Pours a hazy orange with a massive white foamy head. What a beautiful sight! Smells very hoppy. Hints of pine and citrus and a sweet bready malt. The taste is a wonderful balance of hopes a barley. This is for sure a hopheads beer, but it is balanced enough that even a fan of malty beers can enjoy it. Has a piney hop and a powdery bread like malt. Some sweetness from the alcohol too. The mouth feel is nice and creamy, rolls around the tounge a bit. Wow, this is great tasting beer! I love it! and I am proud it is brewed in my home state!

This IPA shows a clear golden amber color with a nice white head and solid lacing. The aroma is light citrus grass and mild caramel. Nothing too strong or unusual but pleasant enough to suggest some hops and good IPA to come. The flavor follows suit with a very pleasant blend of caramel malt and grassy hops. Nothing complex or highly memorable, but very solid and easily recommnedable. This stuff is medium bodied with mild carbonation that provides an easy flowing feel. Not bad at all and a pleasant surprise.

On tap at Tribeca Tavern in Raleigh

A - dark, cloudy orangish amber with a soft, white head that has great retention

S - citrusy, grapefruit

T - light bready malt, light toastiness, grapefruit, spicy, herbal, floral, bitter finish

M - medium bodied, smooth, crisp, a little heavily carbonated

This is a decent IPA. It has a nice, solid hop character and it's easy to drink. It's worth checking out.

Chased my Mash House Hefeweizen with this beer. Another good choice. Pours a clear light amber color with a better than average size frothy white head. Good lacing and head retention.

Somewhat hoppy aroma promises a good flavor. The aroma is a bit subdued but still lets you know there is hoppy goodness ahead.

Solid IPA flavor. Piney and citrus hops, emphasis on the piney. Good bitterness. Enough malt to balance things out for a hophead.

Mouthfeel is rich and crisp. Nothing watery, no nasty aftertastes. Bitterness is just right.

Overall a good IPA. Nice flavor and not that high in octane.

On tap at the brew pub, in a shaker glass.

Appears a dark copper color with orange highlights, thin white head. Minimal white head. Piney and citrus hop aroma.

Taste does have a crisp hop bite, but good balance. Medium body, medium to high carbonation.

Overall a pretty good IPA.

Currently on tap at home. Pours a nice copper, orange color and a hazy appearance. Smell is a nice piney/citrus aroma, what you would expect from the style. Taste is a nice hoppy flavor but not overwhelming bitter, so some hopheads may not appreciate. I however, am really enjoying this one on tap. I guess since I am having one about everynight, I enjoy this IPA because it is not overly hoppy.

Based on the fact that the Mash House is a relatively small brew-pub-scale brewery, combined with the odd case that there are only a handful of IPAs made in North Carolina that are even respectable, my expectations for this one were moderate at best. It makes a good first impression, though, with a cloudy amber/copper color, and a thin but sticky head. The aroma is a potent combination of pine and earth that isn't going to blow anyone away, but it continues to exceed my expectations. The flavor likewise impresses, with an earthy hop character throughout that is bitingly bitter. It's not wonderful or exciting, but it is at least as good as many average IPAs. A tingly carbonation cuts through the dense, unctuous texture. Overall, I wouldn't call this one a great IPA, but it does a lot right and easily clears the admittedly low bar I had set for it.

Apperance: hazy orange with a one finger head. Some moderate lacing develops during the session.

Smell: floral hop bitterness and some softer citrus tones are easy to detect.

Taste: caramel, floral bitterness, mild grapefruit, and some red apple and pear sweetness. The bitterness is a bit mild so don't expect a big IPA here.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Crisp to start, lightly crisp and a bit dry at the finish. Pretty short aftertaste for the style.

Drinkability: this one is very easy to consume and is one of the better beers here.

Another venture at the brewpub in Fayetteville, NC. This was my absolute favorite brew, and the last one I tried, because I couldn't break myself from it!

