There are two Jerome breweries that Americans may have come across. One is based in Jerome, Arizona, and I don't know anything more about them at this time. Tell them I'm coming. The other is from Argentina and has an interesting story. Eduardo Maccari once rescued a Czech mountain climber in the Andes of Argentina. In gratitude, the man invited Eduardo to his place in Europe and introduced him to homebrewing. Eduardo then took up a new hobby back in Argentina that turned into a business that ultimately led to this bottle landing in my house in Maryland. This stout is thoroughly unique. It pours exceptionally dark - no light creeps in even around the edges. The smell and flavor combine the expected stoutness, and add complex flavors that, true to form, I could not properly identify. The bottle says "100% malt", but also claims patagonian hops. Hmmm. There was balancing quality and bittering finish, so I suspect hops are part of the mix. This is a solid effort that should fit into the American stout scene easily, but, for me, didn't stand out. It is a very good brew.

22 ounce bottle (labeled Andean Stout). Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch tan head that stayed around for a while. There's also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice and sweet, the brew smells like dark fruit (raisins, prunes), molasses, chocolate, coffee and some charred/burnt malt. The flavors are the same as the aroma, but not quite as strong. I do like the taste, but it does seem a little weak in comparison to the aroma. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a little bit coating with moderate carbonation. Overall it's a decent enough brew, I'd buy it again in the future. It's certainly worth trying for just $3.99 a bottle!

Pours a very thin layer khaki head that fades quickly leaving traces lace. Deep brown almost black color, no highlights. Little carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is malty sweet, flavor is almost sweet malty coffee. $5.99 for a 22oz bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, Ma. Bottle labeled Andean Stout.

Acquired this from a77cj7 via Under 100 Fishing for Minnows BIF so a big THANK YOU goes out to him!

A: This beer pours an opaque black with a one finger of chocolate brown sudsy head that recedes relatively quickly. Head recedes to a film leaving wispy lacing on the glass.

S: Nose is somewhat smoky, dark fruits, charred malts, and bitter chocolate.

T: Taste starts with a sweet molasses flavoring mingled with dark fruits, mainly dates. Some bitter chocolate moves in. Finish has some toffee sweetness mixed with some smokey coffee flavoring.

M: Lighter side of medium body, medium carbonation, thin body, somewhat watery.

D: Goes down easily, somewhat tasty, not too filling, mild kick, ok representation of style. I could enjoy a pint or two, but there are better offerings of the style out there.

A - a not of red at the edges, creamy white head.

S - one I'd the oddest beer smells ever. Very fruity and chocolate undertones. Think of going into a chocolate shop and smelling the.fancy flavored chocolates, but all I'd them together. Plus, someone.walked in with a coffee.

T - Not as good as the smell. Fruity, chocolate, malt... but somethin different in there that I can not pit a finger on.

M - nice coating but zero tingle.

D - different enough to be interesting.

I do say, a fine evening for a stout.

This is black as night in the body, opaque, and a fizzy tan head remains at the top of the beer.

Aromas of raisin, coffee, chocolate, really sublime and multi-layered.

A significantly mild flavor, surprising even, but there is a hint of coffee, vanilla, raisin. A little smokiness from the burnt malt heads in at the end but is barely noticible.

Watery feel for a stout but with just enough body to get you through.

A really mild, deliciious beer that is an amazingly drinkable stout, due to its subtle characteristics.

Sampled in a beer bar in Mendoza, Argentina

A rare treat for South American beers. Difficult topin down on style. Certainly not a MilkStout. A cross between a rauch beer and a Stout for me.

Excellent appearance, very dark, almost jet black with a small head.

Chocolate and coffee aromas predominate, with a strong flavour of alcohol fading away to a long smoky finish.

Would be very enjoyable after a meal.

Thanks to my boy Sid for sharing!

Pours a deep black, a touch of brown in the edges, very thick and chunky tan head forms, slowly settles down to a thick layer and ring, lots of lacing sticks to the glass.

