Pours a medium-dark brown with very little head that doesn't stick around too long. Smells strongly of brown sugar and raisins with lots of alcohol coming through. Taste is pretty much the same as the smell, but a little more complex with hints of chocolate and a satisfying alcohol sting. Mouthfeel is of average carbonation and thickness. Drinkability is pretty good for the 8.6 abv. I'll probably never get the chance to try this one again, but it's one of the better browns I've had.

On-tap at the Clybourn location.

A: Mahogany in color, with ruby slivers poking through under closer inspection next to a light source, and virtually no head. Looks dangerous.

S: Little to no smell, with just the right amount of sweetness and with only a tinge of nuttiness under very close inspection. Very muted, yet effective.

T: If this is a brown ale, then I'm Oprah Winfrey. Pretty much an English barleywine, very hot, but still it was of the candy-coated variety. I didn't get the same nuttiness I got from the nose, more like caramel and toffee. Complex!

M: Sticky icky, but in a good way. That really slowed me down and allowed me to appreciate the subtleties. Virtually no lacing whatsoever.

O: Pretty remarkable high octane entry for sure. They really need to bottle this one as part of a reserve series.

On-tap at the Clybourn pub. Pours a very dark mohagony brown color with a small head. Nose contains a bouquet of dark fruits, including sweet plums, caramel malts, and a touch of tobacco. Taste starts off with caramel malts that's move on to the dark fruit flavors that were picked up in the nose. Finishes with a nice bitter pone hop flavors mixed in with sticky caramel malts. Mouthfeel is a little thin an somewhat watery. Overall, this is a really nice imperial brown ale.

Reviewing the Extremely Naughty Goose from Goose Island Brewing Company out of Chicago, Illinois. This is a recent re-brew of a long-retired offering.
Score: 92

Tap pour served in the Clyborn Goose Island Brewpub and enjoyed on 11/16/12. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: The color is dark syrup, reminisce of King Henry, with strip of brown highlight atop the body. Served with a thin layer of beige head that settles to thin ring around glass. Below average lacing, average retention. 3.5/5

Smell: Roasted malt, chocolate, and faint coffee. Toffee and mixed nuts too. Faint honey-like sweetness. 4/5

Taste: Roasted malt, nuts, chocolate malt and cocoa. Toffee too. Light caramel malt and booziness in the finish. Very malty, but in a good, complex way. The flavors really linger on the palate. This beer i bold in flavor with a little boozy kick. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, low carbonation. Syrupy mouthfeel with moderate stickiness. Very malty! 5/5

Overall: An excellent malt-heavy beer, and one of the best brown ales I have had the pleasure to enjoy. I am very glad that Goose Island brought this one back!

Recommendation: Seek this one out if you get a chance, though be forewarned that the sticker price is a bit high. I imagine this beer would age well for some period of time, but have no clue how the 2006 bottle release is holding up.

Pairings: Beer bread with honey butter.

Cost: $10 for a 10 oz tap pour.

Enjoyed on tap at GI Clybourn, served in a snifter.

A: Pours a dark brown color with ruby highlights where the light hits. A tan head forms on the pour and recedes to a thin ring that leaves some soapy lace.

S: Chocolate malt with a light roasted malt background and a nice hint of sweet booze.

T: Big candied sugar sweetness with a nice mix of booze and chocolate malts. Nice roasted undertones with a little touch of honey and fruit. Nice toffee and nutty combination really round out a balanced taste.

M: Medium bodied with a pretty full mouthfeel. Nice medium carbonation level with a little sweet kick to it.

O: Very good. A little boozy and sweet, but it's really good and I really liked it.

I winked a little when I ordered this... It pours a very deep black-brown topped by a half-finger of glowing light tan foam. The nose comprises cocoa, light mild coffee, toffee, toasted malts, and light tobacco leaf. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some walnuts and oak, and with the toasted malts coming through as smokier now. The body is a hefty medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a slightly chewy feel. Overall, a damn fine imperial brown, one that I hope to see on-tap more often 'round here.

Let it be known, this is un-retired and back on tap at GI Clybourn as of 10/12/2012.

Pours a super dark brown, borderline black, massively opaque. A nice thick, bone colored head rests atop the beer, about a half finger high, recedes pretty quickly, lots of film stays behind. The aroma is great, super chocolate forward, a bit milky, but with nice smooth malts, nuts and toffee, They describe it as milk chocolate in the nose, I don't quite get that, but it's certainly got a dairy element and a chocolate element, but the nutty and rich toffee complexity adds a lot of character to the nose. The flavors are impeccable, lots of smooth malt, mild hazelnut and a bit of almond sweetness, chocolate plays so well with the hazelnut, not quite to nutella proportions, but complimentary flavors, lots of smooth dark malts, not quite grain like, but rich and flavorful, toffee, nougat and a touch of caramel are present. I was blown away by the depth of richness, without going overboard or getting too sweet, perfectly done. The body is great, milky, creamy and big, low carbonation, spot on, goes down super smoothly.

