I visited this establishment on a couple of occasions over a recent weekend (March 07). Overall this is a very nice place. It has a nice vibe to it, I felt comfortable as soon as I walked in. Plenty of artwork on the walls (probably for sale), the bar is in front of you and to the right as you walk in. Nicely decorated for a modern redecorating of an older building. There is also a small room behind the bar to the right seating about 8 - 10 persons.
Only one cask ale; it was Hilden's Molly Malone when I visited. Some unusual taps including Bitburger, Erdinger and Erdinger dunkle. A reasonable bottled selection also.
Staff were very attentive and efficient. There was an excellent jazz session there on the Friday night.
I have just noticed on the receipts, it says; "Fate Awards 2007, Best Gastro Pub, Thank you for voting". So now!

Overpriced. Decent live music from eleven on. Selection is decent overall but poor for draughts. Bottled selection is not very important for me in a pub; if I want bottled beer I'll go to an off-license.
I never tried their food.
The craic was good enough. It's cosy, but not quite crowded. You may spill your drink trying to get to your table (if you're lucky enough to find one).
The location is actually quite poor; it's kind of in a dodgy part of Belfast. <insert obligatory carbomb joke here if you must>.
I'd go back if they rotate their draughts out more.

Probably my favorite pub in Belfast. Not that I am by any means an expert on Belfast pubs.
Went in here for a late lunch in October of 2007 (found some ancient tasting notes). I had one of the Erdingers that are offered on tap. There was some sort of soup special for lunch, and it was actually quite good. Very relaxed sort of place. Newspapers about if one wished to read, and some people were in there reading.
I would rate this as a must visit for any BA in Belfast looking for a proper pub. There are so many themed bars in Belfast that you really can find anything that you are looking for. This is just a great pub.

Visited Belfast as part of my Honeymoon trip to the Republic and Northern Ireland this past Summer. Tried to visit the Crown but it was closed for renovations. Based on some BA reviews we visited the John Hewitt and had a very nice time. They had a decent selection on Draft including Erdinger ( Hefe and Dunkel,) Hoegarten The pub had a nice old world feel to it and was quite relaxing. The Band was also very good playing a few nice Jazz sets. I cannot comment on Food because we didn't have any but it sure looked good.

This is an interesting little bar located on the Donegal Road just off Royal Avenue then past North Street
The pub is fairly new but is designed in an old pub style with modern influences. There is varied modern artwork on the walls which vary from time to time, lots of newspaper articles and other interesting things
The pub has a variety of stuff on tap, apart from the big macros they have; erdinger hefe, erdinger dark, hoegaarden, bitburger, kostritzer and a few others.
They have one rotating guest ale which is usually well selected, alot of the time its local but the last time I was there they had St.Peters Mild which was great
The bottled selection is modest but acceptable, kostritzer, innis and gunn, belfast ale, franziskaner and some others
This is one of my favourite bars in Belfast, the range is modest but what they do have is great and the atmosphere is always upbeat and jovial
