Consumed 11/10/12

Cheers to Goblinmukey7 for sharing this beer

Appearance: Deep copper, a red orange in the light - Small, off-white head - fades quickly to a minimal cap, small ring, leaves some streaks of lacing

Smell: Rich malts, yet also light and sweet - chewy caramel and tons of toffee - sweet and lightly sugary, yet not as absurdly sweet as Hoppin' Frog's Sweet Evil - some fruits, fruity esters from the yeast - wood and whiskey barrels - some booze in the background

Taste: Sweet, boozy, yet almost balanced - malt extract, caramel malts, caramelized sugar, molasses, and lots of toffee - light fruits, light bananas and apples - lots of yeasty esters - whiskey and wood - sweet, reminiscent of a raw sugar packet, but not in a gross way

Mouthfeel: Borderline full body, somewhat slick and sticky, minimal carbonation, but it works

Overall: Naked times are good times

For an English Barleywine, this is good. On the sweet side, but it's dramatically more pleasant than Sweet Evil. It's a good sipper, but it's arguable whether it's worth the intense price point.

A: Pours very clear, almost no haze. Gold/amber color with no head.
S: Smells kinda like cognac.... weird. Very sweet, butterscotch, caramel, vanilla. A bit of brown sugar and booziness too.
T: SUPER sweet. Almost port-like. Tastes like LME (liquid malt-extract), caramel, toffee, vanilla, coconut. A bit of cherry and apple in there too. Sweet, toasted oak too. Finishes sweet and fruity, almost like orange/caramel candy.
M: Medium/full bodied with almost no carbonation. Sweet and syrupy while drinking.
O: This beer was ok. Taste was too sweet and all over the place.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Goblet. This is the 2012 version.

Appearance: Pours a deep cherry/mahogany color - on the lighter side for a barrel aged barleywine. The beer is filled with floating particles - not sure if this always happens or not, the bottle had been sitting upright for a while.

Smell: Whiskey, molasses, caramel - very sweet. Some oak and perhaps a hint of vanilla. Nice smelling beer.

Taste: This one matches the smell very well - it's very sweet and has flavors of burnt caramel, whiskey, molasses, and raisins and figs. The alcohol is extremely well hidden here.

Mouth-feel: Light carbonation and medium bodied - this one goes down really smooth and definitely has a nice body feel to it. Not sticky at all.

Overall: This is a very tasty beer - the alcohol is very well balanced, and this beer is very sweet. I think the whiskey barrels made a huge contribution to this beer - it is very well rounded.

Black cap, batch 2. Thanks for the replacement bottle Jay!

A: Pours clear light caramel color with pretty much no head. Wispy lace. Tons of specks of sediment in suspension.
S: Strong whiskey, vanilla, caramel, and light milk chocolate. Sweet smelling and boozy overall.
T: Taste very sweet, leather, caramel, tobacco, vanilla, grape, prune, whiskey, and oak. Finishes sweet and fruity, and the aftertaste is full of booze and vanilla.
M: The alcohol is hidden very well, not syrupy at all. Slick and sweet mouthfeel not cloying. Very low carbonation but it goes with the beer. Low fizzy mouthfeel, slightly boozy but not warm.
O: Really really good. Nothing wrong with this beer except that its maybe a bit on the sweet side. Nothing a little age wouldn't keep under control. Thanks again jbck109!

I aged this one for about year and was rewarded nicely. Poured into a glass from the bottle, the ale was a golden color with a slight white head that left lacing along the sides of the glass. The beer had a pleasant boozy, malty aroma with hints of vanilla hidden in the aroma. In the initial taste, one gets a nutty, fruity, citrus sensation with hints of vanilla and dark fruit and vanilla in the background. There is a virtual explosion of taste here because there is so much going on. While one gets the warming sensation from the alcohol, it is well masked. The warming continues into the aftertaste with nutty and fruity sensations continuing. By far, this was the winner at a recent testing and my personal favorite from Hoppin' Frog.

A-Clear ruby amber, not much carbonation or head at all.

S-Caramel, molasses, oak and darker fruits.

T-Caramel, molasses, sweet oak, mild darker fruits and some coconut.

M-Lighter, no much carbonation, smooth though.

O-One of the the better Barrel Aged barleywines, not as good as Sucaba but the alcohol is well hidden but some more barrel notes would improve the beer.

black cap bottled. poured into taster.

A: pours very clear. copper in color. not too bright.

S: raisins, dark fruit. more of an oak than a bourbon aroma. a little bit of vanilla. more of a toffee aroma than a caramel. very sweet.

T: dark cherries, very fruity. not a ton of fusels. toasted grains. surprisingly mellow. booze comes out in the finish. tons of residual sweetness. a bit under-attenuated.

M: super thick. carb is low which makes it even richer. drinks similar to cough syrup.

D: a bit heavy, but good flavor. slightly thick. besides the under-attenuated nature of this brew, it has a great nose and good flavor. HF has a good thing going here, they should try and use a different strand of yeast, or two yeasts, and get this thing a bit lower. alcohol heat is there, but not over the top. if research serves correct, this was bottled around June '12, so not a very old bottle. I would say good to drink now cellar'ers.
