Here's a beer that must be taken seriously. If one is not careful it will kick your arse. I was drinking this beer on St. Patrick's day after my band played, sadly though it was straight from the bottle, due to there was no acceptable glasses to place beer in at my friend's house. So with this in mind I can't really answer the appearance and smell section due to the fact I couldn't see it and the smell was extremely concentrated which is why I market them as average because I cannot give an indepth answer. On to the beer, I liked it the taste was a stout without a doubt with a major bourbon after taste that knocked most of my friends over that tried it. The mouthfeel was thick and the drinkability I took it slow and probably couldn't drink another one in the same sitting.

This beer pours an inky black with a thin brown head. The head fades fast, leaving minimal laces.

This beer has a rich malty aroma. I detect a light coffee aroma. Chocolate is present also. I can detect a slight Bourbon aroma, hence the name. Some dark fruit aroma is also present. As it warms, the Bourbon aroma gets stronger.

This beer has a dominate flavor of Bourbon. It is hard to pick out many other flavors. I detect a small chocolate flavor. I can taste the burnt malts. It tastes sweet. But mostly, just Bourbon.

This beer is carbonated well for the style. It is very full bodied. It has an aggressive mouthfeel. It warms the throat as it goes down. It leaves a Bourbon like aftertaste.

I dont know if this would be a good session beer. It has a very aggressive flavor. Also, the alcohol content is a bit high. I think this is a good beer, but I think it could use just a little less Bourbon. Thank you karst for sending this fine beer to me.

Bottle (courtesy of Dalaamar): Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown color foamy head with minimal retention. Aroma of bourbon is quite powering as well as some chocolate and vanilla. Taste is a mix between some chocolate malt with hints of vanilla, coffee and oak. Bourbon presence is interesting but a bit too powerful for my liking since it brings too much alcohol, which is not something that I necessarily enjoy. Body is full and has a creamy texture, which I quite enjoy. Overall, this is a very interesting creation, which I’m glad, got a chance to try but I feel I would probably prefer the non-barrel aged version more. Also, this is more of a sipper then anything else and half a bottle would probably be enough for one session.

Woah!!!! Maybe Noah, I mean this is one big F-ing beer. Very little head very little lacing. Nose is of what else but bourbon, vanilla, caramel, mollases, a little coffee, and American oak. One drink and you can tell this beer is something different, something big, and something special. Enormous amounts of wood but in a very good way adding complexity too the brew. Prune, dark unsweetened choclate, mollases, pure vanilla extract, and alcohol glide across the palate in a race for the most complex brew award. This is a very big, very masculine beer. I'm going to have to try the other Bourbon brews from the Goose because this one has won me over. Cheers.

I was expecting a big hitter and got it....

Appearance: Looks the part...black with a slight redish brown 1/8 inch creamy head...

Smell: Reminds me of Dogfish WWS a little with a little of that soy sauce impression...big rich maltiness..oak..bourbon....vanilla...a very nice maple note...a little molasses....great smelling shit.

Taste: More subtle than I expected..I get a lot of maple/molasses at the start...a little charred bong resin....vanilla...oak....anise..licorice....a little of the soy sauce....bourbon soaked prunes and berries....quite complex and outstanding.

Mouthfeel: High side of full bodied...creamy...has a little alcoholic burn but fuck it's 11%, I didn't expect it to taste like Mich Ultra....

Drinkability: This is pricey and a treat but one of the best....I'd love to have 12 or so of these for special occasions....I'd love to pair it with a big rich Cuban cigar...

Ink black. Whipped brown frothing of good size on top. Retention is great as are the lace qualities. The aroma is of bourbon, chocolate, roast, char, tobacco, vanilla. Nice aroma. I notice the heat first and foremost when I taste it. And then I pretty much notice it the rest of the way. Cherry chocolate liquor type of feel to it. The char is present and some roast. Chocolate. A little smoke. But everything takes a backseat to the ethanol. The alcoholic bitterness lingers long after the sip. Body is medium at best. It could use a little boost. Carbonation is appropriate. I'm not a big fan of bourbon, but I AM a big fan of bourbon barrel beers. This one is just too damn hot. And it's coming from the beer, not the barrel.

