Dark Horse Perkulator Coffee Dopplebock
12 oz brown bottle
Served in a 20 oz tulip glass

Pours a dark tannish brown with a creamy head on top. Interesting trails of sticky lacings cling to the side glass.

Strong whiffs of coffee grinds and chocolate.

Chewy chocolate malt base, caramel sweetness with intense flavors of roasted coffee. Perhaps a touch of brown sugar. Heavy malt flavors with moderate carbonation.

(copied from blog - written January 5, 2013)

Appearance – Pours into the glass an opaque reddish brown with a staggering thin white head.
Smell – Smells of vanilla and coffee and a slight caramel or brown sugar sweetness.
Taste – Definitely able to slightly taste the high alcohol content but that taste could also be attributed to the coffee beans.

The thing I love about this beer is that it reminds me of drinking an iced Irish coffee. It is a coffee dopplebock as stated on the label so obviously coffee is the driving force behind the flavor but as I said before you can slightly taste alcohol, then you add some vanilla cream and sugar and there you have it.

A: Slightly hazy, reddish brown with a light brown head. Very little lace and retention.

S: Obviously plenty of coffee in the nose. Some roasted malt and smoke and wood but mostly all coffee.

T: As in the nose, this is all coffee. Has the sweet, roasted malt presence of a doppelbock but most nuances of the style are masked by coffee. A slightly burnt coffee flavor but it isn't unpleasant. A bit more of the style comes out as it warms.

M: Super smooth, good coffee flavor, and the true essence of the style comes out when it warms. So let it warm up.

O: Pretty solid as a coffee beer but somewhat lacking as a double bock. But what would you expect with the addition of coffee? Still, an enjoyable beer.

I am not sure it's "beer" the label says 'malt beverage' so I assume there is some technical difference. (soory I'm not that smart.

Nice light fizzy texture, crisp, good coffeee taste and aroma.. missing actual beer tastes though, but it's quite a nice drinking beverage.

Drinking this one on a nice stormy evening, after stuffing my face with some chicken tacos. Listening to some hardcore punk ... Drip of Lies.

Glass: Port City "Craft Pub" pint glass.

Appearance: Dark reddish brown. It looks like rust. Extremely hazy, with light still able to penetrate when hold up to a light source. A fairly aggressive pour produced little head, about a half a finger which quickly dissipated. No lacing to speak of.

Smell: Coffee, a bit of chocolate, underlying sweetness like that found in Belgian quads. I get that impression mostly from the yeast, perhaps, although there may be some dark fruit and caramelized aroma to be found deep within. The coffee smell seems a bit artificial almost, like those found in many coffee flavored beers.

Taste: Coffee comes through first, and certainly sticks around on the tongue long after swallowing. Some sweetness is there, as well as a bit of a bit of breadiness perhaps. Really though, the coffee is most prevalent, and even as a coffee drinker I find it to be a bit much. Would prefer more of those classic dopplebock flavors.

Mouthfeel: It leaves a definite resin like stickiness on my tongue. Lips feel sticky as well. Medium carbonation and medium body. Slightly dry finish.

Overall: Eh, it's good if I am in the mood for an iced coffee made with somewhat stale tasting coffee. The sweetness and malts are great, but they take a definite backseat to the coffee.
