Enjoy by 05.17.13 On-tap at the Cask Republic, New Haven, CT:
Served in a tulip glass and enjoyed on 5/15/13. The appeared a nice deep amber color with a thick, rocky white head that was really well retained. The beer gave off an intense pine hop aroma with maybe a slight hint of citrus. The taste was very good...the hops, while very very upfront were not so overpowering that I was turned off by them, as happens occasionally with some DIPAs. This might be one of the best DIPAs that I have enjoyed. The beer felt good and the beer was smooth, but drinkability does suffer given the ABV. Overall, an excellent brew.

Pour is clear golden orange with a fairly tight white head. Nose is hop forward with a light grain malt balance. Herbal and citrus hops with a touch of sticky resin behind. Taste is a huge hop punch and quite syrupy and resinous. Sticky feel, assertive carbonation balances, tons of citrus and grapefruit. Some bitterness in the finish that lingers a bit. Overall not bad, very syrupy and hop forward.

Not much head but a powerful smell. Like a weird cheese. Tastes like pungent cheese. You really can't drink other beer after this. Tried to have the Avery IPA as a second shift drink after this one and that excellent beer tasted like water. I must say I love this beer. Very powerful. Believe the hype?

On tap, at the Stone brewery. Was a little disappointed, hit them up on a Wednesday, they had none. Hit 'em up again on Friday, bam, there it was. Batch 7.
First thing I notice is the amazing clarity going on here. Seriously, it looks like a mass produced lager, which is a pretty amazing feat once you realize how much hopping it took to make this beer. Even has around 3/4" of head, white, on it, which again, is pretty amazing given all the hops/hop oil up in this.
Smell wasn't massively hoppy, it was good, but it didn't permeate my nose with tons of hops. Not a letdown, but didn't live up to the rest of the characteristics about the beer that blew me away.
Taste, hops are plenty noticeable, there's hardly a malt bill to it, but somehow, there is no alcohol heat, the bitterness is kept down, even though it seems to have plenty of Simcoe hops to it. I think there might be some Galaxy and Nelson/Mosaic around here too. Summit? Only if in small quantities, its far from a prime time player in this hop meld. Green apple hops, tropical mango. Its actually one of the most gentle double ipas I've ever had, and I mean that in a good way. Some pine and mint undercurrents to the hop flavors. Mouthfeel continues to impress, how does this taste so light and abv around only 5-6ish? Plenty dry as well. Must have used some sugar to dry this out and keep a light body, which it works quite well. Slightly grassy as it warms. Stayed away from heavy caramel. This one is biscuit light in terms of malt flavor and additions.
This is one of the best double ipas bottled. I had mine on draft, but it caused me to go buy a bottle from the gift shop.
Must try if you call yourself a hophead.

A: Got it on tap at the City Beer Hall in Albany, where they were serving it in 8 oz glasses. . . . Body is clear golden with a white head that leaves behind really good sticky lace.
S: Dank hops - green, fresh hop smell. Piney and citrusy, but mostly piney. Strong nose.
T: Resiny, fresh hops are the first impression. There is a modest foundation of biscuity caramel malt, but it's overwhelmed by piney, grapefruity hops. Some earthiness and spiciness as well. Finishes with lingering resiny pine bitterness.
M: Medium in heft, carbonation is medium as well.
O: Excellent stuff - this is a true hop-lover's dream. Dank and tasty.

On draft at the stone company store in Pasadena Ca
Gold, bright orange in appearance.
The nose is strong over the top pine and citrus.
I am reviewing the 4-1-13 batch and I have to say its the best so far, much more balanced out then previous ones, this time around it was scary how smooth it was. Mango, peach, citrus, 30 minutes later I was still tasting it in the back of my mouth.
Medium body but extremely smooth
Overall it seems that every batch just gets better and better I have not gotten my hands on the latest 4-20-13 batch but I have one bottle of the 4-1-13 batch that I'm saving for the day before the enjoy by date to really wait to the last minute to see how much it changes. If u haven't had it yet what are u waiting for? Amazing!

Served on tap at Fresh Craft in Denver. 16 oz pint glass.
Enjoy By 4.20.13 is a pale golden amber with great clarity and thick white head.
Aroma is super fresh and hoppy as one would expect. Lots of great citrus.
Flavor is very intense. Resiny, dank, hoppy goodness. Very bitter but not totally out of balance.
Mouthfeel is medium-light in body and nicely carbonated.
Overall an excellent double ipa. Worth seeking out.

