Krusovice Cerna has a very thick, foamy, beige head, a good amount of lacing left behind, and a clear, yet dark, ruby-brown appearance. The aroma is of dark-roasted malt, brown bread crust, sweetness, and even coffee. Taste is of the same, with just a touch of hop bitterness at the end. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Krusovice Cerna finishes crisp, refreshing, and highly drinkable. Overall, this is a delicious and tasty beer.

Served in a pint glass.

Appearance: Looks like a stout, superior dark brownish black with a thin body. Head is a very light tan that rose to maybe 1/2" off the body.

Smell: Light malty sugars, almost bock like but it is then again light.

Taste: Molasses come off light, little sweet but still lightly bitter. Honestly it feels like the only thing missing is dessert.

Mouth: Medium carbonation, lightly sweet after-taste.

Overall: Good beer but not exactly great. I have had Schwarzbiers before and didn't even know this was one till I started taking my first sip. Not a hard beer to drink and pretty easy to like, grab a glass...Salud!

Bottle pour at the BevMo Holiday Beerfest held at Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is mainly of dark roasted malt. Taste is much the same with a mild roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer that is fairly one dimensional in the aroma and flavor.

Serving type: 500 ml bottle. The “BORN ON DATE” is “23.03.2012.”

Appearance: Poured into a flute. The color is medium brown with dark ruby tones. Two fingers of light tan head dissipated quickly to leave a layer of buttery lacing.

Smell: Dark and toasted malts, caramel, molasses, grassy hops (it has that fresh cut hay smell), apple, plum, fig, and prune. Very crisp and nutty. It is also on the sweet side.

Taste: It is almost reminiscent of canned nitro stout. It mostly mirrors the aroma but the smells are much more pronounced. Dark and toasted malts, grassy hops, nutmeg, cocoa, caramel, and dark fruit. Leaves a nice bitterness lingering in the mouth for a second or two after each sip.

Drinkability: It is a million times better on tap (surprise, surprise). Out of the bottle, though, it is what I would expect from a Czech schwarzbier.

One of the Wednesday Night Trivia crew was recently over in the Czech Republic for work and brought back some CANs for me. Once again, it pays to advertise and my thanks to Rod Shenk for the gift(s).

From the CAN: This is very loose translation due to the wording on the CAN being muddy at best - "Krušovice jsoudiky polozeidealni his address for quality beer. Best of Saaz hops pramentou Křivoklátsko vodumaji namely in the vicinity. ie beer at home here already since 1581." If I get hold of a bottle, I have a feeling the label may be easier to read.

The Crack revealed a CAN filled to the brim with beer and the Glug produced some VERY fast-dissipating deep-tan head that ended up as mere wisps. Color was a deep, dark cola-brown that allowed ZERO light penetration. Even the white bits was black! Nose smelled of coffee, tar, dark chocolate and even a slight metallic tang. Mouthfeel was medium and it had a molasses-like sharpness on the tongue that may have accounted for the metallic smell. It actually tasted much better than it smelled, with a licorice/anise flavor coupled with molasses in the mouth. I liked that it was not sweet at all and coupled with its low ABV, this could be a good session beer. I may not personally want more than a couple/few, but it does remain a CANdidate.

A dark, nutty brown looking beer with a medium, finger sized head that is a brownish-white in colour and has a bubbly look to it. The retention is about average.

A muted, nutty aroma at the start along with a little bit of dark malts and some toasted bread too. There is also a faint coffee aroma too.

Light roasted malts and a little bit of toasted bread hit you straight away with this one but don't overpower you. There is some dark, chocolate malt like flavours in the middle and a hint of coffee too.

Smooth and light with a mild fizz to it and solid carbonation and there is a touch of bitterness right at the end too. It is a pretty basic beer on the palate but a good one.

This one is a very nice beer, particularly for a relatively low strength dark lager. It was very simliar to a lot of the nicer dark lagers I tried whilst in Slovakia last year and it a beer that I will most likely good back to every now and again.

