Notes:
And as Stone Ruination IPA turns 10, we thought we’d make ourselves a nice little birthday present to celebrate. But what kind of selfish jerks would we be if we didn’t share?! Behold, the Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA. (Clever name, eh? That’s why us folks in the Marketing Dept. get the big bucks!) It’s an amped-up version of Stone Ruination IPA, with a bit more malt to bring the abv up from 7.7% to 10.8%, and a very heavy dose of hops. “Classic” Ruination uses 2.5 pounds of hops per barrel–which is more than double the amount we use in any other of our core beers–but for Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, we went double again, using an impressive 5 pounds of hops per barrel, including about a pound each of Citra and Centennial in the dry hop. (Hell. Yes.)

A: Pours clear and golden with a thin white head which fades to the rim and leaves a bit of lace.

N: Shines with citrus such as grapefruit, orange, and tangerine. Some pine and tropical fruit notes also.

T: Follows nose with plenty of sweet malt to balance things out. Resiny and fresh green hops really stand out but the sweet malt wins on the finish.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Dry and bitter. Notable ABV here is hidden but certainly present. Perhaps a tad too sweet for me.

O: Big, complex, balanced, and powerful. A nice tribute to a classic.

Bought it at the local Total Wine today. Could not resist tasting it tonight with dinner.

Poured it in an Arrogant Bastard pint glass. A slightly off white head appeared and I was left with a gorgeous amber gold colored beer. Reminds me of Knuckle Sandwich as far as color. Absolutely, beautifully clear.

Smell was beautiful. Slightly sweet but loaded with grapefruit, pine and citrus. Grapefruit is the predominant scent here for sure. Juicy, juicy!

Taste was a little odd at first. It wasn't as citrus bomb as I expected. SMOOOTH comes to mind as far as taste. Hoppy but not overly so when cold, as it warms the hops come out a bunch more. Velvety smooth was my description of the taste. The finish came through with that lovely hop oily bitterness. That hung around a good chunk of time too.

Velvety smooth, oily mouthfeel. Heavier bodied than regular Ruination. Great feel.

Overall, well... I bought one bottle. I'm going back out tomorrow to get two more. It's a great beer. I'm reminded of Pliny the Younger when drinking it. For the $6.49 a bomber, it's a steal. Go get it, drink it and enjoy it before it's gone.

Bottle (2012)

Liquor Stop
San Marcos, CA

Clear, dark orange with a hint of amber and a moderately sized off-white head that lasts for quite some time, eventually leaving messy, irregular webs of lace down the glass. I've never seen a prettier DIPA.

A tremonds bouquet of hops in the aroma: big pine and citrus notes, a good amount of resin and dank marijuana, tree sap, and some caramel sweetness. Bold, expressive, and fresh!

Big bitterness, huge amounts of pine, citrus, and sap hop flavors, lots of floral elements, along with some citrus and malt sweetness. Complete and delicious. This smacks you over the head with hops.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, as well as a touch oily.

A world-class DIPA. Better than Ruination.

The beer poured a golden color with a fingers worth of a white head that left great lacing. The aroma was of citrus and pine. The flavor profile was dominated by citrus and pineapple with numerous tropical fruits in the background. The mouth feel was sticky and finished dry and bitter.

On tap at Sapsuckers in Huntington, NY: pours a slight hazy yellow gold color with a massive 1 finger foamy white head that faded extremely slowly and left very good spotty lacing and rings as it went down; typical for Stone IPA and always a pleasure to look at.

Smells of big juicy citrus hops up front, followed by piney notes, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, floral hops, grains, biscuit, light caramel and brown sugar, and then some more citrus. The malt backbone adds balance and this is a really nice fresh smelling IPA.

Tastes like the nose, but with more malt presence; flavor consists of piney notes/pine cone, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, orange peel, floral hops, roasted grains, biscuit, caramel, wheat bread, grass, light brown sugar, herbs like tea leaf, and then some more bitter citrus notes that trails off on the clean side. Not the hop bomb that I expected, but it's incredibly smooth and well balanced and really easy to drink. No sign of the ABV, and the spices were mild like floral notes or dry hops; for such a big beer this is sessionable.

