Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.
The beer pours a medium brown color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is toffee, honey and caramel. The flavor is light toffee and caramel malts with some yeast. Thin, watery mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

I bought myself a 50 cl black can. There's a picture of the Bohemian castle in gold along with an emperor crown and some gold medals. Looks really nice.
A: The color is very dark, almost black with hints of red. The head is massive, creamy and light brown. The lacings left after the slow dissipation is quite impressive.
S: Light roasted malt, with a hint of smoke. Floral hops and dark dried fruits. An obvious flowery smell. Chocolate.
T: Roasted malt, but a bit thin in taste. Dark dried fruits along with coffee and bitter chocolate. There's very little hops in this one.
M: A bit thinner than I expected, still medium but a bit thinner than I want a Schwarzbier to be. The carbonation is moderate. Aftertaste is a bit short, and holds some sweetness and some dry bitterness.
D: A Schwarzbier is always a Schwarzbier. This is of course a nice beer, but not the best Schwarzbier I've had.

A- This beer has a jet brown body with a garnet glow with a thick tan head that last for a good bit. The body is a bit too dense to see much carbonation except for a few bubbles at the base of the glass.
S- This beer has a clean aroma with a flinty note and a faint black malt that has a bit of dish soap quality to it.
T- The nice smooth light flavor of black malt that is not astringent or bitter with a graham note. There is a hint of licorice that comes through as the beer warms a bit. There is a light dark nougat note with a very light hop tang in the finish. The black malt flavor lingers for just a moment after each sip.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a slight slippery texture and no alcohol heat.
D- This beer is very smooth nice dark black malt flavor but it is a bit soft.

Never even heard of this beer until my wife brought it home.
Pilsner glass pour with a cola brown color and a small off-white head. Roasted malts, light pear and a slight coffee aroma. Dark malty taste with some campfire smoke in there as well and some light bitterness in the aftertaste. Watery, thin mouthfeel. Drinkability is somewhat higher though the taste, for me, would get tiresome quickly.
Overall it was nice to try this gold medal Prague beer though I am sure this brew is much better directly at the source.

A darkbrown beer with la small beige head.
A faint smell of roasted coffee, sweet dried fruits and burnt bread.
The sweet tones are dominating, dried plums and dates, some roasted notes, very short bitterness.
Rather creamy mouthfeell.
In all a bit bland, no specific highlights.

Appearance is a dark brown with red hue having a nice pillowy head with light lace. Smell having a malty earthiness to it. Taste has just a touch of roasted malt flavor with a note of chocolate with a nice hop balance. Mouthfeel is medium with good body and carbonation. A bit more mellow than most schwarzbiers I've tried making a nice drinker for me.

500ml can brought back from prague by my parents. no english anywhere on this one.
A- the beer pours from the can a black colored body. ruby highlights can be seen around the edges when held up to the light. a beige colored head forms on top and lasts a long time, leaving behind solid rings of lacing.
S- dark roasted and bread-like malts. a faint hint of coffee.
T- dark roasted malts. somewhat sweet as well. a bitter coffee finish.
M- medium to full bodied with a low level of carbonation. very smooth.
D- easy to finish. very sessionable and 3.8% ABV with a better than expected amount of flavor. check this one out if youre a fan of the style.

should have originally reviewed this one when i was living in Germany, but here we are back in foco
a- deep dark amber, as nice as the color is i thought i wouldnt see through it, the two finger head only stuck around for so long before reducing to a very light head with some lacing.
s- mmm... bready and toasty bread
t- taste follows smell with some well toasted malt through and through a light creamyness to even out all the dark toast
somewhat biting and lightly carbonated. medium to thin body
d- drinkable all the way.
good, but not as exciting as i remember

Appearance- Fairly dark with a gorgeous ruby body when held up to the light. Not much head. What there is is a light brown, and absolutely no head retention. No lacing either.
Smell- Very faint. I get some malt, some sweetness coming though with hints of coffee.
Taste- Doesn't knock you over the head with strong flavors. They are muted, but nice. Some soft malts with a mild roastiness. Ints of bitter coffee taste.
Mouthfeel- Medium body. A little under-carbonated IMO, altho BJCP lists this as a representative beer for the style.
Drinkability- This is not a style I normally drink, so I'll keep my mouth shut. It ain't bad, ain't great. Try it for yourself.

