Fourth batch. On-tap at Fat Head's Pittsburgh.
Great clarity. Amber/orange in this light. Soppy little foam cap. Quaint look.
Tropical fruits, citrus, and pine. Papaya, grapefruit, orange, and grated lemon. Biscuit malts are in attendance, as well.
Dank citrus and tropical fruit hops pour out grapefruit, lemon, and papaya. Resinous oils remind of sappy pine. Malts have a mellow pale sweetness. Bitterness is surprisingly mild. Just an excellent DIPA.
Drinks smooth, with a light bitter burn in the throat. Carbonation creams the beer a bit. Plus feel.
Kickass stuff. Feed me another.

What can I say? Perfect Pilsner-like color* For those who would argue that it should be more appropriately copper colored... *The first officially designated American craft brewed IPA was Grant’s, and it contained Pilsener malts of this golden hue. The nose is an exquisite melange of grapefruit, Mandarin orange, tangerine, pinapple, mango, kiwi, and lemon/lime. The flavors follow suit, and the body is medium to full with just the right amount of malt backbone which is more of a textural thing, in this case, than a flavor enhancer. The hops are given free reign to truly shine here. The balance is nearly flawless, right through the long, dry finish which is crisp, and remarkably refreshing. Wow!

Newest batch: 07-04-13. Pours a clear golden color with a large white head that goes down quickly. Scent is immediately floral, but quickly fades to DANK hops. I can't help but be reminded of the hoppy beers from Alpine when I smell this special offering from Stone. The hop scent on this is just so damn inviting, it's ridiculous. Sweet, but not malty...it's a sweet, hoppy resin aroma. Some pine and a ton of citrus fruit with a hint of pineapple and mango. Taste is just as it smells. It is so hard to explain this beer, because it is so delicious and everything an imperial IPA should be. So fresh and so clean...as Outkast would say. Mouthfeel is crisp and medium bodied. Drinkability is VERY high! This is a top notch IPA that reminds me of the quality that Alpine produces. Definitely my favorite hoppy Stone beer.

Tell ya what, I have not been this excited to review a beer in quite a while...
A: Pours a beautiful brass color with immaculate clarity. Two fingers just slight off khaki. Fairly quick head recession (9.4 abv) and only moderate lacing (again, 9.4 abv). Carbonation is moderate, with tiny little bubbles rising to the surface.
S: Bursting with fruity hops. Stone fruit, lot of tropical flavors (mango, pear, pineapple). Underlying malt profile that is subtle, but noticeable. Sweet breadiness that is enhanced by the large abv. Yeast throws in very faint doughy aspect that melds beautifully with the caramel malts.
T: Bits of stone fruit and tropical fruit in the foreground. Prickly, almost pepper like mid palate that is probably from the higher abv. Fairly crushing bitterness that runs from the mid palate through the finish that turns oily and resinous towards the end and finishes with a brutal ashen/chalky bitterness. Aftertaste of astringent mint.
M: Medium bodied. A tad slick from the booze, but the dry finish keeps things balanced.
O: Take the best aspects of Stone IPA and Ruination 10 year Anniversary. Combine them and you get this beer.
