This place is a welcome addition to a pathetic Jersey Shore beer scene. Bar is on a busy main street in downtown Asbury Park. Area is clean and safe (though I would not venture to far- if you do follow the rule of not parking if there is broken auto glass in the street). You need a masters degree in parking meters to figure out how to use the ones in the area. The area and the bar seem to be recently renovated, but there were still enough locals to retain areas "atmosphere". Inside the bar is your typical inner city renovated drinking space (brick walls, hard wood floor and chalk boards). Bartenders were helpful (living in Vermont I know how to deal with the urban slacker/ wierdo/ biker combo), though the place was empty. They had Lost Abbey, Blue Point, Keegans on tap. Priced slighty high, but fine. Lines were clean. Would return.

I'm pretty sure this is my first review since joining in 2006, so that should mean something in and of itself. New to the area from Pittsburgh, had a couple of awesome beers (Kentucky breakfast and a Piraat- both draft. The Piraat tasted better than I'd ever had.) Both bartenders were awesome, great music and chill atmosphere. To top it all off, one of the bartenders, Bridget, tipped ME a heady topper. Even after I insisted that she should keep all 4. Top notch. Thanks Bridget, I'll be back to the Brickwall often.

Stopped in here recently before seeing King's X at the Stone Pony, as it seemed like the best bar in the vicinity of said venue, and it's within easy walking distance. It's a pretty nice place, simple, tidy. Casual layout, with generic beer slogans lining the walls, and plenty of TV screens; not a huge place, but they use the space well. There's a bit of a rowdy (douchey), college-kid / broseph vibe going on, but that's not really the fault of the bar as much as it is of the clientele. But it's Asbury Park, so take that as you will. When I visited it was pretty busy and noisy, but our party of three still managed to snag bar seats after a few minutes.
The service was fine. Busy as it was, our bartender never left us waiting. She also seemed fairly in tune with the beer scene and was able to offer suggestions to my not-so-beer-savvy friend before I could chime in with my opinion.
As far as beer goes, they had a nice, diverse selection displayed, with such items as Lunch and KBS in the cellar. However, they seemed to really have a problem with updating their beer lists. The chalkboard over the bar didn't match the lists at the seats, and even the paper lists weren't up to date, so I had to come up with backup plans for pretty much every beer I ordered. The plus side to that is that it seems like they turn around kegs pretty quick, so at least you know you're getting fresh beer...even if it's not the one you originally wanted. I think these guys would really benefit from a digital taplist, or if they don't want to make that investment, they really need to get on the ball with keeping their lists updated.
Food is basically pub grub. Nothing out of the ordinary, but all pretty good. I had the pulled pork, which was really nothing to write home about, but it was decent. Prices were generally reasonable on food and beer.
Overall, I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to revisit this place, but if I ever find myself going to a show in Asbury Park (it happens rarely, but it does happen), I'd have no problem going back.

Beer selection is GREAT. Food is GREAT. There are wide-screen tvs at just about every angle viewable from most of the tables; but the volume isn't so high as to disturb. Table wait-staff are, for the most part, GREAT. Unfortunately, one of the "hostesses" is a bit of a disinterested bee-yotch who seems to think she's doing you a favor by paying ANY attention to you whatsoever. I have resisted kvetching about her for a couple of months now; but last time I dropped-in for dinner and a beer, I thought to myself, "no, she's not just having a bad night - she really is a [insert your favorite 4-letter word]." What ever. I still like this place a lot. Just wish daddy-owner (I'm guessing) would encourage Junior-ette to find a job truly worthy of her elevated social status and give the rest of us a break...
I still heartily recommend this place. The hideous-skinny-jeans-ludicrously-full-of-myself-hipster factor is also surprisingly manageable for downtown AP...

There's something about this place that beckons me back again and again. It might be the eclectic crowd it draws, it might be the engaging bar tenders, or maybe it's the beer.
The bar wait staff is great. If they have the time to talk they will. They are knowledgeable about beer and have no problem letting you try a sip or three of an unknown beer. Three bartenders that come to mind are John, Alicia, and Kelly.
Their beer list changes often so you never know what to expect. On a recent visit they had Founder's Breakfast Stout (makes Guinness taste like club soda), Stone Double Bastard, Flying Dog Double IPA, Sierra Nevada Oliva quad, a mead, and you get the idea. They often pour Chimay too. They even had Dogfishhead Fort 18% ABV. Wow!
My only complaint is $10 for some of their offerings are steep. Yes, I know the malt quantity of high gravity beer and the ridiculous amounts of hops they use are expensive but on a trip last week to "The Ginger Man" in Manhattan these same beers were $8-$9. I don't imagine Cookman Avenue rent is worst than midtown Manhattan.
The food is pretty good. Chili, burgers, ribs all good. Occasionally the food comes out less than hot but decent stuff overall. Definitely worth checking out.

