fresh quality and a very well proportioned profile. the balance between tartness and sweetness is spot on, leaving the palate wanting another sip. the fruit notes are subtle, acting more as an ancillary note next to the vinous sour character. a bit of vinegar-like sourness makes its way to the front after a bit of warming.
mouthfeel is great. medium bodied with a mild tartness and an excellent finish of residual fruit and sourness.
drinkability is excellent. exactly what a flanders oud briun should be. this is a near perfect concoction of fruit, sour and sweet notes that is not overly concentrated or overbearing, but just right in all areas. cheers!

22 oz. bottle purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, 2012 vintage, poured into a FFFs Teku long-stemmed glass, drank 4/12/13 over two hours.
A: 4.25 - mud brown coloration, minimal clarity (can't see or read through), whitish one finger head quickly dissipates into subtle glass lacing, short alcohol legs
S: 4.5 - lots of tartness, tannins and Brett funk, lives up to expectations for a Flanders Red
T: 4.75 - as expected from the aroma...on the front of the tongue, there is a Brett funk and tartness that cuts through some of the more subtle flavors like cherry, burnt candy and even caramel; there is a pleasant sourness that lingers after a full sip
M: 4.25 - light-to-medium bodied, moderate alcohol and sticky consistency; very soft carbonation
O: 4.5 - a really nice American example of a Flanders Oud Bruin/Flemish red that borders on experimental with the addition of Wisconsin cherries; to be honest, I am just getting into sours now, but I really enjoyed this one, which excited my interest to further explore the style with other Belgian and American examples

Had at Twisted Spoke, Chicago, IL Bottled on date 10/1/2010. Poured into tulip glass
A: Copper Color with a slight crimson hew.
S: Initially the beer was too cold and the aromas were muted, however as it warmed up the following aromas showed beautifully: Tart Cherry/ Barnyard/ Apple Cider Vinegar/ Oak/ Spice-Clove & Cinnamon/ Vanilla (Barrel Notes)
T: The tart cherry comes through very nicely on the palate with the apple cider hitting the mid palate and the sweet cherry and lactic sourness taking over on the finish.
MF: Great carbonation makes the mouth come alive with each sip. The lactic sourness adds a nice creaminess to this beer. The finish is very good; this beer lingers on the palate.
D: Like the Juliet this beer is so dam easy to drink. Unlike some of its Belgium counterparts this beer goes down very easy. So balanced!
Overall:
Another stellar beer from the Goose Island Vintage Reserves. What strikes me most about this beer is its balance, everything is in harmony. While some Belgium beers of this style demonstrate more complexity you would be hard pressed to find a more pleasant drinking experience. Unlike the Juliet, I would be more comfortable ageing this beer as I think the secondary characteristics will balance nicely with the fruit.

Vintage 2012, bottled on 07/31/12.
Poured into a tulip.
Appearance
Hazy copper with red highlights. About 1 finger of head that recedes very quickly.
Nose
Black cherry, oak, sawdust, Sweet Tarts and vinegar.
Taste
Moderately sour upfront with lactic acid, lemon juice and sour pie cherries. Black cherry, maraschino cherry juice and concord grape jelly. The Cabernet Sauvignon shines through towards the back along with some very bready pie crust. Finishes with naked oak and sawdust.
Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, crisp, clean and moderately sour.
Overall
Perfect balance between the sourness, cherries, wine and oak. Really nicely put together. This is an excellent Oud Bruin.

Young 22oz. bottle - dated of 7-31-12.
Surprisingly opaque. Reddish brown color. Off-white head that only held up for a second. Mild carbonation.
Very excited to smell some brett in there. Nice citrus-tart-cherry smell. Dark cherry aroma. Some subtle oak. Smell doesn't go away like most beers. An hour later it is still very pungent.
Tastes wonderful. Thank goodness it isn't sweet. Cherry flavor is deep and concentrated. Comes off as sun-dried. Also cherry character mixes quite well with the wine barrel. (A hugely underestimated category). I assume it was red wine but I could be wrong.
Body is thin and dry even though plenty of sweet malt was use to brew up the beer. - There is a slight leftover caramel malt flavor going on. Its like a Flanders Red with cherries aged in wine barrels. Xxckxxx Awesome!
I'm actually totally impressed by this beer. This is the best beer sponsored by the Anheiser-Bush Co. I'm ashamed to love it so much. But respect is due where respect is due. Cheers to the brewers and coopers - keep up the good work!
There is sediment on the bottom. So I will most definitely purchase another and age it proper.