500ml bottle poured into pint glass 22/1/12

A clear reddish cola with a two finger light brown head that quickly falls too a thick film leaving no lace

S mild chocolate, prune, cold coffee and molasses pretty faint all-around

T as it smells but the flavors are a little stronger then the nose

M thin and a little flat without much aftertaste

O not offensive and not impressive, I could take it or leave it and I wouldn't look for it

I suppose for a light beer it has some flavor but not much going on here at the end of the day

Brought a can of Krusovice Cerne home from a recent trip to Europe. The beer poured very dark / opaque with slight off white head that only laced at the beginning. The smell included roast, hints of sweet malt/caramel, and some dark fruit. The taste did not dissapoint, there was toasted breads some burnt quality to the brew, but it was somewhat weak on the finish. Mouthfeel was ok, good carbonation, but very light body. Overall it would make a good session beer.

16.9 oz brown bottle poured into a pilsner glass - dated born 6/1/2010

Krusovice Cerne poured a clear dark brown body with a limited off-white head. Aroma is light, of roasted dark malts [chocolate, coffee] and a [very] little nutty. The taste is similar to the nose, with the hops and alcohol almost undetectable. Mouth feel is light bodied with medium carbonation.

The ABV and lighter flavor of Krusovice Cerne make it a good candidate for a dark session brew. Goes well paired with brownies.

500 ml. 1 year old bottle. Pours black with a thick, long lasting off-white head and much lacing. Aroma is of sour dough, toast and hints of hops. Light, smooth body. Taste is of toasted malt and not much else. I hope to find a fresh bottle next time.

A: The beer pours a dark brown color with some reddish notes and a finger of tan head.

S: There's a definite vegetal note with some corn and sulfur. A mild roast that does let you know it's a schwarzbier. Lightly acidic with some hints of dark chocolate and coffee.

T: Roast and coffee are the first things I pick up on the palate. A definite acidity to it as well as a mild sweetness. Some light cocoa notes. No real off-flavors, but not really any standout, good ones, either.

M: Light to medium bodied with a medium carbonation.

O: Better than the Imperial, but not a great schwarzbier either.

From chilled 0.5 L can into warmed pokal, this beer shows dark ruby-brown to black body with semi-persistent pearly head. Following the dark colour and solid head, one would expect typically aromatic malty-caramel smell, but the smell turns out to be faint and surprisingly weak.
On a first sip tastes really good, malty and roasted, with some smoke, but after that leaves somehow dull aftertaste in mouth.
Maybe I expected too much of Krušovice's beer, but this one is a bit of disappointment to me: too average, with nothing special to be remembered of.

Appearance: Dark brown to black color thin body. Completely opaque. The head is thin with some mild bubbles. It dissipates rapidly. The head forms a ring around the side of the glass.

Smell: Roasted malt odor. Hints of charcoal. Wet smelling. I think it smells like Guinness. Slight sweetness. Hints of chocolate.

Taste: Roasted flavor. The malts are good. a nice balance between sweet charcoal malts and a bitter hop backing. Not bad at all for the price of 1.99 for a pint and a half. Leaves a slightly sour taste upon finish. Hints of coffee and wood flavor.

Mouthfeel: Light. Thin. Good balance. Light carbonation.

Overall: Good for a change of pace. I normally don't drink black lagers. The price was excellent and it was well constructed. I will recommend this to my friends.

This seems to be a rare beer (at least in Florida) but I was able to procure this Cerne as well as the light version of Kruovice.

Apperance - pours a little thin looking for a Schwarzbier but has nice color and a fizzy head.

Smell - has that Schwarzbier smell of roasted chocolate malts and a mild hoppy charredness

Taste - smooth and drinkable with the roasted malts dominating and some mild malts backing everything up.

Not a bad Schwarzbier. A touch thin for my taste but good flavors for what it had.

