Boags St George

A = Poured a golden yellow with a thin foam head that quickly dissapates.

S = Little to no smell. Slight hoppy smell with a tinge of citrus.

T = Inital sweet sultana flavour with a slight hop bitterness. I was expecting worse but this wasnt bad.

M = Moderately carbonated. Nothing special.

D = Cheap and drinkable. Not bad.

From bottle, pours a clear pale straw yellow colour with a finger of white coloured head. Aroma slight citrus, not much else. Taste grain, citrus, sweet. Not bad.

Appearance - 2.5
Pours a finger of loose white head that quickly reduced to a thin layer over a clear, straw coloured body, leaving no lace on its way down.

Smell - 1.0
Extremely unappealing aroma; sulphury with a little corn.

Taste - 2.0
Very little flavour; faint grain and husk, corn and a hint of citrussy hops in the finish. Slightly sweet, bitterness is barely perceptible. Bland and inoffensive.

Mouthfeel - 2.0
"Brewed to be less filling". Perhaps that's why the beer is approaching flat. Watery at first, a little zing of carbonation in the finish.

Drinkability - 3.0
Easy to drink a lot of, a very sessionable beer for someone who does not like the taste of real beer. Boring.

OVERALL - 2
A cut below the rest of the James Boag range, and to my mind, a macro/adjuct lager, not a euro pale lager. The only reason I can see for Boags making this beer is to try to steal some of the Carlton Cold and TED market - people looking for a beer in a clear bottle that has as little taste as possible.

A: 1 finger head, pale straw yellow, head retention not bad, pretty lacing. Carbonation average.

S: A little sulphury, skunky...& citrus...not too interesting

T: Creamy, little citrus...also finished with a herbal bite that I just cannot put my finger on.

M: Medium, creamy, smooth carbonation

D: Tell you what this wasn't that bad at all. If only I could pick the aftertaste: something from the spice rack...feel free to shoot me mail to enlighten!!! Cheers

A rough pour produced a whispy pure white head that has good retention and excellent lacing. It's unfortunate how watery the body appears.

The smell is near non existent, with mild cirtus hops and not much more.

The taste is far less fulller than I had hoped, but it still tastes relatively fine for what it is I guess. Mild citrus, and again not much more.

The aftertaste is bland and watery, which while make it less than a great beer, makes it very easy to drink.

A: pale yellow/straw
S: subtle... sulfur, citrus... not appealing
F: kinda like a watered-down Corona & lime. It's light & refreshing, and good for the un-demanding palate. No bitterness
M: big effervescence, light & dry, crisp, quenching
D: comparing it to other "dry" beers, it's not too bad. I think the light citrus note gives it a different slant

Light gold effervescent and a densely packed head
Smell was vaguely spicey tending towards fennel
This is a distinctive beer. (I tasted it blind and correctly said I hadnt drunk before ) This is not by way of demonstrating my competence but demonstates the unique flavour.
The flavour is aniseed ( the label says citrus and maybe just maybe some dried lemon peel starts to taste like aniseed).
I dont know if this is good or not
it IS different and it is not unpleasant
Try it be objective

boags tends to be my shitty beer of choice when im hard up for cash. strongarm, draught even the premium sometimes find their way down my throat if the going is tough. and while they dont always get their seasonal beers right, they are still ok and i always give them some points for trying anyhow. then they produce this mess. when i saw this beer advertised, at first i thought it could actually be alright. how wrong i was.

one look at the color had me thinking one thing. urine sample. the head smelled and looked like beaten egg whites. plenty of bubble action, but then by this point thats usually a sign for bad hops. and so it was. apart from the egg whites ive mentioned, this smelled like lemon squash that had been left out in the sun for a few weeks. also had the grotty smell of pride of ringwood pellets. which means its going to feel and taste like youve drank bathroom cleaner. well, lemon bathroom cleaner, because there was actually something citrus in there and was a little bit sweet. pretty putrid stuff, but then i have to say, id probably drink this if i was off my brains and only had one beer left. doesnt make it any good tho.

my biggest problem with this beer tho, is its called a premium beer, which means premium price. and all you get is something that is better of going down the sinkhole. a disgraceful effort from boags, and hopefully not a sign of things to come from this brewer.

Well, it poured a very very pale straw color with no head whatsoever.. I even noticed that there was no head forming early on and ended up dumping the bottle into the glass to try to form some...nothing. Well, a very thin layer that disappeared in seconds. Smells slightly of...yeast and esters? It's not a pleasant smell, good thing there isn't much of it. The taste is unpleasant, almost oxidized. Slightly sweet, slightly sickly. The mouthfeel isn't too bad, a little heavy, some creaminess. Not enough to make up for everything else. I won't be buying this again, and might recommend my friends avoid it.

Why did Boag's have to make this? Probably because they are pwned by CUB and the company wants another weak beer with a bronze-embossed-looking logo on its label, for people unwilling to drink Carlton Draught because of their superstitions. So many ignorant Australians believe that one of either Tooheys New, Carlton, VB, Carlton Cold, XXXX or Fosters is superior to the others, when in fact they are all so depressingly similar, the choice only exists to make it look like there is variety in the market. This beer is just like any of those listed above, only possibly aimed at the Extra Dry market (for clubs etc, hence the colourless bottle).

As for the beer itself: it's a very pale yellow, fat stupid bubbles galore, with lacing and a head that looks like detergent.

The label says there's a 'distinctive citrus hop flavour to impart a less bitter, more refreshing style of premium beer'. Garbage. That's not what I call a citrus aroma. Granted, the taste is a little sweet, but all that's present in the aroma is a very faint, decidedly uncitrusy chemical adjunct/weak hop character.

Taste: Slightly unusual, compared to Carlton and the rest, but not necessarily good. Same dodgy Australian beer effect, but a very slightly lingering sweetness on the centre of the tongue. Nothing else notable, this beer is crap.

Nothing special about mouthfeel or drinkability. Average price and drinkability for what it is: definitely more of an American style Macro Lager rather than a Euro Pale lager, the latter of which tend to have some modicum of effort put into them, particularly in terms of grassy hop character as well as ABV etc. St George is one lousy beer by a brewer who is usually not too bad for Australia.

Appearance:
Weak, watery yellow, with a thin loose head which disappears into film quickly. Looks very unappealing.

Nose:
Rather citrussy. It smells rather like a cider. The citrus is most prominent, but it's not the nice citrus you often get from hops. It's almost like a sour fermentation, like it's off. It's alright, but not what you expect, and I wonder whether it's not meant to smell like it does.

Taste:
Weak, watery. It's kinda what I expect from an Australian "premium" beer. Take a rancid crap Australian beer and water it down. It's drinkable, but so's water. Water's also cheaper. Glad I didn't pay for this one.
Mouthfeel is weak, hey, what a surprise, like water.

A very shabby effort.