Mouthfeel is creamy and crisp at the same time, with average carbonation, a medium body that's almost chewy and a nice bitter hoppy finish.

Overall not what I expected from Stone since it was not full of sizzling hops that smacked your taste-buds around, but it was just as delicious as I had hoped for so this was a winner in a slightly different form. Glad I got to try this one time release. This was so smooth that it exceeded my expectations.

Draft at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ.

Pours a hazy, dark golden orange color with tangerine edges and a one finger frothy white head that slowly settles into thick, lasting ring.  Glass is left coated with chunks of soapy lacing.

Über fresh, juicy hop aroma that's dominated by tropical and citrus fruits.  Slightly earthy with a decent amount of grassy, resinous pine but the nose is bursting with sweet mango, pineapple, grapefruit, papaya and orange peel.  Subtle biscuit malt notes underneath.

Medium bodied with a blast of dank, sticky hops that provide a lot of earthy bitterness that lingers into a dry finish.  This is countered by a strong tropical and citrus fruit presence that's really juicy and sweet with tons of grapefruit, pineapple and orange peel flavor.  Really well balanced with a complex hop profile followed by a subtle pale malt backbone.  Hints of biscuit and grainy graham cracker before the finish.  Perfectly balanced and the high abv is excellently masked resulting in a deceptively drinkable and delicious beer.

Served on tap at The Beer Authority in New York, NY

A: Pours a hazy golden copper to light amber in color with some light amounts of visible carbonation near the surface of the beer. The beer has a half finger tall foamy off-white head that slowly reduces to a thin film over the majority of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: The aroma of this beer is extremely hoppy with the smells of citrus, grapefruit, and mango dominating and a lighter presence of grassy and pine/resin hops. Lighter notes of caramel malts with just a touch of sweetness.

T: The beer has a solid body of caramel malts with a light amount of sweetness. But the dominant flavor of this beer is that of the hops - primarily citrus, grapefruit, and mango. There is a lighter presence of pine/resin hop notes as well. The beer has moderate to strong bitterness that really lingers for quite a while.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of alcohol heat in the finish.

O: Very enjoyable but this is a big beer and needs to be sipped slowly. Much too bitter to be easy to drink but I think I like this better than the orignal it was based upon. Really enticing aroma.

On tap at Ginger Man in NYC.

Beer is a darkish blonde colour with a small white head. Retention is poor, but lacing good.

Smell consists of bright, sticky citrus. Grapefruit, pine, some pineapple. A bit of caramel malt below that.

Taste is, unsurprisingly, quite bitter. Lots of citrus, mainly grapefruit. A surprisingly large amount of caramel malt. Some booze, but not as much as one would expect given the abv. Actually surprisingly smooth!

Full bodied, moderate carbonation, oily.

Overall, very good.

Had this on tap at Hair of the Dog in St. Louis. Great pour; big, 3 finger head, even with the bartender knowing how to pour. The best lacing and retention I've seen outside of a stout.

Smell was huge hops floral. Taste was surprisingly balanced with the extreme hop profile equaled by an impressive malt bill. Starts and finishes with a solid bitter hops flavor, but in between, the malt flavor profile provides a sweetness and balance I haven't seen in a DIPA. Drinks suspiciously easy for the 10.8% ABV, and is sticky and thick on the palate.

Overall, a great DIPA. I haven't had regular Ruination, but I need to try it to get a solid baseline.

Poured into a tulip glass from the tap at iTap-Soulard for St. Louis Craft Beer Week.

Pours a bright dark copper with some slight haze. There is a dense light creamy colored head that forms and has some sticky lacing.

Aroma is intense. Sweet and boozy with monstrous hop resin notes that are intense and delicious. Strong grapefruit and tangerine and even some sweet pineapple notes. Malts might be there with some caramel and slight grain notes.

Taste is impressive. Intense hoppy brew. Citrus notes with some grapefruit and strong orange notes, both sweet and citrusy. Sweetness is definitely prominent in the taste. But mixes well with some intense hop notes that destroy the palette. Yummy. The booze is prominent and I can definitely feel it a bit. Great resinous and sticky body with some nice dry finish.