Black. A thin tan head swirls over the dark liquid.
An almost whisky-like essence boils from this monster..oak, raisins, plums, and vanilla make up the majority of the intimidating, heavenly aroma.
Dark fruits, raisins, molasses, plums, vanilla, oak, chocolate, coffee, and brown sugar flavors resonate..all resting on a thick, syrupy body that just sits on your tongue until you damn near have to scrape it off. The smoke character is very well done and, most importantly, not overdone. The alcohol has a definite warming effect starting as soon as it hits your lips and doesn't quit until the brew is finished. I didn't think it was possible for me to love a Goose Island offering more than their Imperial IPA...but I think this slice of heaven may have just topped it.

amazing, outstanding, delicious. An obvious "must try" for any beer lover.

Appearance- Pours a watery yet very nesuick chocolate syrup viscocity. Soul sucking black and leaves a brown stain on my hand when I wipe the remnants from my face. Leaves a good ring around the beer.

Smell- A veryy sweet and viney combination. Lots of oak is also present mixed well with the whiskey aromas. Burnt wood, roasted malts, and vinuous creams.

Taste- Wow... such awesome flavor combos make this an excellent beer. Such sweet stout malts mixed with slightly dry, almost acidic bourbon andf grapr flavors. Not to mention the mocha and cream flavors lingering throughout the entire enjoyment of this beer.

Mouthfeel- Very creamy smooth start but eads into a slighty syrupy and heavy finish. Some decent hopping to help balance the good malty sweetness mixed with GOD fearing bourbon and oak flavors.

This beer is sooo viscous, that it literally can cake on to your skin if you let it set. Believe me... I know

Tiramusu, bourbon, coconut, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, peanut brittle, cake batter, fudge, and gramam crackers in the complex aroma. Black color. Really rich and full body, with a huge and brilliant mouth experience. Chocolate, fudge cake, with hints of caramel, along with an enormous barrel contribution, which gives hints of coconut, vanilla and oak. Wow. So rich and tasty.

this things a few months old now...
pours out black as a starless night and capped by a 1/2 inch tan head which doesn't hang around long.

smell is sweet and alcoholic and noticeably "burnt". also, i'm getting traces of molasses, soy sauce, wood, and plums. it's not a totally pleasant bouquet but i can work with it.

this brew is still very hot, as i'm getting a lot of alcohol right up front. i suppose it's bourbon but it comes off as rum-like, specifically captain morgan's (it's kinda spicy). it's all alcohol and licorice (anise). there is some sweetness up front but man it really finishes up with a healthy dose of burnt, smoky bitterness.

did they age this in barrels that had survived a fire? on that note, i don't know what charred wood tastes like but i think it might taste like this beer. it certainly doesn't lack for subtlety...

there's just something here that's not well integrated.

the mouthfeel - if you can let this odd almalgam of flavors linger for awhile - is thick, oily and viscous and leaves nothing to desire for the style.

ugh, i just got another whiff of this and it reminded me of a urinal, i kid you effing not.

drinkability? i'm forcing myself to finish this thing.

Pours like motor oil into a wine glass with only the thinnest of mocha heads. No lacing, no residual foam but at 11% ABV that's no surprise.

Smells of whiskey mixed with caramel malt - lots of alcohol in the nose, some oak and vanilla but primarily a strong bourbon scent.

Taste is both powerful and amazing. Lots and lots of alcohol burn here - it's the first thing you notice and the last thing at the end of each sip. While impressive it's a bit unbalanced and the only thing keeping this from a perfect score. Clear, distince flavors of malt, caramel, whiskey, oak, vanilla and alcohol. Appropriately sweet but not overpowering. The flavors come in stages throughout the sip, each presenting themselves before the next comes on. Very engaging.

