Père Jacques | 355 ml. | 8.0% ABV | 2011 vintage

Brewer: Goose Island
Style: Dubbel
Glass: White wine glass

Appearance:
Deep, dark amber. No head. No lacing.

Aroma:
Malted sugar, molasses, hint of alcoholic esters at the end.

Taste:
Much like the nose, the flavor isn't as deep as it is expressive. Waves of brown sugar and molasses catapult at my tongue. The sweetness is expertly mitigated by a bread flavor somewhere between the richness of wholewheat and the sourness of, well, sourdough.

Mouthfeel:
Supple and sinewy, but just shy of chewy. Carbonation is spot on—prickly, but not in-your-face.

Harmony:
Either the 2010 version was monstrous, or my palate is now much more sophisticated. I really like Père Jacques 2011, and not just because it's a bolder-than-usual Dubbel. The flavor is sufficiently sweet, but also expertly modulated so as not to be saccharine.

Would I get it again?:
Yes--had a real change of heart since last year.

Bottled on: February 22, 2011
Served on: July 26, 2011

Note: This came in a bottle, but Ba won't let me review the new vintage separately. My reaction was different enough that I feel a new review is merited.

Bottle 2/25/2011.. Reviewed on 5/17/13
GI Tulip

A: pours a nice dark caramel color, with small floaties. pour created about a 1/2 fingers worth of light tan head that dissipated rather quickly.

S: big sweet toffee, vanilla, sugar candy right up front. big bready/yeast notes complement the big sweetness in a terrific balance. secondary notes include a slight touch of alcohol, and a hint of spices.

T: follows the nose. big sweet toffee, sugary candy, biscuit, spice, and an amazing creamy vanilla finish. i didn;t pick up much fruit aromas in the nose, but there is some dark fruit presence here creating a bit more balance and complexity. alcohol is completely hidden. this is nice

M: on the lighter side of medium bodied. leaves a nice caramel-vanilla sweetness on the palate that excites the taste buds. just wish this was a bit more viscous.

O: it's been a while since I've had this brew, but I honestly don't remember this beer being this damn good. this vintage is drinking beautifully right now and definitely plan on aging a few more of these.

Pours foggy brownish orange with a finger of head and thick lacing. Some rising bubbles interact with floating yeast sediment.

Malt forward nose. A bit fruity, apple, some banana, jam, mildly spicy, bready, caramel and light biscuit toastiness.

Caramel and malty flavors upfront, biscuit, raisin, dark fruits and ripe berries, some booze and tinge of bitterness.

Feel is rich, delicious, warming.

Pretty good. Not quite on par with say...Ommegang's Abbey Ale but this is well worth a try.

2012 Vintage
Bottled 2/21/12
Tasted 5/08/12

A – Dark, hazy brown. Minimal head. Sediment is huge on this one. Lacing is thin and spotty.

S – Big and sweet. Dark fruits, raisins, plums and brown sugar. Barley-wine esque here.

T – Sweet and fruity. Fig, raisin, and caramel notes. Grape must, deep, complex flavors. Also quite sweet.

M – Medium-full, finish is long and almost cloying. Stays with you.

O – Interesting one here. Very barley-wine esque with less hops. Lots of strong dark fruit, and grape must notes.

Bottle with 2012 appellation.

A - Caramel colored, medium head
S - Caramel malts (Special B)
T - Sweet Tea. Was this fermented? Tastes like wort.
O - Too sweet to finish. Tastes more like an imperial amber than a dubbel. There's probably an audience for this beer, but I'm not a member.

Pours a hazy brown color with a 1/2 finger light tan head with decent retention and spotty lacing. The aroma has green apples, caramel, and some dark fruit. Unfortunately, the aroma is fairly weak.

The dominant taste is caramel. There is also some dark fruit and green apples, but there is no Belgian yeast in the taste or aroma, and nothing which males me think Belgian when I drink this beer. Rather disappointing.

Medium bodied with average carbonation. Nothing which really stands out here. There are better Dubbel's than this.

12oz Bottle from the Wegmans Dewit NY for 4$

Appearance -Hazy brown colour with a small size fizzy beige coloured head. It's too hazy to make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 2 minutes.

Smell - Malts, caramel/butterscotch, dark fruits

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel/butterscotch and malts. There is also a some raisins, leather, and a touch of anise. It ends with a malty dark fruit sweet aftertaste.

Overall – Reminds me a bit of a barleywine taste wise. It has a nice well balanced flavour and is very drinkable. Maybe just a touch too sweet, but the alcohol is well hidden. I'd buy a few more of these to see how they age.

