22 oz. bottle poured into a DFH signature glass. Bottled on February 7, 2013.

A - Pours a dark auburn-brown with a thick, two finger tuft of off-white head. The head dies slowly and leaves behind a curtain of lacing.

S - Smells of molasses and brown sugar. Sweet and bitter with a meaty smoke character, almost leathery. Peat moss and raisins contribute to the diverse and interesting aroma.

T - Starts with caramel and a mellow apple-plum fruitiness. Toasted mesquite wood follows with a BBQ smoky sweetness. There is hardly any bitterness, but it is not overly sweet either. The alcohol is well hidden by the complex flavors.

M - Awesome mouthfeel. Thick with a savory fullness and great carbonation. The alcohol is an afterthought, despite the 11.4% billing.

O - This is a unique beer that highlights the smoke flavor in a different way than most other beers. There is a chewy, meaty, smoke character that sets this apart form the original version. Excellent complexity and drinkability. At under $6 for a bomber, this is a bargain beer that I hope Stone makes again.

Poured a deep amber, but with very little head that didn't stick around. Rings of lacing were left down the glass. It looks pretty good, but more head would be beautiful. Scents of burnt sugar and smokey wood. Flavor begins with a hit of sweet and roast malt moving into smokey flavors with some hop bitterness and ending with a bitter and smokey aftertaste. Also a pronounced hit of alcohol and alcohol burn. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and sticky, with moderate carbonation. Big, abrasive and intense, like every Stone beer. It's pretty good, and I'll probably pick up a second bottle to age, but I've had better.

Pours out a red-amber. Barely any head lingers. Just a ring off bubbles around the glass. Nose is boozy, hoppy, with a slight hint of smoke in the background. Flavor is very sweet and boozy up front. I get a touch of smoke in the middle. Finish is very bitter with some lingering alcohol. Mouthfeel is smooth, low carbonation. This needs some time to mellow. I think the booze is a little rough, and the hops could use a little time to chill just to mesh with everything else. I must say, that slight hint of smoke in the flavor makes this more drinkable than this year's normal OG. Gonna put a bottle of this away for a long while.

Appearance: Red-orange, lots of particles, big head. Pretty.

Smell: Big smoky ham aroma.

Taste: Moderate caramel sweetness followed by a lot of smoke. Lasting smoky finish. As it warms up a hint of citrus shows up before the smoky finish.

Overall: This is more like it. I tried the Belgo Old Guardian a couple years ago and it was a boozy mess. The oak smoked version gives the big malt base of the barleywine and piles on the big smoke of a rauchbier. Tasty stuff if you like smoked beers.

Bottled 1/16/13.

Pours a clear dark orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, smoked malt, beef jerky, oak, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with smoke, oak, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of smoke and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the beef jerky aspect I am getting out of this one is a bit off putting.