Mouthfeel is very good - medium heavy but lighter that the pour would lead you to believe. Quite a good bit of residual carbonation to lighten the palate. No real dryness on the back end but the alcohol burn finishes nicely.

Very drinkable, very impressive. I'm glad I've got another one in the cellar and I'm looking forward to drinking it soon!

Bottle traversed from Milwaukee to Madison and shared with battlekow, gracias amigo boracho.

Pours pitch black with a duckass of dark espresso brown head. This beer screams intense on all fronts. Nose and taste are full of oaked whiskey, roasted espresso, and gooey caramel, vanilla bean, and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is chocolate syrup thick, but smooth and creamy. That 11% sure makes itself known and they tried to pack as much intense flavor to mask it as possible. Balanced? Not exactly. Delicious? Absolutely.

2006 batch rehash:
What an amazing beer. If only Glade would make an air freshener in this scent. I could smell it forever. Rich, buttery, vanilla, cocoa, tobacco and cafe mocha espresso. Simply decadent. At $20 a six this is a luxury item for sure, but one I will long for once my remaining three are gone.

Very dark brown to black in color with a dark tan colored head that quickly dissipated leaving nothing more than a few islands of carbonation in the glass, no lacing. Initial smell was a bit disappointing but as this one warmed it got vastly better and I found chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, and of course coffee aromas. Others have said how much the bourbon stands out, to me it was definately present, but I found the chocolate and coffee flavors to be much more dominant and much to my delight. Mouthfeel is thick and full bodied with low carbonation, just how I think it should be. I'm stuck on where to rate this for drinkability; it was very enjoyable throughout, but it is a sipper. This is not one you would expect to have a few of, but every moment of it is enjoyable, so I think a "4" is fair here. Wonderful beer and will get more before it's gone.

A beer I should have gotten around to earlier, but here it is. Let's run it down.

A - Black and thick just as I hoped it'd be. Leaves a nice hazelnut colored head, it simply looks delicous.

S - Very sweet and chocolately. The nice coffee and malt, with the bourbon lending the wonderful warming notes. The anticipation is getting bigger than the nose.

T - I've clearly been missing a good thing. Starts out sweet and ends sweeter. The chocolate and coffee is a bomb all through out. It is so rich it is almost painful, the bourbon and alcohol is very pronounced in the after taste.

M - Incredibly thick and rich, maybe one of the heartiest I've had. For a beer of what it is, this is wonderful, I wish more could do it.

D - One isn't enough, but two would be "two" much. If this came in a 16.9 ounce bottle, it would be fantastic. Over all though, this beer is big, thick and high in alcohol but damnit, it still slinks on down.

Well done Goose Island.

A - Black with a thin brown creamy head. Very inviting.

S - Strong caramel and toffee scent, hints of burnt brown sugar, vanilla, chocolate and a strong whiskey presence

T - Chocolate and caramel up front with a sweet brown sugar middle and then wham, the whiskey flavor hits you. Hints of vanilla and oak follow.

M - Thick, oily and creamy with a very strong warming presence. Lightly carbonated.

D - Very smooth for a high alcohol beer. Perfect for a cold winter's night next to the fire or as a rich dessert. Definitely a beer that would meet any special occasion I invite it to.

What a difficult beer to review. This is not a balanced beer by any means. You really have to like bourbon to like this beer... really. Poured into a large snifter, this was quite an amazing pour, thick viscous black with angry cappuccino-colored frothy head that recedes to just a ring around the glass. The smell might be the absolute best thing about this beer: coconut, chocolate (think almond joy candy bars), a little banana, and some noticable alcoholic fumes that are a fitting preview of what's to come. The taste introduces itself with just the slightest char, which is quickly smashed to bits by a straight-up bourbon flavor, but with a bit more malty goodness, as if you made a chocolate cake with bourbon (I have, and it's good), or perhaps had a black organic coffee with a hefty dose of bourbon. The alcohol is not that well-hidden, honestly, and that means drinkability is where I have to take off the points. Age this for, say, half a decade or more, and then enjoy the fireworks.