Picked up one of these at a local bar and took home to rate. For me, Goose Island has some really awesome beers, but they definitely have their share of misses in my opinion. Very eager to try this one.

A - Pours as a deep reddish rusty color with the slightest of heads. The color alone is quite impressive to me.

S - Fruity smell, grapes and maybe some apricot. Nothing overpowering for sure. You really have to get your nose in there.

T - Bitter fruity flavor to and fruity throughout all the way through the finish. Hint of pepper on the tongue, not too much however.

M - Low-to-medium carbonation, but a full-bodied beer with a dry finish which makes you smile.

O - This is a very solid beer and a hit for Goose Island. I'd definitely recommend it to a friend and would love to have another.

A: pours a reddish brown, mahogany hue with a small off white head that slowly fades into a St. Bernardus chalice
S: smells of dark fruits and a hint of alcohol. sweet on the nose overall
T: tastes of dark fruits, slight spice, bready malt, and a slight caramel sweetness. swallow brings a bit of alcohol, spicy yeast flavor and more dark fruits with lingering sweetness but just a touch of bitterness
M: more full than medium in the mouth. carbonation is pretty assertive. it starts off slow and then quickly prickles the palate. slightly drying initially but quickly fades
O: Very good and to style. quite drinkable and well crafted. I haven't delved deeply into the style but this was a very nice introduction.

A - rusty-colored with little to no head and very little lacing. Something must be wrong with my tulip glass, because another reviewer got a whole bunch of head and a lot of lacing!

S - I'm getting yeast and fruit, mostly banana or does yeast always smell like banana? No one else smelled banana.

T - yeast and fruit.

M - Medium and oily. Decent carbonation.

Enjoyed this bottle out of a Belgian tulip glass.

A: Pours a cloudy brown hue with a thick, 2-finger, white head that slowly dissipates, leaves a nice trail, and ends in a solid lace.

S: Malty aroma with a dark fruit background mixed in with some caramel.

T: Dark fruit flavor with malty slightly tart middle and finishes on the smooth side.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Another excellent brew by Goose Island.

Bought a couple 12 oz. of 2012 vintage and cellared one. Poured into a wine glass.

A- Rosy copper, with a fizzy, yellowish/ very light brown head. Doesn't really retain.

S- Dried fruit, slight booze twinge, and a little biscuity nose.

T- Biscuity backbone with a bittersweet fruit/hop flesh. A fairly nice blend.

M- Slightly thick warming beer, a little dry finish.

O- I wasn't superbly impressed by this, but it is fairly fresh, and I can feel the potential. I'm interested in popping the next one open down the road eventually. I'll re-review.

2012 Vintage. I poured my share in a St. Berny glass.

Pours chestnut brown with over-rushed carbonation that fizzled out instead of retaining.

Heavy dark fruit nose, rich in date, raisin, plum, and grape; pairs with rich toffee and leathery notes. Sweet yeast presence and phenolic aromas.

Sweet and fruity. Plum, date, vanilla, toffee, phenols, raisin, grape, fusel. Complex and creamy and satisfying. Full-flavored and sultry dark with some nice finishing bitterness. Lightly medicinal. Very enjoyable.

Hefty thickness with a lush creaminess. Carbonation is fluffy and refreshing. Good feel.

Kickass dubbel from a kickass brewery. Pere Jacques is very much recommendable.

Re-review of the 2009 vintage, enjoyed in 2013.

Minimally scattered off white head. Very clear dark ruby color with noticeable sediment.

Moderate-high cherry and raisin, medium caramel. Light alcohol. Light yeasty phenols and other lightly fruity esters (apple).

On oxidized sherry taste, and oddly, a coin taste up front that lasts briefly before turning into some flavors reminiscent of the nose - high raisin, cherry and other fruits come in a bit lighter - apple, pear. Light caramel. Sweet malt. Medium light Belgian yeast spiciness. Light hop bitterness, no hop flavor. Balance seems more yeast forward. Finishes long and moderately dry with a lingering yeast, sweet caramel and fruity aftertaste.

Medium- light bodied with medium light carbonation.

Appears to have thinned out with age, as well as lost its luscious dripping caramel and lightly chocolaty malt body. Seems more yeast focused than other vintages. Light oxidized flavors apparent. I think I enjoy PJ best when fresh or with a little age (~1-2 years) on it..4 years might be a bit too much!