Smell is nice, Belgian in character, lots of dark fruit and lightly sugary, some honey, chocolate wafers, biscuit, raisin, nice roastiness, lightly yeasty, a bit of alcohol, a bit spicy, quite nice.

Taste is similar, very sweet and fruity up front, raisin, caramel, candi sugar, light chocolate and roast, well integrated, some spiciness, a bit of yeast, biscuit/wafer, dry cocoa powder, balanced in the finish.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with pretty high carbonation. Works within a Belgian stout style though, quite nice. Thanks Sid!

Appearance: dark brown in color, minimal head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: clove, light sugar, and roasted malt

Taste: roasted malt, sugar, clove, charred wood, spices, and a touch of chocolate at the end

Mouthfeel: sweet with spices, medium/light bodied and carbonation

Drinkability: Super drinkable. A year round sipper that is super complex with the spicing without being gimmicky. I could easily have a couple. A pleasant surprise.

660ml bottle poured into pint glass june8 2010

A almost black with a massive tan head that forms a dome over the top of my glass, crazy retention the head sticks around to the bottom of the glass. Only points lost was the fact that there was only a patch of lace, didn't expect this at all

S some milk chocolate, mild coffee, a little molasses and prune

T a toned down version of what I smell but with some smoke and a touch of earth added and the coffee is a tad burnt

M a low point for this beer as it comes in a little watery

D easy enough too drink and I could session this without many issues, nothing here is going too amaze you but nothing too be ashamed of either

I'd drink this again but I wouldn't go to South America too get it, try if available in your area or if your ever in Argentina

Served in a Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Pours a nearly completely opaque black, with dark ruby-brown highlights and almost two fingers of darkly tan head that leaves surprisingly little lacing behind. The smell has sweet tones throughout, joined by notes plums, cocoa, and oatmeal. The taste generally follows, with the sweetness toned down in favor of a more bitter chocolatiness, but the rest of the aromas translate almost exactly. The body is fully medium, with a more-than-healthy bit of carbonation, leaving an averagely drinkable brew.

Pours a flat black body with musty ruby edge. Somewhat soapy, light brown foam that looks pretty nice. A bit thin but does leave spotted lacing.
Figs, caramel, coffee and what seems to be dark chocolate nose. A bit bitter and the aromas are not very strong. Seems thin in the nose.
Taste is solid. Nothing fantastic or horrid. Bitter, dark chocolate starts off the tasting and caramel moves in just under a lightly roasted coffee wave. Dark fruit, fig and plum are weak, but detectable. alcohol is well hidden. Some sweet malt comes and goes.
A slight bite in the end. Bitter and semi-clean finish.

22 oz wine-like bottle, foil cap and all, with a stylish side-shot label, depicting an ominous looking Andes mountain backdrop, and a white wolf silhouette front and center on the crest.

This beer pours a deep black abyss - no light at the edges, with a few fingers of soapy beige head, which leaves a ring of thin lace as it quickly recedes. It smells of bitter coffee and dark chocolate, some fleshy orchard fruitiness, and floral, earthy hops. The taste is dry coffee, chocolate, some bitter fruitiness, and earth-tone hops. The carbonation is fairly effervescent, the bubbles holding on through the bottle's lifecycle, the body a bit south of medium weight, and smooth, and it finishes off-dry, some chocolate notes lingering.

Not having an inkling of what to expect from our geographical polar opposite, this offering from the heart of Argentine wine country turns out to be a decent offering from the keg side of things.

Strange and worth brew. Ranges from a light stout to something wild ale in identity and rareness...

Presentation: 22 oz bottle. Contemporary and geographical related design around the ingredients and the landscape. Offers a description of intent, flavor, method and some ingredients that are well related to the experience. There are some labeling codes (RNPA, At. T. INAL. M and a Batch Code) difficult to read for the outsider, neither shows IBUs or °Plato, but Alc. by Vol. (6.5%) Poured into a tall tulip glass.

