Poured from 22oz bottle into pint glass.
A: Pours a clear golden hue with a thin white head that quickly dissipates.
S: Citrus and pine hops... hint of sweet caramel malt.
T: Citrus, astringent herbal, and pine resin hop notes. Faint backbone of mild caramel malt. With warming, a note of honey emerges.
M: Light body. Faint sweetness is overpowered by strong hop elements (dry, bitter, astringent).
D: Good sessionability. Fairly straightforward and hop-strong. Would best be enjoyed with food.

Beautiful, clean, smooth. What I imagine an IPA should be, though to be honest an IPA is not my first choice of beers. Maybe it's just the fact that I drank this beer after a short run, but damn this is a good drink.

ST - I enjoyed this beer straight from the bottle.

A - I can't really comment on this considering that I drank it straight from the bottle

S - Refreshingly dank...in a good way. If I was having this beer on 4/20 with eyes closed I might grab for the wrong intoxicant is what I'm saying. Very pleasant smell.

T - MMM. Well balanced. I don't have the ability to discern pine, citrus, grapefruit etc., but if I did they'd probably all be there.

M - Again, well balanced carbonation. Just enough to let you know it's there and not so much that it gets in the way of a smooth drinking experience.

Overall I wasn't sure what to expect, but I have a feeling it's one of the best representations of an IPA that I'll ever drink.

It makes me feel like a pussy because Stone prides themselves on having aggressive tasting beers, but this one is not for me. It has no balance whatsoever. It seems like Stone purposefully made it unbalanced so that it would be as hoppy and bitter as possible.

Maybe I got a bad batch, or maybe everyone else is playing follow the leader with this one.

poured from a 1 pint 6 oz bottle into into pint glass.
A- dark amber, hazy, some carbonation bubbles rising entire time. nice, off-white two finger head that slowly dissipated leaving partial lacing throughout.
S- earthy, pine smell dominates, but there are hints of grapefruit as well.
T- hops comes through in a wonderful bitterness that IPA's should have; it finishes with a lemon/honey note that I find interestingly complex.
M-The hops sits on the back of your tongue. It is not too heavy, but it is there as it should be.
O- Above average in my opinion- it has the bite and bitterness I want in an IPA, but it is not overbearing or hard to drink. This is a beer to be savored and enjoyed slowly.

Re-review ^_^ 12 oz bottle poured into a regular glass.

A: Pours a faintly hazy golden amber color. The head is a two finger offwhite shade that retains itself nicely.

S: Not really my bag here. It's mostly some earthy dankness, pine cone, mild grapefruit, with a bit of augmenting caramel malt. I prefer big tropical fruit bomb aromas, so it's not the fault of the brew itself.

T: Better than I remembered. The initial flavor is pleasant grapefruit, before giving way to a bitter, dry piny finish. Malts are only vaguely evident throughout. Quite good, even great.

M: Dry and astringent - bitter, too. There's nothing balanced or delicate about the mouthfeel, but it gives the beer impressive drinkability in conjunction with the lighter texture and moderate carbonation. Still, it would be even better if the bitter dryness didn't fatigue the palate so badly.

O: I keep writing off Stone, and there are many occasions when I'm right in doing so. This one, though, I'm thankful I revisited. I wouldn't quite make it a go-to - there's far too big of a risk of getting a stale bottle here on the right coast - but I would revisit this on tap, easily. A good "palate wrecker" IPA.

Pours hazy amber with average, creamy white head; decent retention and spare lacing. Aroma is citrus ans floral hops, orange peel, bread and cookie malt, light dank, and light pine. Flavor is fresh pine, citrus and grassy hops forward (medium bitterness) with good supporting bready malts and light citrus esters; dry finish with some lingering bitterness. Medium body and low carbonation. Good beer!

A: Deep orange with really active carbonation. Mine had 1/4 inch of head which dissipated immediately. Really?

S: I was really excited by the smell, really hoppy and piney. Some slight citrus aromas.

T: This is where I was really let down, and really, what else is more important? The smell of strong hops was not matched by the taste. The initial taste is moderate hops, very resiny, then a strong finish of bready malts.

M: Very light on the palate. Very crisp and carbonated.

O: I have to admit, I've been drinking Arrogant Bastard for years, I just finally got around to trying the standard IPA. I feel like this is a big letdown, whereas Arrogant Bastard sets the bar high (for me, I understand the IPA came before arrogant bastard, I had arrogant bastard first, so for me the IPA is the new one) The standard IPA falls a little short of the mark.

