On tap @ Pizza Plant in Buffalo, NY
The beer pours a dark black-brown with a thin halo of tan head. The nose is slightly hoppy, espresso forward, malty, and slightly woody. The taste is unarguably a coffee black IPA (which I initially doubted given the improbability of this offering over the expected Russian imperial stout with espresso), with the malt sweetness carrying a bitter coffee bean and hop finish. The mouthfeel is relatively medium bodied with a drinkable coffee, black IPA base that incorporates flavors that work well without clashing. I'll try dayman soon for comparison, but in the meantime I'd recommend trying this interesting variation.

Reviewed from notes taken at Aces & Ales - Winter Beer Fest in Las Vegas. (1-20-13)
A - Pours black with 1 finger of light brown head. Spotty lacing left behind when it fades.
S - I'm struggling to get anything here, which is disappointing. Maybe a slight grapefruit hop aroma, but nothing else. Left searching for the espresso in the nose.
T/M - The taste confuses me honestly. I found the espresso that I was missing, but now it's over powering the hops. Some dark, bittersweet chocolate and burnt malts as well. But overall, very espresso dominant. Medium smooth mouthfeel.
O - Tastes more like a coffee porter than a black IPA with espresso beans. It's a good brew, don't get me wrong. The flavor profile just confuses me, and seems to clash more than blend harmoniously.

Enjoyed a Growler from a trade. Poured into a Tree House tulip.
A - Poured a deep dark brown almost black hue with a big two finger mocha head that faded to leave big thick sticky lacing and sudsy blanket. Excellent.
S - HUGE aromas of espresso beans citrus/pine hops. Kinda it but wonderfully done.
T - Taste is chewing on an espresso bean! Bitter coffee grounds all over my tongue. Soooo much coffee grounds followed immediately by grapefruit and pine resin. Holy fuck this is delicious.
M - Mouthfeel is very nice for a black ipa, good carbonation here nice and bright.
O - Overall I really enjoyed this beer! Amazing job here the espresso adds so much. Exceptionally better than the base beer. Outstanding.

Growler poured into a pint glass. Thanks Chris!
(A)- Pours practically pitch black. Some tan froth and lace. Solid retention actually.
(S)- A really nice rich roasted coffee ground aroma. Decadent cocoa too on the back-end; lovely.
(T)- Again, superb roasted coffee and cocoa combination up front followed by some subtle citric hops. Such an awesome coffee profile in this.
(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. Rich, but mellow and smooth. Just such a coffee forward beer; love it.
(O)- I really like this; far superior to the regular version. Great coffee nuances and cocoa too. Very tasty. This should be bottled.

On tap at Far Bar in Los Angeles, CA.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy latticework of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, citrus zest, and roasted coffee and espresso beans. Taste is much the same with a medium citrus zest and roasty espresso bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is really tasty and super easy to drink.