Sunday afternoon, a little dead, the service was almost non existant, having said that, this is a great addition to the Jersey Shore for those that prefer something other than Bud lite.
I started with a Terrapin Rye Ale, my wife had a Dogfish Aprihop as did our friend after strangely being sold on a Lagunits Pils when she was asking about a Palm Belgian?
Later I had a stone IPA and my wife had a Chimay. All the beer was served fresh and tasted excellent, the food was also really good but at the end of the day the service was so ambivalent I don't really feel like making the 2 mile trip from Belmar that often.

This place keeps getting better every time I visit. The food is great, The "house" beers are great and I always leave happy. I stopped in on a Friday night and it was busy but the service didnt lack. Our waitress definatly knew what she was talking about when it came to beer. The house beers consist of your standards Bud,Miller etc along with Abita, Palm, Stone IPA and Troegs Hopback. They also feature a few guest taps of some really good beers. Golden Monkey, Single Chair, Hairy Eyeball and a few others were on tap this weekend. The word is the manager is a beer guy himself and wants the place to be known not only for its food but the beers they serve as well.

Never Sober must have been just that when he wrote that post. I have been a frequent costumer of BRICKWALL since they opened over 3 years ago. I have never experienced a vibe anything close to racial, sweaty, seedy or any other descriptive words Never Sober thought of. In all my visits, I have felt welcome, comfortable and well attended to.
I will be the first to admit that their beer selections were not always on point. But there has been a recent change of the General Manager and he is making huge strides with the beer selection. I think he does something like: 8 constantly changing taps and 7 residents. The residents are typical with some nice highlights (Stone IPA, Palm and Purple Haze are always available). But the rotating taps are where it's at! This guy knows how to pick beer. In the last month I've seen Weyerbacher brews, lots from Troegs and Blue Point, some awesome Boulder beers and lots more. I've even heard they are doing a Flying Dog Beer Dinner in Febuary.
The new GM told me himself that he was knows exactly why some true hopheads felt the BRICKWALLs claim to be a beer bar was questionable. "I dont care what you say, Blue Moon and Sam Adams Winter doesn't make you a beer bar. I want hops. Lots of bitter hops. Barley wines, doubles, triples! Even quads!!" If this guys keeps it up, BRICKWALL is about to become the best beer bar on the Jersey Shore! Welcome to town sir!

On vacation in Asbury Park with my girlfriend (who's not a big beer drinker) we were looking for someplace both of us would enjoy, and a local friend suggested we check out the places on Cookman Ave. yielding the best selection on a Friday night.
Upon walking up the Brickwall Tavern had a welcoming feel to it, so we entered what we later figured out was the back door, found the host stand, and asked to sit at the bar (realizing that asking to be seated at the bar is a bit stupid, and would probably result in being sat at high-tops in the bar area - HINT) where there was plenty of seating.
We were greeted right away, and asked for menus. The other reviews are accurate; this place has a large beer list, but mostly macros and imports. I wouldn't say that the focus ISN'T on beer, but it certainly isn't on CRAFT beer. Not a big deal for me at the time because I was just looking for Yuengling (being from MA where you can't get it), which they have on draught. (Plus, Irish Car Bombs!) If I lived in the area I would have liked to see more American Craft selections, either in bottle or on draught.
The food selection is good; salads, steaks, burgers (Sloppy Joe!), etc., and an array of sides. Overall the service was fast and friendly, although one bartender did seem to dislike me right from the start, but I often get that (and I was with a beautiful girl, I wouldn't have liked me either...), and he was the exception.
While waiting for food we looked around the place and enjoyed their decor. They have clever little slogans scattered about the walls and columns. They also seem to have a separate area in the back with a separate bar for private functions. Three large flatscreen TVs behind the bar also provide something interesting to look at...
The food came out relatively quickly, was delicious, and was priced reasonably. Of the 4 nights we stayed in Asbury Park we were at the Brickwall Tavern for three of them, and would return the next time we vacation there. Don't go here if you're looking to discover a new and different beer, but it's great of you want a reliably familiar beer to complement your dinner.

Okay, after reading NeverSober's review of this place I almost skipped it. But, I also guessed that his experience had to be a fluke and it just happened to be a bad night/time.
I was in the area for business and wanted someplace to go by myself where I could sit at the bar, have a couple pints and something small to eat. I walked in around 8:30 on a Monday night and it was pleasantly busy but mostly with bar customers. I got a seat at the bar and was greeted with great service and a very nice bartender.
They have a decent selection of beer on tap, but most are along the lines of macros or huge imports like Newcastle and Smithwicks. The two notable beers on were Stone IPA (as others have mentioned) and Chimay Triple. They also had a few good choices in bottles. Not a horrible selection by any means, but beer is definitely not the focus.
I got the vegetarian spring rolls off the specials menu and they were good. Nothing fancy, but solid. The rest of the food I saw looked good - I just wasn't hungry at the time.
Overall I had a good time. Nice mix of locals and tourists with people dressed in business clothes and others in beach wear. Since I'm in the are all week I'll go back again. I think that sums it up.
