A- Pours a golden/copper color with a finger of creamy, off-white head. Leaves great lacing.

S- Super hoppy, big pine aroma, a bit of caramel malt lingers in the background.

T- As in the nose, the hops here are massive. The menu says they use Chinook, Columbus, Amarillo, and Simcoe. Enormous pine and resin flavor, some spicy pepper, leafy with some honey and a long, bitter, slightly alcoholic finish. There's a pretty decent caramel malt as well.

M- Medium body, carbonation is moderate to low and gives a slick, slightly sticky texture. Finish is long, dry, and very bitter.

O- This is a very solid DIPA, it does the west coast hop flavor pretty damn well. Personally I think Jupiter's IPA is just slightly better, but it would be hard to go wrong with either.

On-tap at Jupiter in Berkeley, CA.

A: Has a deep, rich, hazy amber-red body. There's a thin white head that dissipates quickly, but which leaves behind decent lacing for its size.

S: Strong sweet malts really dominate the nose (although, it looks like most others who had this beer had a very different experience here); butterscotch and caramel are prominent, and there's something that smells almost like the candy sugar smell commonly found in Belgian beers. Pine and hints of citrus hops also present, but they're almost in the background. A light spiciness from the alcohol shows up too.

T: Sweetness dominates again, with the same flavors from the nose. Pine, herbal, floral hops do show up before citrus ones come around on the (alcoholic) finish– enjoying the variety here.

M: Light-medium body for the style, with strong carbonation lending the body a creamy character. A bit of a bite from the alcohol, and a lightly dry finish.

O: An average beer for the style, but in the world of DIPAs that still makes for a pretty enjoyable beer. Check it out if you're at Jupiter and particularly want one, or if you're going to be sampling more than one of their offerings.

A: A slightly hazy amber/copper color with a nice white head.

S: Definitely has the hoppy smell, with a hint of orange.

T: The hops definitely come alive with this beer, though it's not as bitter as I would prefer. I feel it could use some more hops, but I like my DIPA very hoppy.

M: Quite smooth, with just the right amount of carbonation. It's a little bit syrupy, but just a bit.

D: Very good DIPA, surprisingly easy to drink even for those that aren't fans of strong ales. It's a bit watery (for a DIPA) for my tastes, though I guess that's what gives it an easy drinkability.

Overall: Pretty solid beer, though it could have more hops. Nonetheless, quite delicious.

On tap at the Jupiter brewpub in downtown Berkeley.

A: Pours a hazy, dark amber with small off-white head; moderate retention, not much in the way of lacing. The retention may be excused by the fact that a server brought it over with several other drinks for the table. I'm guessing they tweaked the recipe since the earlier reviews, since this seems darker.

S: Whoo. Like sniffing pine needles. There is a small citrus note in there, but it's pretty much like sticking your nose up an evergreen's ass. Caramel too. Nothing all that complex for a DIPA.

T: Taste-wise, not particularly complex either. Lots of pine, as noted earlier, and there are hints of citrus in there. The bitterness is well balanced with spice, earth, and caramel in the finish. But the aftertaste is resiny.

M: Medium-bodied; slightly syrupy. Moderate carbonation and a noticeable, but not awful, booze warmth.

D: A pretty solid go-to DIPA, but nothing outstanding. I'm glad they have this because it means I'll have something to enjoy the next time I'm there, but it's not worth a trip just for this.

On tap at Jupiter on 7/14/09.

A - Slightly hazy amber/orange body with moderate carbonation and slim off-white head that settled into a thin veil but left a thick coat of lace around the glass.

S - Spicy and piney hops with some citrus notes paired with a sweet, slightly burnt caramel malt presence. Aroma is perhaps a bit lacking for a DIPA, but it's still above average. Moderate waft of alcohol emerged as it warmed up a bit.

T - Hops, while a bit restrained in the nose, really jump out in the flavor in the form of sticky pine and resiny hop bitterness with some juicy citrus notes. Resinous, spicy and complex hop profile. However, an earthy character develops in the backend and finishes with an assertive hop bite backed by sweet and grainy malts.

M - Medium body with a syrupy texture and moderate carbonation that displays a prickly, bristly character. Decent amount of alcohol warmth on the palate. Finishes with an aggressive lingering bitterness on the back of the tongue.

D - Very good DIPA overall, though perhaps just a bit lackluster in the aroma department. Otherwise, this is a very solid example of the style.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured into an imperial pint glass. Comes in at 8.80% and 80 IBUs.

A-Pours a dark brown. Has a 1.5 finger off white head that sticks around. This one leaves a lot of lace around the glass.

S-Lots of fresh citrus hops dominate. The menu says they use Cascade, Amarillo, Chinook, and Simcoe, so no real surprise there. Also pick up on some sweet caramel malt.