This beer was lightly chilled and served in a snifter. 2010 vintage.
A- The body of the beer is a bright clear rose red coloration. A thin white head resolves quickly. Whisp of lace mark my glass. The beer looks nice and inviting.
S- The beer has a very layered aroma. The aroma of sour cherries, tart cherries and sweet cherries rise from the glass. Supporting all this cherry is a hint of bitter sweet chocolate and a light vinegar twang.
T- Follows the aroma and gives a nice arrangement of sweet, tart and sour cherries, light balsamic vinegar a hint of cocoa and some nuttyness.
M- Yes this beer is acidic but it still manages to be smooth and refreshing. The body is light the carbonat is active and a little prickly.
O- This is a a delightful beer drinking experience. The sourness is very well balanced. This is one of goose islands better sour offerings.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into my trusty Loterbol tulip. Many thanks to wilfu for a major hook-up with this one!
Bottled: 10/01/2010
A: Pours an odd brown with lots of deep orange overtones. A small, 1/2 finger layer of eggshell foam spreads out on top and really doesn't do much before receeding down to a finely bubbled collar with no skim. Not very much lace to speak of. Clarity is on the hazy side of things and carbonation is right around medium.
S: Hard to get a big nose out of this. Sure there's some tart cherry and an obvious vinous red wine characteristic, but I was hoping for a little more oak aroma. As it warmed, I picked up a little green apple, lemon, and cherry pie filling.
T: Touches the same bases as the aroma but more intense. Lovely tart cherry and yeasty funk with some spicy black cherry, lemon, tangy grape, and tart berry. A flash of vanilla and/or coconut in the finish.
M: A sour that's balanced, very nicely, with spice, dry funk, astringent oak, a hint of sweet orchard fruit, and berry tang. Finishes dry and prickly.
D: So easy to drink. I loved that it wasn't sour just for sours' sake. This one's about balance and restraint. Fab!

reviewed from phone so it'll be short and sweet.
a. Amber with a hint of brown and a 1 finger white head that has somewhat poor retention and not much lacing. Nice crown though.
s. Tart cherries, oak, tannins, and a little nuttiness
t. This is a wonderfully balanced cherry sour, that I would put right up there with supplication tastewise, if not slightly ahead. Not overbearingly sour, but quit pleasant. Nice oakinee from the wine barrels as well.
m. Great, could have used a tad more carbonation.
d. Wish this was distributed, i'd have bought a case.

2010 Vintage. Pours an almost-clear, reddish-brown color with a small white head. Scent is heavy with oak and vanilla. Very nice cherry aroma with a sense of sour acidity. Taste is initially red wine vinegar, Lovely vanilla and cherry oak flavors. A lot of vanilla. Nice and tart, but not overly sour. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a pleasant, tart bite to it. Drinkability is very high. Overall, this beer was AMAZING! IT was a great well-balanced sour ale that met all of my expectations.

22oz bottle split and poured into a snifter. Bottled July 31 2012. #1424
A: Pours a very hazy brown ruby with a one finger off white head. Cant see too far into this brew. Head dissipates to a thin covering after a minute or so.
S: Amazingly tart right off the bat. Loads of Brett yeast with an assertion of cherry. Oak is certainly a highlight of the smell as well. Fully encompasses the realm of sour, very impressive.
T: As you would expect from the aroma this one is a sour and tart beer. Very nice how they crafted such a blend of Brett yeast, sweet malts and cherry. Good oak aging, has a nice wine character to it. Very enjoyable.
M: Light on the palate, good carbonation. Real crisp finish from the tartness. Booze is lost in the wonderful taste. Will make you pucker up the first sip. Pleasurable to sip.
Overall this is phenomenal. A must try for any sour fan. Was very fortunate to get a bottle of it and hopefully you can be too. WIll seek this out for the rest of my life.

