Pours a deep reddih tintes brown with minimal khaki colored head. Scent is of sweet carmel with an earthy and grainy quality. Taste is a little more balanced with sweet carmel balancing with and earthy and spicey quality and touches of fruits like currants and raisin. Medium bodied, smooth and a touch undercarbonated. A nice dunkel that falls short of the more known brands from bavaria.

Had this on-tap recently at the brewpub. I have to say it was a heck of a beer and certainly more complex than the Spaten Dunkel I recently tried. This one still bases the malt flavor on a dark bread crust taste, but also has mild chocolate, dark fruit and coffee grounds notes that mingle and make a more interesting. Interesting? Yes, and it tastes pretty damn good too. Check this out.

Pours a fairly dark brown, with a thick, tan head similar to the other beers I had. Head receded fairly quickly but never left completely, a decent amount of lacing but nothing special.

The aroma is slightly sweet, roasted, and earthy, a pleasant mix.

Flavor is initally sweet and nutty, followed by a slight bitter character from roasted malt, with hints of caramel and coffee. Fairly abrupt, crisp finish which was a little unexpected. Not very complex, a straight-forward, simple lager, which felt pretty accurate to the dunkels I've had in Germany.

Body is about the same as the kellerbier, somewhere between light and medium, smooth.

A pretty solid beer, although I get the feeling with its crisp, quick finish its more directed at the macro-drinking crowd to try and bring them along into other beer styles. It just feels like its a little lacking in the finish, but with slight tweaking could be a very good brew. It is, however, easy to drink and light on the alcohol, and would make a good session beer.

It pours a muddy brown with frosted tips of dark amber. A finger of light tan head slips away and leaves little on the surface. Lacing is, hence, spare and minuscule.

The aroma is rich with roasted malt, hinting at sweetness, and rife with caramel, toffee, and a underlying mix of coffee and nuts. An earthy quality smoothed the ground and enriched the whole.

Upon tasting, the malt was fairly sweet and nutty, as well as twisted with toffee, mocha, and a basic earthiness, but it is all thinner here than in the aroma. A biscuit touch comes through late, just before a truncated finish places a slightly crisp coda on the experience. It's spot-on for the style, it seems, but without a whole lot of depth or character.

Between light and medium bodied, the grain bills develops a somewhat slick coating, but it drops away pretty much like the flavor.

There's nothing here not to enjoy, but it's a bit too fleeting to really be grasped and savored. As an accompaniment for food, it seemed to pair well with beef, as the earthiness was a willing partner to the meat, but on its own I'm not sure I would seek this out. As part of a sampler, it goes down, sure, but I wouldn't pick this out for a full-sized portion. So it goes, there's plenty of other beers on tap, right?
