Poured in nonic glass creating a huge billowy tan head which was persistant w/great lacing and sheeting. Very dark brown to black, medium carbonation.

Smell is of oak with some earthy/whiskeyish components.

Taste is also complex: earthy hops, coffee, slight carmel and a great smoky, roasted finish. A slight sour backround is pleasant and rounds out the flavor profile. Hop addition is style appropriate unlike some craft brewed American porters.

Mouthfeel is substantial w/o being cloying.

Drinkability definately points to sessionable. Could easily quaff several.

When I initially reviewed this I thought it was bottom fermented and thought it was odd given the well developed flavors. Palealeman rightfully advised me since then that it is actually top fermented and it all made sense. I picked this up in PA on a business trip for around $17 a case. A regional brew that was a pleasant surprise.

Overall this was a good beer. It poored dark as night with a dark dark brown head that quickly settled. The beer was smooth with a classic porter taste. It was a little watery with low carbonation. Despite that, this brew has a very nice taste with a complimenting aftertaste. You could easily pound three or four of these with out even noticing.

At only $22 a case I will definitely be trying some more of Stegmaier's craft brews.

Being a major beer snob and drinking some of the Worlds greatest beers it is hard for me to admit but this stuff tastes pretty darn good! A strong coffee taste makes this porter a beer that you can slam down. For the price this stuff is worth the jingle and the lower ABV makes this easy to over do it.

Bottom Line: The Lion roars and Stegmaier's Porter flows from it's mouth!

Poured from 12oz bottle into porter glass. Jet black, showing deep garnet in light. Fizzy dark brown head that dissipates rather quickly, leaving some nice lacing on the glass. Smell is clean roasted malt, chocolate and coffee, with something I can't put my finger on that is a bit off-putting, like a speed bump in the smell. Something metallic, like iron. Taste thankfully does not reflect that worrisome note in the smell; taste is clean, crisp roasted coffee with chocolate undertones, finishing lingering on the tongue with some hop presence at the end. Mouthfeel is smooth but relatively light-bodied; besides the odd smell, this is a great sessionable porter.

Poured an opaque black with a nice creamy head with leggy lacing in sheets down glass. Very nice almost nitro stout kinda head and lace job here. Well done indeed.

Well, with the seasonal head full type thing, here goes nothing. Nice even roast with possibly a hint of hop & coffee like creaminess. Maybe a touch of smoked malt.

Very balanced roasted grain, smokey malt, cream & coffee like flavors that have a balanced hop bitterness playing well together. again with the winter head bug thing take with a grain or two of salt. This brew is going down like a champ!

Firm and complex mouth feel here, leading into a very drinkable porter. This is good chit man. Creaminess abounds on a porter that reminds me of a nice dry stout. Meant as a complement.

I like this brew and will try more if given the chance, well done porter.

This poured out as a black color with a pretty big brown head on top. The retention is decent and has a very light lacing. The smell of the beer is roasted and very chocolatey. The taste is more like a stout, very rich and full flavored. The mouthfeel is a bit on the heavy side. It's drinkable and has a nice carbonation to it. Overall this beer was pretty good but I would call it a stout instead of a porter.

Pours a black color. 1/3 inch head of a brown color. Slight retention and poor lacing. Smells of sweet malt, slight roasted malt, hint of alcohol, and slight dry hop. Fits the style of an American Porter. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of roasted malt, slight sweet malt, slight dry hop, hint of wood, hint of yeast, and a hint of grain. Overall, aroma is slightly muted, but the tastes is much more complex.

Rewarded a sixer for working a shift for a fellow coworker
Most likely purchased at Byron's Liquor
12 oz Poured into Fuller's Pint

A ~ Dust on the bottle first off. Looked nice,
minimal head, hardly any lacing.

S ~ Smells of leather and roasted (minimal) malts.

T ~ Does not taste anywhere close to the color of the beer.
Minimal roasted flavor. Some chocolate and smoke coming through, mostly smoke. No coffee notes whatsoever, as i have
come to love in Porters.

M ~ THIN. Not very pleasant, cloying flavor that reminds me of if salt was added to alter the palate a bit. Not a fan.

Overall, a very wimpy porter with
not alot going on or shining through, period.
Would not drink again.

I was able to pick this up from my local spot for an absurd sale of $15 a case (24). I have been pouring it in my DFH snifter ever since. The color is opaque black, literally not allowing any light through it. There a tan coffee head which does not last very long as lacks persistent lacing.

The smell is of coffee and chocolate and black malts, which makes for an excellent blend of aromas. Those notes dominate this smell and they do not allow for any others to come through. On the first sip, a taste of black malt exists, but does not last as it lingers on the tongue. The finish really sets this beer in the very good category. Rich chocolate and black malts persist and combine excellently. A slight smoky flavor accents the background of this fine finish. There is also a hint of hop bitterness, which balances well with the strong malt content.

The carbonation is excellent and last through the entire drink. The 5.4% keeps the alcohol taste low and compliments the beer well. For the deal that I got, this beer was a steal. It is a fine crafted porter that will not disappoint. While the nose, is not stellar, the finish really brings it out and makes it an excellent drink. If anyone is in Boone then they need to pick this up.
