Located right along Route One in Waldoboro (25 minutes south of Rockland), Maine is McKean & Charles. Right now the front of the store looks much nice than the file photo here, thanks to some very nice landscaping (flowers, shrubs, etc.)
This store focuses on wine, but has one corner with a good selection of beer. You will see Allagash, Shipyard, Andrews, and others from Maine. Other beers from the U.S., include Smuttynose, North Coast, Thirsty Dog, Lakefront, and others. Some belgians include Saxo, St. Bernardus.... And some other imports too. I was very glad to come across this beer while in Main for a long weekend. Highly recommended if you are looking for beer anywhere close to Waldoboro.

Stopped by to meet Todd, the "beer guy" at McKean & Charles, and fellow beer advocate during our vacation. Was presented with a nice selection of beers--Cantillon, Fantome, Weyerbacher, Dogfish Head, Unibroue, and many New England beers. I live in a rural area of PA where I do not have bottle shops, so it was fascinating to me to be able to walk into a store and just buy bottles and mix sixes. A very nice place to stop by if you are in the Midcoast Maine area, and I highly recommend it to everyone. Todd is doing a great job with the selection.

Need beer in the midcoast? Waldoboro is the palce to go here at McKean and Charles. If you show up on saturday, Todd the beer guy (Buckspin) will guide you along on what he has in the store along with his opinions of the beers. He knows his beers. Selection is awsome, Belgians, local beers, reigonal micros, all arranged for easy viewing. Your hardest part is going to be what to get, you can easily going overboard. Though I didn't take a good look they do ahve a nice cheese counter along with a pretty decent wine selection. I found it a bit pricey, but I may not no better either. If you don't stop here on your next trip to Maine your missing a lot!!

update 2/1/08: i upped the service score as they are the closest place to me that i can order something and have an 100% chance of me getting it. they also seem to have the most interesting selection of anywhere i've been in the state.
i had ordered some beer from this place without having been. knowing the area (which is famous for moody's diner) i was a bit sceptical. however, my fears were proven quite incorrect.
i got my case of hooker old marley (15% for case lots) and a cantillion (i've not seen either hooker nor cantillion anywhere else in maine). then i made a mixed 6 with some long shot and rogue and other sundry tasties (discount off single bottle prices for mixed sixes). there are several shelves of beer and a cooler (2 coolers?). no crap on tap (so to speak). all micros, foriegn and domestic and from maine too. the best selection i've seen north of portland.
full wine store and some liquor and deli items too.
oh! and they are on the north bound side past the irving station when heading north and just before the irving station whenst heading south. i saw a sign before i seen the building.

A great addition to midcoast Maine. All you people heading north to Bar Harbor on Route 1 need to stop here for provisions. Excellent beer selection: plenty of Belgians, a good number of Scottish beers, Germans. Lots of domestic microbrews, from New England and away. Todd the beer guy is knowledgable and helpful, and really likes to talk beer. The store is clean and well-lit, beers are arranged in an easy to find manner. My wife said the wine selection is also quite good (I was just there for the beer). They also have a selection of cheeses.
I felt the prices were reasonable, compared to what I pay in southern Maine. Will stop in whenever I'm in the area.