Jet black pour with a thin, tightly-packed brown head. The head didn't linger or lace too well, but it was nice while it lasted.

Smell is alcohol, roasted malts, chocolate, and prunes. Really, the alcohol comes through much more clearly than anything else here.

Flavor is still quite hot with alcohol, but more complex with the chocolate and roasted grain flavors coming through more clearly, and the vanilla notes from the barrel aging are very evident. The vanilla lingers on the pallet a bit, as does a light bourbon flavor. Mouthfeel is massively thick and chewy.

Overall: I think that given maybe two-three years in the cellar, this one could truly kick ass. As it is, it's a bit too boozy and hot with not quite enough complexity to really stand with the best stouts.

nicotine-stained black, brown resin cascades down the glass behind the light brown creamy foam that is left.. tiny spots on the glass remind me this is beer, not liquor.

the nose of this beer is enveloped in a booze haze.. very deep caramel scent in its sweet whisky character. toffee notes collide with raw vanilla bean and burnt sugar crisp.

boy does this beer taste good. and not good like your regular favorite beer, but good like a special treat beer. after opening and taking the first sip, i thought, "maybe i should have saved this for a special occasion!". but like giamatti says in sideways, the beer IS the special occasion.. or wine. whatever. this creamy, caramel based stout is accentuated by carbon-charred sweet woody notes and the mossy character of the bourbon barrels. the bourbon stands out enough and the abv is high enough to bring this beer to the apex of quality, approaching the threshhold of fine aged liquor. earthy, spirit qualities linger in the boozy finish.. a true brew to savour and a sipper that has held up to a year like a champ.

body is thick yet smooth, a light brew this is not.. but a light brew i do not want from something with this flavor depth. i want to sip it, and i want to feel the velvet of each small, well-planned sip.

the best beer goose island has ever made, hands-down.

Drank in Chicago, my notes have me confused as to where it was consumed, eithe the hop leaf or the map room, either way, here goes. I was waiting a long time to try this one and it did not dissapoint. black-hole black in colours, light absorbing black, blacker than black, or none-more-black, as the first spinal tap album is. Aromas of in your face hot bourbon. Evan williams or rebel yell maybe...but more likely the mark. Vanilla, cocoa, exotic fruits, and nuts all jump into the air and fill the olfactorys upon opening and pouring this beer. Taste is hot bourbon big ass roasted maltiness, vanilla, cocoa, fine dark french-press coffee and more. A real palate raper if there ever was one. Mouthfeel is thick as all hell and drinkability is great for such a big beer. Damn man this one is serious. Pricey? Yes, but worth it. I wish it was easy to get more! Damn you Goose Island....make this shit again! and lots of it!

Appears opaque black burnt malt color forms an oozing tan chocolate head leaves fine specks of lacing after the oil like pour. Aroma is primarily charred oak vanilla with dark chocolate whiskey barrel aging is here on multiple levels vinous fruit alcohol almost takes out some un needed nose hairs. Flavor is big almost too big half the bottle is an ample serving size for me the vanilla charred oak tone is great in moderation dark chocolate and espresso coffee with leafy tobacco like edge to it all with fusel alcohol finish it doesn't hide the fact that it's 11% alcohol by volume very well. Mouthfeel has a Chewy texture low carbontion as it warms it's a bit cloying on the palate. Drinkabiliy is limited for me, it challenges the senses but sessionability is key sometimes if looking for an extreme barrel aged creation you have found a full flavored one.