A - Quite the dark body with a frothy and showy large head. Not much retention but some nice lacing and remaining ring.

S - Hmmm, it is a bit malty, but apple, fruits, and some sour tanginess is present. More so as one goes through the drink.

T - Flavor starts with a presence of the malt but quickly shows some complexities and sourness more commonly associated to wild ales, and a bit to Belgium brown reds...

M - It has a medium body, leaning on the light side, with that bitter texture that quickly turns sour maybe due to their barrel aging method.

D - It is a nice brew to have, but not quite what one might expect. Lighter on the side of the stouts and subtly complex on the side of the wild and sour ales (maybe it means all of this by "Andean Stout").

Notes: This is a strange and nice beast. Good craft beer that although I´m not too eager in the final result, makes me want to try other of their brews. Great as a surprise stout and something I´d like to share with aficionados of those tangy, wild and complex ales to pick their brain.

(It is possible that this is a rebranding or rework of their "Negra" but it is not clear that is the case and comparing reviews I was not so sure it was the same beer that was being compared. I´ve notified the webmaster of this and for now decided to add it as a new beer and opting to merge it in the future with the Negra if that makes more sense.)

Appearance: Inky black pour with a tight tan head.

Aroma: Husky, grainy malt character. Light fig notes in the background.

Flavor: Fruity esters up front. A jam-like sweetness that is quickly balanced by a roasted coffee flavor. Balance is nearly even. Finish is crisp and dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium-high carbonation. Slightly astringent.

Overall impression: Not sure that it's a sweet stout but it's a palatable, easy drinking stout.

A- Very dark brown... almost black. Poured with a very thin cream colored head, which quickly dissipated, leaving no lacing behind... too dark to observe any active carbonation from the side of the pilsener glass in which it was served.

S- Smoky right off the nose... salty smoke is definitely the most prominent feature of the nose. Underneath this there is some dark fruit and black licorice.

T- The nose translates into the taste as expected... a good amount of smokiness, roasty malt, dark fruit and black licorice. Finishes dry and smoky with a tiny, tiny touch of hop bitterness. The hops are BARELY detectable here.

M- Slightly oily with lots of unattenuated sugar make for a nice firm body... not a huge body... just firm. The carbonation is sufficient, but not overpowering.

D- Tons of flavor for only 6.5% abv... goes down easily, but this flavor profile doesn't rank high on my list... hence an average drinkability rating...

NOTES: This beer is currently listed as a Milk/Sweet Stout... and I disagree with this wholeheartedly... I would call this a Rauchbier.

Marked as Andaean Stout on my bottle, but I'm sure this is the same beer. Very deep brown on the pour, black in the glass with a stubborn chocolate milk coloured head. Plenty of retention, thin arcs of lacing.

Bitter roast aroma, with a mix of very dark chocolate. Some dried fruit mustiness, can't pick out the specific fruit.

Coffee and cola is first impression, coming across more dry and roasted than sweet. Finish starts to lean towards chocolatey after a few mouthfulls. Sweetens as it warms, cola becoming a bigger player in the taste.

Not especially full bodied, but the carbonation is good for the style. Reasonable mouthfeel.

Pretty decent beer, I'd almost suggest it as a rainy day beer.

The aroma is toasty with heavily roasted malts, coffee, fruit, and earthiness. The appearance is dark brown with a huge head. The flavor is like the aroma. The palate is a bit thin for a stout but not by much. Overall it's a decent beer but it's not a great example of a stout.

Pours black with a small tan head that quickly recedes to a thin cap. Just a hint of lacing is left on the glass surface.

I smell roasted coffee and bitter chocolate. No alcohol detected.

It has coffee flavor and an overall bitter and burnt taste. Leaves a lingering burnt flavor in the mouth. It is not unpleasant but a bit one dimensional.

Although I would call the body medium it just doesn't seem like enough in this beer. It lacks a creamy mouthfeel I look for in a stout.

A solid effort and makes me believe this brewery is worth exploring further.