Re-reviewing for BJCP style study. 2011 Vintage, enjoyed in 2012(BA / BJCP)

Dark amber in color with reddish hues. Somewhat cloudy. Well forming off-white/yellow-tinted dense head, collapsing rather quickly. (3 / 2)

Bright fruity esters (Raisin, plum, cherry); Sweet malt (caramel, chocoalte); Subtle phenolic spicy-clove. Soft alcohol. Light belgian yeast, and a light noble hop. (4.5 / 11)

Rich creamy malt (caramel). Moderate fruity esters (cherry, raisin, light banana, and light apple). Soft spiciness. Low noble hop. Balance is toward the malt, with some moderate light hop bitterness. Finish medium-dry. Alcohol appears more noticeably as it warms. (4.5 / 18)

Medium-full body, Moderate high carbonation. Light alcohol warmth. (4 / 4)

Rich, complex well balanced beer. The fruity esters, spicy phenols, sweet malt, and light alcohol play well together. The alcohol was distracting as it warmed. Highly enjoyable, and a great representation of the style. (4 / 8)

( 4.28 / 43)

Bottle. 2010 Vintage Served in a belgian tulip, enjoyed in 2012

Appearance - Dark brown, with some slight reddish hues. The small-bubbled, slightly tan, quarter inch head dissipated quickly, only leaving a trim of tiny bubbles surrounding the perimeter of the glass. Its a beautiful looking brew.

Smell - Sweet malt and slighlty phenolic. The yeast brings out some traditional belgian must, along with some complimentary spice. Nothing is really standing out - its balanced, however not really bold.

Taste - Right off the bat the sweet malt that I smelled comes to life in the form of creamy caramel malts and rich toffee. I am getting a decent amount of fruit, but what is standing out is an almost marashino-type cherry syrup. I am enjoying how well the flavors are balanced, and coexitsing together. Some moderate spice comes out on the also moderately dry finish. Seems to exemplify the style well.

Mouthfeel - Medium-body, decent amount of carbonation, and finishes moderately dry.

Overall - I enjoyed Pere jacques. Perhaps a higher score would have been warranted if the nose was brighter, but I am not really complaining. I can see how the syrupy sweetness may become overbearing with a second bomber, but overall I thought it was tasty.

Had it out of a bottle, didn't pour it out so don't know what appearance it has but I significantly enjoyed. Definitely one of the best beers I ever had. It's a very smooth/juicy tasting beer. I can't believe it's 8% alcohol, that could be dangerous because they go down easy. Would highly reccomend spending the extra dollars for it because it's worth it. Was always wanting to try it and know I have. Leaves a good finish it your mouth.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Weyerbacher cuvee. Bottled 3/22/12. Purchased as part of a $12 mixed six pack at Wegmans.

A - Pours burnt red, bordering on mahogany. A half finger of off-white head sticks around for a minute or two, then fizzles out. The "sediment may form" warning on the bottle was spot on. Lots of floating flecks throughout the body.

S - Very sweet blend of fruits on the forefront. Smells a bit like grape-apple Juicy Juice. Pears and dates are also prominent. I am having trouble getting beyond the fruits to smell much of anything else. Some brown sugar offers a little bit of diversity.

T - Significant malty sweetness on the forefront. Pronounced apple, pear, and white grape juice flavors follow. Some molasses and fig newtons on the finish. The alcohol is masked by the big juicy flavors. As my palate acclimates, I find it less sweet with a more complex array of bready malts.

M - Chewy with good carbonation. Somewhat cloying.

O - I rarely drink Dubbels, but this one was pretty good. Very complex with loads of fruit and a nice grainy bread background. The alcohol is well hidden. A nice example of one of my least favorite styles.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a tulip. This is the 2011 vintage, bottled 7/29/11.

Appearance: medium-dark amber-orange hue with a moderate haze and a pretty strong effervescence. Head is a finger of frothy tan foam with a hint of an orange cast. Not much retention, but a decent lacing. This beer is a little bit lighter than most dubbels I've had, but it's decent enough.

Smell: right off the bat, the aroma is quite spicy and a little bit phenolic. Not sure if it's that or the alcohol, but this beer seems a bit "hot". Spiciness includes bits of cinnamon and clove aroma. There's also a hint of sickly sweetness underneath which I don't love. In general, it has a lot of dubbel-like character; sadly, this is not one which appeals greatly to me personally.

