On tap at Stubs. Haven't seen this one anyplace before, & was excited to try it.

Not brown at all, but rather a ruddy amberish, especially pronounced when held up to the glow of a big TV. Smell is perhaps the weak point, a touch of bourbon & malt, understated, not much going on.

Extremely Naughty Goose makes up for it in taste. This is what bourbon should taste like: light, smooth, muted, not overpowering or scorching the hair from my ears & chest, but mellow, soothing. This resting on a bed of toffee & sweet malts that melded grandly with the barrel characteristics. Full & creamy. I could have downed several of these without blinking & (maybe) without falling down. It's beers like this that remind you of that full dinner you should have had.

Excellent brew. Goose Island, swirl this one into bottles & sell it to us geeks. We'll buy it.

On tap at Stub n Herbs. Pours a dark amber color, bordering on brown, with a nice 1/2 inch white head that surprising left some wispy rings of lacing down the goblet. Caramel, chocolate, nuts, and some herbal hops are the dominate aromas, with a hint of alcohol. Upon first taste, I get some chocolate and light nutiness. After the second taste I started to pick up a little bit of smoke and sweetness. Something familiar that I can't.... quite... put... Ahh, that's it! Roasted marshmallows! Yep, that's what it is. The sweetness of a marshmallow with a hint of sugary, burnt caramel flavor. Hop bitterness is low, light earthy and woody notes on the finish. It's sweet, but not quite cloying. Complex to be sure, but some more hops would have added depth. Medium bodied, smooth carbonation. This was a very taste brew indeed, but at $10/10oz pour, I don't see myself having this one again any time soon.

Stopped by Stub and Herb for the Minnesota release of this treat. Pretty pricey, but well worth it.

The color was a surpringly translucent shade of dark nut brown. Creamy khaki head that had excellent staying power, and left delicate strings of lacing around the glass.

The smell was roasty, very sweet with nuts and toffee and caramel, and a very defined oak and bourbon character that lets the alcohol level be known.

To me, the woody and bourbon notes are much more muted in the nose, and more pronounced in the taste department. Initially you taste a pretty thick and sweet, toffee like brown ale, that in itself would be a good beer. Then not a split second later you get the woody and earthy character, followed by the bourbon. Alcohol makes its warming presense known.

To me, and I could be very wrong, it tastes as if the same barrels used for the Bourbon County Stout were used in this, or at least similar barrels.

The mouthfeel is definitely on the heavier side of medium, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's too thick. Very smooth and creamy, the bourbon has really mellowed out the flavors and taken away any hop bite that was there before. Great stuff. Drinkability is very good considering the alcohol level and the blast of flavours you get. I finished this one too fast, and if not for the price tag I would have ordered far more.

Overall, a solid offering from Goose Island. I can't say I've ever had a Bourbon Barrel aged Brown Ale before, so this was a unique and pleasant experience. I can't wait to try Night Stalker.

Served on tap into a small glass:

Appearance and Smell: Served a nice dominating brown with some definite gold/orange hue to it. Had a nice dense thin head which left sparce lacing down the glass. I also noticed quite a bit of carbonation for a brown ale. The smell was a suprise, noticed a thick whiskey smell with a underlying toffee and citrus like scent.

Taste and Mouthfeel: Taste was very unexpected. Started off like it smelled. The decent ABV showed itself in the form of a smokey whiskey/bourbon like bite which settled into a really thick caramel and toffee like sweetness. Really transformed in the mouth. Not too much hop presense noticeable, but it was there none the less. The great sweet aftertaste which the alcohol presence rolled over with each new sip is really which made the brew for me.

Drinkability: It wasn't a sessionable one thats for sure. Definitely a great sipper though. Really liked the brew and would definitely give it another go if given the opportunity!

I had this right after the Night Stalker, and while I thought it to be good, Night Stalker was a very tough act to follow. This beer struck as me being similar, but lighter and with significantly less hoppiness.

It pours black, with decent head. Aroma was dark and roasty with a good amount of chocolate and nuttiness. Seemed more reminiscent of a Porter to me than anything else. Flavor was really rather sweet and offered more roastiness, but again, seemed mild following the Night Stalker. Mouthfeel was pretty light.