Overall. Stone nailed it with this brew. Delicious and well crafted. Intense and devastating hops that really put your palette out for a rest but that is so delicious that you can’t help but want more.

Draft offering served in a nonic. It was an awesome experience last month to see this get wheeled into the local bar and get put on tap within seconds of arrival. Awesome that the serving temp was ideal straight from the getgo with no need to warm up. The brew appears a clear copper color. A tan creamy cap sits atop supported by streaming carbonation.

The smell is herbal as all hell with pine and citrus. A light tropical quality runs throughout with a hint of sulfur. Underneath toasty grain and a fusel touch of alcohol mix things up and a cheesy grain note towards the back evolves as it warms up.

The taste is toasty grain with a huge hop presence. Flavors of herbs, pith, pine, resins are upfront. There is a very nice tropical friut flavor present before the onset of the alcohol. The hop flavoring is really noteworthy. It displays a wide array of flavor without crushing your palate with bitternes.

This is a heavier than medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. A very nice tribute/anniversary brew that I would pick anytime over the normal ruination. After coming down of a week long ruination kick where i was drinking the normal brew just about every day, this anniversary is a real superior treat.

Served on-tap at Al's of Hampden into a snifter.

A - Pours slightly hazed golden orange with a nice one finger tall white head leaving sticky streaks of lace down parts of the glass.

S - Smells of fresh cut tropical fruits - mostly mango and grapefruit - pungent piney hops, fresh cut grass and an appropriate amount of caramel malt.

T - Starts off with a huge dose of piney hop resin and sweet caramel malt slowly giving way to hints of mango, grapefruit, pineapple, fresh grass and lightly toasted bread. Alcohol is ever present, growing stronger as it sits in the glass, but it never really gets in the way. Finish retains quite a bit of the hop bitterness, leaving the palate dried long after each sip.

M - This one is definitely a big hoppy beer with plenty of delicious flavors and moderate carbonation. Not as sticky sweet as I was expecting it to be, although it is definitely still very sweet, with a fairly dry finish that leaves me wanting more.

O - I was expecting this to be good but it ended up being really good. I also had a bottle of this one that wasn't as good as this was so I am glad I got to try it on-tap as well. Nice work Stone!

Served on-tap in a tulip glass.

Appearance: Dark orange/copper. Off-white head. Semi-translucent. Looks very appetizing.

Aroma: Grapefruit up front. Nice hop presence and some underlying malts. Nothing overpowering.

Taste: Fantastic. Solid bitterness throughout (not surprising at over 100 IBU's) with definite tropical fruit and grapefruit notes. Surprisingly juicy for a double IPA. The bitterness lingers but not long enough to be problematic. The fine balance of flavors gives it an edge over other beers of this style.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and tongue biting. A little drying on the tongue after the halfway point. It can be hard to sip and savor considering the above average drinkability.

Final Thoughts: I wish this wasn't a limited release. Definitely in the top ten beers I've had. Get it while you can, it does not disappoint!

On-tap at Prime 16; enjoyed side-by-side with Double Dry Hopped Ruination.

A: Clear, pale orange-amber body with nearly an inch of ultra-fine, creamy tan head. Great retention and lace. Stunning.

S: Intense. Pine and grapefruit are both front and center, with some deeper citrus fruitiness and some distinct Christmas tree resin underneath. Not too much booze. Terrific.

T: Surprisingly dull here, with some malt sweetness combining with the citrusy hops up front and the pininess relegated to pure bitterness on the big, boozy finish. It's really good, but not as stellar as the aroma.

M: Creamy medium body with moderate carbonation. A bit oily, but nice.

O: The aroma alone is worth the price of admission, but I really wish that hadn't ramped up the ABV quite so much - this beer should be all about the amazing hops, and the booze just became a distraction.

Cheers!

On tap. Pours a clear golden amber with a small white head that settles to ring and leaves a decent amount of lacing on the glass . The aroma is pine, citrus, booze, and caramel with sweetness apparent in the aroma. The initial taste is quite sweet with a bit of pine, caramel, and grapefruit. The finish is boozy with a bit of bitterness. Medium body. Low carbonation. A bit too sweet and boozy, but that’s not surprissing with a beer of this size.

