This thick and heavy looking brew came to me in a fine tulip glass. It had a tall head, beige and lingered until the end. It's garnet brown color made a striking contrast.
In the nose I find dark fruits such as figs and raisins. Some spices also. Smells sweet too with a hint of alcohol.
Drinks with some essence of cheeries and berries. Candied sugar weaves it's way through the beer. Malty sweetness. I think I taste some oak high lights I don't know.
Flows heavy across the palate with a smooth sweetness. hints of alcohol peek through too.
A well made beer thats easy to drink

I had the 2009 at Torst.
This comes in a rich dark brown, black color with a small head.
There is a big bready plum aroma. It's somewhat mellow without big booze and of dark fruits.
The flavor is similar to the aroma. It has a clean finish with this wonderful fresh pop despite being barrel aged. There's burnt caramel and sugar flavor. It has some prot wine characteristics. It really is one of the best quads I've had.
The mouthfeel is what I love because it has such a creamy smooth character.

2008 Vintage on-tap at Max's Belgian Beer Fest. Tried directly after the 2005 Grand Reserva.
It looks the same as the Grand Reserva, but with a better head. The smell is much less roasty and lacks some of the mellowed characteristics I loved on the 05 GR. Very Belgian, sweet, sugary, malty. Moving to the taste, this is balanced and light, the taste is more focused on dark fruits, candied sugar, and Belgian yeasts. While it is balanced, it might need some age. Slight harsh boozy finish, medium body low carbonation. Pretty damn drinkable. This was very good, should have had it before the Grand Reserva. it's just not as good.

De Struise seems to make so many pannepot beers these days, it's hard to keep track of them all. The 2008 draft version of this beer was available at Max's during their recent Belgian event.
The beer pours a fairly dark brown color with red highlights. Head retention is quite good in this beer, and there is considerable sticky lacking all around. The nose is surprisingly faint and mute, though I did get some light vanilla and chocolate, as well as a hint of cherry. On the palate, this beer is just delicious, with chocolate, vanilla, cherry and light coffee all combining to make for a very fine tasting beer. This moderately sweet beer is smooth, rich and long on the palate, with no more than a hint of alcoholic heat in the finish. The beer finishes well, and frankly this beer is all too easy to drink. My glass was gone before I realized it.
Another excellent pannepot beer from De Struise. What a surprise.
From 5/12/12. The 2009 is on tap at Max's today. It's every bit as good... consitent high quality from this excellent brewer.

I had this on tap at Churchkey.
A: Dark, dark brown, with a bit of translucence mixed with some leatheriness that made it difficult to totally see through, but not impossible. There were a few bubbles posing as a head, but nothing fancy.
S: Strong, buttery smell of oak killed the Belgian quality making the score barrel-aging - 10, Belgian funk - 2.
T: I would best describe this as delectable bourbon infused date juice, with brown sugar. Additionally, the finish was about the smoothest one I've experienced this side of the Milky Way galaxy.
M: Not a trace of booze or undesirable bitterness. It was absolutely remarkable how easily this one goes down considering its high octane. The was virtually no lacing on the glass OR the palate.
O: I'd been wanting to try this one for a while and it definitely didn't disappoint. I'm usually not a big fan of Quads, but this was no Quad, this was candy!

Pannepot Reserva pours a dark brown color with a thin cocoa head in my snifter glass. Good lacing on this beer. The nose is oak, bourbon, vanilla, and dark fruit- really nice. The taste is the same as the nose, with a little coffee added in. The feel is out of this world. SUPER smooth, velvety and amazing. I've never had a big beer that goes down this easily, and is this amazing feel wise. Overall- Highly recommended you try this if you have a chance..

dark dark brown (almost black) with a tan head. nose is dark fruit (mainly plum to me), spice, caramel, and charred wood. lots of layers, but humble at the same time. taste follows suit with some added vanilla and grain tastes, and i find almost a smoky hint in the end... and chocolate? pretty sweet, but not cloying. almost full body with a rustic kind of feel. very very good.

Look: pours hazy dark caramel brown color with a small light brown head.
Smell: Plums, yeast, candy sugar, cloves, pepper, oak and alcohol
Taste: Full of dark fruits, candy sugar, but also spicy (pepper, clove), vanilla and a bit alcohol hop bitterness in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation and medium creamy body
Overall: Great beer, one of the best in the style

Poured into a small pint glass. Pours a dark murky brown with just a thin head that settles almost immediately.
Big malty profile with a bit of a grape aroma. Caramel in he aroma with figs and raisins. Smells tannic and a little sweet. The taste is very malty and fruity. Lots of raisin ms fig flavor with a bit of caramel sweetness. Hints of cocoa linger in the background.
Good feel to this. Full body with soft carbonation.Overall a nice quad. I'd love to have this more available.