Taste: syrupy sweetness, much as in the aroma; again, a light spiciness with a hint of cinnamon toward the back. Phenolic character is much less pronounced in the flavor than in the aroma. There's a biscuitiness and a breadiness here which are not my favorite characteristics in a dubbel. Stylistically within bounds, but really not to my taste.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent level of carbonation, but not quite the mouth-filling creaminess I like in the style. It's okay, but not outstanding.

Overall: this beer just doesn't suit me. There are several ways to go about a dubbel, and, while this seems a well-crafted beer, it mostly hits each of my least favorite elements of the style.

2012 vintage. Bottle poured into tulip glass

A - ruff pour yields ver little head. There is no lacing whatsoever. Appears to have extremely small bubbles of carbonation. Dark copper color is very nice and the beer is very clear.

S - says it is Belgian inspired ale. Smells like a quad with dark fruit and eatery smell. Nothing remarkable, but pleasant smell.

T - quad it is. Like a sweet amber with a hint of Belgian funk. Tart finish. Fruity and sweet but wells balanced by the dryness of the finish. Good but not memorable.

MF - medium to full body. Flat carbonation. Is this how it was intended?

Overall...I think this is flat and that has impacted the whole beer in a negative way. So I will revisit with another one and update my review.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A little thin

A: 2012 bottled on 5/16/12 - From a 12 oz. bottle pours a cloudy amber color with a bubbly off-white head that settles quickly to a mist of bubbles. Lacing on the glass is good.

S: Caramel, doughy, bready, dates, candi sugar, raisins and some alcohol all coming through but without any one standing out too far. Hops are there but hard to smell.

T: Clean toffee-like malt caramelization that gives this beer an overall sweetness. Taste of dates, fresh brown bread, and some complex dried fruit esters with a touch of vanilla. Slight spice of the hops just to keep so much sweetness in check.

M: Medium to light body with a light, crisp carbonation and just enough of an alcohol warmth.

O: This beers was continually evolving as it warmed up and the more complex flavors came into play. It was a little too sweet at first to me but then it got a bit cleaner in the finish as it warmed and settled. A nice dubbel from Goose Island and very good fresh and I expect will age well too.

Not a big fan of the Dubbel. Goose Island made me more of a believer.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into my Chimay goblet. Nice color..Almost clear, deep reddish orange color. A real hard pour provides the briefest of delicate bubbly head. Don't blink or it is gone!!! No lacing to speak of.

Smell is fairly mild. Malty, a little dark fruit....not much in the way of Belgian yeast or spiciness.

Tastes pretty good. I find a lot of Dubbels a bit boring compared to other Belgian styles. This one is sweet, has a rich malty backbone and some dark fruit (plums and raisins) and a bit of alcohol bite.

Mouthfeel is rich and the bit of alcohol is inviting not off-putting.

I would drink this one again...If I find another one I might age it for a year or so in anticipation of even more flavor.

2010 Vintage. I poured this bad boy into a tulip.

A: The appearance is a light mahogany. Some light red and some light brown. I poured it with a mininaml foamy white/light tan head because I like to enjoy those few extra sips. Leaves some lacing as the beer dwindles.

S: Boy, can I smell the malts on this. Quite a bready aroma. This brew smells very sweet. Nothing wrong with that.

T: The bready, malty taste is the star in this show. I taste a little apple in here as well. Caramel is another taste that comes through and some dark fruits in this brew also. This is quite a good brew.

M: A medium mouthfeel with a dry finish. That's pretty much all you need to know.

Overall: This is a pretty solid brew. The 8% ABV is well and the drinkability is also pretty good. If I come across another 2010 version of this I'll probably buy it again. I recommend it to those who like a good, $3.00 a bottle dubbel.

12 oz 2012 bottle poured into tulip

A: Nice dark cloudy mahogany brown color with a light tan head, medium carbonation. Head lingered for about a minute with little lacing. Nice thick looking beer.

S: Sweet, malty, brown sugar, fruity, raisins and some nice floralness. This is a great smelling beer.

T: Sweet raisins, brown sugar, molasses, fruity with some good maltiness. Not floral at all, sweet maltiness balances out the moderately high abv and hides it really well. Although the balance is a little on the sweeter side but still very drinkable. Fits the style well.

M: This is a smooth beer, sweet malt character lingers a bit with some alcohol notes in the background. Warm feel comes around after a while but is enjoyable. Sweetness and fruitiness is nice if looking for a good beer to sip and enjoy after a hard days work or a good meal.

O: A little sweet but definitely fits the style. I'm really enjoying this brew, sweetness makes is a good beer to take your time with and savor. Great looking beer that smells even better.