On tap at Downhouse in Houston. The latest version, I think that is 4-1-13.
A: Pours a nearly clear golden/orange color. A two finger white head forms with good retention. Lots of lace is left behind.
S: Citrus, resiny pine, grapefruit. Spicy, peppery aromas in the nose. I am surprised by the simplicity here, though enjoyable. A bitterness lingers on.
T: Follows the nose with a clean citrus and slightly resiny flavor. A lingering bitterness. Again, I am a bit surprised by Stones restraint. Something they are not known for.
M/D: A medium to full body, Crisp carbonation. Very clean and dry as well. For the alcohol and hoppyness this is very easy to drink. I can have a few easily.
I am as surprised as anyone when I say this is rather muted. Certainly a good citrus, piny hop kick. Though not near what I was expecting from Stone. Which to me is a good thing. That, or Stone is responsible for dulling even the stingiest of non hop heads tastes. Joking aside, this is a good beer.

on tap at Plan B in Springfield, MA - 3.5.13
A - This brew arrives a plae gold hue with a thin lacey bubbly ring that sticks to the glass.
S - Hoppy hoppy hoppy! Very big on the floral hops, spilling into the pine part of the hop spectrum, but mainly floral. Some candied sugar background gives it a balanced aroma.
T - More hops than in the aroma, didn't think that was possible. Floral and piney and piney and floral. This beer is hoppily delicious. The candied sugar didn't back down, its their forcing in some awesome balance. Its kind of an unflavored rock candy taste.
M&D&O - Yes! More please! A fantastic DIPA. Hop bombs like this rarely have this kind of balance. Try this if you can.

Served in a flute, batch "by 4/01/13".
Appearance: golden amber with a very light hazy body. Head is subtle considering its off the tap maybe 1/3" off the body. This brew did settle nice and even with steady lacing.
Smell: aroma overload with grapefruit and hops that make your nostrils wish you could take this home.
Taste: extreme hops complimented with a bitterness overload that comes off very citrusy. I am absolutely indulging in the taste alone.
Mouth: medium carbonation, might come slightly light wish it was a little heavier but it's everlasting stickiness is incredible.
Overall: here at the bar enjoying one of the best "new" imperial IPAs I have had in a long time. Little expensive but honestly I have had so many DIPAs that this seems priceless. Salud!

On tap at When Pigs Fly. Have I mentioned what a great tap list they have?
This beer was a clear gold color with a thick white head. There was a good deal of lace.
Mostly a citrus aroma, but there were some floral elements also. A sweet malt background.
Primarily citrus taste, grapefruit and lemon. Some piney/floral hops. Biscuit.
This was a pretty hop forward beer, but I thought there was still some good balance.
Can't wait for more.

This beer is just fantastic. Props to stone for upping their game, yet again. On tap at rustico, best by 5-17. You MUST have this beer on tap, it excels over the bottle noticeably in that format.
Pours a pretty gold and slightly orange color, clear with a ring of head, very pretty.
The smell is just awesome, pungent dank hops soaked in a mix of pepper, honey and earth, very clear that this beer is all about highlighting the hops no question, very little malt. Outstanding. The taste follows suit and features a very plant based hop base which is just delicious. Maybe a touch of sweet to give a malt backbone but the stars are hop flavors: citrus, weed, pepper, earth, pungent hop nugget.
The feel is nice, great carbonation and a medium feel, a lasting aftertaste of bitter sweet dripping hops.
Overall, wow. An excellent beer, on par or better than their IPA specialty neighbors Alpine which is high praise. Well done Stone.

04.01.13 batch on tap at Closed for Business poured into a pint glass at slightly warmer than fridge temperature.
L – Pale amber color with a 1-finger frothy, cream-colored head. Pretty good retention and some nice patchy lacing. Clear with a good amount of bubbles.
S – Tons of west coast hops with grapefruit, peach, mango, and pine notes. There may be a touch of bready and caramel malt, but the hops take front and center for sure.
T – Just like the nose suggests, this is a wonderfully hoppy beer. The taste starts off sweet for a split second with bready and caramel malt flavors before a sweeping wave of bitterness comes through. The hop profile includes grapefruit, orange, mango, and peach flavors at first, and a great resinous, piney taste appears at the very finish.
F – Medium-bodied with pretty good carbonation, a chewy and sticky mouthfeel, and a very bitter finish. Grapefruit and pine hop bitterness lingers wonderfully.
O – This is an awesome DIPA from Stone. It is not only delicious, but is also dangerously drinkable given the ABV. I’m so glad I finally got to try a beer from this series. It was worth the wait.

On tap at 2 Bros in Salem Ct. Enjoy by 4-01-13. Pours a murky burnt orange color with a half inch of head. Tons of lacing. Aroma is hoppy with some sweet citrus and tropical fruits. The taste is more of the same sweet citrus and tropical fruits but some pine as well. Good amount of bitterness. Some malt flavor but this one if hop forward for sure. Creamy, heavy mouthfeel. A bit reminiscent of Ruintation. Overall, this is a damn fine Imperial with that typical Stone taste. Glad I got a chance to try it.

A-Golden with a nice white head
S-best smelling IPA I've ever had. Pure grapefruit goodness. Somewhat floral. Pure awesome.
T-comes in with an amazing flavor of crisp grapefruit hops and grains and smooth bitterness. It's a beautiful IPA. Very smooth and refined. After-taste of tropical fruity hops. Great one.
M-medium creamy carbonation with a semi-dry finish
O-extremely impressed and pleased. I tell you I was craving quality hops like no other and this satisfied that craving as well as possible. Such a big smile drinking this. The high abv is lost. Tasting light and smooth.