Served from draft into a tulip

A - Deep golden in color with a frothy head that just sits forever. Heavy lacing.

S - Lots of cascade hops for sure. Lots. Grapefruit, resin, pine, citrus

T - All citrus with a heavy hop flavor. Nice full pine and citrus fruit esters. Very nice resinous linger of flavors.

M - Super smooth and creamy up front with a thick center and ridiculously fruity and dry bitter finish.

O - Another delicious hop bomb from Stone. The strength is hidden by the overwhelming hop flavors and never got to a point where it was too overbearing with the 10 oz. pour. One and done with this beer though.

Was excited to be able to taste this limited release anniversary beer celebrating 10 whole years since Stone released the alternately famous/infamous Ruination. Had this in a Boulevard tulip glass at the Salty Pig in Boston's Back Bay.

A (4/5): Stone's Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA pours a translucent orange color with a creamy off white head of one and a half fingers. Looks very nice.

S (4/5): Aromas of grapefruit and pine rise up from the glass. Sounds pretty standard for an IPA, right? Yeah, well these particular smells are QUITE a bit bolder, more pungent, and deeper than what you find in the run-of-the-mill IPA crop. Can't help but be impressed. Ruination 10th Anni. also features an interesting dankness. (Perhaps the beer's intense aromas are augmented by the generous alcohol content?)

T (4.5/5): 10th Anni's flavor follows its smell: it is piney, grapefruity, super-hopped up in the foretaste. There is a little bit of boozy alcohol flavor (to be expected in a beer this big), but it is clean and doesn't get in the way. The finish is long, with lots of hop resin flavors and a residual sweetness that calls to mind Stone Old Guardian Barleywine. Excellent flavor.

M (4/5): The beer has a medium body with medium-low carbonation. A little piney prickliness on the tongue and some resinous feel in the back due to the hop oils. Definitely not an easygoing, mild-mannered ale here, but this is Stone we're talking about.

Overall (4/5): This is a very good high ABV American Double IPA that is worthy of the Stone Brewing name: it is one aggressive hop monster. I hope to find a bomber of this to snatch up and drink greedily.

A - this limited brew arrives a light golden brown color with a half finger of off white head with plenty of carbonation to keep it aloft

S - I'm in for some hops, but the smell was far more balanced than I expected, the hops were of the piney and grapefruit variety, however there was some nondescript sweetness layered in

T - citrus hops dominate, big grapefruit at first, which battles with some strong candied sugar flavors, just as I thought the taste was over a strong citrus punch that is distinctively orange

M&D - the velvety tongue coating IBU's, the big grapefruit, the pine, this is a HOP BOMB! very tasty

A:Tupelo/clover honey golden in color. Thin, white head that dissipates quickly. No lacing.

S: It's like sticking your face into a bag of fresh hops. Like 5lbs of hops per barrel awesomeness! Citrus, pine, candied malts and awesome.

T: Hops, hops, hoppy hops! Obviously this beer is very hop forward. The lemon grapefruit citrus intertwined with pine is well balanced. Usually, there will be too much of one or the other. This beer also has great malt character, and is full bodied. Caramel and candy notes, slightly peppery qualities and a touch of roasted characteristics. Perhaps there's some other fruit in there, but this beer blew out my palate before I could identify everything.

M: Round, full and big. Heavy, long and taxing on the palate. This is what you would expect from a beer like this, though.

O: This is a distinctly intense ale, with the qualities to shock and impress. The additional dry hopping adds depth and punch to this beer. Highly recommended.

On tap in an 8-oz mini tulip at the Stone World Bistro & Gardens

Appearance: What a lovely rich golden brown, darker coloration than you'd expect for an IPA or even an Imperial IPA, hinting at the full bodied hop monster awaiting me. Slightly off white head one finger head, not much retention (quickly retreats to a ring around the glass) but lovely robust lacing. I'm excited.

Smell: My. God. Hop bomb inbound. Big massive citrus - orange and lemon rind, tropical fruit, pine, grapefruit, some spice, and maybe a hint of malt character in the background, a bready and caramelly presence that's barely there, but there.