Not bad.

I had this on-tap at the brewery.

Wow...I can't say enough about it.

It was everything I would ever want in the style, except available in bottles.

It was like a mouthgasm on ectasy.

Color of a nice thick porter, with the creamiest khaki head. Carries a head like a piping hot cup of hot chocolate, smooth with the tiniest of bubbles. Lacing layers like the most beautiful striations in a rock wall, but not chunky, refined.

Smells of the nicest, most balanced levels of roasted nuttiness, wrapped in the lightest of rich toffees, and ignited by the smoooth warmth of alcohol wealth.

This beer tastes almost exactly how it smells, slightly sweeter on the tongue, but soooo smoooth. With just enough bitterness that you salivate for more as soon as it hits your tongue, and then again while you drink, and then more as soon as you swallow.

Mouthfeel is somewhere in between liquid satin, and melting velvet. But clean enough that your mouth feels quite refreshed on the finished, due to the wonderfully balanced bitterness of the finish.

Drinkability isn't the right word to describe it. If I had an unlimited supply of this for one night, I would drink until I puked, and then again, and one more time after that.

Served in a tulip at Goose Island-Clybourn 3/5/09.

A: Served a dark caramel/reddish cola-brown color with a tall 1 or 1 1/2 finger head that's light brown in color and leaves a mess of sticky lace in the glass.

S: Aromas of toasted malt, caramel, dark chocolate, spicy licorice, and hops.

T: The taste is more complex than the smell here. Flavors of sweet caramel, bittersweet chocolate, grassy green hops, brown sugar/molassas, and dark fruit.

M: Thick, sticky, and creamy. Almost shake-like. Touch of dry bitterness in the finish. Quite sweet with a bit of fruity & tangy hops.

D: I've always enjoyed Naughty Goose in the past, but this will make it hard to go back to. Awesome!

A: Very dark; nearly opaque through a 5 oz. tasting glass. Light brown sugar head with moderate retention.

S: Sugary sweetness with residual fruit esters. The malt comes through under the fruits. Faint hop aroma.

T: Quite sweet with the alcohol hitting the back of the throat. Hints of black licorice; greater presence of dark fruits and at least a little black cherry. Definite bite of alcohol.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Crispness on the tip of the tongue and a slight tingle on the way down.

D: Can't get enough--hard to stop and write between sips. My
favorite offering from Goose Island yet.

Other Notes: Had at the Wrigleyville location on 02.28.09. The menu there calls the beer "Extra Naughty Goose."

From the menu: "A brown ale with a bite. An American interpretation of an English classic, with lots of domestic Tettnang and Cascade hops to complement the choclaty roasted malt character. Served in a tulip for $7.

A- opaque Red/Brown

S- Very nice. Can't really compare it to anything I have had before. Sweet Fruity nose.

T- Sweet fruit and malt. Toffee/carmel finish. Bittnerness shows up later on. As you let it sit it further develops.

M & D- Medium body, light finish. Smooth. Made me think I could drink a few more.

Pours a very dark brown color with a light tan head and a very thin ring of lacing.

Scent of dark fruits, and sugars. Not very complex but it had a very nice depth to it.

Taste of brown sugar, dark fruits, a hint of alcohol, and some earth. The best Brown Ale I have had in some time, Goose Island does some great work.

Mouthfeel is medium heavy bodied and very smooth, a low amount of carbonation carries it nicely.

Twice the ingredient of Naughty Goose is what the menu says.

A- This beer has a dense opaque brown body with a thin sticky dark tan head. The body is too dense to see much carbonation and the head fades to a thick ring about half way through the beer.

S- The smell of caramel malt with dark fruit has a nice sweetness to it. A faint green hop finish has a pungent note to it that helps support the malts.

T- The big dried fruit sweet malt flavor has flavors of caramel malt and banana taffy with a slight circus peanut note coming though as the beer warms. There is a sweet malt finish that has a hop bitterness starting to pop through as the beer warms.

M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a tight little fizz finish that clean the sweetness off the tongue and a warming soft alcohol heat that helps the process.

D- This beer is big and sweet but smooth and easy to drink. As the beer warms its nice to get some hop bitterness coming through that helps to keep this beer exciting.
