massive thanks to Lat for the excellent trade.

enjoyed from hoppin frog snifter.

a - brew poured a murky mahogany with a thin bubbly head. some visible bubbling could be seen dancing to the surface from about a half inch below the surface, but the beer was too opaque to see any action below that. kinda cool how the bubbling seems to come from just below the surface...and evenly around the glass.

s - whiskey sweetness glazed over caramel malt. some vanilla and even a hint of mint leaves. toasted malt. the booziness gives it a mentholated vibe in my nose as well as fresh brewed tea.

t - leads with toasted caramel malt with a splash of whiskey. the whiskey doesn't seem to be overbearing at all, but rather a side dish to the core scotch ale flavors. i'm a big fan of the style and this is a wonderful take.

m - rather smooth and not too boozy. extremely drinkable. kind of like a winter warmer. not nearly as abrasive as some other barrel aged wee heavies like backwoods. the whiskey is a great pairing on this beer.

o - overall a very nice medley of barrel aging on a base beer. i wish i had the base to compare it to although the reviews of outta kilter seem to suggest that the whiskey barrels doesn't change this one too much as all the descriptors used on the original can be found in this beer...with a whiskey glazing obviously. the barrels are much more integrated with the beer as opposed to a BA Wee Heavy where the barrel lead the charge. extremely enjoyable and a very accessible scotch ale.

Poured from a bottle into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter. The beer pours out a dark, dingy, semi-hazy reddish-brown like the color of iced tea. Like a lot of barrel-aged beers, it has very little head clinging to the surface. The nose has some notes of toffee, whiskey, and toasted oak.

The beer is full-bodied and the flavor is sweet and a little boozy. Hints of caramel, honey, rum, and cooked fruit seem to dominate. In the back of the mouth, things warm up without getting too boozy. I don't get much of the vanilla I was expecting, but I do detect the whiskey notes promised by the nose. The beer feels a bit thin in the mouth.

Overall, an interesting beer. It's comparable to Founders Backwoods Bastard, though its flavor is quite different. More cooked fruit and less vanilla-oaky sweetness. I strongly prefer the Founders beer, but this one is not bad at all.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy brown color with an auburn tinge; the modest head quickly fades to a ringlet though it does leave plenty of dots and dashes of lace behind

Smell: Caramel, cinnamon and dried apricots, with only the vaguest hint of the whiskey barrel

Taste: Caramel and cinnamon, up front, with the apricot and strawberry flavors (both fruity and slightly tart) developing in the middle; in the finish, there is a hint of whiskey along with some vanilla, but the effect is suprisingly subtle

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, almost syrupy, with low carbonation

Overall: Having not been much of a fan of the regular version of this ale, I found the subtle treatment of the whiskey barrel really added quite a lot of positives to this version; I had once again forgotten that this is not a classic Wee Heavy, but a "Scotch Style Red Ale" and, as a result, was wondering why it tasted the way it did; still, I quite enjoyed this beer

Thanks, Prost76, for the opportunity

I really liked this beer ... will definitely need to find more.

Not much of a head. Color is copper/amber and a little cloudy. Not sure what to make of the smell ... bananas perhaps, maybe yeast ... really not that pleasant.

Taste is wonderful, but I think you need to like sweet beers to truly enjoy it. There is a slight bite/edge, but it doesn't seem to come from hops ... maybe sour fruit ... it's a nice counter to the sweetness beneath. Overall I get a generic fruit flavor with a hint of vanilla.

Congrats Hoppin' Frog ... Delicious!

Sour and sweet, thanks Johnsense. Honeyish. Dark brown coloured body. Barreling was good. Decent drinkability.
