One of the best spots in Bamberg. The walk up to the location is long and steep, but worth the effort. The beer is excellent (note that it varies) and tastes better AFTER the climb up! It is shady and very pleasant. The food is basic but excellent! Recommended!

This very pleasant beer garden is worth the effort of the steep climb up the Oberer Stephansberg!

We had intended going to the Spezial Beer Garden, but missed the sign and turn into Sternwart Str just after passing the Church and small square. So, continuing the steep climb to the top, you can't miss the Wilde Rose Kellar on the left past a building with their sign. We arrived just before it opens at 3pm, and being a bit confused as to how we had missed Spezial, we asked the locals, who told us not to worry, as they considered the beer to be better at Wilde Rose! Had we decided not to stay, it meant a walk back down, and then up again the other side, so in the hot sun we decided to stay put!

A large beer garden under trees with plenty of shade, probably over a hundred tables spread about. A large building houses a food servery, then three beer self service beer counters, two for the Keller Beer, and one for the Weiss beers. Deposit on glass/jug/Mass at time of purchasing beer from any counter, but refunded on return. Beer price the usual - same as within Bamberg bars. The Keller beer was very tasty and we enjoyed it a lot, also the Weiss beer well up to standard. We spoke to a few other locals while there, and they all said we had made the right choice in staying put at Wilde Rose! Now, I cannot really comment, because we never made it to the Spezial Keller - though as I am not so keen on Smoked beers - it probably was the best decision! Though I did miss being able to see the view of Bamberg from Spezial Keller...maybe on another visit!

Highly recommended. Food seemed popular here too, though did not try it ourselves.

The Wilde Rose Keller is a located on a hill in the Stephansberg area of Bamberg. It is a pleasant (though steep at times) walk up the hill, a bit easier climb than to Spezial Keller, which is nearby. You pass Mahrs Keller on the way, and this is a nice place to stop on the way back down. Don't be fooled by the building marked Wilde Rose and the old stairs on your left as you walk up the hill from the Altstadt; this is not the real entrance to the keller (beer garden). It was about a 40 minute walk (at a slow, leisurely pace) from the Bamberg Tourist Center, crossing the river and walking past Klosterbräu. The walk down is faster.

Once inside the keller (beer garden), you find a very pleasant, heavily treed area with sand and gravel on the ground and many picnic tables with chairs. This place must seat hundreds. The building with the beer and food is on your right as you enter. To your left is another building with a stage where bands play. There is also a play area for kids. This is a relaxing keller in a wooded setting, and though it is high on the Stephansberg hill, there is no real view to speak of.

On my visit they had Wilde Rose Kellerbier and a Weissbier on-tap, and bottled Schlenkerla. The beers on-tap were €2.10 for 0.5L (plus a €3.00 deposit for the mug). I think they have more beers available at some times.

The food was pretty typical Franconian bier keller food: bratwurst, pretzels, whole raddish, and more substantial meals on weekends.

Since it is all outdoors, this place is only open during good weather, and only during the warm months of the year.

Definitely worth a visit.
