Notes:
We've been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, it's all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). We're talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a Double IPA (can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a New Belgium chalice. Bottle dated: August 2012

A: Pours a beautiful golden/orange in color, crystal clear body, great carbonation streaming off the bottom of the glass. About 2 fingers worth of an off-white fluffy head, receeding at a slow pace and leaving behind a good amount of lacing.

S: Nose is not a typical west coast IPA, but more like berries, green apple, lemon oil, bready malts, a bit complex. I'm getting a small note of spruce as well, but nevertheless, an amazing complex nose.

T: Taste is of bright citrus notes, some tropical fruits and berries, pineapple, and rounds off with a lemony spice mixed with spruce? Rye definitely adds some spice at the end and melds well with the bittering hops.

M: Light/medium mouthfeel; front of the tongue is blasted with bitterness, but just like that, the lemon oils and citrus notes balance the astringency, creating a sense of wanting more! End of the tongue is lightly coated with a bready, almost grilled rye, then washed away with an unnoticeable 10% ABV. I'm considering that the spruce note was in fact the lemon oil/verbana or the calypso hops which I'm not familiar with. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the astringency level...it was a bit low for Stone's standard, but all in all a solid DIIPA.

Came across this is my cellar today - didn't mean to let a DIPA age but oh well, not much I can do now other than drink it!

Served in a Weyerbacher tulip. Poured with a thick two fingers of head. Hazy and not particularly transparent, and amber in color. More reddish than I expected. Sweet vanilla notes in the nose, and some grassy clover fragrance. Taste began with a toffee sweetness followed by notes of tea leaves bitter citrusy hoppiness. Great mouthfeel, very smooth and bubbly.

Overall, a unique beer that was fairly enjoyable. I wish I had tasted it fresh as I'd be curious to see how much the hops have faded, but it still held up fairly well.