T-The citrus hops are very forward. Not nearly as sweet as it smells. There is a good level of bitterness, but not over the top like a lot of WC IPAs. It reminds me a lot of White Knuckle, but a little less sweet.

M-The body falls on the lighter end of the medium spectrum. Good carbonation.

D-Goes down easily and the abv is very well hidden.

This was my first time with this beer and I really liked it. As stated in my review, it comes off as a less sweet White Knuckle. Would order again.

On tap at The Bear Lair (UC Berkeley)

Against better judgement, I consumed three, large cups (probably 20oz) during the USC v. Cal game. I had no idea that is was so strong and though it knocked me around by the end of the game, It was incredibly drinkable and made me very happy. Had a very nice gravity, a very floral smell and most importantly, a great taste.

Nicely done.

Imperial pint at the brewery for $5.50, sampled along with their standard IPA and their 18 Barrel IPA, consumed 1/21/09, reviewed from notes, color is an orangish brown, one inch soapy off white head, minimal retention and lacing, aroma consists of piney hoppinesss, caramel, sweet malt, light citrus, some booze, and tangerines, taste is slightly dry at first, some sweetness and chewy notes in the middle, slightly hoppy finish with a warming aftertaste, gets boozier and sweeter as it warms, sweet, hot, and mildly dry mouthfeel, medium to full bodied, too sweet at times, could not have drank more than I had, heavy on the stomach, needed some better balance, not smooth all the way through, did not enjoy this one as much as the brewpub's other IPAs, this way pretty true to its style though and better than expected, would still probably drink again, recommended

Poured from the tap @ Jupiter into an imperial pint glass....Nice dark golden color with an average head and lacing. The smell was quite nice...sweet fruity aromas as well as the hops were very impressive. The taste was very crisp , a little dry, but overall really tasty. The combination of hops and malts work well in this ale. Very drinkable, not too much of an alcohol taste, and very refreshing. Very well done

Pours a dark golden with a good head and very nice lacing. The aromas are of sweet apricot and orange. Fruity and floral. The taste is surprisingly dry given the aromas and also relatively light. There are some floral and citrusy notes up front followed by a lingering floral hop bitterness. Mouthfeel leans toward San Diego style- thin and with far more hops than malt, but the dryness is nice and the hops are pleasant, so this drinks quite well. Quite pleasant to sit on their beautiful patio and have one of these on a warm afternoon.

At first glance the beer looks like it might be a let down. It is light in color and there wasn't much head on it and its a bit hazy. I still gave the appearance a 3 because it had a nice color to it, even though its not what I would expect from a DIPA at all.

The smell was very nice; all of the overused hop terms like "floral" and "citrus" come to mind here. The beer was heavy on the hop aroma and taste but mild to moderate on the hop bitterness. The taste was a nice balance of hop and malt. Lots of american pale malt here, heavy and sweet. Bascially the flavor was made of 2 big flavors (citrusy hops and sweet malt) but other than that there wasn't a whole lot of complexity to it. Kinda refreshing to see a big beer like this that goes back to the basics.

The body was quite heavy which is the way a hoppy 8% beer should be. Very drinkable. Don't often go to berkeley but if I'm there again I will order some more of this stuff.

pours clear reddish brown with nice streams of carbonation floating up to decent bubbly white head with decent retention. it is sweet and pungent with citrusy and spicy overtones as well as a nice punch of hops. the first sip has syrupy sweet malts followed by a good hoppy period. very well balanced between the hoppy and fruity/malty flavors. creamy and smooth mouthfeel with a good minimal amount of carbonation. a good beer that has balanced a lot of complex flavors.

Pour: Draught to imperial pint glass. A bright orange body with a half finger of off white head that's extremely sticky along the glass and leaves excellent lacings. A few bubbles are visible throughout the beer.

Nose: Sweet floral hops, smoky (like smoked jerky) malts, and an astringent sourness.

Mouth: Creamy mouthfeel all the way through from entrance to swallow. A harsh bitter swallow with lasting turnip like flavors. Sweet malts up front with pine and rosemary characteristics gives it a good strong bite. The mf becomes slightly chewy in the back, being made up of tiny tingly bubbles, but is a bit too frothy in the swallow.

This brew comes on the browner side, somewhat hazy. Pretty good citrus aroma, but doesn't knock me over. Bitterness starts very solid, but is not harsh. Very drying. Bitterness fades quickly though, relatively speaking. Citrus hop flavor is pretty good. The malt is toasty and roasty. I haven't seen roastiness in a double IPA before, but it works rather nicely. Malt complexity isn't as good as in other dIPAs. Kinda wished the bitterness lingered more.

Overall: a roasty double IPA