Bottle into glass

A - Clear golden/amber color, pours a medium-large fluffy head with nice retention, very impressive and thick lacing

S - Hops with grapefruit and lemon, pine, bready malt

T - prickly hops, citrus, then malt. Finsishes with a bit of a sticky hops/cracker flavor

M - Medium body, medium/high carbonation. Pretty crisp finish

O - I liked this beer, it is not one of my favorite IPA's, but very enjoyable

I wanted to snare this one up for obvious reasons. Stone is an excellent brewery, I have heard so much about this IPA, it is a Beer of Fame, etc. Side poured from the 22oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - A large, fluffy white head sits magnificently on top of a golden orange beer that is wicked in its presentation. A little carbonation can be seen in the glass, decent retention with excellent lacing. Of course, as with all Stone products, the packaging is excellent.

Smell - Definetely a fruity hop cascade zips the olfactory glands in a big way. Grapefruit, citrus, and lemons are big time in the nose. Big pines are also present. What you would expect out of a West Coast IPA.

Taste - Follows the nose closely, but has a malty backbone and is very well-balanced. THe malts are continually present on the palate, although the fruity hops are always the big movers.

Mouthfeel - A nice level of hop bitterness and fruity flavors. Very well done all in all, finishes clean and smooth. Medium carbonation and bodied.

Overall - An excellentbeer. All of BA knows this, I know this, you know this. If you haven't had this beer, go get it. Pretty simple.

Presentation on this IPA is extraordinary as a bright white fluffy cloud sits atop a hazy golden/orange body.

The scent is of mostly citrus hops with underpinnings of grapefruit, lemon, brewed tea and even some orange. Nicely presented in aroma this is the high point.

The taste is mostly piney hops with subtle sweet resins and more floral touches. Very metallic in the finish, some of the tea taste comes out near the end, but that tinny taste lasts for some time.

Very crisp and refreshing this IPA has some highs and some lows to make it an interesting ride.

A- pours a translucent pilsner color with a 2" white head. Some blotches and trails remain on the glass.

S- caramel, lemon and orange, and pine.

T- caramel malts, lemon and some citrus, with lemon peel and bitter pine.

M- medium body and carbonation. Some syrup feel with effervescent finish.

O- good ipa, well balanced with light caramel and pine.

A - Pours a great golden color, single finger head, retains very nice, lacing clings very well. Looks like a fantastic beer, especially an IPA should look.
S - A barrage of pine and floral hops, bread malt, with some citrus flavors amongst the pine .
T - A tad try, and resinous flavor from the hops, definitely get the bread malt style flavor, but its not overly sweet. Pine flavor is big time here.
M - Good feeling IPA that leaves your palate with the bitterness for a while.
O - This is just a great, solid IPA that's available year round. Stone is a go-to when it comes to reliable beer.

First had on-tap in a pint glass. Pours a nice golden color with thin white head. Perfect lacing. Right away you can smell an almost overwhelming amount of pine, which is at the forefront of both the smell and taste. At first, the bitterness can be a bit much, but the flavor just takes over so wonderfully. Very piney flavor with just a hint of wheat at the last second. This is honestly one of the smoothest tasting, if not THE smoothest tasting, IPAs I've ever had. Even if you're not a fan of IPAs this is a must have.

Straw yellow color, 2 fingers of head, great retention and lacing. Clear

Smell is over the top hoppy, extremely resinous with a ton of pine, some citrus, a little dank

Taste follows the nose, big pine and citrus. Big punch of bitterness. Clean malt profile with just a touch of sweetness. Dry and crisp finish.

As aggressive as an ipa gets, way better on tap.

Smells like a home brew. Tastes great, lots of hops, mmm. A little less brightness than a usual American IPA, but that does not in anyway mean it's short on flavor, quite the contrary; just different selection in hops. Stone is a great brewer, keep it up. Only real complaint is that it was not very well carbonated, very small head.

Pours a clear copper penny color with a foamy half inch cream head that dissipates at a moderately quick pace, leaving sheets of lacing.

Aroma erupts as soon as the bottle is opened, with huge notes of pine, resin, and fresh cut grass dominating. Dank cannabis, citrus fruit, and caramel malt add complexity.

Caramel malt forms the backbone and is far more prevalent than anticipated from the aroma. Flavor is sweeter than expected, throughout. The finish is pretty bitter and herbal tea-like and resiny, with pine in the aftertaste. Dank cannabis and fresh cut grass hit mid palate and hold on for the duration. There's an initial citrus character, showcasing muted grapefruit and lemon. More complex tropical fruits emerge as it warms.

Body is moderate, with a corresponding amount of carbonation, and slight alcohol warmth.

Much more floral and grassy hop character in the flavor than I recall. Citrus is fairly subdued, but bitterness is not. Not an offensive bitterness, but too much for my liking. Good malt presence, though perhaps a little overboard.

