Poured from a bomber into a New Belgium tulip. Appearance is very black with the low carbonation of a B.A. beer and a thin tan head that quickly dissipates. Nose has strong bourbon and roasty notes, some chocolate, faint vanilla, and a woody touch to it as well. It really is a great smelling beer.
There is a faint, malty, vanilla-like sweetness in the front of the tongue, followed by big whiskey, chocolate, coffee, and roasted notes at mid-palate. The alcohol makes its presence known, but in this beer I find it nice and warming and not at all boozy. It's a bit rough around the edges and has a fair amount of character. The low carbonation gives the beer a slick, oily-like feel.
Despite the barrel-aging, this beer maintains the big bitter roasted notes of the original BORIS. The barrel-aging was enough to impart some complementary characteristics to the beer's flavor profile, but not enough to sweeten the beer substantially or compromise the complexity of the flavor. I especially like that little bit of heat that you get from the alcohol. I hope it doesn't fade too much with age. The beer is not as drinkable as say, CBS, but it is a wonderful sipper and a worthwhile companion on a snowy night. I will definitely buy this again, especially since it's not very difficult for me to get.

Bought this on my trip to Chicago in April. Just now getting around to opening it.
Poured out of the bottle, with a black cap, a thick motor oil black into a Stone RIS glass. Thin head with little retention. Scent of the bourbon hits my nose, but that's all I get, I have a terrible nose. The taste has the bourbon burst up front with a bit of a hop presence. Then bring on the oats . . . the mouth just shuts down and goes dryer than a desert. A wonderful complexity and very well balanced. No two flavors are stronger than the other. Mouthfeel is perfectly bodied for the style and dry.