Verdict: Blown away here, I had to have another full pour of this it was so good. I can only imagine what the original barrel aged version was like, I kept thinking this could only benefit from some time in a great barrel. Even without the barrel, this was incredible, great smooth quality, rich flavors with a great complexity, satisfying in every way.

Cask at Goose Island - Clybourn. Served in a snifter. This batch was listed at 10%.

A - A half finger of persistent tan foam that settles to a near solid cap and collar. Nice spotty lacing, Dark brown with transparent ruby highlights. Good looking cask brew.

S - Cocoa and nuts, light floral and piney hops, rum-soaked dark fruits. There's a lot of fusel alcohol in the nose, which is distracting and quite unfortunate.

T - There's an unfortunate touch of earthiness, wood, and cardboard, particularly in the finish - perhaps this has been on cask for too long. Biscuit and cocoa malts, and thankfully much better hidden booze - nowhere near as hot as it smells. Maybe a touch of spice. There's some lingering bitterness as well.

M - Smooth, creamy, medium body, with obviously lower carbonation. There's a little bit of warming after a half glass, but nothing out of line with a 10% brew.

D - Thanks to the texture and the well-hidden ABV in the taste, this is actually pretty easy drinking. It just tastes kind of stale/old. I'd like to try this on-tap again to see how different it is - I had a taster a few months ago and I don't remember the same amount of dirt/earth flavor.

on cask at the Clybourn brewpub. pours a deep chocolate brown with amber highlights ad two fingers of rich and thick tan head. excellent retention and no lacings.

aroma is a rich mix of chocolate and nutty notes with a sharp alcoholic note alongside smooth roasted malts.

taste is of caramel and chocolate malts along with a base of alcoholic sharpness and a touch of dry hops on the back end. the nutty note from the aroma is drowned out by the hops on the back end.

mouthfeel is full bodied and super smooth. probably the only evidence of cask conditioning.

drinkability is decent. overall, this is so rich that it loses much of its 'cask' allure. that being said, it is still smooth and well rounded. cheers!

On tap, poured into a 7 oz glass, then into a goblet as it is too good to have just a little glass, at Stub & Herbs.

Dark brown, closer to blck than to brown, thin head that quickly drops to a ring. Nice, but the appearance might be its only flaw.
Sweet aroma, fruity and caramelized, with a faint piney note in there as well.
Full bodied, medium to low carbonation, feels velvety on the palate, and very easy to drink considering the ABV. Sweetish and caramelized, minimal heat, fruitiness, and a faint hoppy bite to pretend some kind of balance. Sweet but never cloying, an excellent beer that I wish would make it into a bottle.

On tap at Stubs. Haven't seen this one anyplace before, & was excited to try it.

Not brown at all, but rather a ruddy amberish, especially pronounced when held up to the glow of a big TV. Smell is perhaps the weak point, a touch of bourbon & malt, understated, not much going on.

Extremely Naughty Goose makes up for it in taste. This is what bourbon should taste like: light, smooth, muted, not overpowering or scorching the hair from my ears & chest, but mellow, soothing. This resting on a bed of toffee & sweet malts that melded grandly with the barrel characteristics. Full & creamy. I could have downed several of these without blinking & (maybe) without falling down. It's beers like this that remind you of that full dinner you should have had.

Excellent brew. Goose Island, swirl this one into bottles & sell it to us geeks. We'll buy it.

On tap at Stub n Herbs. Pours a dark amber color, bordering on brown, with a nice 1/2 inch white head that surprising left some wispy rings of lacing down the goblet. Caramel, chocolate, nuts, and some herbal hops are the dominate aromas, with a hint of alcohol. Upon first taste, I get some chocolate and light nutiness. After the second taste I started to pick up a little bit of smoke and sweetness. Something familiar that I can't.... quite... put... Ahh, that's it! Roasted marshmallows! Yep, that's what it is. The sweetness of a marshmallow with a hint of sugary, burnt caramel flavor. Hop bitterness is low, light earthy and woody notes on the finish. It's sweet, but not quite cloying. Complex to be sure, but some more hops would have added depth. Medium bodied, smooth carbonation. This was a very taste brew indeed, but at $10/10oz pour, I don't see myself having this one again any time soon.
