Just visited San Diego for the first time last week and I made this my go-to bottle shop based on the reviews here and wasn't disappointed!
I don't know the market very well or what the competition's shelves look like, but I'd imagine this place probably has one of the better selections in SD.
What went above and beyond for me was the owner, Freddy. I love places that offer good customer service and he delivered. He greeted me as soon as I entered the door, when there were a couple people in there, he was offering samples of a beer he was excited about and helped me out with the local selections.
It looks like a high volume shop which is great for the freshness of the selection. I bought almost entirely IPAs (hey, I was in Cali...when in Rome right?) and they all were nice and fresh.
One key thing is that if you want the hard to find selection, you have to ask about it. He keeps the limited release beers in the back. Also if you are looking for Pliny, just ask when he's getting it in. It moves quickly, but he seems to get a weekly delivery of it and you just have to swing by then.

I used to live right up the road from this place and moved to Texas about 7 years back, (sigh). Upon a vacation to San Diego I looked up the primo place to buy all the west coast faves and Beverages4less hit my radar.
I dragged my wife and kid there after a hike of Cowles Mtn and was not disappointed. Upon entering, Fred welcomed us into his beer mecca. From that point forward, it was a blur due to the massive selection of beers unavailable in TX or most of the country for that matter. Mother Earth was there which was cool as i just had 2 of their beers the night before and was impressed.
Bottomline, Fred hooked me up w/some of the hardest to find brews at VERY reasonable prices. This place is legit world class and caters to BA's.

It's a basic liquor store set up, but when you walk in and start looking at the inventory, you notice you're not just at another corner street market. With shelves after shelves of delicious beer from all over the world, you're guaranteed to find something that you've been looking for for a while.
Come in on a Friday and Freddy will be pouring some of his favorite beers. Sometimes there will even be a representative from one of the craft breweries in the area pouring their beer.
Like with many great beer stores around here, it's all about who you know. Often times owners don't like giving up their prime beers to just anyone. I know that sounds kind of ridiculous at first, but it's not hard to "pay your dues" when it comes to finding awesome beer already on the shelves at this store.
Go on Facebook and Like the Beverages 4 Less page and they'll keep you updated on the newest arrivals. Freddy has even been nice enough to put a bottle aside for me, so that I can go over and pick it up after I get off work.
From the highly coveted beers back east, to the finest craft beers in San Diego, they've got it all. Not to mention all of the imported specialties from around the world. Obviously it's not always available all the time, good beer flies off the shelves, but it's regularly showing up in deliveries. If I want something, this place has it or can get it for me.

I love this store. Freddy is a pleasure to deal with, and he always gets me the beer I need. He also ships beer and the beer always arrives fast and in perfect condition. They have tons of beer that I can't get in my locality. Go on their website and facebook page to see what's in and place your order today. Thanks for everything Freddy.

I recently had the occasion to be in San Diego on a business trip. Now, if you like "west coast style" IPAs, this is like making a pilgrimage...the Holy Grail area of IPAs. You can get many good west coast IPAs in my state (thankfully) but there are many more that i've never seen, and cannot get. Further, when you do get them in the stores here, they can be 3 months (and often more) old when just placed on the shelf. I decided I should hit up some bottle shops while there.
I visited several, and not only did Beverages 4 Less have a good selection (about on par with the other better bottle shops in the area) but definitely superior service. The place isn't that much to look at...think your typical liquor store. However, Fred is obviously very knowledgeable about beer, and willing to go way beyond the call of duty when it comes to customer service.
Example: Have you ever went into a bottle shop and after discussing beers you might like, the owner walks over to the cooler and pulls out a 22 oz bottle, opens it, and lets you sample it to find out? Well, that happened to me. That was quite surprising, to enjoy a free beer on the house. Also, I purchased 4 or 5 beers, but Fred had no problem selling me a beer shipping container large enough to also hold all the bottles that I'd bought from his competitors. Oh, and he even gave me a heads up on how old the various beers were on his shelf, in case I really cared about the freshness.
Prices: Well, I don't drink the kind of beer I do, and pay for shipping, etc, because I'm price sensitive. So, I may not be the best person to judge prices. However, I sure don't think paying $8-9 a bottle for beers that I absolutely CANNOT get because they aren't even distributed in my state is that much (Sculpin, Pliny, Blind Pig, Alpine, Stone special releases, Knee Deep Brewing, etc). Maybe if I lived in California, and could get it locally, I'd think different.
Finally, I've had occasion to also order online from beverages4lessinc.com. I got the email about what was in stock, sent a request, and got a response within about 30 minutes. The transaction was fast and easy, and he personally called me when ready to complete the transaction. Again, fast, easy, and Fred obviously is trying to stock those beers that are not available many/most other places. That's while I'll keep ordering online from this establishment.

I have been coming here for a couple years now. The selection is great, the service is very friendly and the location is very convenient for me.
They have a great array of bottles from local breweries as well as other breweries from all over the world. The owner, Fred, is very knowledgeable and will give you honest recommendations. He will even go so far as to get things for you that he may not regularly carry should you ask.
Fred also carries a number of the more commonly used supplies for homebrewing. He has WhiteLabs yeasts and a variety of hops. He has the best prices in town on grain. Two-Row for a dollar a pound and all of the other grain is only $1.59 a pound which is on average a $0.40/pound (or more) savings over other homebrew shops on their specialty grains. Freddy brews too so he can answer questions that you may have regarding equipment or ingredients.
One of the only shops in town that consistently stocks Alpine Beer Co. offerings which is worth the trip for that alone.

My name is Scott Feutz and Today I was proudly told to "leave my store" by the ownerFreddy, and called a stupid Redneck. It came about because He was yelling about politics and I happened to point out that he might be incorrect. He got mad and said I "never listen to anyone and that I know everything". At that I started to laugh, because he just described himself. At that point he assaulted Me ( a Disabled Vet) by throwing his phone at me. He then told me to get out and as I was leaving he tried to spit on me. He also said that he hated MOST Americans because we think we need to get involved in everybody's problems.I know he is a self proclaimed Iraqi-American and probably has traveled more than myself but that doesn't mean I am a stupid American . I would call for any Servicemen and Women to boycott his store because he has no respect for their Service or what they have done for him. I went there for his weekly Beer tastings and for supplies to brew..Not anymore.I'll go to BNS Brewing

Beverages4less definitely brings in a wide variety of opinions on the matter. They usually can be broken down between locals (bad) and non locals (good). Myself, being a native born San Diegan, but who has moved long ago and is now non local, thought it would be a good idea to stop by this place and check it out for myself. Its pretty much in between my Alpine lunch and trip to Alesmith, so why not I thought?
Its a craphole exterior. Looks corner markety where you would expect bulletproof glass and lots of Phillies Blunts varities and malt liquor.
Quality: They/he carries plenty of great beers, high quality beers. What is not high quality here are the storage conditions and pricing. Lots of warm shelves, dust. Some things get brought out of the back. There doesn't seem to be prices on anything. Thats troubling for me, as its a way for business to often charge different prices (which is akin to the used car salesmen comparison).
The service was great. Freddie engaged in a lively conversation. He brought out some beers from the back. He seemed pretty cool. He pushed some of his out of distribution stuff at crazy high prices. That don't bother me. I always appreciate the option, even if I'd have to be dumb as shit to buy them at said requested price.
The selection was great, there's tons of beers in here.
So overall, its a mixed bag.