This is a very nice beer, it's underrated in my opinion. Another BIF beer drank with the DC group.
The beer pours a very pretty crimson, thats semi clear with a little bit of bubbly head appropriate for a wild/oud bruin. The aroma is great, it's quite tart and highlights the added cherries beautifully. Some oak and wild yeast/farmhouse straw malt notes break through, reminding me of an aroma that Cantillon or other belgian sour would have. Also some sugary notes in the aroma to offset the tartness, nice.
The taste also has tons of tartness and also a lot of fresh cherries highlighted nicely once again, all offset slightly by the pulpy oak. A really long flavor that has a huge aftertaste, I really love that in beer, and this excels here, it's juicy and complex. The feel is very smooth and the carbonation is a little lower for a sour, I personally prefer that.
A really nice beer, I will buy it if I see it again.

Dark amber red color with offwhite head. smell is of brett and wild yeast/bacteria, with a hint of fruit. the taste is tart, but smooth, with a nice sourness and sweetness from the fruit. Not a lot of "funk" in this one and that's a good thing with this brew. the mouthfeel is lively. Overall, outstanding wild ale. I like my wilds a little on the sweet side and this one delivers. Deep auburn red/brown 1 finger light tan head which disapates quickly.
Smells of acetic notes, red wine vinegar, sour cherries, funk. The funk itself is very interesting, it's tough to pin down exactly what it is, it kinda reminds me of tom yum goong, theres almost a sour herbal(sage?) quality to this as well...
The flavor of this beer reminds me of an easy drinking less flavorful supplication. However I do find it much more balanced. The cherry and Brett mixture makes quite an acidic punch but overall this beer just seems more quaffable than supplication and reminds me a lot of it, most likely due to the similarity in style and process.
Mouthfeel is overall quite watery with medium carbination, acidic sourness is at the back of the throat sip after sip.
I'd have no problem drinking this all night and if it wasnt so hard to find and/or cost prohibitive I would.

Bomber botles 10/01/2010 into a Duvel tulip. Enjoyed mere hours after receiving it from Knifestyles - quite an extra Chris.
The body is red, bordering on brown. Fairly murky. Half-finger off-white head with loose bubbles and nice retention. Very pretty lacing.
Aromatically, this seems like an Oud Bruin/American Wild Ale hybrid. Acidic, lactic funk and some - but not a ton of - vinegar with a pretty clear bretty aroma. Lots of tart, sour cherries in the mix. This is quite funky, bretty and buggy, but the fruit sweetness founds things out pretty perfectly.
The taste, too, is quite fruit-forward. Tremendously wine-like and very sweet, it reminds me quite a bit of Supplication. Cherries are up front, but the back end is all funk. That sourness persists and persists, though it's never quite mouth-puckering or enamel-melting. Vinous and woody notes. Great sweet/sour balance here.
The body is quite lush - again, the comparisons to wine are merited. I think a little more carbonation could help enliven the many flavors at work, but that's a minor gripe.
An absolute pleasure to drink, and quite honestly a beer I could foresee sharing with somebody just getting into sours.
Nice body, but I think a little more carb would be good. I love how the fruits tempers the sour vinegar aspects of this beer. Drinkable to a fault and truly delicious. I'm once again ISO.

P: 22 fl oz bottle in to a tulip glass
A: SRM is brown and cherry red. Head was off white, bubbly. Medium carbonation. Medium/heavy lacing.
S: Sour cherries, spice.
T: Tart yet balanced and rounded. Cherries are very noticable and their taste is very well integrated into the beer.
M: Sourness and fruitiness give a typical mf for the style while leaving the palate in tact.
O: Fantastic. Really nice to see GI developing into one of the better breweries in the country, IMO. This is not just a solid effort, but a very good beer. Excellent use of cherries, their flavor is the star, but does not detract from the other flavors in the beer. Wish I could find this one on the shelves.

2010 vintage. Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Lost Abbey chalice.

S- our cherries with some sweetness and funk.
T- sweet and tart cherries, spice, toasted malts and nice amount of sourness.
M- medium body, high carbonation. Fairly dry and effervescent.
O- 5/10 sourness. Very good Flanders that has just a great balance of sour and sweet. Biga cherry flavor that keeps a nice tart, sour flavor.

