This is a review of the 12/21/12 batch, consumed righteously on the 12/12/12. This is written from my notes. Poured into a pint glass from a 22oz bomber.
The color starts as a slightly clear orange, but quickly melds into a golden amber tone with a decent amount of carbonation and head altogether. A ring remains at the top during the entire time. Lovable amounts of lacing stick to the glass, and the hop resin makes the beer appear shiny and colorful overall.
The smell is an unbelievably fresh aroma of hop bliss, with extremely floral notes, yet a zest resembling an earthy, well maintained orange grove. The hops aromas appear to stick to the nostrils and never let go, with the high alcohol taking a back seat here, but which nevertheless causes an intense sensation of both sweetness and spiciness. There's something extremely earthy about this smell that I can't quite put my finger on. Could it be the toffee like malts melding with the hop oil, or simply the fresh hops themselves? Either way, it's excellent.
There's a similar, fantastic experience that goes with the flavor as well. Definitely this beer has achieved the freshness that it claims to aim for. This is a plethora of hop freshness in ways that must be tasted to be believed. There's a strong hop zest, but fresh in the sense where it not only is explosive in flavor, but seems to almost melt on the tongue after every gulp. The hop oils are very lively here, and the malts are balanced in very well with them. Other than that, the alcohol finish may be a bit too much here, and it gets slightly thinned as it warms up too much, but the flavor is definitely beyond perfection here.
Remarkable stuff from Stone - I haven't had too many other hoppy beers this fresh before. The price tag is a bit high, but it's definitely an unforgettable experience of sorts for hop and citrus fanatics in beer. Highly recommended!
