Aged in Bourbon whiskey barrels to add a wonderful complexity to our massive American Double Imperial Stout. This barrel aging imparts a memorable buttery, vanilla-like, and savory whiskey character, making this one of our most complex beers we've ever brewed. Another testament to our hard work and dedication in bringing our customers the very best.

Gorgeous pour. Beautiful nice head that sticks a bit. Deep brown color.
No noticeable smell.
Delicious. Smooth, not overly sweet, which can happen on some BA stouts.
Outstanding beer.

And we're back with more from Hoppin' Frog. This seems to be a relatively straightforward beer by their standards; no crazy barrel aging or anything, just a standard BBA RIS. Regardless, I'm still excited to try another one from them. Let's dig in
Pours almost completely pitch black with 2 fingers of frothy dark tan head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing
It has about the aggression you'd expect a RIS to have in the nose, and I'm perfectly content with that. I'm picking up on aromas of cacao nib, burnt toast, dark roast coffee, molasses, burnt caramel, black licorice, earthy bourbon, charred oak, and black cherry
In taste it's a lot of the same, but eventually settles into something sweeter than I expected which is quite unique. On the front end of the sip I'm tasting dark toast, molasses, cacao nib, charred oak, black cherry, burnt caramel, vanilla, black licorice, earthy hops, and light bourbon. The swallow brings notes of dark toast, burnt caramel, charred oak, burnt coffee beans, black licorice, black cherry, earthy hops, vanilla, light fudge, and raisin
A medium full body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a slick yet sharp beer. Finishes bone dry with a balanced bitterness fading into a nice sweetness
This is damn good stuff. Even when they're going a more "traditional" route, they still kill it

Only complaint is there is NO head on this pour. Everything else looks great. Sticky, oily lace fingers on the glass. Deep, rich, near black liquid.
Chocolatey, bourbon goodness. Sweet up front and somewhat heavy on the chocolate aftertaste.
Feels thick and oily as it looks.
Pretty good stuff. More of a desert brew do to it's heaviness and sweetness.

Revisited March 07th, 2024
Pours a thick, dark mahogany color, appears black and opaque in the glass; thick, brown head, long lasting. Deep aromas of roasted and charred grains infused with notes of cocoa; brownies; a hint of cherry. Outstanding flavor; rich chocolate notes with a touch of whiskey; dark pitted dried fruit elements; charred grain bitterness. Heavy mouthfeel; thick and viscous; nice underlying boozy warmth.
There is enough about this iteration of the beer to make me notch up all my subjective scores by a quarter point. The relatively higher ABV, while not hidden per se, doesn't overpower the already massive base beer. Rich and complex. Hoppin' Frog did a fine job with this edition of the beer.

Deep, dark brown body, opaque; thin yet lasting light brown head, creamy; thick, sticky sheets of foam create a curtain down the glass. Outstanding roasted grain aroma; cocoa; coffee. Rich, dark malt flavor infused with a bold touch of whiskey; vanilla; a suggestion of cinnamon. Heavy body; mildly coarse on the palate; some residual sugar sweetness offset with alcohol dryness.
A nice, robust barrel-aged imperial stout.
ABV: 10.5% (assumed); pouring temperature: 43 °F; canning info: unreadable

No canning date. Best by date is 12/29/23. Poured black with ruby edges at 56°; dark tan fizzy head, poor cap retention leaves an island of micro dots and a thin ring at best; small spots of lace on agitation; medium legs sheet the glass. Oaky whiskey and sweet dark fruit nose; bitter roast malt; somewhat boozy exhale; some vanilla as it warms. Entry is whiskey and bitter roast malt followed by chocolate malt, dark chocolate, oaky vanilla, dark cherries, and licorice; bitter roast finish. Slick, silky feel; medium body, moderate minus carbonation; slight warmth from 10.5% abv; dry wooden tongue coating. Overall, more bitterness than I want even in an RIS; long bitter roast linger (not as bitter as DORIS base); the BBAging adds layers of flavor to this otherwise very bitter stout.

From the 16 oz can in a snifter via the Little Lady's daughter and Jamie---Cheers!
This mighty brew pours a dark coal black with a nice head of brown foam that
settles to a thick ring, thin dusty layer, and sports nice lacing. Nose of dark chocolate,
char, brulee, dark roasted coffee, dark fruit notes, whiskey, oak, and touches of
vanilla. Flavors hit the mark! Dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, earthy malts,
whiskey, spicy rye touches, vanilla, leather, tobacco, and deep roasted malts with
hints of cream. Nice mouth feel; full body, smooth, rich, coating, subtle carbonation
that gives some lift, warming, and finishing with a wonderful bitter malt note.
Overall----Da' Frog is Boss! Awesome as always!
Cheers

Pours near black, light 1/4" tan head that quickly fizzes out, light ring left behind. Nose is Australian licorice, blackstrap molasses, charred oak, leather, and vanilla; based on smell, anticipate this tending towards a savory, even saline drink rather than a sweet one. Taste essentially follows - there's very little trace sugar remaining here - lots of salty licorice and molasses, along with a nutty flavor, almost like unsweetened peanut butter. Whiskey notes linger far into the finish as part of an extended aftertaste along with some salty and brackish notes. Carbonation is light but present, and while the mouthfeel is rich, it isn't chewy. This is an aggressive and complex stout that showcases the barrel without letting sugary adjuncts get in the way. It is assertive and even raw at times, but a real pleasure to drink - wish HF still had a distro footprint in my area.

12 oz bottle, 2019 vintage, poured into a snifter at 55 degrees F:
L - molasses color with a dark chocolate head that lingered only around the edges
S - bourbon, molasses
T - great blend of bourbon, malt, molasses, coffee
F - thick mouthfeel with minimal carbonation
O - great beer that has improved with age in my opinion

Black with a biscuit-colored head with an irregular grain and little hold. The scent is very greedy, chocolate, caramel, coffee, hint of licorice, vanilla, dates and dehydrated plum, herbaceous tones, whiskey. On the palate it travels on the olfactory sensations and in the finish emerge rich toasting, ash and hopping on herbaceous and earthy paths. The
contribution of aging in whiskey barrels is gentle and not too aggressive, making the drink deeper and more complex. The body is important, soft and round, the carbonation is low.