A-Pours a very dark, turbid brown. Head is only a ring along the glass. Head is even dark. Not much lacing. Quite excited to dive in.
S-Tart and Brown. Has all the malty elements of a Brown Ale, but they are TARTIFIED. Sour chocolate milk (in a good way), tart cherries and vinegar. Sour oak. Hard to describe...dirty, sour fruits...regardless, it smells great.
T-The tartness is a bit more subdued and all the malty Brown notes really come out. Chocolate, toffee and caramel. But they are all soured-up. Chocolate covered unripened cherries. Sour wood, I could spend an hour describing all the weird flavor variations this beer showcases.
M-Light to medium bodied. Velcro-carbonation. Mildly sticky. Very, very drinkable. The mixture of sweet malt and tartness makes go down shockingly fast.
O/D-Awesome. Sweet and sour to the max. Balance is key. Worth every penny. This is one of those beers that may not be one of your favorites, but you will always remember it. Could be my favorite Goose Island brew though...yeah it is.

A: pours a deep brown with subtle hints of ruby, the pour creates about 1 fingers worth of off-white head formation that dissipates quickly down to a thin film. the carbonation is very high and you can hear the fizzy head being created as you pour it.
S: big and awesome sourness rushes the nose. a very nice balance of red wine, tart cherries and vinegar with slight Brett-funkiness. there is a also just a slight subtle hint of oak.
T: very similar to the nose. I get a big punch of sourness, Brett-funkiness, tart cherries (but they aren't at prevalent as I thought they would be), vinous characters and vinegar. all are in pretty nice balance with one another.
M: this brew falls right in between being light and medium bodied. it goes down extremely quick and leaves a very nice cherry tartness on the palate that creates an impulse to take another sip.
O: this brew was rather intriguing, as soon as the aroma hit the nose, I immediately began to salivate from the sourness. I was expecting a bit more of the cherries to come out so I was slightly disappointed in that. But nonetheless, this is an excellent sour brew IMO. I have to say that Juliet gets a slight edge as my favorite of the 3 sisters, but this is an extremely close second. Another excellent offering by GI.

This pours a beautiful cloudy brown with a tinge of red and a half finger of a light tan head that leaves some light lacing on the glass.
Such a wonderful smell... tart cherry with a definite oak aroma from the wine barrels a little brown sugar and hint of vinegar.
The taste is phenomenal... sour cherries, brown sugar, and wonderful wine oak dominates... sweetness then sour is a wonderful combination. A little fruitiness and then caramel comes into play as it warms as does the intensity of the oak.
This , to me, is exceptional! I love that it is not over the top sour... a pleasant sour taste with fruits and sweetness balance out wonderfully. I love the wine oak flavor and how it intensifies with warming.
The mouthfeel was like a good wine with a bit of carbonation.
I would definitely recommend this to someone who like a different kind of beer that isn't mouth puckering sour.... especially if you love a good red wine.
The price point did not bother me as this was gifted by a really good friend, but i would definitely buy again! :-)

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a tulip. Bottled on 7/31/12, consumed a few months later (didn't get to post this review until now)
A- Pours a muddy brown, hazy body with a small 1" fizzy head that reduces quickly and leaves no lacing.
S- Smells literally like freshly baked bread, burnt toast, tart dark fruits, and candied sugar. Unique and interesting.
T- The first note I get is super tart apples/cherries. The tart fruit character pretty much overtakes the rest of the flavors, in the background is some grassyness and red wine. The aftertaste is almost smokey and bready.
M- Light, crisp, super refreshing. Medium-high carbonation.
I was pretty impressed with this beer. For the money, there are definitely other options out there, but try this one at least once. Could pass for a wild in my opinion.

22oz bottle, 2012 vintage
Hill Farmstead stemware - dark garnet hued brown body, minimal beige lace. Nice tart aromas, wood, tart cherries. I was a little surprised by this - I guess I didnt really realize what it was. An outstanding beer - tart (but not oppressive) cherries, brett, chocolate, dark fruity cabernet notes. I would like more of this.

A - Pours a somewhat murky reddish brown with almost no head to speak of.
S - Nice cherry aroma with no medicinal notes present. Also slight vinegar and a faint amount of funk. Very nice.
T - nice balance of tart with a subtle but noticeable sweetness. A bit of vinegar character, but not mouth puckering. Also some noticeable yeast funk and and some earthiness on the finish. Very nice version of the style.
M - light crisp mouthfeel. Finishes pretty clean and dry.
O - been wanting to try this for awhile and was not disappointed. A nice tartness but nothing requiring antiacids. Would love to have again.