Taste: The citrus fruits and tropical fruits absolutely take this one over - and I mean that in the best way possible. Lemon and orange zest, mango, grapefruit, papaya dominate. Pine and earthy spiciness round out the hop flavors. The malt is present and enjoyable if you're looking for the flavors (bread, caramel, maybe honey?) but it's the hops that dominate the show, and their flavors come through beautifully and aggressively. A hop-head's dream. Some alcohol but not unpleasantly so

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied, maybe a tad under-carbonated, long and very very bitter finish. Warming alcohol, but that's to be expected with such high gravity

Overall: Color me thoroughly impressed. As an avid Stone fan and huge hop-head, this brew has set the bar for me for the Imperial IPA style. It's unabashedly hop-focused. It's also better than the regular Ruination. Stone, please tell me you have some sort of plan to release this recipe again, even if it's once a year and/or under a different moniker. It's that good. If you have a chance to try it, don't pass it up. I'll be stockpiling as many 22oz bombers as I can before this stuff sells out.

On tap at the Rose & Crown. $6 for 250mL, wahoo great deal

A: Pours a murky burnt orange in a mason jar. Filled to the brim with very little head.

S: Muted aroma of citrus: grapefruit, tangelo, and pineapple. Small pine needle aroma. A noticeable amount of pale malt sweetness.

T: Pale malt sweetness leads up front and dominates the finish, but the rest of the taste is accentuated by citrus hops (grapefruit, orange rind) and pine. This definitely has Ruination's signature on it. The sweetness leaves a small burn on the finish, but not as much as I found in (say) Marin Brass Knuckle.

M: A little burn in the finish reveals both the ABV and the sweetness, but it is restrained considering the big-ness of this beer. I am impressed; I have honestly thought that Stone lost its creative mojo 3-4 years ago... This is a great interpretation of a triple IPA.

O: I reviewed this separately from the bottle version since I felt pretty differently about them. I didn't have the patience to let this one warm up, and the Rose generally serves its beers too cold, so not the best experience in general. I liked it, but I'd recommend the bottle more.

On tap at Al's of Hampden.

The beer pours an orange amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is impressives in this beer, as I get a huge aroma profile of orange citrus and pine (with a capitol P). There's also a slight balsa wood, lavendar component as well, which is impressive. The flavor profile replicates the nose, though there was a bit more complexity. Interestingly, although this beer is quite bitter, leaning to the dry side, ultimately the finish was a bit sweet. Mouthfeel was medium bodied to full, with a long, bitter, alcoholic finish. The only real problem is the heat in the finish, which mars this beer's drinkability a bit. Knowing Stone, I assume they made this beer to be intentionally over the top (and they succeeded), but I just found this beer to be a bit too boozy and hot, even though the flavor profile is pretty excellent otherwise (it's like the regular ruination on steroids).

A good beer, but it's hard to imagine drinking more than a single glass of this.

Sampled this in bottle format later the same evening. There seemed to be a bit more pine in the nose (which surprised me), but otherwise I found the bottle version to be very similar to the draft version (and so not in need of additional review).

Served in a mini mason jar at the Rose & Crown.

A: Good head, good lace, clear gold.

S: huge hops. Grapefruit and pine. Perfect West Coast IPA.

T: Delicious. One of the best IPAs I've tasted, and probably my favorite Stone. Abrasively bitter, interestingly floral, and heavy on the grapefruit. Liquid lupulin. Lingering aftertaste. Hell yeah.

M: A bit thin for the ABV.

O: Marvelous. Highly recommended. Would have again. Top notch double IPA. Go to.

On tap at Bier Baron poured in a 10 oz. goblet.

Pours a crystal clear dark golden color. Wispy white head tops the beer and leaves a sticky lacing on the glass.

Strong hop aroma of blunt citrus. Grapefruit rind and pith, and blood orange are in the foreground with a touch of weed lurking in the background. A slight sweetness from the malt is detectable as well.

The taste is big and powerful with hops! Major pithy citrus rind. Somewhat one dimensional in its powerful grapefruit character. Sticky resiny hops power this beer.

Stone beers always have a refined full mouthfee, even the low ABV beers and this one is no exception. Coating is a good word to describe it. Bitterness on the back end is huge.

Overall an awesome DIPA done in typical Stone flashiness.