Pours jet black with a reddish brown head that sits atop a mohagany tinted brew. This head is thick but goes away after a little while. Leaves whisps of head along the top as you drink.
Very strong smells of whiskey/bourbon with a oak or smoked or earthy smell.
Intense tastes to say the least. Strong malts and aged in an oak cask leads to the very strong tasting beer that warms your stomach all the way down. Tastes of currants and vanilla along with dark chocolate and coffee. Smooth silky body with a thick oil feel to it all. As far as I could tell the hops were well masked by the malts and bourbon. This one really knocked me over and my tastebuds were ruined for the night. Really impressed with Goose Island on this one and I might as well have followed this up with a snifter of bourbon.

Got the Bourbon County Stout at the Pit Stop in Nelsonville, OH.

Pours a very dark brown (almost black) with a 1/4" head. Just from pouring it out, it seemed very thick.

Smell: strong; coffee beans, alcohol, whiskey

Taste: Bam! this is strong, extremely flavorful; a typical stout flavor with some whiskey flavor; not as strong of an alcohol presence as you'd expect with an 11% beer (I don't want that strong alcohol flavor)

Mouthfeel: thick, but good

Drinkability: need to sip this

Overall, a great tasting beer to sit down and enjoy.

Served from a 12oz. bottle in a big brandy snifter at cellar temperature. Shared with BAs Ego and Yelterdow.

Bottled on date: 08-16-2005.

A - Watery, but thick. Dark as espresso with a deep cocoa head. Faint raspberry crimson highlights. Froths up very nicely with some swirling, replenishing the head. Lacing isn't all too great; spotty at best.

S - Oaky bourbon, vanilla and dark chocolate. Notes of black licorice and acacia. Dark molasses malt, dry and dark sweet bread. Fantastic.

T - Mild up front with burnt caramel -- much like the top of a Creme Brulee. Mocha. The middle brings a brown sugar sweetness. The finish is drying with a hint of hops. The aftertaste is buttery, with big bourbon notes (Think hot-buttered Maker's Mark). Strangely enough, the big bourbon only makes its entrance after the swallow. Given the big alcohol, the afterglow is very comfortably warming.

M - Slight, very subtle carbonation. Mouthfeel is viscous and full of presence. Slick, quick, and coating finish. Nice.

D - Easy and amazingly smooth given the ABV. Enjoy this one as an excellent after dinner drink. Savor it... and take your time. This one is worthy of your full attention.

Inky, thick pour produced a thin chocolatey head. It settled quickly to a ring, but remained throughout and left fine, spotty lacing. Wow, what an aroma! The first thing I thought of was a really earthy, leathery, dark red wine, but then the vanilla, oak, and alcohol hit me. Definitely whisky. There's a rich roasted quality as well, but this is overpowered by everything else. Malty and sweet with a fair bit of chocolate starts things off on the first sip, followed by massive whisky/alcohol and vanilla in the middle. It mellows out again at the end, with chocolate and roast coming forward again, and it finishes with lingering alcohol warmth. Low carbonation and quite creamy. Full bodied, almost heavy, but not cloying at all. Alcohol is a bit aggressive, but appropriate. This is a "take no prisoners" kind of beer, really big and not apologetic about it. Fabulous. Thanks to Ego for procuring this fat ass beer, one that is to be approached with caution.

Served in a tasting tulip at cellar temperature, amongst BAs Epseja and Ego after dinner.

Appearance- Watery, yet thick, almost black. The tan head breaks apart rather quickly, leaving just a rim after a few minutes.

Smell- Booze soaked chocolate. Oak barrels. Alcohol. Fudge brownies. Totally unique and full, this one I will remember for a long time.

Taste- Black licorice soaked in alcohol, heavy and syrupy. Burnt and intensely malty, with a dry, bittering finish that evaporates whatever saliva is left in your mouth.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Thick and buttery, real heavy in the mouth. This is a savoring beer, in all aspects of the word... it packs a pretty good punch. Save it for a quiet evening, and don't be too surprised if you're asleep halfway through the beer.