Black with some brown when held up to the light. Small amount of off-white head that just leaves a ring around the glass. Full tangy malt nose with some baker's chocolate. Light creamy body rich on toasted malts. Unsweetened chocolate just like the nose. A good amount of carbonation tingles all the way to the finish. Easy drinking full malty flavor.

On tap in Prague. Served in tall Krusovice glass.

A - very dark mahogany rather than black (cerny); clear with a tan head that has good retention.

Aroma: rich and malty: superb.

T - slightly sweet with a fine very dark malt flavor that has no burnt notes.

M - medium-light body, medium carbonation and a slighty dry finish.

O - very drinkable beer with excellent aroma.

I bought this not paying attention that the bottle dated from 2009, so I have to give props for the excellent head retention. Deep, clear brown color. It has a roasted malt aroma and flavor - mild and drinkable. I think it goes especially well with food. I whipped up a curried rice dish for dinner. The food brought out the roasted flavor of the beer. As far as mouthfeel, it's not like a Belhaven, but then again, we're not talking about an ale here. This is a dark lager. I would have this again, hopefully a fresh version next time.

Pours a clear, reddish brown hue. Small, compact head, average retention and very little lacing.

The aroma has some nice coffee notes to it, along with general maltiness.

The flavor is a bit boring, with just a touch of near-roasted malt, coupled with some crusty bread. Thin overall. The mouthfeel seems watered down, the carbonation fizzy rather than creamy.

Mediocre for a Schwarzbier, but drinkable.

Pours very dark brown with rubby highlights (seems opaque but is actually clear), capped by rather thin yet well-formed light-tan creamy head that holds well. Aroma is moderately malty with caramel and dark chocolate qualities and herbal-spicy hops in the background. Flavor is rather neutral malt with moderate herbal-spicy hops leading into the dry finish with lingering roastiness complemented by hop-bitterness. Medium-light bodied and watery on the palate.

Pours a brown with some red highlights when held to the light. Light cream colored foam head, no lacing.

Light coffee and cocoa aromas. Roasted malt, some sweetness.

Nice roasted malt up front. Clean roasted grain flavors, some light coffee and cocoa powder. A little grain sweetness, some brown bread. Light bitterness. Pretty smooth. Flavors a solid, but a little on the light/mild side.

Lighter bodied, a little thin. Good carbonation. Easy drinking at its best. Not the best of style, but pretty good.

I finally found a bottle of this in NYC that wasn't two years old. Thank you Key Foods. This was "born" just four months ago. Immediately this tastes different (and better) than my previous experiences with well-aged brethren.

At first this beer reminded me of a stout for roasty notes upfront and smooth, creamy malty follow through. There's a slight acidic bite, reminding me of Guinness. There's more character than a Guinness stout, however, this is more on par with a Beamish or Murphy's. There are also hints of licorice and toffee. Heck of a beer. Wish I'd bought more.

This beer pours a clear, very dark reddish brown colour, with one finger of foamy pale beige head, which settles quickly, leaving some low inkblot lace around the glass. It smells of light roasted malt, a bit of dry cocoa and coffee grounds, and earthy hops. The taste is toasted caramel malt, some sugary root vegetable, semi-sweet chocolate, and leafy hops. The carbonation is moderate, the body medium weight, and nice and smooth. It finishes still fairly sweet, the graininess and mild hops somehow seeming more drying than they actually are - it's a good thing.

A nice underlying Czech lager, roasted up into a decent cerny pivo, or schwarzbier. Whatever Euro specificity one subscribes to, this is nearly as easy drinking as it gets.

On draft at Rudi's, Hania, Crete.

Pours ruby brown with a lumpy tan panna head. Kola and earthy rubber nose. Licorice, plum and soil malts, slight sweet coffee hit in the middle and tingly spicy Zatec hops to end. Fruity note to finish and tight linger. Light to medium, fizzy, slightly sticky.

Had deeper dark lagers, but light and drinkable.
