Staring at the beer and not the glass you're pouring into is NOT a good idea. This stuff isn't going to come out easy!

The pour is deep dark brown and an agressive pour results in the beer coming out of the bottle even back lit being near black as night. A good sign! Carbonation is lacking though a swirl will leave a nice bubbly coating on the sides. Not nearly the alcohol legs I'd expect and there isn't much viscosity to be seen.

Very sweet and mellow Russian Imperial. Soft dark chocolate, roasted malts, a hint of perhaps lactose or just caramel and bread, and it finishes with a nice RIS style hop bitterness.

Unlike the aroma the flavor here is aggressive and in your face. I'm really interested in the hops used here, this beer finishes bitter and dry. No fruity esters or citrus hops, just sharp biting hops. The roast is mellow chocolate, almost milk chocolate. There is a lingering coffee flavor at the end.

I'm a bit surprised on the mouth feel. This beer isn't well carbonated nor is it really thick and creamy, but they seem to have found a place in the middle that I've never experienced and frankly works rather well. There's still some alcohol bite on this one.

60 IBUs were never more appreciated. This is a beat of a stout and very possibly the best I've had in a while. I really don't like the price on the barrel aged version, but I really am interested after this one.

A stellar imperial stout and worthy of the 2008 BABF gold medal. If they upped the body a hair this might be hands down the best Russian Imperial on the market and at 10 a bomber it is sadly priced competitively with the likes of Stone.

A: truly pours like motor oil; got a thin dark brown head; no real lace

S: rich smooth espresso and cocoa - bittersweet dark chocoloate

T: the smoothness of the oats makes this a particularly decadent and chocolatey-tasting take on the RIS - sweet and chewy dark chocolate, black espresso dryness in the background

M: very smotth, very creamy, bittersweet finish, full, dense body

O: I can see why this is a top 250 beer - a rich, treat of a RIS