Bottle shared by Milos- A deep cola pour with a thin beige ring. Nose is coffee and hops, musty tobacco, some pit fruits. Tastes very coffee like with no sweetness whatsoever. Dry and hoppy with dark chocolate too. Surprisingly light bodied and super easy drinking. Very good. Thanks Milos!

No music, just have the Bruins game going in the background. Been meaning to grab this for years now - and just never have. $1.99 for a 25 oz of beer?, sign me up.
As you would expect with a Schwarzbier, its dark but not thick on the pour. A nice brown head settles down quickly leaving some tan bubbles floating around the top. It's actually more cola reddish brown than black, but has a nice inviting color.
I smell coffee and black licorice flavored malts with a very faint and muted smoky hint to it. It could use more malt though - it comes up a bit short
The malt smells more prominent than they taste, and when upon my first sip - albeit to cold - the flavors are a bit muted. I get a bit of a bitter chocolate/coffee taste around the edges. I don't know why, but this reminds me of a walnut in many ways. At first I was going to say it tasted like a walnut shell - but as it warms up it actually reminds me of the nut itself. Maybe a little cocoa and caramel - but more than anything else it is very very light. Somewhere in there you get the very subtle floral hops character - but in a beer that doesn't have much character to start... it is not easy for my palate to place
It is certainly drinkable - but I would like to have a bit more character. It could use some more body, a richer malty flavor, and just better execution. I thought it would improve as it warmed, but it didn't.
Overall - a nice larger, especially for the value... but not something I will be coming back to often.

A - pours a deep, dark brown, almost black. There is a beautiful head on it as well.
S - very sweet, caramely malt. There is also a touch of brown sugar.
T - taste follows the nose, but it is more roasty in taste than the nose makes you believe. There are some faint caramel and brown sugar flavors that are pushed aside by the toasted malt.
M - very full and smooth...great mouthfeel to it
D - This is a good beer - I really like this style, although I have had only one other Schwarzbier. This is a good alternative to a stout or porter - it will definitely be added to my winter line-up. Flavorful, but not something that is too bold in its flavor. Very easy drinking and enjoyable.

Wow. I had no idea when I ordered this beer today that it was so low in alcohol. I knew that black lagers weren't necessarily stronger than lighter lagers, but 3.8%? I really enjoyed this and now that I know I can have this for Breakfest (lol) I'm hooked. Great black color, very good malty test, very, very drinkable. A very difficult beer to sip slowly. I never had a german Schwarz as good as this. HIghly recommend.

Pours dark brown with a few winks of red. An inch or so of light tan foam.
Smells like roasted malt and a whiff of nuttiness. A bit of ... strange almost oxidized notes in the aroma.
Taste is roasted, nutty malt, but there's a strange metallic oxidized bite to it. It's weird. Kind of bracing, almost. Not a bad beer, but very straight-forward and simple.
Mouthfeel is a bit watery.

Pours a dark brown with red highlights. A nice two fingered head forms quickly and had great retention. Large amount of spotty lacing is left on the glass. Has a distinct Noble hop aroma. Just a hint of roasted malt. The flavor starts of interesting with chocolate notes from the malt combining with the spicey and earthy hop flavors. Unfortunately the flavor is short lived and ends very watery. Bitterness is low to moderate. The body is a bit thin but does have a nice carbonation. An easy drinking beer with a very low ABV and gentle flavors. The flavor just falls away too quickly.

500ml bottle with "born on" date of 28.05.2008. tasted in early/mid may 2009.
dark brown, almost black. red hues under the light. no haze. large, light tan head fades to wisps and ring. decent lace, esp further down the glass.
aroma: faint cola and caramel malt, and a roast character with hint of coffee and whiff of euro hops. all a bit subdued however.
taste: slightly more character in the flavor, esp as things warm up. flavors are similar, with slightly livelier hop flavor and bitterness (still mild to moderate), matched by a faint roast. trace acidity near the finish. faint coffee and cola again in the aftertaste.
medium body, smooth with some light acidic and astringent notes before the finish. moderate to lively carbonation is crisp upfront, and helps with flavor lift.
not that bad, especially considering the low $3 price tag. i have a feeling it is even better when fresh.

