Bottled, served in a snifter, purchased on 5/14/13 at House of Wine in Marietta, Ohio. Shared this with the wife.
Motor oil, no light penetrates, thin half finger ecru head with Moderate retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of sweet malt, dark chocolate, flaked oats, and great earthy roasted coffee. Taste reminds me very much of Founders Breakfast Stout, but this beer has a little more coffee earthiness, is dank, and has a bit of grit in the mouthfeel which I am digging. A touch of tobacco, leather, this beer is complex. Low carbonation is fitting, chewy. Nice touch of warming alcohol.
Fantastic oatmeal stout, this was a very pleasant surprise. I think this beer will do very well and may get taking away on the hype train if people seek this out.

A - Pours as advertised, a completely opaque, jet black color. Not entirely viscous, but very dark. Small, 1 finger, dark brown head.
S - Incredibly amounts of roasted coffee, sweet chocolate, and dark fruits/raisins. Very tasty smell. Almost mouth-watering
T - Again, tons of coffee--almost mocha-like. Follows quickly with very sweet chocolate, fruity in nature almost, finishing with a bitter hop bite and more coffee and dark chocolate.
M - Incredibly creamy and smooth.
Overall - Wow. This one is a game. A truly superb imperial stout. Right up there with the best of them.

A: 12 oz bottled Poured into a 16oz snifter, Although I've had it on tap poured into a pint glass as well. It's a black to brown body with a light brown head to it . The head after a moderate pour was about one fingers worth.
S: Chocolate, Mocha Coffee, Roasted nuts Cocoa Powder, slight boozey smell in the back.
T: Just like the smell, you get a big hit of Mocha in there and finish off with a the roasted malt flavor and a light taste from the alcohol warming.
M: Moderately thick and coats the mouth, which is to be expected from this type of beer.
Overall: This is easily my favorite Ohio stouts and arguably my all time favorite of the breakfast stout style (non-bourbon aged). It's right up there with Founders Breakfast Stout for sure, it'd be interesting to have a tasting of both of them back to back. This beer along with Amarillo Brillo and Maumee Bay's IPA just went to 12oz bottles a few weeks ago which was truly thrilling, and long awaited. I hope they bottle some of more of their brewery exclusives here in the near futue.

First off, I'm a stout lover and very hard to please! With that said, this is one of the best stouts I have ever had. Right up there with Founders Breakfast Stout which is hard to do. I tried this at the Big Beers and Barleywine. I had never heard of Maumee brewery before and I'm sure glad I stopped and tried it because it was awesome. Planning on making a 3 hour trip to their Microbrewery in November to fill a few growlers of this. This is a must try if you have a chance.

Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout
Maumee Bay Brewing Company
Style: American Double / Imperial Stout
ABV: 8.60 %
LOOK: Pitch black, off white tan head. Plenty of lacing, brown lacing at that.
SMELL: Chocolate, oats, coffee, and roasted/peat smoked malts.
TASTE: Decadent chocolate, bitter coffee rounds, rich roasted malt flavors all upfront. There is a good balance between the cocoa sweetness and coffee bitterness. Oats lend to the smoothness of feel and richness in taste.
FEEL: Silky smooth, creamy, low carbonated, robust finish.
OVERALL: A high quality coffee stout from Maumee Bay. Definitely recommended.