Wow. Hop heaven. Lots of citrus. Lots of sweet and salty pine. Superb balance between all. Lasting flavor. The only indicator that this is a iipa is the mild burn I get on the back of my palate. Served from tap into a shaker. Poured a golden yellow with a one finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, citrus, grass, grass hop, citrus hop, and spicy hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, citrus, citrus hop, grass hop, grass, onion hop, and spicy hop. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. This one had a pretty big explosion of hops going on here while still managing to be refreshing. There was quite a nice balance here as well. The aroma is quite inviting and the flavor has just enough hoppy resin in it to remind you of the style it falls under. A really well done brew that I would definitely have again.

Taken from notes from their first batch, on tap at the Ritual Tavern in San Diego, 08.25.12.
Actually pasting my notes as I drink Enjoy By 04.01.13, which matches this review
From tap to tulip
A: copper-tan in color, clear. Small head leaves patching lacing everywhere
S. lemony, earthy in the front. Lots of vege scents, onion especially. Ample alcohol lifts the dense bouquet.
T: Typical IPA flavors at first - rind-y citrus, but the vegetable notes pop to the front. Onion, celery, bouillon. Sharp lemon-pepper blends well with ample alcohol. Everything resonates well. Completely unique IPA profile but still a distinctively West Coast style. Suprisingly short finish.
Possibly the best beer Stone had come up with. Someone told me this was a Pliny clone, as Stone distributed for Russian river in ca, but its got its own groove. Same West Coast style, but definitely unique.

Clear gold with a slender, bubbly white head. Smells hoppy! Pine, pineapple, grapefruit, and a tangerine sweetness. A subtle hint of rubber. The flavor is oily, pulpy citrus, ripe fruit, and dry, resinous pine with a pale malt sweetness buried underneath. Definitely bitter, but smooth and not hampered by booziness, which allowed me to suck down my ten ounces pretty quickly. I love the idea and hope they send some more in the direction of NC sometime soon. Very good!

$6.00 for 10oz snifter
Kegged on 1.11.13, sampled 5 days later.
[A] One finger of bright white foamy head, moderate retention. The body is brightly clear and polished brassy orange in color. A minimal amount of lace slathers the glass. Very attractive.
[S] Starts off with juicy tropical fruits of orange, tangerine, and light papaya or mango. Then, summit-like qualities provide a faint but distinct aroma similar to onion grass and chives. Not digging it so much now personally, but my threshold for these aromas in IPAs is low. Begins at a '4.5' and drops a full point.
[T] Again, there is an initial burst of tropical hop character. A light melon flavor comes through on the back end. After the first few sips, the tropical blend all but disappears when the beer fully opens up. The beer is still pretty good, just not as impressive as it was just minutes ago.
[M] Medium full body, smooth, semi thick body, the carbonation kicks in at the perfect moment. The strength is well concealed for a gravity of this height. [Sidenote: 2.15.13 was listed at 9.2% instead of the 9.4% listed on BA.]
[O] Started out with a bang, but transformed and dropped off quickly. I had pours from two separate keg and my experience was the same each time.

Batch 4. 2/15/12 Enjoy By. Had this on tap initially in 12oz glass than had it in bottle poured in a snifter. Taste really good on tap, really smooth, a bit hoppy but had a good balance. For 9.4% it was really tasty. In bottle, same result, its pretty damn good and worth the hype in my opinion. Really fresh beer and so far my favorite stone beer.
Try this blitch.

This is the Enjoy by 2/15/13. Served in 12oz tulip. Poured a very clean, clear medium gold color with about 3/4 inch of off-white head that had OK retention and good lacing.
The aroma featured a lot of piney hops, and had some citrus notes as well. There was no real malt in the aroma. The flavors were basically the same, many bright hops all across the tongue, no balancing malt flavors, and a bitter citrus finish.
The body was good, even and clean, but was a bit thin for my preferences. Drinkability was good, if you're in the mood for a nice IPA, you won't go wrong with a couple of these. Overall, a nice example of the style, but one that's not particularly special or notable. I suspect the high ratings here are partially the result of hype over the marketing gimmick. Worth trying if you see a batch.

On tap at Smokin Joe's the other day.
Enjoy By pours a golden amber color with excellent head retention and considerable sticky lacing all around. Have to say, this is a nice looking IPA from Stone. The nose is every bit as attractive, as I pick up considerabley dry citrus, white pepper and pine. There's a slight skunky aroma as well, along with some light soap. This beer has all the tell tale signs of a serious hop bomb. On the palate, this is just the way I like my IPA's. There's barely enough malt to handle the intense hoppy bitterness in this beer, and so the mouthfeel actually seems bit lean and thin. However, for this style of beer I think that's fine, though a touch more malt wouldn't have been such a bad thing. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely in this excellent beer, and the finish is long and bitter. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile, and frankly I was surprised to find this is such a big beer (really do not get much sense of the 9.4% abv., though certainly you can tell it's up there a bit).
An altogether excellent, impressive beer from the talented folks at Stone. Definitely a beer made with hopheads in mind.
