If you're visiting Athens and bringing back beer, ABC is a must stop. Five points has a bigger import selection, but ABC provides everything they have in singles, which is great for bringing back as many different beers as possible. If I was a local, I'd probably stop here all the time, since just about everything is kept in coolers. It seems like they concentrate more on the domestic micros, and that's fine by me. Also good to know that the beer buyer, Zack, knows good beer and tries to get all that the good stuff that he can. Will definitely be back next time I find myself in Athens.

This is the best package store in Athens. The selection is excellent and in my experiences the employees really know their beer. The best part about this store is the excellent selection at college town prices. They also have a nice selection of many different liquors and wines. If you have questions about their newest arrivals then they are more than happy to walk you through their inventory with the knowledge of flavors that really sets the standard for the area. Next time you are in Athens I recommend stopping by this store to check out the selection and have a knowledgeable conversation about beer.

Knowledgeability of the staff varies greatly. They do have a vast selection of craft beers. A trendy feature that I like is the selection of singles when purchased by 6 or more, you get 10% off. A mix-and-match 6 pack kind of deal. In these are all the craft beers and some larger mainstream beers as well as the mainstream lambics. Sizes range from 12-22oz and some larger. Prices are very average.

Even though this is a beer site I'll also mention they have an incredibly vast wine section that my wife loves. Unfortunately I've yet to find a beer guy there that is as knowledgeable as their wine folks.

Managed to make one stop at a shop while I was recently in Athens, GA and this one seemed to have good reviews, so I hit it up. It did not disappoint, and I can only say that I wish I had some more time and more room to bring a few more bottles back.

Quality: The store is actually mostly liquor, with a small, but well stocked section of beers from a lot of good breweries. They certainly had the standard macro selections, but a lot of decent stuff too and I was mostly pleased to see Terrapin as I'm a pretty big fan of what I've managed to score of their products via trades.

Service: Well, nothing really special to report here. They received my payment and I received their beer. I didn't really ask any questions, and it's probably a good thing that I didn't have any because nobody was on the floor -- they only had a couple of registers staffed. However, I also like the fact that I didn't have someone there trying to push something on me that I had no interest in or attempting to incorrectly inform me of the products. So no complaints.

Selection: As I mentioned above, they did indeed have a fair selection from different breweries -- a lot of good offerings from American brewers, but they also had quite a few Belgians as well. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have a ton of beers that we don't get around here in the greater Cincinnati area, but then again, we're in a pretty good spot in terms of distribution so I was still happy to find a few things that we can't get here.

Value: Like most decent shops, you always pay a couple bucks more for the good beers, but you get what you pay for and if you want the quality, you just pop for it. Nothing too outrageous though, not like they were gouging anyone for $20 bombers or anything -- in fact, the most expensive bottle I recall seeing was a $13 Terrapin Double Feature, but I still "shelled" out for it (get it?).

Stopped in here on a recent trip to Athens. This location is very easy to spot from the highway with a nice large sign right on the side of the road. There is plenty of parking on the side of the building as well as a little bit in the front. Upon entering you can see the size of this place is quite large. However, most of it is covered with liquor and wine. The craft beer can be found slightly to your left when you walk in. They seem to have a pretty good grasp on the American micro selection. One thing I liked was that you can do any 6 bottles (any size as well) and you receive a 10% discount on all of them. Pretty sweet deal. However, they didn't really have anything that I haven't had before or can't get back home in South Carolina which was kind of disappointing to me. For someone from out of the area stopping in this would be a great place to stop and rack up. The service was quite good with explaining their specials and showing me around. A nice spot to stop by, but that was about it for me.

This store is not my first choice in town, but it is not bad at all. I was surprised to see it getting grades in the Cs. ABC has a nice beer selection, some of which is not available in other stores, Molson XXX for example.

What I particularly like is their selection of singles. They knock 10% off the price of singles when you make a mixed sixpack, which makes it easy to try a lot of different brews. The staff is not the most knowledgeable, but I really have not expected that. This is a big liquor store that caters to many more than just the beer crowd.

The wine selection is nice too, but this is the beer advocate.

NEW REVIEW:
Having returned to ABC after a several month break, I was pleased to see they have a few passionate beer people working. I spoke with a guy named Zack who really wants to see his store do well. If you are in the area, stop by because things are looking up here. I will re-review after I give them a few more chances.

OLD REVIEW:
Here is the story of ABC Package Warehouse in the last 2.5 years I have been in Athens.

When I first arrived in Athens I was thrilled to find that even the liquor store attached to the gas station near my house (Perry's Liquor) had a damn good selection (albeit small) of fine beers. Immediately afterwards I discovered Five Points Bottle Shop and ABC Package Warehouse. Both of these stores were fairly comparable in selection at the time but ABC was larger and cheaper. To my dismay, just as I move across town closer to ABC, their selection and prices get overtaken by Five Points. ABC still has perhaps the second best selection of beers in Athens but now they are higher priced than other places.
