This is the beer that started my obsession with barrel aged brews in 2010. I just finished my first of my many four packs of the 2012 vintage. The local stores really benefited from the beefed up distribution. Amazingly its still on the shelves in Iowa! Now to the review that was compiled from 4 separate occasions. This is the best celebration beer known to man! all were bottled on 11/09/12 and poured into a snifter

A: I think its been said a time or two before. JET BLACK. This is a black hole in a glass. No light in or out of this puppy. I haven't tested it but would imagine its more viscous then used motor oil. Two of the four vigorous pours yielded a nice inch thick head, the other two minimal head.

S: Heavenly. Divine. Just inhaling the beer as it warmed in the glass prior to being consumed was almost intoxicating in and of itself. The bourbon cuts through a sublime blend of dark fruits and caramelized sugar, chocolate ,vanilla, and charred oak

T: I would dare to say this is the most complex beer that has graced my palate. So much going on. I absolutely love how the bourbon is prominent but not overpowering. The first of many tastes to tickle the tongue is the sweet dark fruit and caramelized sugar followed quickly by chocolate, vanilla, charred oak from the bourbon barrel and finally the bourbon reigns supreme on the on the finish while still allowing the previous flavors to linger only as if to pay homage to the king, bourbon. You can definitely feel the warmth from the 15% abv as it travels through your system. We had a blizzard and lost power for 8 hours at night in December and I swear the warming power of this beer kept me warmer than any blanket did. As this beer warms to room temperature the flavors intensify and become even more complex. the quickest i have drank this beer was just under an hour. Savor every sip.

M: This definitely coats the entire mouth. The swallow is the party and the lingering mouth feel is like the after party, it just keeps going. It almost resembled smoking a fine cigar, waking up the next morning and still being able to taste it and enjoy it! If there were an area for improvement for this beer i would maybe like just a little less coating but absolutely no complaints here! I think the think mouth feel adds to the necessity to drink this beer slowly, if you take another sip too soon, it still feels like you haven't finished the previous swallow.

O: Perfect. This IS the best beer that I have ever tasted. the most drinkable fresh from the 3 vintages i have had, 2010, 2011 and 2012. I am very excited to see how it ages and I enough to cellar to really see how well time will treat this. I still have 6 bottles of the elusive 2011 as well. This beer is not for the faint of heart! The holy grail of beers. I would actually argue that is this too good to be considered a beer and should just a category all on its own.

disclaimer: my wife does not like the taste of beer. She's a girly girl. After I taste a really good beer, she will have a sip of mine and almost without fail her response is an unimpressed, "tastes like beer". but my zeal for this beer has been passed on to her. After her first sip, she loved it and asked for her own glass. Talk about falling in love all over again!! she has shared this with me on 2 of the occasions and is excited to share this me with on many more. BCBS, you reign supreme. You might just have the honor of having my 2nd born child named after you...just kidding. that'd be silly. But seriously BCBS is AMAZING! Find it, Savor it. Repeat.