Poured a thin head on a hazy, straw colored body.
The aroma is a wonderful grain and honey with some citrus.
The taste is a solid pine bitterness. Straight up IPA.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.
Well, it's one of the best IPAs out there.

Absolutely one of my favorite beers!! honestly can go good with anything, but you are better off enjoying this beer by itself. it has so much too offer, such great combination between the yeast and malt's making this an outstanding brew. you can put this on my list of top beers.

A- beautiful crystal clear orange body, 3 fingers of full white foam that recede slowly, and very faint, if any, carbonation activity.

S- Citrusy, grassy hops and some faint fruity esters. it's medium potency.

T- Wow. Absolutely delicious hop character, but balanced. It doesn't hang out, you don't get "hop bombed", it's just great. This is such a perfect beer to show someone what all the hop character of an IPA is, without scaring them off in the process.

M- It's kinda soft, kinda thin, dry, washes away but hangs in the back of your mouth. Just perfectly palate cleansing.

O- What a beer. I've had my fair share of IPAs, but never one like this. I've never had an IPA that had all the characteristics I look for, yet washes clean and begs for more without sacrificing body. This is a home run. Cheers. I'll buy a 6 pack of this any time i'm going to be with company that will appreciate it, or a 22oz when I'm not.

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic. "Enjoy by" date of 03.03.13.

The pour on this yields a thick, fluffy head of bright white foam that clings all over the glass and leaves sheets of lacing. The body itself is a crystal-clear gold/honey color with nice carbonation from the bottom of the glass. A great looking beer.

Make no mistake: This is the definition of a West Coast IPA. Brimming with the smell of candied grapefruit, oranges, lemons, floral hops, and some piney astringency in the back, the hops are front and center on this beer. Even as a hop-forward brew, there is still a lot of sweetness; I'm getting a lot of ripe tropical fruit in the nose. This is all backed by just enough bready/biscuity malt profile to balance the abundant bitterness. Great nose on this one.

The taste profile follows the nose. On the front of the tongue, there's a big burst of citrusy bitterness, followed by some malty sweetness and tropical fruit (see above) on the middle of the tongue. Some floral and piney astringency hangs on the back on the mouth in the finish. Perfectly balanced, but hop-centered. All of the 3 Cs of the hop world are in full force here and are beautifully intertwined with each other.

Stone's IPA feels great on the palate. For a relatively high ABV for its style, the alcohol is well-hidden and stays in check through the flavors. Mildy carbonated and smooth, this is a dry and refreshing beer of which you can easily drink several. Its light body makes it easy to drink as well.

Through and through, this is a great and quintessential American IPA. You owe it to yourself to try this.

Poured into a new belgium glass, color is gold/copper, translucent but not too dense; head is frothy, thick on the pour then clings and lingers well.

Smell is not all hops, i get some very nice subtle pale and toasted malt notes, grassy and citrus hops come through with an undertone of pine.

Taste is great, wonderful hop forward flavor, big citrus lighter pine and great clean pale malt flavor - never over sweet or way too bitterly hopped.

Mouthfeel is that wonderful mix of bitter forward with some mild malt balance, your tongue is not destroyed by the bitterness and the dryness from the clean fermentation is a great finish.

Overall, great brew, love the hop flavors and the malt balance. Not an over the top IPA, but a great, easy drinking great tasting one.

12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pale yellow color with great clarity and bubbles coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Caramel and bready malts, citrus, grapefruit, and tangerine. Smells so citrus sweet and delicious.

Taste: Everything is blended well together, but the flavors are a bit lighter than what I smelled. Some lingering bitterness in the end too.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium bodied, low to medium carbonation, and some tingly bitterness in the back of the mouth.

Overall: Pretty solid IPA that I have enjoyed through the years. Good stuff.

OK, where are the hops? I get the bitters. What about the amomas?

OK, it is a well made IPA from the demi-gods of San Diego. But it is dry and I am not getting the hop hits when I buy this, pretty frequently above 60 degrees north latitude. I don't blame them because I have never had a fresh keg glass of this golden brew.

Mitch Steele, I love you guys. Great book on IPAs.

12 oz bottled on 1/28/13, very fresh (which is usually hard to find). $30/case, a great deal.

A: Golden body with a little haze to it. Very nice retention and lacing.

S: Big notes of citrus: grapefruit, lemon and orange.

T: More bitter than most IPAs under 7%. Sour lemon and grapefruit. Malt shows up late to the party and gets thrown out by hops. Not a bad thing though, the hop flavors are great in this.

M: Not too sticky, a little creamy, good carbonation.

O: One of my favorites. Lately, I've been drinking this beer more than any other. Classic west coast style IPA.
