My 100th Review

Picked up a 4-pack of the 2009 edition the other day. Bottled on date: 11/12/09

A dark mahogany brown comes pouring out the bottle, filling the glass with a nice opaque black body. A very minimal dark tan, almost brown head quickly makes an appearance but quickly dissipates.

Aroma is heavy on the bourbon, and light on the rest. Similar to sniffing a glass bourbon, but without a strong alcohol presence and a bit sweeter with hints of vanilla.

Following a strong aroma, I fully expected this beer, at 11 months old, to sill be too hot with bourbon/alcohol flavors. However, while the bourbon is certainly the most up-front flavor, there is a lot of room for other flavors to show off as you explore. At first it literally taste like a shot of bourbon was dropped in the glass but the strong flavor doesn't stick around too long. A slight roasted barley flavor can be detected as well as a woody vanilla flavor that would be hard to detect in most bourbons. It finishes with a slightly bitter kick, but it is not by any means hoppy.

Mouthfeel is actually lighter than expected for a 13% abv beer, but it still packs a punch. As the beer warms, so does the power of the alcohol and you feel it.

Overall, this is a great stout, but at 11 months old, I don't think its reached its peak. I'll let at least 2 bottles from this batch sit a while longer, because I have a feeling that the background flavors will only show-off more with time.

Served from bottle into Teku glass.

A - very dark, with a small amount of tan head that lingers arouns the glass

S - Mostly bourbon in the nose with a little bit of dark roasted malts and a little sweetness as well.

T - Lots of bourbon up front backed by good roasty flavors, coffee, chocolatte etc. Decent amount of alcohol burn, but with all the bourbon flavor this doesn't really seem like a bad thing.

M - thick and smooth mouthfeel, with a good amount of carbonation

O - Fantastic beer, really enjoyed this one, and at 15% enjoyed it slowly.

What's that thing called? Cloud 9? Well this bad boi just put Raul on cloud 11. I mean, Raul is feeling this thing like the "massage" that he just got down at the local parlor. Blacker than sin and as dangerous as a 2x4 with a nail in it, Raul was more into this thang than that one time your mama got bubble gum stick in her hair.

Sleek, sexy, and luxurious. This lil sucker is nothing but luxurious.