A - Coppery orange, hazy, almost like a fruit smoothie, very enticing.

S - Lots of fruit smells, and hops as well, but nothing magnificent.

T - Near-perfect blend of hops, spice, and citrus, every sip was refreshing. Had the bitterness been a bit more powerful, I would've given it a 5.

M - Medium body, not the best for this category, but certainly not lacking.

D - This was my choice drink for the remainder of the evening, and I look forward to experiencing it again.

Poured a light golden with a good frothy head. Light graininess in the aroma, followed by some fairly restrained floral hops. The flavor shows nice balance with fairly bitter grapefruity hops and some light malt on the finish rounding out the flavors. Pleasant and refreshing mouthfeel, not grainy or sweet and medium bodied make this a nice sessionable ipa. Nice job.

Pours hazed amber with a thick, creamy head that leaves some lacing on the glass.

The smell is citric, piney and resiny. Cascade hops come way through.

The taste is hoppy - piney, resiny, and citric (grapefruit). Some malt is there - enough to hold the hops together and give it enough body. Certainly "West Coast" interpretation, though made on the East Coast.

Full-bodied, with a spicy hop kick.

Some might say "over-the-top", "hop-heads" would say "bring it on"..Fairly modest alcohol for style and nice, tasty hop profile makes this one quite drinkable.

Draft pint(s) at the brewpub; Copper and still and absolutely headless; the nose is just a tease of northwestern hops, but the flavor is intensely hoppy (cascade?), metallic and puckering. Not enough of a backbone to it, a bit light bodied and not enough malt foundation. (#2806, 4/21/2007)

Got this in a trade a while back, but I forget from who. FINALLY getting around to trying it.

Poured into a Abita Turbodog pint glass.

3 finger white head with very good retention. Thick and sea-foamy. Eventually fades into a hardy lace which encircles the glass. A good portion of the head stays throughout the entire beer.

Fruity nose. Very citrusy. Oranges and grapefruit. Piney. Nice and hoppy. Nothing too spectacular, but a nice and solid for an IPA.

First sip - tart and citrusy. Very fresh-squeezed Florida to me. Nice hop character, dry. Very crisp. This is how I like my IPA's.

Meduim mouthfeel. Gets a little thicker towards the end, but is very drinkable. Good carbonation.

All in all, a solid IPA. One I would definitely revisit given the opportunity.

Medium amber body with a moderate amount of head but appealingly sticky lacing that hugs the walls of the glass.

Strong grapefruit aroma enhanced by a healthy dose of sweet fruit as well (strawberry, peach?). A kick of spice in the nose as well makes for an alluring smell.

Um, yeah...I like this. The hops are right up in your face and yet totally reserved at the same time. There is a wonderful sweetness throughout to compliment the hop bitterness yet it never turns syrupy sweet like what happens to many DIPAs (I'm aware this is just an IPA). Every flavor, be it spice, citrus, or even a little earth, works together with none of the flavors stepping on another's foot. A clinic on balanced beer.

Just a touch oily although the creaminess is out-of-this-world. I could see myself never having a fridge without this in it if I were to live anywhere close to Fayetteville, NC. Awesome drinkability. The only downfall of this beer is its garish label. Seriously, hire an artist and not your 18 year-old art student brother who is "really coming into his own." Otherwise, well done.

Poured from tap at Bogart's in Raleigh, NC. Under-impressed by the clear copper/ruby color at first, but the white head left good lacing down the sides of my pint, so I reconsidered the appearance's rating. The smell was quite foresty, with great notes of hops, some floral aromas, and a hint of caramel.

Taste was, as one might expect, hoppy as all hell. Left a lingering bite on the finish too, which I enjoyed but others might shy away from. Good carbonation levels, crisp and slightly dry, but extremely drinkable. I'd have had another, but I was driving home that night.

Pours out cloudy amber orange with a decent off-white head. Lacing is spotty and erratic, but looks good where it is sticking.