It's been awhile since I had this at Novare Res on-tap, but I've finally gotten around to transferring over this review from my limited notes.
12oz pour
Pours a nice deep amber with a smallish tan head, no cap, hardly any lacing.
Smell is mostly malty with hints of spice, caramel, not picking up much of a wood characteristic though.
Taste is spicy with a caramel malt backing, lightly woody oak presence, alcohol is well hidden with only a slight burn on the tongue but no real heat to speak of, creamy mouthfeel with a nice crisp carbonation.
I think I prefer this version over the regular, shame it's much harder to find.

Reviewed from my notes. Served in my Uprising Chalice at Novare Res, NYE 2010.
A: Dark brown liquid with a soapy brown skim of foam on top. Opaque. I was expecting a more impressive head; honestly, I'm a little disappointed.
S: Nutty, spiced aroma. A touch of sweetness.
T: Plums and prunes. Crystal sugar. Some alcohol and a touch of black cherries. Seltzer at the finish.
M: This is a tad syrupy. It leaves a flavorful coat. The carbonation tingles.
D: This is pretty drinkable, but I expected more out of this beer. In the future, I will stick with the regular Pannepot, or spring for a Grand Reserva, both of which I enjoyed more than this version.

On tap at Novare Res. 16oz pour served in my chalice. Not sure of the year on this one
A: Dark crimson hue. Just a whisp of white colored head. No lacing
S: Some crisp apple, cherry, caramel, molasses and a touch of oak
T: Slightly oaky. Notes of sherry. Some light fruit (apple/cherry), molasses. Kinda hard to lock down all the flavors in this
M: Full bodied. Very smooth. Some carbonation, don't really notice it though
D: Very complex quad. Zero sign of alcohol. As I said, hard to get all flavors because there were so many. Was very excited to see this on tap

Served in a snifter at The Firkin.
2008 vintage. Nice to see more random goodness flowing at the Firk. This one pours a nice obsidian topped by a finger of tan foam. The nose comprises figs, brown sugar, light molasses, light black cherry, red apples, and some very light roasted malts. The taste holds notes roasted malts, light-ish molasses, brown sugar, figs, red apple, red grapes, chocolate, and some very light coffee. The body is a slightly hefty medium, with a light carbonation and a very smooth feel. Overall, a very nice quad that ends up being dangerously drinkable.

On tap at Pizzeria Paradiso.
Pours a very dark brown color, not quite black, with little to no light going thru the glass. Head is very silky and thin and has a beige color. No lacing on this one, after about 5 minutes it looks like a glass of wine.
Aroma could be a little stronger and I get lots of dark fruit, raisins, yeasty esters and a port-wine/alcohol note in the end.
This beer tastes very good. Lots of dark fruit (plums, figs, raisings) upfront with a honey-like sweetness throughout. Towards the end of the sip I can definitely get some oak character along with a hint of noble hops. The aftertaste is very rich and yeasty with some alcohol warmth and red grape astrigency.
Body is medium to high and carbonation is on the lower side making this beer incredibly smooth. I find it hard to believe that it is 10% abv.
Very pleasant on the palate and highly drinkable, this is what Belgian beer is all about.

From 09/25/10 notes. Had on tap at Churchkey in Washington, DC. 2008 Vintage - aged 14 months in French oak barrels.
a - Pours a murky mahogany color with one inch of white head and light carbonation.
s - Smells of oak, spices, dark fruit, sour cherry, and caramel malts. Smells great.
t - Tastes of dark fruit, sour fruit, caramel malts, spices. A step down from the nose but still good.
m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation; quite easy to drink.
d - I thought this was a great quad; the nose on it was great. Would love to try this one again.

The Struise Brouwers were at the Borefts festival in Bodegraven, the Netherlands with a lot of super beers. In De Molen, a fine dutch brewery, were a lot of good breweries but the best brewer was The Struise.
Poured in my the Molen tasting glass this beer looks absolutely perfect. This is one of the best quads when you don't like the oaktaste.
Typical aroma of a banana, licorice and vanilla mix. Sweet spicey complex flavour.
Loved every sip of it. I asked Urbain when he is going to brew this pannepeut again because i need a crate of this beer!! I will have to wait a while.

2008 vintage on-tap at Ebenezer's. Cellphone notes. (Also had a 2008 bottle at a tasting later on, changed some things.)
Pours dark brown with a small off-white head. Eventually turns to a thick ring and leaves a bit of lacing.
Much like the smell of the regular Pannepot but less intense. (Chocolate, dark fruits, leather.)
Taste is still excellent, a bit more complexity I think. Chocolate, brown sugar, toast, licorice, biscuit malt, spice, leather, dark fruits and a bit of hops. Absolutely no alcohol bite. Mouthfeel is good but would definitely improve with age.
I love the regular Pannepot and this was close I'd say, but it would only get better over time. The oak adds another level of flavors and smooths things out a bit. Didn't mess with the formula too much unlike Pannepot Wild which I wasn't a fan of.