Pours a deep brown with some ruby highlights and offers a full inch of tan head. Quite clear and reddish in the light, not as dark as many of the style. In exchange you get better retention and some scattered lacing.
Mostly roasted carob/dark chocolate on the nose and without the typical lager notes I've seen in the style. As the carbonation diminishes, some lager notes blend in yet remain slight and allow for some earthy hops to show themselves as well.
Taste follows the nose but is somewhat light in body and variety. The feel offers more body than expected however, all the way through to the finish where a touch of chocolate returns. Not as crisp as is typical, limiting drinkability somewhat.
Interestingly, this beers ingredients include; water, malt, hops, and artificial sweetener. Didn't pick up any off flavors or unexpected sweetness in the brew.

Served on tap at a restaurant/bar in Prague in a large half-litre mug.
Poured a dark brown with a garnet hue when held to the light; thick off white head of tightly formed bubbles. Aroma was slightly roasty, but I got more malt sweetness and even a hint of dark fruit. Taste was also slightly roasty, but not overly so, low to no hop presence in the flavor, just enough bitterness to counter the sweet malt. Medium body leaning toward a dry finish, though not astringent.
Overall recommend. Not like some harsher German schwarzbiers that I've had - this one seemed more like a 'dark pils' to me - smooth, clean dark lager. Interesting take on the style.

500 ml bottle from Riga
Pours dark amber/quite similar to cola colour with large tan and considerably fizzy head that soon fades to foamy 1/2 finger layer, downsliding lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, bits of mild roasted.
Taste is similar and mild, but more roasted, medium dry finish and low bitterness that lasts into the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is light-medium with less than average carbonation and weak and smooth alcohol warming.
Overall, I liked the beer. Although it is rather mild, its taste has nice roasty character and it is very refreshing.

smells sweet and smokey
taste is kinda fruity for a lager and somehow i pickup smoked meat??? must be the malts but its different which sets it apart
mouthfeel/drinkability is so so - light to medium body with not enough carbonation for my liking

Pours cola colored - medium brown and translucent, with light tan head. Nose is roasty but rather tame, even with a good solid pour and large head. Light coffee taste, very drinkable, and a rather inoffensive beer. Could be a nice gateway beer for people apprehensive about dark beers.

(From notes)
A - Poured with a finger of light tan, creamy looking head. Deep, dark brown that verges on black in color. Hints of shimmering ruby around the edges. Just OK head retention.
S - Slightly sweet maltiness up front; touch of dark fruits; pretty muted overall
T - Mirrors the aroma with the hint of sweetness, but the dark fruit is actually closer to raisiny/pruney. Solid enough, but not that complex.
M - Thinner MF, a little sticky, pretty tame carbonation.
D - Pretty solid drinkability given the way below average abv. Fine session beer with just enough taste and flavor to keep things moderately interesting.
Just an OK take on the style, and there are way more complex out there. Check it out, but only if readily available.

Got a bottle of this from Tommy C. Pours a very dark almost black color with an egg shell white head.
Aromas, i'm not there were any. I could barely make out any sweet smells or hoppyness. Not much going on here.
Taste was similar as well. Reminded me of seltzer water. Very tingly on the tongue and I could not taste much at all.
M & D while the mouthfeel was not good, medium to lite body, I could probably drink this all day, maybe in the summer. But give me a weiss any day of the week.

Boy, is this one a disappointment. I'd had plenty of Schwarzbier when over in Berlin (Markischer Landman comes to mind) and I could have sworn they had more kick than this. This beer pours beautifully (nice head) and looks impressive (deep rich ruby), but bottom line... it's just plain watery. What little notes there are, are lost in the thinness. And 3.8% ABV just don't cut it. Isn't this what they call, in the States, "Sunday beer"? Not for me!
