A brown hue with butterscotch complexions when held up to light. Tan chunky head dissipates quickly leaving spotty lacing that retains itself well.

Nice aromas of fig and hazlenut, with a good hop background, rich caramel malt, sweet bready hints as well.

A bold acidic beer, big hazlenut with other malty flavors, burnt roasted caramel, with a gingery taste, fig paste type of finish that lasts a good few seconds.

Mouth takes a hit from the pungent acidity but otherwise pretty drinkable.

This beer poured a very dark brown, almost black color and formed an off white head that slowly faded. The aroma was of malt, coffee and caramel. The flavor was of malt, with a elements of both the coffee and the caramel. The body was rather light for the style and the finish a touch bittersweet. Not a bad brown, but not great either.

I worked hard to pour a decent on this beer but it didn't do much good. There are a few wisps and a ring of foam. It's a very dark brown but fairly clear when I hold it to the light.

Pleasant malty sweet aroma.

Sweet caramel with a well rounded roasted malt finish.

light to moderately carbonated with a medium body.

This is an easy drinking pleasant tasting brown.

A cloudy dark brown out of the bottle. Head was minimal, as was the lacing. Neither one stuck around very long. Smell was of faint coffee and nut, (roasted malts) and a slight touch of sugary sweetness. Taste was of roasted coffee, spice and malt sweetness. Low bitterness i thought. Very drinkable. Carbonation was mild. Mouthfeel was medium bodied and went down very smooth. Very nice brown ale, less nuttier than others ive had but very nice.

Pours out to a semi-hazy very dark mahogany, forming a small dark beige head with no retention or lacing. Carbonation is mild and requires a hefty pour to even achieve a head. Aroma is very "beer-y" with notes of herbal English hops, amber and chocolate malts, a touch of caramel and caramelized sugar, vanilla. Mouthfeel is sharp considering the carbonation, and the medium body tastes denser than it actually is. Taste is also very English...light molasses, brown sugar, herbal English hops...lingering notes of tobacco, coffee and touches of leather in the woody finish. Bold and assertive for a brown. Thank god, no diacetyl, and alcohol is undetectable. Cleanly fermented.

Another solid brew from the Dark Horse dudes. Most everybody else would call this a porter. Rich and filling. Recommended.

Nice beer bottle brown color, nearly opaque with rusty edges, thin tan cap adorns the top A thin collar keeps and the lacing is spongy in strings. Nose is mild with a slight roasty malt and a bit of caramel and toffee. Taste brings out much more, thank goodness for that, and whats there is quite nice for a brown. Well rounded taste, mild and foregoing, lengthy and bold. Roasty, husky, earthen malts speak easy across the palate, moderately sweet with a dark toffee tang. Some astringencies are present, but not eagerly so, just right I think. Feel is good with about a medium body and a peppy carbonation. Lightly dry roasty touch slips into the finish. A fine brown ale to be sure, not as sweet as others which was good. More of a straight up roastyness with a small earthy, raw grains taste that's nice.

Re-review: This one has improved substantially. Pours out to a nice, copper to brown in the glass with a huge head. Smell is that of malt and is quite pleasant. The taste is that of roasted malt, almost porter-like, but slightly sweet, with a gentle dose of hops. Very drinkable and a vast improvement from last year. This has vaulted itself into a top "Brown Ale" for me.

Original Review: 3/6/03 - 2.5/5.0 Poured out to a muddied brown in the glass with virturally no head. Aroma is that of light malt. Taste was disappointing. This was a very thin brown ale with nearly no carbonation. I am thinking it might've been a bad bottle. Not as complex as Newcastle even, which is very thin in its own right. I will have to resample this one, but overall, it was disappointing.

This beer poured very dark, darker than most brown ales pour and was quite low in carbonation. The smell was semi-sweet but that was about it. The taste was simply an upfront maltiness with nothing to back it up. I can't find any hops or alcohol or yeast or ANYTHING other than a caramel flavored malt. Too thin, too bland. This should be a macro.