330 ml bottle into chalice, 2009 vintage. Pours murky dark reddish brown color with a small khaki head with decent retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Minimal glass lacing with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, prune, fig, molasses, toast, clove, pepper, oak, light roast, brown bread, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and fruity/spicy notes with moderate oak presence. Taste of raisin, prune, fig, molasses, toast, toffee, clove, pepper, oak, brown bread, light roast, and toasted earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, molasses, toast, toffee, oak, clove, pepper, brown bread, light roast, and earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of malt and fruity/spicy flavors; with moderate oak presence and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic oak aged quadrupel. Big complexity and great balance of flavors; and quite smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

2010 Vintage. Consumed May 19, 2013
A: Pours a very deep red, almost black/brown color with a fingers worth of tan head
S: Booze soaked fruits, spices, Belgian yeast, light oak, phenolic notes, and light alcohol all come through nicely
T: Follows the nose. Nicely complex right off the bat. Starts with the spices and dark fruits and moves into a light oakiness, phenolic notes, and warming alcohol. Finishes with lingering spices and oak
M: Medium-full bodied with low-moderate carbonation
O: A very good oak-aged quad. Regular Pannepot is solid, and the oak rounds out some of the harshness that it can have. It could also be rounded out due to the age itself, but regardless, it is a bit more complex than the regular version which is saying quite a lot. Definitely worthy of a purchase, especially if you can find it for under $10

2009 Vintage
Pours into my FFF Teku dark, brownblack, with a billowing light khaki head.
The nose is bourbon soaked dark fruits - beautifully blended - with a hint of green apple. A bit of spice too. Any oak seems to have faded however. I would have liked the nose to have been stronger, but I imagine that age has subdued it somewhat.
The taste is really subtle and complex. Anything that may have been dominating or overpowering in this brew was quelled by four years in the bottle. Again, bourbon soaked dark fruits. Most of the heat of the bourbon is gone leaving a smooth, slightly woody bourbon sweetness. There's a tannic, slightly sour (in a good way) quality that manifests near the finish.
The mouthfeel is super smooth. This brew goes down dangerously easy. There is a nice pleasant warmth in my chest and a bit of burn at the back of my throat.
What a wonderful brew and simply a pleasure to drink. Easily the best bourbon flavors I've tasted in a brew. However, I'd imagine the regular Pannepot has more overt complexity because barrel aging tends to dominate my palate.

Pours a deep dark purple red. Not quite stout in color but definitely Belgian dark ale.
Smells fantastic, plums, raisins, dried fruit and molasses, touch of alcohol smokiness. Belgian yeast is also present.
Tastes of definite dark fruits, black cherry and raisins with fig. Mixed into a vat of oaky chocolate. Some spicy notes from the yeast poke through along with a touch of molasses. Somewhat sweet yet highly balanced with a touch of its abv showing. Still I can't tell its 10%
Mouthfeel is perfect, creamy round and smooth.
Overall, I'm loving this one. Seems age does this 2009 version well. I'm already planning on finding more. A highly recommended try if you like quads and dark ales.

Pours a semi-hazy, dark brown body with a wispy, khaki colored head. As it recedes I get some decent spotty lacing.
Aromas begin with a melange of dark malts and toasted oak wrapped up in a luscious, sweet-smelling raisin/plum syrup. Medium-dark fruit and a light cola like rooty, spiciness.
The tastes begin with toasted brown bread soaked in caramel, tangy plums, golden raisins and an herbal, almost root beer spiciness. As it warms you get a little more of the Belgian esters from the Belgian yeast.
The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with moderate to light carbonation. Finish is dryish and semi-sweet. Finish is farily dry for such a big beer but dont get me wrong there is some candy sweetness here as well.
Overall this is a great Quad from a great brewer. I really need to sample this, the original and the Grand Reserva at the same time because I really can't recall a great difference in flavor but a horizontal tasting will hopefully alleviate that. Probably my favorite (and decently available) brewery of the Quad style.

330 mL bottle poured into a De Struise chalice. 2008 bottle.
Appearance - Deep garnet body that doesn't produce a head until the pour is almost complete. Chunks of sediment start flowing in and suspend themselves in the reddish fluid. The head is fleeting and results in just a lopsided collar of khaki foam.
Smell - Dark fruit dominated aroma. Brown sugar, caramel, all that stuff. Lacking the earthy component of regular Pannepot. Reminds me of Pannepeut.
Taste - Dark fruit flavors abound here as well and build to a slight cola flavor. The oak builds as the fruity sharpness does as well. It culminates in a bite that covers up much of the depth of the malt flavor.
Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation and that bite lingers on the palate. Not sure what to call it. Tannins maybe?
Overall - Well it's Pannepot so it's still a great beer, but I guess I'm just disappointed that the oak seems to have cut out the great flavors instead of augmenting them.

Perfectly dark with a half inch of off white head. Very nice retention and some nice spots of lacing. Aroma is light cocoa and prune. Flavor is a kinda hot with a lot of quad pruney notes with a touch of sherry. The roasty cocoa is a nice counterpoint to the quad character. I don't get a ton of oak, perhaps a touch of vanilla in the aftertaste but not a huge barrel character from the oak. Mid level carbonation with a bit of a bite. Maybe could up the body a bit.