Smells of caramel and citrus. Malts come out more than the hops.

Taste is balanced between citrus hops and the caramel malts. There is some dark fruit and wet sour flavor that seems a little out of place.

Medium body, nicely carbonated. It's a bit astringent in the aftertaste. Pretty average brew, but the label is cool looking. I am glad I got to try it, so thanks to whoever it was that sent it to me. Having a brain fart right now and can't remember who it was.

Had this on draft at Hi-5 in Raleigh. Delivered to the table with a decent sized head that lasted throughout and left a lacing on the glass that noted each sip. The aroma was a wonderful bouquet of citrusy hops. The taste was everything I expected from the aroma. One of the best hop blends I have had in a while. Reminded me a lot of Victory Hop Wallop. In many ways, this beer was almost like Hop Wallop light; similar hop blend in a standard IPA, not a double. Very drinkable!

acquired via trade! thanks guys. I seem to be in an IPA tasting mode these days. Lots of reviews already on this one. My bottles were not overcarbonated. Looked great. Nice hoppy and medium bodied brews. The reason the taste got the score it did was the undertone of lemon / grass that didn't hit me right. Not a ton of that taste, but enough to acknowledge. Other than that a very drinkable brew.

This is a bit of a "slam dunk", to use Mr. Tenet's words, since I've been to The Mash House, which is a terrific restaurant by the way, and have enjoyed this IPA tremendously on tap. Let's see if the bottled version can measure up.

Beautiful wet foamy head on a solid looking, almost opaque light brown body with barely visible sediment chunks the only thing that escapes the tan morass. Nose is understated and well balanced, but piney, slightly floral hops are the lead player.

Tasty, with good initial bitterness, not quite a DIPA level but approaching that. Pine needles and spice are both involved in the taste, which has big yeast tones as well. Mouthfeel is crisp and clean and low on the bubbles. The taste is key here, not carbonation.

True hopheads will down this one by the case, for me it's slightly puckering so not as drinkable as it will be for some. At least as good as at the restaurant. Highly recommended.

Aroma: Hops and a little sweet malt is present. Mine was not overly carbonated and had a nice off-white head that dissipated to a thin film with some nice thin lacing. A nice bitternes hits the palate with the pale malt coming about halfway through to the finish. This has some backbone and is not just a thin/light ale with the extra hops. This tasted great to me because of the great malt/hop combo that was present with each sip. A vigorous froth releases some sweet malt flavor but the hops hang in there, a very small trace of citrus=lemon was detected at the end of the froth but was gone quickly. I agreed with the label: Damn Good Beer.
A good IPA in my book, different and enjoyable. Cheers.

Bottle Inspection: Not a lot of useful information, but mentions the 4 basic ingredients. No date or abv.

Aroma: A bit sweet, almost “worty” with some floral and citric hop notes. A bit one dimensional.

Appearance: Hazy orange copper glass that poured with a very enthusiastic head (all foam actually) that stayed and started to dry before fading, leaving clumpy lace.

Flavor: Same “worty” under-attenuated sweetness with a overly firm hop that gives an acid burn. The underlying taste is fairly nice with some orange blossom and honey notes, but there isn’t enough hop flavor to balance all the hop burn.

Mouthfeel: A bit heavy, reinforcing the under attenuation aspects, carbonation is a bit high (again, extra sugars at bottling?) and a drying finish.

Overall Impression: Well, it looks pretty and has some nice flavors, but there seem to be a few problems as well. I’d recommend a more complete fermentation with a larger more vigorous pitch, possibly another yeast strain to drop the FG a bit more, later hop additions to keep the flavor and lower the alpha acids, and maybe a longer secondary to let it finish out, possibly with dry hopping then.
Afraid this one sat in my cellar a bit longer than I intended, and I’ve lost who I traded with for it. If you know who you are, please let me know for more proper thanks. This was an educational beer for me, as I brewed an IPA very much like it recently and this helps me confirm what I want to change next time.
